Summer fun on the Far South Coast
From the Editor
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
February Welcome to the Far South Coast whether you're a local, visiting from up the road or from interstate or overseas, we hope you enjoy your time in this beautiful part of the world. I'm writing this in early January, and we've just had a bushfire that thankfully was brought under control without significant damage. A huge thanks to those RFS volunteers who do such an extraordinary job, not just in summer but all year round. We really appreciate your efforts. One of the big events on this month is the 18th Cobargo Folk Festival, held on 22nd - 24th February. With an enormous range of performers and musical styles, the Folk Festival is about a lot more than folk music. Workshops, world music, blues and roots, bush poetry and comedy are just some of the genres you'll come across at the Festival. Details on page 21. Also on in February is the Far South Coast National Show in Bega, this
Contents year celebrating its 140th birthday. Attracting competitors from around Australia, the Show features the best of regional life - livestock, produce and arts and craft. It's well worth a visit. More info on page 2. If you're travelling up to Canberra, keep an eye out for the Summerside Festival; it's an opportunity to enjoy the A.C.T.' region's best food and wine plus lots of events - you'll find more information on page 31. There are lots of art exhibitions on at the many galleries on the coast too - make sure you visit to enjoy works by our talented local artists as well as those from outside the region. Keep reading to find out what else is happening in the region, and have a safe and enjoyable time on the coast.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
2
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

In 1949, Eden’s fishing industry faced economic ruin. The two main fishing species of barracouta and salmon failed to arrive along the coast, leaving local fishermen wondering what to do next. Tuna was the answer. Fishermen at Bermagui claimed there were so many that they ‘could walk from their boats to the shore on the fishes’ backs’. Mostly caught by trolling up to seven lines, around 300, 000 pounds (136 kg) of tuna was caught in the first four weeks. Most of the tuna weighed around 20 pounds (just under 10 kg). Further out to sea, Commonwealth fisheries officers located schools of tuna weighing up to 50 pounds (22.6 kg). On 24 September 1950, the American owned tuna clipper Senibua (with its own spotting aircraft) began to prepare for experimental pole fishing for tuna in Australian waters. On its first cruise in waters near Jervis Bay, Senibua poled 6 tons of southern bluefin in 40 minutes. The visit by the clipper was seen as an opportune time for Australian fishermen to learn tuna poling methods from experienced crews and explore the commercial viability of Australian tuna resources. Tuna poling involved the ‘chumming’ of waters, where either dead or live bait was thrown into the school of tuna to create a feeding frenzy. While tuna were actively feeding, fishermen stood in racks attached to the sides of the fishing

Above: Estelle Star, 1961. Photograph by Don Edwards. Courtesy National Archives of Australia In the early 1960s, experiments began on mechanical poling machines. While they had benefits, vessels still required crews to resolve mechanical and fish release failures and stow the catch. A dangerous occupation, fishermen have been lost when hauled overboard by large tuna and entire crews of vessels have vanished in poor weather. This exhibition examines the evolution of methods and equipment associated with tuna pole fishing, and pays tribute to the fishermen who worked in the physically, financially and emotionally demanding industry of tuna poling. vessel, and cast long lines with barbless feather lures or live bait. The fish strike the lure and once hooked, fishermen haul their long fishing poles overhead where the fish dislodge during the change in tension of the swinging action. The line and lure is then cast out again as quickly as possible to maximise the catch numbers while the feeding frenzy is at its peak. If fish proved too large for a single pole fisherman, the pole configuration changed to double and triple polers which allowed two or three men to haul in a single fish.

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent
swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June. Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf,

Cobargo • Bermagui The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is far more than a working village. It is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. With galleries, cafes like the fantastic Chalk and Cheese, as well as established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the Laneway markets. Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkeling, boating and canoeing. Book a fishing charter on one of the many local boats or throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River.
Don't miss a swim in the beautiful Blue Pool, set on the edge of the ocean at the base of the cliffs off Scenic Drive. Try out the 18 hole golf course, hit a ball around the tennis courts or play bowls at the Bermagui Country Club. Test your riding skills at the Bermagui Mountain Bike Park. Go bush walking, take a guided walk or bird watch in the surrounding National Parks and Forests.

Wagonga Inlet, Narooma © Paul Callaghan
Narooma • Bodalla • Moruya Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a patrolled beach, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. Narooma is the base for charter operators offering tours to nearby Montague Island, with its spectacular lighthouse, little penguin and fur seal colonies and Aboriginal heritage.

Just up the road from Narooma is Bodalla, the village with the magnificent stone church and many other historic buildings. The village was developed by Thomas Mort in the late 1800s as a private country estate based around the dairy and cheese making industries, which still dominate Bodalla today. All Saints Anglican Church was commissioned by the Mort family in memory of Thomas Mort and his wife. Work began on the Church in 1880 and was completed in 1901. Further north, the township of Moruya also has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore. It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place. These days however, Moruya is known
for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.
What to See & Do Take a trip to Montague Island Nature Reserve to watch wildlife Follow Narooma's Mill Bay Boardwalk to see schools of fish and graceful stingrays Visit Bodalla's historic All Saints Church Stroll or ride your bike through Moruya's Riverside Park Indulge in some retail therapy in Moruya's many specialty shops stocking unusual items

Batemans Bay
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.
Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay has a fantastic 27 hole championship golf course, and there are plenty of other courses to play within easy driving distance. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. Head north to Long Beach, the Murramarang National Park and Durras Lake
