Cobargo Folk Festival

From the Editor

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

February Welcome to summer on the Far South Coast - as I write this in early January, it's been a pretty cool summer, which I don't mind at all! The grass is green, the water tanks are full and the bush fire threat has eased - for now. This February there's plenty of things to do on the coast. It's the perfect time to go swimming - the water is usually warm (much warmer than in January) and the holiday crowds have all gone home, leaving our pristine beaches practically empty. If you're in a sporty mood, head to the Sapphire Coast Turf Club for the 2 day Bega Cup weekend; it's a fantastic course with great facilities, on-course betting and family-friendly areas. You'll find more information on page 11. There's a new exhibition at the Eden

Killer Whale Museum featuring the extensive personal library of Captain Richard (Dick) Jolly, known locally and internationally as a salvage master. Go to page 6 for details. The main event this month is the fabulous Cobargo Folk Festival, held at the Cobargo Showground from February 21 - 23. With lots of local performers (and the coast has some pretty impressive musicians), as well as those from around Australia and around the world, there's a huge range of musical styles represented, as well as comedy and dance. It's a great weekend - have a look on pages 18 and 19 for more information. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable time in this gorgeous part of the world.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

2

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

Wreck, Rescue & Salvage - Highlights of the Dick Jolly Collection photographs, records and diaries, which he drew on when publishing his autobiography Wreck, Rescue & Salvage. Captain Jolly was a great supporter and active member of the Eden Killer Whale Museum, helping to establish the library collection in 1993. His name is recorded on the foundation stone of the Museum’s eastern wing extension which recognises the efforts of dedicated committee members. Captain Jolly completed a cadet apprenticeship with the Australian National Line and later served in the British Navy’s tug fleet in Malta. He then joined a British deep-sea towing company, where he was involved in towing, dredging and floating docks to all parts of the world. He served as captain for over 100 projects, and in 1981 was master of the Salviscount, the biggest tug in the world at that time. He undertook one of the world’s longest tows, which saw a dredger towed 13,000 km in 105 days from New Zealand to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Captain Jolly began his salvage career when he joined Selco in Singapore, travelling all over the world to manage fires, collisions, strandings and sinking vessels. His significant experience later saw him called as an expert witness in a wide variety of marine court cases. On his return home after the refloat of EDE

In late 2013, the Eden Killer Whale Museum acquired the vast personal library of the late Captain Richard (Dick) Jolly (1940-2009). Wreck, Rescue & Salvage, on display until the end of March, reveals Captain Jolly’s personal and professional interest in all things maritime. Captain Jolly was well known in Eden and internationally as a salvage master. He was one of only 40 people in the world appointed to a panel of salvage experts approved to represent all parties and their insurance companies. During his career he managed over 80 salvage jobs, ranging from fishing boats, passenger cruise ships and oil tankers. His last major salvage project was the successful refloating and towing of the infamous MV Pasha Bulker, which ran aground during a major storm in Newcastle in 2007. Captain Jolly’s keen interest in maritime history, along with his occupation as salvage and tug master, is reflected in his books, postcards and cigarette cards, salvage scrap books, photographs, navigation charts and log books. The collection complements the local salvage reports and photographs already held in the museum’s collection; significant for the detail they provide about practices, vessels and crews associated with Eden’s fishing industry. He was meticulous in documenting his projects, keeping

Pambula

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp and several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters here, including Broadwater Oysters.

At the southern end of Pambula is the project known as Panboola, extending from the edge of town to the Pambula River. Panboola, the Aboriginal name for the area, covers 77 hectares and is comprised of land that was previously privately owned, as well as sections of the Old Pambula Race course. It is a diverse estuarine and freshwater wetland comprising billabongs, saline areas, a tidal channel, mud flats, mangroves and saltmarsh. The wetlands provide a final filter for the town's storm water and floodplain runoff before entering the Pambula Lake, and at times are dry. They provide important breeding and nursery areas for a large range of animals including birds, fish and invertebrates. By protecting and restoring habitat for native wildlife, the whole area is being rehabilitated as a wetland for the purpose of nature conservation. Planted corridors have been established (and protected by fencing) to link existing plantings at the front (north) of the site to the Pambula River in the south. A series of walking tracks takes visitors through a range of vegetation types, including saltmarsh, billabongs and the Pambula River. Areas of farmland are still used for

grazing, with the income generated assisting with recurring costs. Panboola offers many recreational options, including bird-watching, picnicking, cycling, walking or just sitting and enjoying the view. Picnic tables and seats have been installed in Tips Billabong and the Waterbird Sanctuary making outdoor lunches easy, or just bring a picnic blanket. Shade, shelter and seating are also available in the re-vamped Kiosk, located beside the former race course in the south east section. Panboola is a favourite spot with locals for walking their dogs, but please note that dogs must be kept on a leash, and are restricted to roads; they are not permitted to enter through any gates. The main entrance to Panboola is off Bullara St, next to Robert Smith. Just down from the entrance over the arched bridge is an information booth that has brochures providing information about Panboola. Panboola is a wonderful place to experience nature, history and culture, and it doesn’t cost a cent.

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around the Fishpen area.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flight, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are several venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Lakeview Hotel wins Good Pub Food award

Once again the Lakeview Hotel in Merimbula has made it into the Sydney Morning Herald's Good Pub Food Guide. Only two pubs on the entire South Coast made it onto the final list, with the Lakeview taking out a coveted Two Schooner award. Deciding on finalists involved visiting more than 500 pubs across New South Wales, with 400 reviews written and scores allocated. These scores became the basis for awarding either a one, two or three Schooner award. The Lakeview received its Two Schooner award after being judged on its food, service, ambience and feel-good vibe. With fantastic views over Merimbula Lake, the Hotel is perfect for enjoying a meal with friends and family. The Lakeview's restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner, with counter meals also available in the Bar. The food is of a higher standard than your average pub meal, as reflected by its Two Schooner win. So for a meal as good as anything you'll find in Sydney or the regions, make a reservation this summer at the Lakeview. people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

Cobargo & Bermagui The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is far more than a working village. It is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the Laneway

markets. Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkeling, boating and canoeing. Throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River, or head out on one of the local charter boats. Don't miss a swim in the beautiful Blue

Tilba Living History

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores, and the famous Cheese Factory, all located on Central Tilba’s main street. guides and books, souvenirs, gifts, ice-cream and other refreshments – including freshly ground and brewed Byron Bay Coffee. Wagonga Inlet, Narooma © Paul Callaghan

Narooma Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet. Tucked between the coastal ranges and the ocean, Narooma is the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a 1950s fishing village vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean. Narooma has some easy cycling tracks, as well as being a great base for serious riders who are happy tackling rides 50km or longer.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore.

Moruya Riverside Park, Moruya © Paul Callaghan

Moruya Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the BrinjaYuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks, and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in

The first bridge across the Moruya River was erected in 1876, although frequent flooding meant new bridges had to be erected in 1900 and 1945 and, most recently, in 1966. World War 11 must have seemed a long way from Moruya to begin with, but as the war progressed, it had a direct impact on the town. The Moruya aerodrome became an advanced operational base, and in 1942 a trawler was attacked by the Japanese offshore between Moruya and Batemans Bay. On 25 December 1944 the US liberty ship SS Robert J. Walker was torpedoed off Moruya by the German submarine U-862. It sank the next day between Moruya and Bega, with 2 people dying and 67 survivors. These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden

poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.

Lee Chittick, Liam Ryan, Neil Roberts, Frazer Bull-Clark, Jay Kochel. A visual exploration of the vicissitudes of post millennium masculinity – caught in a struggle between metro-sexual gender politics and a biologically inherent, testosterone impelled macho imperative. This exhibition goes beyond romanticised heroic imagery, more prevalent in the arts, to interrogate reality on the ground. Is it, in fact, a No Man’s Land?

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards. Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.

What to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops

Clyde River, Batemans Bay © Paul Callaghan

Batemans Bay Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.

Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Enjoy the scenery along the Kings Highway on the way to the historic town of Braidwood with its beautiful buildings and interesting shops. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. Head north to Durras Lake for a spot of fishing, bushwalk in the Murramarang National Park or say hello to the kangaroos at Pebbly Beach.
