Cobargo Folk Festival
From the Editor

February What a wise decision you've made being on the Far South Coast in February! The ocean temperatures have warmed considerably, the crowds have dramatically thinned and the weather is great. If you want to slow down, you've come to the right place. The Far South Coast is the perfect place to chill out, whether it's spending time on the beach with a book, contemplating art or hanging out doing fun stuff with the family. There's great country racing at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club with the 2 day Bega Cup Carnival. Held on January 31st and February 1st, the Bega Cup weekend is a great day out for the whole family. Details on page 10. On the last weekend of the month, Cobargo plays host to the 20th Cobargo Folk Festival. Featuring
performers from around the globe and around Australia, the Folk Festival is something of a rite of passage for many young local musicians such as Daniel Champagne, Vendulka, Heath Cullen and Kim Churchill, who have all gone on to tour around the country and overseas. you'll find lots of information about the Cobargo Folk Festival on pages 21 and 22. Also at the end of February is the wonderful Sculpture on the Edge, now in its ninth year. Large sculptural pieces are scattered throughout the magnificent settings of Endeavour Point Headland, Dickinson Park, and Horseshoe Bay beach. You'll find more information in next month's iMag or visit www.sculpturebermagui.org.au Watch out for wildlife on the roads, and have a fabulous summer on the coast!

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
2
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

from overseas on designs of Canadian log cabins. He created a scale model of the cabin, secured building permission from the Girl Guide movement and oversaw the building of the cabin which was opened in 1936. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away at Edrom Lodge in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. The exhibition is on show until 8th March - details at www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

When you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. Logan built the beautiful Edrom Lodge as his family's home on the shores of Twofold Bay, now a heritage listed property located near the multi-purpose wharf. Taking three years to build and employing many locals, the construction of 'Edrom' as it was then known, was a boon to the Eden economy. Another local landmark that remains a symbol of Logan’s community spirit is the Log Cabin located in Bass Street. When he became aware that his daughter's girl guide brigade were desperate for a meeting place, Logan bought land and sourced information

Pambula
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local
produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an oldfashioned milkbar.
Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake. It's worth taking home some unopened oysters too for enjoying at a later date.
At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbeque. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below.
What to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse. Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.
Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during January as well as the annual Jazz Festival in June. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Happy 20th Anniversary to the Cobargo Folk Festival Alongside headliners Archie Roach and Shellie Morris, we are pleased to announce Irish supergroup ‘Heartstring Quartet’ as a late addition to the Cobargo Folk Festival program for 2015. “We are absolutely delighted to be able to make this late and exciting addition to our already packed program for this, the 20th Anniversary of the Cobargo Folk Festival,” said Festival Director Dave Crowden. “This is a unique opportunity to see on stage some of the legends of Irish music as they kick off an Australian tour that will take them to other major festivals and venues around the country.” Other headline acts include Ami
Williamson, Fiona Boyes, the region’s own Daniel Champagne, Duo Ramirez Satorre from Argentina and many, many more. Martin Wyndham-Read from the UK is making a welcome return to the festival. While Martin is well known for his popularisation of Aussie songs, he will also be presenting the music of the British Isles. He will be joined by guitarist and singer/songwriter Ken Nicol, formerly of the Albion Band and Steeleye Span. Canadians also feature prominently in the program with three singer/ songwriters – Ann Vriend, Scott Cook and Geordie Tentrees (from the Yukon),
together with humorous reciter and storyteller Jonathan Bob Lynn who enthralled audiences at last year’s festival. There's a huge dance program for the 2015 Festival. Latin, Scottish, Morris, Balkan, trad bush and a special Blues Tap workshop are in the planning. In short, the stage is slowly being set for a great 20th Anniversary Cobargo Folk Festival. The festival runs from 27th February to 1st March in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia. For early bird tickets and more info go to cobargofolkfestival.com Come and help us celebrate!

Tilba Living History
Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga Mountain, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.
Central Tilba Farm Cabins Ever wondered what happens on a real working farm? Central Tilba Farm Cabins offers you the opportunity to find out. The cabins are located at ‘Braeside’, an historic 350 acre Tilba property at the foot of spectacular Mt. Dromedary (Gulaga Mountain) with lots of beautiful bush. There are 4 fully self-contained cabins, each one separated from the others to ensure privacy. Cabins have a main bedroom with a queen sized bed and a connecting shower and toilet, and an open–plan kitchen/living/dining room with a television and twin bunks for the kids (bring your own linen). An open fireplace, well-stocked with split wood, guarantees cosy evenings for the whole family.
The cabins are a 3 minute drive to Central Tilba, and only 5 minutes to the beach, and are a perfect base for exploring all the fabulous sites of the local area. Talk to hosts Ron and Tralee, and you might even be able to bring your pet with you! Cabins cost from $60 per night in the off season to $100 per night during the Christmas holidays for the whole family. Once you’ve experienced a stay at Central Tilba Farm Cabins, you’re sure to become a regular. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.
Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards. Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.
