George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whalewatching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Eden is a great base to explore the area south to the border, and is surrounded by National Parks and State Forests. The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Etched in Stone: the stories behind Eden’s War Memorial Between 2014 - 2018, nations around the world are commemorating the centenary of the First World War. Eden Killer Whale Museum’s exhibition Etched in Stone provides a local perspective on the stories behind the names of the First World War servicemen who are commemorated on Eden’s Cenotaph. With the First World War being fought on shores far from Australia, few families were able to visit grave sites or battle grounds. Local memorials provided a formal place for communities to grieve and remember those whose who would never come home. They also provided a place of commemoration where a grave was not possible, usually for the sad situation where soldiers were missing, presumed killed. As early as October 1915, Australians began

establishing memorials commemorating those serving (or lost) overseas in the First World War. Coinciding with the first anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, fundraising for New South Wales’ state memorial began in 1916, although it was not officially opened until 1934. In the Bega Valley Shire, memorial fundraising committees started to form in the

Above: Unveiled at the Shire Council Chambers in 1922, Eden’s First World War memorial took the form of simple marble honour rolls. Memorial services were conducted here until the first official service was held at the new Cenotaph in 1967.

Above: Bill Stafford & sons William, Lot & Bob. Courtesy of Mr & Mrs R Stafford. Local brickmaker, Bill Stafford, gave his age as 45 years old but was actually 58 when he enlisted. Bill served in France until he was wounded in action and his true age was discovered while in hospital. William and Lot both served overseas with the Light Horse Regiment, with Lot going on to serve with the Volunteer Defence Force in WWII.

early 1920s. The second in the Shire, Eden’s First World War memorial was officially unveiled in 1922. This was in the form of two simple marble honour rolls that were erected either side of the Council Chambers in Eden, which were later removed and incorporated into a new Cenotaph built in 1966. Located on Calle Calle Street, the Cenotaph was built to include the names of local World War Two service personnel and today includes the names of personnel who have served in other theatres of war since. While memorials honour the names of service personnel, space prevents individual stories being told. The Fallen have always been given a special place in history, but what of the men who returned home physically and emotionally changed forever? Etched in Stone tries to understand the experience of some of Eden’s 122 First World War servicemen – the courageous and the deserters, the young and the old, the loss or survival of brothers, those who went on to serve in the Second World War and those who never made it out of Australia

the first time around. Etched in Stone is on display at Eden Killer Whale Museum until 2 December 2018.

A signaller with the 33rd Battalion, Ernie was recommended four times for gallant conduct and devotion to duty before being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service in France. HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Award winning Broadwater Oysters Oysters, like fine wines and cheeses, have a distinct flavour, depending on where they are grown. Pambula Lake oysters have a smooth, subtle flavour influenced by the water they are produced in. The clean, clear waters of Pambula Lake are a combination of fresh water moving down the Pambula and Yowaka rivers and tidal exchange from the Pacific Ocean - perfect for the production of the finest Sydney Rock Oysters. Broadwater Oysters won a Gold Medal at the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards in August 2009 for their locally grown oysters, following up on Silver Medals won in 2008. With new signage making it easier to discover them, you can visit Broadwater Oysters located on the Pambula Lake foreshore. Situated between Pambula and Eden, turn off the Princes Highway onto Landing Road and head down to the foreshore. Talk to farmers about oyster production and

watch oysters being freshly opened for local restaurants and the public to enjoy. Broadwater Oysters offer fresh award winning oysters to eat ‘natural’ by the Lake or to enjoy at home.

What’s new at Panboola? Panboola just keeps getting better. If it’s been a while since your last trip it’s worth visiting the wetlands again this Summer to see our newest additions or perhaps to discover some hidden gems. Upon arrival at Panboola our stunning guardian eagle greets you. This magnificent sculpture was created by local sculptor Richard Moffatt and was only recently unveiled. This acquisition was made possible by contributions from generous community members and supporters. Grab one of our new brochures from the info booth. It highlights Panboola’s extensive walking and cycling tracks. Try strolling out to the Pambula River via the Corridor and Bubble circuit. This 2.6km walk leads to one of Panboola’s best kept secrets. The intrepid bird observer may see

the elusive Southern Emu-wren amongst the shrubs here. At Watson’s Waterhole our new bridge has just been completed. The Panboola office is also located here and serves as an alternative entry point to the wetlands, with sealed car parking, stunning vistas and a walking tracks leading to the Old Racecourse Bar and beyond. Panboola is a bird-watchers paradise, a photographer’s delight and a lovely place for an easy bike ride or walk. Tables in Tips Billabong make a great venue for a picnic whilst the Waterbird Sanctuary provides a shady escape from the summer heat. Panboola is located on the southern edge of Pambula village and is open 7 days a week. Everyone is welcome!

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

34

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must; it provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. Also of interest is the Bega Pioneers Museum which houses a collection of photos, family histories, farm implements and machinery.

Bega Showjumping Cup celebrates 20th anniversary The prestigious Bega Showjumping Cup event is turning 20 and to celebrate, the Bega Showjumping Club is hosting an 8 day long party! From Monday 28th December - Monday 4th January, the Bega Showground will be home to hundreds of horses and their families, some who travel from as far away as Queensland and Victoria to participate. Two rings of showjumping will be running throughout the Festival, with a rest from competition on New Year's Day. Some of the best showjumpers in Australia are expected to attend, attracted by over $48,000 in prize money and bonus incentives. The Bega Showjumping Cup itself is run over 3 rounds, with the winner taking home $2,000 plus a custom, made-to-measure Antares saddle, valued at up to $7000. If someone takes out both the Cup on the 31st and the AM5 event on Jan 2nd, they'll receive a cash bonus

Everyone is welcome to come and watch the action - entry to the Showground is free. Events are held from 7.30am - 7pm daily (except 1st January - rest day). A canteen is available. With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen

from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground. Both are located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views. On the 16th and 17th January, Tathra becomes the base for the Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. Running since 2002, this event encompasses a fun run, 30km bike ride and a series of ocean swims from the Wharf to the Surf Lifesaving Club.

Stroll amongst the birds at On the Perch From the moment you drive through tall coastal forest and open pasture, you will love On the Perch Aviaries, the newest attraction on the Sapphire Coast. We have nearly 50 species of birds on display from Australia, Africa and the Asia Pacific region. In our two walk-in aviaries you can get up close and personal with birds including Bush Stone Curlews, Satin Bowerbirds and Purple-crowned Lorikeets.

Mornings are the best time to visit us, as this is when the birds are most active. It's also when you'll see our Keepers hard at work.

Above: Bush Stone Curlew

At 11am, our Meet the Keeper talks are very popular. If you are looking to personalise your visit, our Keeper for a Day program gives you the chance! Enjoy a coffee in ‘Brood Café’, the café with a difference where you can sit and watch the ‘Kimberley Aviary’ as well as enjoy hearing the birds in the outdoor aviaries from a distance. The Bower Gift Shop offers a range of gifts, local art and a small range of local produce. Left: Gouldian Finch

A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production. The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of the buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs.

Intriguing Cobargo

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town.

Happy 21st birthday Cobargo Folk Festival! Most readers will have been to one or more music festivals over the years; but how many have been to a Folk Festival? Folk festivals aren't just about a whole lot of blokes with beards singing about droving or singer/song writers pouring out their hearts about the problems of the world. There’s a whole lot more than that to be enjoyed at the 21st Cobargo Folk Festival, held on February 26th to 28th at the picturesque Cobargo Showground. Here’s what one first timer told our survey people about last year’s festival. “Great atmosphere, the friendliness of the volunteers, the ability to camp so close to the music, the tip-top organisation that has obviously gone into every detail to make the festival run so smoothly. This was my first time to Cobargo, and I would say it’s been the best festival I've attended all year. I loved it, the friendly relaxed atmosphere and the wonderful top-quality entertainment not too big, not too small, just right. I'll be back next year, for sure.” Cobargo attracts many big local and international acts that perform at big festivals like the National Folk Festival in Canberra, the Port Fairy Festival and the Blue Mountains Festival. Festivals like Cobargo cater for a wide range

of musical tastes and introduce you to music and performers you might not have seen or heard before – ranging from the bush music and dance mentioned above, to toe-tapping traditional Irish music, American bluegrass, French music, the music of Asturias in Spain, exciting Japanese Drumming, the blues and, yes, singer songwriters who write about life and protest. There's also comedy, mini-festivals for young kids, and for teenagers there's The Crossing, where young people get to shine on stage. Folk festivals, especially intimate and friendly festivals like Cobargo, are great for taking part in the many workshops from singing, guitar to accordion and tango, or performing in front of appreciative audiences. The more you participate, the more you enjoy. There are too many headliners to list here – but look out for the Rambling Boys from Ireland, Aussie Delta blues stars the Backsliders, talented West Australian duo, Gina Williams and Guy Ghose, Nicola Hayes and Helene Brunet from France, up-tempo Canadian band the East Pointers, Neil Murray from the famous Warumpi Band, and the Bega Valley’s own guitar hero, Daniel Champagne, back from his great success in the USA. Full details of this year’s performers as well as ticket prices and more information can be found at www.cobargofolkfestival.com

Dear iMag readers, We could rave on about the beauty and serenity that embraces the Central Tilba landscape, it's location, the history, the quirky village...but we think this visitor's TripAdvisor review will give you some insight. Kylie and Jason, owners of Passionfish, Central Tilba "My husband and I were taking a two week tour for our honeymoon when we dropped into Tilba. As we wandered through the town we came across Passionfish and I was immediately drawn in by the most amazing smell! We had been told by friends in Sydney that we had to visit the store and I can see why! They hand make all of their candles using soy wax which is fantastic. I was in love with a particular fragrance of soy candle but liked a different colour to match my dĂŠcor and it was absolutely no problem. I could order any fragrance in any colour! Beautiful and unique ideas for your home will keep you drooling as you wander around the

shop, I did not want to leave! They also had some really pretty jewellery which my husband surprised me with! The owners are just so lovely and we had a really memorable experience in this pretty little town. We would definitely recommend anyone passing through to stop and take a look at Passionfish, I absolutely guarantee you will love this beautiful town and you will definitely take home something from this amazing little store. Best of all if you fall in love with a product, chances are you can order it and have it sent to you, but nothing beats the experience of seeing this store in person if you get the chance :)" Visited October '14 www.passionfish.com.au

Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet, and it's also the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the

mountains and the ocean. Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top ecotourism destination, you can take a National Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. It's also a great place to go bike riding, with a tracks around town that are perfect for kids to practice. If you're a hard-core mountain bike enthusiast, there are mountain bike tracks and sealed roads aplenty to check out, including some great tracks through local state forests and national parks. If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore.

Picturesque Moruya Things to See & Do Stroll or ride your bike through Moruya's Riverside Park Take a drive alongside the beautiful Moruya River Head south and visit Bodalla's historic All Saints Church VISITOR INFORMATION Moruya Library, Vulcan St Moruya 44741333 Open Monday to Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday 9:30am - 12pm

Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the Brinja-Yuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge

pylons, 173,000 blocks and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in Hyde Park. These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer. Moruya Heads is about 10 km to the east of the town. Moruya Heads Beach is home of the local sur life saving club, so it's a great place to swim safely with the family. Congo and Bingi are located south of Moruya and also feature beautiful unspoilt beaches. If you're keen to go bush, then head to the Deua National Park, the largest park in the South East region. There are plenty of great tracks to hike on, including one from the Berlang campground to the gaping chasm of The Big Hole. Further along the same track is the ancient rock feature of Marble Arch, where stalactites hang from ancient elevated ceilings.

Dreams come true at Moruya’s ‘To Di For’ The owner of ‘To Di For Designer Accessories’, Moya Finch, has always had a love of fashion and decorating. She once told her husband, “I’m going to work in that boutique one day,” never dreaming she would end up owning it. Dreams really do come true. Moya loves anything unique and unusual and this is reflected in the range of clothing, bags, accessories and homewares that To Di For carries. There are fantastic labels including Salt, 7 Sisters, Boo Radley and Marilyn Seyb, just to mention a few. As well as fashion, there is a great range of coastal living and decorative homewares, including natural cane, timber, shells, furniture and other ‘must haves’. The very popular and well known paintings by artist Martina Penning can also be found here along with paintings by Hilary Bell, who specialises in coastal scenes of pelicans and

tranquil boats. Come and meet Moya and her friendly staff for an inspiring and unique shopping experience. Moruya has it all - old world charm, beautiful boutiques, great eateries and wonderful beaches and scenery. Visit soon - you’ll be glad you did.

Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won the Cultural and Heritage Tourism award at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards four times, as well as winning the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award in 2011. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth

century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different. Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. The Zoo also has the largest collection of primates in any private Zoo in Australia. Not far from Mogo is the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens that features plants native to the Eurobodalla region. Stroll along the 6km of pathways observing a variety of birds and other native wildlife. Two tracks provided access to the Gardens for those with prams or limited mobility. With features including display gardens, a sensory garden, herbarium, nursery, arboretum, picnic, playground and barbeque areas, there are plenty of opportunities for children to burn off some energy. Entry to the Botanic Gardens is free, and every Sunday morning at 11am there are free guided walks with a trained volunteer guide.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans

Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
