We hope you enjoy your little bit of summer with us, whether you're a local, a regular or a first-time visitor to this small piece of paradise. Clean beaches, clean air, scenery to die for - and best of all, it's not that crowded. The Tathra Wharf to Waves weekend is a fantastic community event that features mountain bike races and ocean swims from the newly-renovated Tathra Wharf. With funds raised going to local community groups, it's a great event to support. Read more on page 36.
There's also a screening of the Doctor Who Christmas Special on December 26th in Bega, the Tathra Lions Club pig races at Tathra as well as a fantastic program of more traditional horse-racing at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whalewatching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Eden is a great base to explore the area south to the border, and is surrounded by National Parks and State Forests. The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Kittyhawks Down exhibition at Eden Killer Whale Museum These airmen were all awarded Purple Hearts for their contribution to the Second World War and their stories are told through photographs and artefacts recovered from the wreck sites. Kittyhawks Down is on display at Eden Killer Whale Museum until 4 June 2017.
Eden Killer Whale Museum’s latest exhibition Kittyhawks Down commemorates the 75th anniversary of the loss of four American pilots in Australia during the Second World War. Around 1 million American personnel served in Australia during the war as a result of new military ties being developed with America over Britain. On 28 March 1942, four Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawks left Canberra on a training flight for the Snowy Mountains. Hampered by thick fog and bad weather, the pilots found themselves hopelessly lost on the Far South Coast. It is believed two of the pilots may have clipped mid air above Eden, resulting in their fatal crashes near Wonboyn and on Mount Imlay. Second Lieutenants Fielder and Namola successfully landed their planes on Aslings Beach in Eden and Berridale (south of Cooma) but sadly both were later killed while serving in Darwin.
Below: 2nd Lieut A E Fielder safely landed at Aslings Beach in 1942 but a take-off attempt from Boydtown Beach failed and the Kittyhawk was dismantled for road transport to Canberra. Fielder was killed just three months later in a training flight near Darwin. Courtesy of the Whiter Family.

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake
The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.
Little Bottler - bargains, fine wines - they've got it all. There’s nothing like a cold beer on a hot summer’s day, and Pambula Little Bottler has a fantastic range of local and imported beers to choose from. With boutique breweries becoming more popular, specialty beers of all kinds are being produced, and Glen Baker, proprietor of Pambula Little Bottler has a wide selection. There’s also an extensive range of premium wines, cleanskins, and spirits, and knowledgeable staff to help you choose the right drink for all occasions. In fact, Pambula Little Bottler was recently awarded the ILG NSW Liquor Retailer of the Year award from a field of more than 500 entrants. Conveniently located in Toalla St. Pambula (just up from the tennis courts), and with plenty of car parking available, it’s easy to pop in for a slab or linger over your choice of the perfect red.
Knowing that everyone loves a good bargain, Glen offers weekly specials that compare well with the big chains. According to their regular customers, Pambula Little Bottler has the best range of fine wines on the South Coast, but don’t take their word for it, check it out for yourself. Pambula Little Bottler is at 4/13 Toalla St. Pambula, phone 6495 6335, and is open 7 days a week from 9.30am to 8pm during summer.

Award winning Broadwater Oysters Like fine wine and cheese, oysters have a distinct flavour depending on where they are grown. Oysters from Pambula Lake have a smooth, subtle flavour influenced by the water they are produced in. The clean, clear waters of Pambula Lake are a combination of fresh water moving down the Pambula and Yowaka rivers, and tidal exchange from the Pacific Ocean - perfect for the production of the finest Sydney Rock Oysters. Broadwater Oysters have been farming and processing the native Sydney Rock Oysters in Pambula Lake for 20 years. You can visit Broadwater Oysters on the Pambula Lake foreshore - talk to farmers about how oysters are grown and watch oysters being freshly opened for local restaurants and the general public. Situated between Pambula and Eden, turn off the Princes Highway onto Landing Road and head down to the lake foreshore.
Broadwater Oysters offer fresh award winning oysters & selection of other seafood to eat ‘natural’ by the lake or enjoy at home. www.broadwateroysters.com.au

Immerse yourself in nature at Panboola! Go for a stroll, ride your bike, watch the birds or simply enjoy nature. It’s good for the body and it’s great for the soul. Pambula is blessed to have Panboola on its doorstep. Grab a snack from one of the many nearby cafes and head to the picnic tables by the side of Tips Billabong. Escape the heat and enjoy a shaded walk through the Waterbird Sanctuary. The 2.6km walk out to the Pambula River is one of our best kept secrets – you are almost guaranteed to have the sandy beach to yourself! Bike riders love Panboola – it’s a perfect venue for families to enjoy a safe and easy ride together. Cycle around the Old Pambula Racecourse or pass through if you are riding out to lunch at Oaklands. Panboola is a bird watchers paradise with over 160 species
recorded. You might even get to see the elusive Southern Emu Wren amongst the shrubs if you travel quietly out toward the river via the Corridor Circuit. The Panboola Centre at Watson’s Waterhole (behind the Idlewilde Motel) provides an alternate entry point with sealed car park, picnic tables and stunning vistas. Also to be found here is our original beautiful eagle sculpture. This artwork was stolen some time ago however earlier this year, much to our joy, was found and returned to us. Panboola sits on community owned land and is managed by a team of volunteers. We are located on the southern edge of Pambula and are open 7 days a week. Everyone is welcome.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Both tracks are just under 100 metres in length, and are fun for all the family. Don’t forget the Tree Climb Challenge for those with a taste for adventure (minimum age is 9). Magic Mountain is open 10am - 4pm (weather permitting) and age and height restrictions apply. Details at www.magicmountain.net.au

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the

case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre is a wonderful reproduction of the original butter factory that was situated on the site in the early 20th century and has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's. It provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. For those interested in the history of Bega, the Museum in the heart of the town houses a collection of photos, family histories, farm implements and machinery. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. There's a fantastic walking track that goes all the way from the sporting fields near the Bridge over to the Bega River. The track then follows the Old Racecourse.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during the East Coast Low that hit the region in June, and it may still be closed to the public for some time. You can still enjoy the view from the car park adjacent

to the Wharf though. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground. Both are located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.
Tathra The Ticket For Ocean Swim And Bike Track Fans Ocean swim fans and lovers of mountain bike tracks won’t be disappointed by visiting Tathra on the third weekend of January 2017 for the annual Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. The series of ocean swims on Sunday January 15th, is in its 16th year, and could be seen as the highlight of what promises to be an actionpacked weekend on the far south coast of NSW. On Saturday, January 14th, there’s a 2km fun run on Tathra Beach from the Country Club to the Surf Club, while mountain bike enthusiasts will also be in action that day, with a 30km ‘Bega to the Beach’ ride from Bega across Dr George Mountain to the coast. Experienced triathletes and anyone who wants to give it a shot can sign up for all three activities, but traditionally, it's the swim that's the attraction, with organisers expecting well over 500 entrants this year. Sunday is the big day for all the family, with visitors and locals invited to enter one of a series of 600m swims according to their age bracket (eight classes, for age 10 and up) or the
1200m On the Perch 'Splash for Cash' open race (from age 12 and up) which offers a $500 cash prize for the first male and first female onto the beach and an artwork by a local artist. Lots of prizes for places in the 600m series swims and major random draw prizes over the weekend including holiday packages in Tathra and up in the Snowy Mountains, a Raw Surfboard and a fantastic Mountain Bike. All the swims start from the historic Tathra Wharf, a remnant of the days when steamers carried goods and passengers along the coast. In use from 1862-1952, it was restored by the National Trust and local residents. A wide range of people have taken part in the event over the last 12 years so entrants could find themselves lining up with seasoned ocean swimmers, AFL footballers and Commonwealth Games medallists, with competitors coming from around Australia on a regular basis. Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira River Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park
Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village though; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has it's old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.
South Coast Leather Rogue's Gallery South Coast Leather, built in 1913, occupies what was originally one of Cobargo's butcher shops and still utilises the original chopping block as one of its display items. An interesting array of ancient battered hats sit overhead from an Akubra Hat competition. The winning hat was 46 years old. The previous owners still visit their old hats, affectionately known as "the Rogue's gallery". South Coast Leather are stockists of quality leathergoods from keyrings to luggage and everything in between in a variety of leathers, textures and colours. Legendary gear from R.M. Williams and Akubra compliment the leathergoods and Australian
Made is proudly promoted in the shop. Fashion hats, scarves, shoes and bags can be found in the extensive range and all just a little bit fabulous. Classic leather belts are hand-made on the premises. You can also pick up a brochure for the Cobargo Historic Village Walk, another reason to visit. South Coast Leather looks forward to welcoming you soon. Princes Highway, Cobargo, NSW. Phone: 6493 6655 Email: scleath@bigpond.net.au www.southcoastleather.com.au

Cobargo Folk Festival Success The key to the continued success of the Cobargo Folk Festival (CFF) – now entering its 22nd year – is to look at all the things you’ve done and improve them, if you can. That success was formally recognised this year when it was awarded the gold “Best Festival” award at the South Coast Tourism Awards, held in Wollongong in October. Judges were particularly impressed that the festival is run solely by volunteers and that it manages to inject an estimated $1.5 million into the local economy each year. This year’s festival – being held at the Cobargo Show Ground from February 24th - 26th – promises another superb showcase of the best folk and roots music, dance and spoken word, from around Australia and internationally. Artistic Director Dave Crowden and his team received a record-breaking 340 performer applications – many of them from international acts who tour Australia to play at larger festivals like the National Folk Festival in Canberra or Port Fairy in Victoria. From those applications, some 40 acts (see poster opposite) have been chosen to perform for the 3000 plus people who are expected to attend. The number of attendees has grown steadily in recent years, as the festival’s reputation becomes better known in Australia and overseas. Numbers like that bring their own particular

headaches, including, venue capacity, camping space, parking, on site facilities like toilets and showers and keeping everyone well fed and watered. The festival organising team has been working hard this year to improve the site, introduce new parking areas, streamline camping (nowadays there are a lot more caravans and motor homes than a decade ago) make sure toilet and shower facilities are adequate, increase the capacity of our venues and offer greater choices in food and beverages. The Festival is also keen to attract more lovers of dance, with an increased dancing program to suit people who like watching and taking part in many different dancing styles. If you are a first timer and unsure what to expect, try coming for just one day – though that is hardly enough to take in the dozens of world class performers you could see. Festival organisers want the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla communities to take pride in and enjoy this award winning event that attracts people from around the country each year. They promise a safe, entertaining, family and environment-friendly three days with a range of performances that has something for everyone including kids and young adults. Come along and see what everyone has been talking about. You can find more info on the acts on our webpage – www. cobargofolkfestival.com or track us down on Facebook.

Passionfish - A Traveller's Tale Dear iMag readers, We could rave on about the beauty and serenity that embraces the Central Tilba landscape, it's location, the history, the quirky village...but we think this visitor's TripAdvisor review will give you some insight. Kylie and Jason, owners of Passionfish, Central Tilba "My husband and I were taking a two week tour for our honeymoon when we dropped into Tilba. As we wandered through the town we came across Passionfish and I was immediately drawn in by the most amazing smell! We had been told by friends in Sydney that we had to visit the store and I can see why! They hand make all of their candles using soy wax which is fantastic. I was in love with a particular fragrance of soy candle but liked a different colour to match my dĂŠcor and it was absolutely no problem. I could order any fragrance in any colour! Beautiful and unique ideas for your home will keep you drooling as you wander around the shop, I did not want to leave! They also had some really pretty jewellery which my husband surprised me with! The owners are just so lovely and we had a really memorable experience in this pretty little town. We would definitely recommend anyone passing through to stop and take a look at Passionfish, I absolutely guarantee you will love this beautiful town and you will definitely take home something from this amazing little store.
Best of all if you fall in love with a product, chances are you can order it and have it sent to you, but nothing beats the experience of seeing this store in person if you get the chance :)" Visited October '14 www.passionfish.com.au

Have an unforgettable experience with Narooma Charters Narooma Charters have been operating from Narooma for over 30 years, and with their fleet now expanded to two large boats, managers Norm and Nick Ingersole and their staff are able to offer a wide range of tours at the best charter prices in town. Being the most experienced crew operating out of Narooma means they know where all the good fishing and diving spots are, and they loves sharing that knowledge with their clients. For instance, large numbers of seals are staying at Montague Island over the summer months, making it a perfect place for snorkelling or diving. Australian Fur Seals are very friendly towards those exploring their underwater world, and love to play all around you as they demonstrate just what poetry in motion really means. It's also expected to be a great Kingfish season, with fish starting to bite early; good catches of reef fish have also been made this year. You can see them on an evening tour between
September and January. Narooma Charters run fishing trips both morning and afternoon, and you can expect to make some remarkable catches. Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans
Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great National Parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer.
