January Welcome to 2012 on the Far South Coast. I'm actually writing this in early December, and it was so cold last night we lit the fire - summer seems an awfully long way away!

But hopefully by the time you read this, the sun has appeared and the weather has warmed up. If not, there are still plenty of things to do in the region that are just as much fun whether it's hot or not.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service run a fantastic program over January in several National Parks. You can try everything from rock pool rambles, creative writing, Aboriginal bushwalks and snorkelling. Details of the Parks' Discovery Program are on pages 14 and 15.

Anyone who loves agricultural shows but not the massive crowds that are often found in capital cities should visit the 103rd Annual Pambula Show.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.

Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

Australia’s first settler houses show the way for reducing our carbon footprint.

Despite recent efforts to make our homes more environmentally friendly, Australians now use more water and land per person than most countries including China, Russia, India and the UK. By the mid 2030s it is estimated that worldwide we will be consuming the earth’s renewable resources at twice the rate that they can be regenerated.

The Historic Houses Trust exhibition Built for the Bush: Green Architecture of Australia which has been touring regional New South Wales since November last year, looks at traditional rural architecture and how many of the energy efficient strategies and practices of early settler houses have re-appeared in contemporary sustainable architecture. A range of both traditional and contemporary houses are showcased in the exhibition to illustrate the use of these low energy strategies, including an example from Merimbula.

For Australia’s early rural settlers, building simple, efficient homes was a necessity due to their limited access to materials, skills and resources.

Now in the 21st century, traditional 19th century practices are inspiring a new generation to return to these

low-energy solutions and minimize the environmental impact of modern housing.

The exhibition highlights the benefits of early settler ways that used earth and timber, natural materials that were close at hand and easily worked and corrugated iron. Simple house designs used light and air for their heating and cooling properties and water, the most essential resource for survival, was carefully captured and conserved.

Built for the Bush is open from 17th September until 13th February 2012.

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.

Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.

European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.

In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.

Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses.

Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.

At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years.

Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos.

Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.

Fun for all at the Pambula Show Do you remember the excitement of an annual country show? Laying awake at night anticipating the thrill of the rides and the chance to win a big fluffy animal as those little balls go down the clown's mouth.

The Show is an important part of local history and culture; the 2012 Pambula Show is the 103rd show in 107 years.

rides, face painting, alpacas and more.

Equestrian events start at 8.30am with six rings including showjumping. It's not just horses jumping though; a feature every year is the dog high jump – enter your dog for great prizes!

For those who like fast and furious entertainment, starting mid-afternoon there are motocross time trials, featuring a big line-up of small bikes through to seniors.

The woodchop competition starts at 11.00am, the grand parade features vintage cars and the Pavilion will be filled with art, craft, needlework, photography, cooking, preserves, vegetables and flower exhibits.

Tuck into great food from the canteen, have a cold beer or enjoy a quiet cuppa with scones, jam and cream in the Pavilion tea room, or try some dutch pancakes, hot potatoes or the traditional fare in sideshow alley.

Panboola is a 77 hectare area of floodplain, situated adjacent to the township of Pambula. Site of the original township, Panboola has a long history of indigenous and European occupation.

Panboola is now being rehabilitated with community assistance as a wetland for the purposes of nature conservation and for public enjoyment.

Fresh water billabongs lead to saline areas within and around the former racecourse, then through saltmarsh and mangroves to the tidal Pambula River beyond. Ben Boyd National Park and SEPP 14 wetlands adjoin the south western boundaries.

A system of walking tracks has been developed, leading visitors to destinations such as saltmarsh, historic points, information panels and birdwatching areas.

The Old Pambula Racecourse has a 4m wide sand track and is great spot for children to ride their bikes.

Information about Panboola is available at the Bullara St entrance, just past Robert Smith Complete Furnishers. Please note that dogs are not allowed within fenced areas, including the Racecourse.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.

There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend has fun for the whole family

Each year since 2002, over 400 people jump into the crystal blue waters around the historic Tathra Wharf to participate in the Tathra Wharf to Waves Ocean Swim.

The swim claims centre stage of a weekend of fun and fitness in Tathra, which includes a Beach Fun Run and a Mountain Bike Ride on the Saturday, followed by a day of swim events on the Sunday.

Saturday 21st January will kick off with the Coastlife Tathra Beach 2km Fun Run at 3pm. All members of the family can enter this run, which starts on the beach just north of the Tathra Beach Country Club and finishes in front of the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

This year lots of great prizes will be on offer for serious and not so serious competitors in age categories from school-aged children to over 40s!

At 5pm the Bega to the Beach 40km Mountain Bike Ride leaves Bega and travels over Dr George Mountain to Tathra through some of the most breathtaking bushland scenery the Sapphire Coast has to offer.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.

Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region.

Bega has seen its demographics change over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle.

Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

The new Sapphire Marketplace complex has opened after a 15 month construction phase, bringing nationally

recognised retail outlets to Bega.

Sapphire Marketplace opens Hundreds of people flocked to Bega in December for the grand opening of the new retail complex, the Sapphire Marketplace. Some came from as far away as Canberra, an interesting twist given that locals usually travel to Canberra for serious shopping. Now it's the other way around.

Housing the largest Big W store outside of Sydney, plus other retailers including Dick Smith, Millers, Payless Shoes, Prouds and many others, the complex took over 15 months to construct.

250 jobs were created during the building phase, with 300 people now employed within the Marketplace.

The official opening ceremony kicked off at 9am with St Patrick’s School choir performing the national anthem, followed by Kathy Jones, a marketplace employee, who gave the Welcome to Country.

Speaking at the opening, local member Andrew Constance said “We are watching an incredible day for our region and not just Bega. We haven’t seen this type of development in the region ever before so it's unchartered waters in terms of change. This will deliver many years of prosperity for our region.”

Sapphire Marketplace is located on Auckland St, behind the main shopping centre on Carp St.

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation.

Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source

of income for the area.

The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometers south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, gift ware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

The entire village of Central Tilba

was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop.

Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Well, now that Christmas is over, the visitors have gone home and all the entertaining is finished, more time can be spent in the garden where there are a number of jobs that can be done to get the garden through the latter part of Summer and into Autumn.

Summer brings with it hot drying winds that can cause damage to supple new growth that has grown on the plants over the spring/summer period. Some of this growth can become a bit tatty, so a light prune will tidy it up and encourage new growth for Autumn. Don't cut plants back too hard as understorey shaded foliage could burn if exposed too quickly to the sun.

As mentioned in a previously, mulching is of the highest importance. Plants that are well-mulched will continue growing through the warmer months, and the requirement for excessive watering will

be eased. Using a soft mulch like sugar cane or lucerne will also have the added benefit of improving the structure and texture of the soil as it decomposes.

The cutting back or dead heading of perennials and roses can now be done.

This will encourage new growth and a repeat flowering in Autumn. Keep an eye on roses for aphids and thrips; a spray with a systemic spray will keep them under control.

For those of us on the coast, the added problem of humidity brings with it fungal diseases. Use a fungicide as a preventative spray, rather than waiting until the disease appears. It's usually too late to spray at this point - the damage has been done.

Something not frequently discussed are the lawns surrounding our garden beds. It is important at this time of the year to raise the mowing height a

couple of notches. The grass will survive a prolonged hot spell if not too short, and low-mown grasses tend to have shallower roots that use more water. Also, now that the grandkids have gone home, check the lawns for Bindii; if you find them, use a selective Bindii spray.

Along with all the good gardening practices mentioned already, we must also be aware of our general watering practices. A good deep watering of garden beds once a week encourages deep root growth, which in turn reduces the need for watering every second day or so. Then everything is a winner.

Just up the road from Narooma is Bodalla, the village with the magnificent stone church and many other historic buildings. The village was developed by Thomas Mort in the late 1800s as a private country estate based around the dairy and cheese making industries, which still dominate Bodalla today.

All Saints Anglican Church was commissioned by the Mort family in memory of Thomas Mort and his wife.

Work began on the Church in 1880 and was completed in 1901.

Further north, the township of Moruya also has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore.

It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place.

These days however, Moruya is known

for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.

Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.
