Mallacoota – Heart of the Coastal Wilderness Mallacoota is one of Gippsland’s great escapes, surrounded by the magnificent wilderness of the Croajingolong National Park and set on the beautiful Mallacoota Inlet.

Unwind at this pretty coastal town, blessed with Victoria's warmest winter temperatures and cool ocean breezes in summer. Water is in abundance in this region, so activities including surfing, fishing, swimming, sailing and boating are ideal in the many inlets, lakes and rivers around the town.

Mallacoota is located 23 km from the highway turn off at Genoa, so there is no through traffic to disrupt the tranquillity of the picturesque town nestled on the shores of the inlet at its entrance point to Bass Strait.

Life moves at a leisurely pace where everyone has a chat, and the latest news is about the biggest fish landed yesterday and when the prawn run will start. Visitors will find all their needs catered for with ample shopping facilities, accommodation and entertainment. There is a visitor information shed, lake cruises, hire boats, bikes and kayaks, organized tours and walking tracks dotted throughout the township, with boat launching ramps at four locations. Boat owners are encouraged to explore the coastline with twelve picnic jetties with

free barbecues and casual moorings.

Discover the coast from the popular patrolled Bastion Point Beach and Betka Beach, to the rugged Quarry Beach where snorkellers explore the rocks, or the peaceful Secret Beach.

The Top Lake, Bottom Lake, the inlets, cliffs and beaches are all great places to explore - or just sit and watch the beautiful sunsets for which the area is renowned. You may even spot a mighty Southern Right whale from vantage points around the town during the migrating season.

Historic attractions include evidence of indigenous occupation with numerous visible middens and stone used in tool making and the fully restored WWII communication bunker museum at the airport.

Mallacoota is situated within the Croajingolong National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve recognised for its unique flora and fauna and its essential role in the preservation of native Australian species.

Undoubtedly one of Australia's most spectacular parks, Croajingolong encompasses 100 kilometres of coast and hinterland and features an extraordinary diversity of landscapes from pure white sandy beaches, rocky coastal headlands and granite peaks to rambling heathland, lush

rainforests and towering eucalypts. It also supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, with more than 1000 native plants and over 300 bird species.

Accommodation in Mallacoota is diverse and caters for couples, families and groups with four and five star outlets available in Gipsy Point, a beautiful peninsula jutting into the top lake of the Mallacoota Inlet, home to a large mob of kangaroos.

If you are towing a van, camping or driving in an RV, the Foreshore Holiday Park is not to be missed. The park is situated right on the lake shore within easy walking distance of the town centre and provides a number of sites with access to private moorings right on the lake. It is one of the largest caravan parks in Victoria and one of the only parks that offer both boat and caravan sites in the one package.

January Welcome to 2013 on the Far South Coast; the beginning of another year I hope it's a good one for you and your family.

From Eden to Batemans Bay there are tons of activities, exhibitions, markets and live music happening, so make the most of it all and have fun! Don't forget to set aside a little bit of time for relaxing though, otherwise you'll need a holiday to recover from your holiday.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service run a fantastic program over January in several National Parks. You can try everything from rainforest walks, canoeing, tours of Davidson Whaling Station and snorkelling. Details of the Parks' Discovery Program is on page 15.

Anyone who loves agricultural shows but not the massive crowds that are often found in capital cities should visit the 104th Annual Pambula Show.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.

Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.

Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.

European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.

In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.

Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.

At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years.

Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos.

Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.

Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Eat, browse and enjoy at Settler's Cottage Historic Settler's Cottage, located near the turn-off to Pambula Lake, has just been re-opened following extensive renovations.

New owners Tracy and Ian have done a fantastic job of updating this historic building, which was once the Manager's home in a pine plantation, before being dismantled and transported to its current site.

Tracy makes delicious home-made cakes, slices and Devonshire Teas, and light lunches using locally sourced fresh ingredients, including Ploughman's Lunch Platters.

It's easy to while away an afternoon in

the beautiful garden setting, catching up with friends over lunch, or linger over a coffee. But it's not just the food that's good; old-fashioned friendly service is provided in abundance too.

Settler's Cottage also has a range of collectables and memorabilia, local art and craft and beautiful home décor and giftware.

If you're inspired by the garden, there are herbs and vegetable seedlings available for sale too.

Fun for all at the Pambula Show Do you remember the excitement of an annual country show? Laying awake at night anticipating the thrill of the rides and the chance to win a big fluffy animal as those little balls go down the clown's mouth. Or perhaps you remember the spectacular flowers and amazing craftwork in the Pavilion?

Or was it the tense excitement of the showjumping? Maybe your thing was those strong men sending chips and sweat flying in the woodchop events?

Well, you can relive your childhood and share it with your children or grandchildren at the Annual Pambula Show on Saturday 12th January 2013.

An important part of local history and culture; the 2013 Pambula Show is the 104th show in 108 years.

For the kids there's plenty of free entertainment with the farm animal patting paddock, face painting, Fizzics science show, Toot the Magic Clown, dray rides, alpacas and balloon sculpting. Side show alley and the rides will be operating all day.

Equestrian events start at 8.30am with

hack, showjumping, breeds, sporting, stockhorse and novelty rings. The dog high jump is on again too.

For those who like fast and furious there is a big Endurocross event with six races.

The woodchop competition starts at 11am, the grand parade features vintage cars and the Pavilion, with increased prize money, will be filled with art, craft, needlework, photography, cooking, preserves, vegetables and flower exhibits.

New this year is a showcase of local produce including oyster judging, wine, coffee, olives, ice cream, goats milk soap and more. Lots of market stalls too.

Tuck into great food from the canteen, have a cold beer or enjoy a quiet cuppa with scones, jam and cream in the Pavilion tea room, or try some dutch pancakes, hot potatoes or the traditional fare in sideshow alley.

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.

Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.

There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme.

For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June.

Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

Sapphire the koala has this thing. After the visitor train goes past, she waits expectantly in her tree, hanging out slightly, waiting for people to arrive.

She loves meeting them. She loves cuddles just as much, too, and one of her keepers will often have to spend a bit of time with her, after the talks are over, trying to coax her back onto her tree.

“Mmm, yummy leaves,” rarely works, but (you know) they have to try.

Sometimes she can be tricked onto a branch if the keeper can turn quickly enough.

Failing all that, there’s always the radio call for ‘cuddle backup’ – another keeper comes and takes over cuddle duties and, after a while, tries the same routine.

Sapphire, of course, knows exactly what she’s doing.

Tips for when you’re visiting Potoroo: * The kangaroos love scratches on the chest, just below the neck *When patting an echidna, there’s one direction that works best! *Listen to what the cockatoos are saying - it’s often not a random comment *When meeting a python, introduce yourself at python speed.

Every Wednesday and Thursday night during January, the Merimbula Aquarium and Wharf Restaurant is holding a Kids Club that's sure to keep young ones entertained whilst the adults enjoy a relaxed meal.

Each child who is booked into the restaurant for dinner at 6pm receives free entry to the Kids Club, located downstairs in the Aquarium. The Kids Club kicks off at 6.45pm, after dinner has finished.

Activities will include a treasure hunt,

classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952.

Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other

walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants.

On the 21st and 22nd January, Tathra is becomes the base for the Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. Running since 2002, this event now encompasses a fun run, 40km bike ride and ocean swims from the Wharf to the Surf Lifesaving Club.

Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend has fun for the whole family Each year over 400 people jump into the crystal blue water of Tathra from the historic Tathra Wharf and swim to the beach in the Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend.

Why not join them and experience the thrill of being part of one of the Far South Coast’s premier events.

The swim claims centre stage of a weekend of fun and fitness in Tathra, which includes a 2km Beach Fun Run and a Bega to the Beach 30km Mountain Bike Ride.

We welcome all visitors to our area to come and join in the fun over this long weekend in January.

Saturday 26 January will kick off with the Coastlife Tathra Beach 2km Fun Run at 12.30pm. All members of the family can enter this run, which starts on the beach just north of the Tathra Beach Country Club and finishes in front of the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

Age categories from infants’ schoolaged children to over 40s!

For bike enthusiasts we have a 30km Bike Bash leaving Bega at 5pm and

riding over Dr George Mountain to Tathra through some of the most breathtaking bushland scenery the Sapphire Coast has to offer. The event finishes at the Tathra Surf Club with major random draw prizes to be won and refreshments.

The main event is held on Sunday 27 January from 7.00am. The Tathra Wharf to Waves Ocean events encompass a number of ocean swims: the 1200m Michael Marshman Architect’s ‘Splash for Cash’ open race (12+ yrs) and a series of 600m age races from the Historic Tathra Wharf.

Competitors swim around a course and finish on the beach in front of the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club. The first male and female in the 1200m ‘Splash

for Cash’ will receive $500 cash and a unique medallion made by local goldsmiths Martin and Dorte Planert and Goscia Jackson, a local artist, will present each with an original trophy.

A new event on the weekend calendar is the ‘FLIPPER THRASH’ beach swim – so there really is something for everyone.

There will be prizes for winners and major random draw prizes over the weekend, but you have to be in it to win it! Spectators are most welcome and there will be lots of food and refreshments available.

The finale to the weekend will be an evening of fun and dancing at the Surf Club on Sunday night where the talented Truck Brothers will be performing.

Lifesaving Club, and what a spectacle it is.

This year the Tathra Moonlight Cinema nights will be held at sunset on Friday 4th January and again on Friday 11th.

Movies are projected on to a giant inflatable screen. All you need to do is BYO chair, pillow and a blanket and sit back and enjoy the big screen under the stars.

Refreshments will be available, and entry is $10 adults, $5 children under 12 or $35 per family.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.

Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.

The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region.

Bega has seen its demographics change over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle.

Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

The new Sapphire Marketplace complex has opened after a 15 month construction phase, bringing nationally

recognised retail outlets to Bega.

Housing the largest Big W outside of Sydney, the complex represents a huge change to Bega's retail landscape.

Entertainment for all the family at Club Bega After undergoing significant renovations totalling $3 million, Club Bega is now one of the premier clubs in the Bega Valley. The refurbishment has created a club with modern, up-todate facilities with great amenities and a wonderful atmosphere.

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation.

Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source

ABC Cheese Factory The ABC Cheese Factory is located in the heart of historical Central Tilba and is the home of the famous Tilba Club Cheese. The ABC Cheese factory was established in 1891 and was the first Cheese Co-op in NSW. Today Tilba Club Cheese is still waxed by hand and is sold exclusively through the shop in 250 and 500 gram portions. All the traditional varieties of Tilba Club Cheese are sold as well as some that are only available here.

Cheese tastings are available at all times, as are tastings and sales of a large range of local South Coast honeys.

Narooma • Bodalla • Moruya Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet.

The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants.

Just up the road from Narooma is Bodalla, the village with the magnificent stone church and many other historic buildings. The village was developed by Thomas Mort in the late 1800s as a private country estate based around the dairy and cheese making industries, which still dominate Bodalla today.

All Saints Anglican Church was commissioned by the Mort family in memory of Thomas Mort and his wife.

Work began on the Church in 1880 and was completed in 1901.

Further north, the township of Moruya also has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore.

It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place.

These days however, Moruya is known

for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.

Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.

Narooma celebrates oysters in May Celebrity cook, author and former MasterChef winner Julie Goodwin is thrilled to be a part of this year’s Narooma Oyster Festival, held on 4 - 5th May. “I love Narooma and I love the Oyster Festival,” she said. “It has such a beautiful community feel and it’s always really exciting with terrific food, fantastic cooking demonstrations, beautiful art works and lots of wonderful people who also enjoy these things.”

Narooma Oyster Festival celebrates Wagonga Inlet oysters and those from neighbouring estuaries, local produce and the region’s culinary and artistic talents in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable.

The festival will have very different programs on each of the two days.

Saturday’s is a gourmet food festival on the shores of Wagonga Inlet. Highlights include cooking demonstrations by Julie and some of the coast’s finest chefs, the oyster bar serving freshly-shucked oysters with chilled whites, the popular Ultimate Oyster Experience where local growers host exclusive tastings of Sydney Rock oysters from different far south coast growing areas, gourmet food and craft stalls, boutique beer and wine sampling, great music, exhibitions by local artists, sand modeling and other family activities.

Sunday’s ‘Narooma on Show’ sees the Festival move around Narooma and environs to showcase the area’s considerable attractions.
