From The Editor Welcome to the July/August edition of the FSC iMag. I'm writing this in Mid-June, and the region is still recovering from the effects of an East Coast Low that really pounded the coast and inland ranges. It even set a new record for the largest recorded wave in NSW - a whopping 17.7m, easily beating the previous record of 14.9m. That's a mighty big wave! Some beaches are now a little narrower than what they were, but that doesn't make them less spectacular. Winter is a great time for outdoor pursuits, you just need to rug up if you're out and about early in the morning or late in the afternoon. During the day you can expect beautiful sunny days - you might only need to wear a t-shirt! Away from the coast you can expect some cracking frosts after a clear night. If you're outside before it warms up, find a frozen puddle - the kids will love the tinkling sound of breaking ice! It's also a great time to shop; there are fewer crowds, plenty of time to wander and you're sure to find a cafe with an open fire. Just because it's winter doesn't mean there's nothing happening. In the northern part of the region there's the Eurobodalla Orchid Winter Show in July, a Spring Show in Narooma at the end of August, as well as an Antiques and Collectibles Fair in Batemans Bay. The Tathra Enduro features a weekend of mountain bike racing, the Bega Regional Gallery plays host to the prestigious Shirley Hannan Portrait Awards, and there are two race meetings at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club's track at Kalaru. See our What's On feature on pages 22 and 23 for more information about these events and more.

Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whalewatching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Eden is a great base to explore the area south to the border, and is surrounded by National Parks and State Forests. The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Etched in Stone: the stories behind Eden’s War Memorial Between 2014-2018, nations around the world are commemorating the centenary of the First World War. Eden Killer Whale Museum’s exhibition Etched in Stone provides a local perspective on the stories behind the names of the First World War servicemen who are commemorated on Eden’s Cenotaph. With the First World War being fought on shores far from Australia, few families were able to visit grave sites or battle grounds. Local memorials provided a formal place for communities to grieve and remember those whose who would never come home. They also provided a place of commemoration where a grave was not possible, usually for the sad situation where soldiers were missing, presumed killed. While memorials honour the names of service personnel, space prevents individual stories being told. The Fallen have always been given a special place in history, but what of the men who returned home physically and

emotionally changed forever? Etched in Stone tries to understand the experience of some of Eden’s 122 First World War servicemen – the courageous and the deserters, the young and the old, the loss or survival of brothers, those who went on to serve in the Second World War and those who never made it out of Australia the first time around. Etched in Stone is on display at Eden Killer Whale Museum until 2 December 2018. Left: Ernest Ralston. Courtesy of Mrs D Hawthorne. A signaller with the 33rd Battalion, Ernie was recommended four times for gallant conduct and devotion to duty before being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service in France. After the war he served as Lighthouse Keeper at Green Cape Lighthouse.

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

10

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

What’s new at Panboola? Panboola just keeps getting better. If it’s been a while since your last trip it’s worth visiting the wetlands this winter to see our newest additions or perhaps to discover some hidden gems. Upon arrival at Panboola our stunning guardian eagle greets you. This magnificent sculpture, created by local sculptor Richard Moffatt, was made possible by contributions from generous community members and supporters. Grab one of our new brochures from the info booth. It highlights Panboola’s extensive walking and cycling tracks. Try strolling out to the Pambula River via the Corridor and Bubble circuit. This 2.6km walk leads to one of Panboola’s best kept secrets. The intrepid bird observer may see the elusive Southern Emuwren amongst the shrubs here. At Watson’s Waterhole our new bridge has just been completed. The Panboola office is also located here and serves as an alternative entry point to the wetlands, with sealed car parking,

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the

26

www.monthlyimag.com.au

case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre is a wonderful reproduction of the original butter factory that was situated on the site in the early 20th century and has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's. It provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. For those interested in the history of Bega, the Museum in the heart of the town houses a collection of photos, family histories, farm implements and machinery. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. There's a fantastic walking track that goes all the way from the sporting fields near the Bridge over to the Bega River. The track then follows the Old Racecourse.

Outstanding portraiture exhibition at Bega Regional Gallery One of Australia's most loved and richest portrait awards, the biennial Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award celebrates realistic portraiture in memory of its founder. Hannan, a gifted portraitist, well known in the Bega Valley as a staunch supporter and generous patron of the arts, funded the John Balmain National Award for Portraits and Figure Drawing from 1993 until she re-established it in her own name in 2002 with a substantially increased first prize of $15,000. A prerequisite for the award was that works selected to hang depict their subjects accurately without abstraction and demonstrate a sound skill and knowledge of drawing and painting technique. Before her death in 2005, Hannan doubled the prize purse to $30,000 and it was decided to discard the figure drawing component of the prize, concentrating on portraiture alone. Hannan's husband, Brian Settle, established the

Shirley Hannan Trust to perpetuate the Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award as a biennial, national portrait prize focusing on accurate depiction. In 2012, Hannan's son Peter, himself a talented photographer, paid further tribute to his mother's memory with a generous personal donation of an additional $20,000 bringing the prize purse for subsequent awards to $50,000. The Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award is on display at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery from 17th June - 20th August. Details at www.gallery.begavalley.nsw.gov.au

StunningTathra Things to See & Do Get up close to birds at On The Perch's walk-through aviaries Try mountain biking on the trails around Tathra Check out all the cafes and restaurants in town Enjoy a walk or bike ride from Tathra to the Bega River at Mogareeka VISITOR INFORMATION Tathra Beach Supermarket 1/65 Andy Poole Dr, Tathra www.tathratourism.com.au

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during the East Coast Low that hit the region in June, and it may still be closed to the public for some time. You can still enjoy the view from the car park adjacent

30

www.monthlyimag.com.au

to the Wharf though. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground. Both are located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.

New exhibits under construction at On The Perch It has been nine months since On the Perch opened and already they have become one of the ‘must see’ attractions of the Sapphire Coast. With nearly 60 species of birds on display, their exhibits are displayed as regional based habitats. Currently, they have four exhibits: Asia/Pacific, Inland Australia, African Savannah and the Kimberley region of WA. The Asia/Pacific and Inland Australia Exhibits are their two walk-in aviaries, so for budding photographers or those that just like to sit amongst the birds, these are a popular choice. Combine your visit with the Meet the Keeper talks

at 11am and 1pm. Their early success has given On the Perch a promising future and they are now expanding with two new exhibits currently under construction. These will showcase the birds of Temperate Australia and due to popular demand, a Farmyard Nursery. They hope to have these open to the public in the coming months. Their winter trading hours are 10am - 3pm Thursday to Sunday. They will be closing for their winter break between 15th - 31st August and will re-open at 10am on 1st September.

CharmingTilba Things to See & Do Go for a hike up Gulaga Mountain Try fishing at Mystery Bay Explore the fascinating shops Visit the historic ABC Cheese Factory Drop in to the Dromedary Hotel

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked in amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a 36

National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. A large section of the grounds have been developed over many years, with water features, spectacular mature trees and the Willow House overlooking the duck pond. It's a wonderful place to inspire and delight children, with many hidden features to find and plenty of space. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘oldfashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, jewellery, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. The annual Tilba Festival, held each Easter, is a wonderful expression of the laid-back Tilba vibe - it's a corporate sponsorship-free zone.

Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops

The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won the Cultural and Heritage Tourism award at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards four times, as well as winning the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award in 2011. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth

Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Not far from Mogo is the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens that features plants native to the Eurobodalla region.
