Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whalewatching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Eden is a great base to explore the area south to the border, and is surrounded by National Parks and State Forests. The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

New exhibition the Rag Tag Fleet exhibition opens at the The Rag Tag Fleet was a phrase penned by Ladislaw Reday, one of a group of Americans who came to Australia in 1942 as part of the Mission X team. With the Japanese defeating US forces in the Philippines, the next strategy was to drive Japanese forces out of New Guinea, and without an available fleet at hand, the Rag Tag Fleet was born. The Mission X team scoured Australia’s eastern seaboard and New Zealand inspecting and procuring an unlikely fleet of attack vessels for the US Army. Known as the US Small Ships Section, they included wooden trawlers, scows, sailing Right Knuckey Collection. Eden Killer Whale Museum Wooden fishing trawler, Zoie, was commandeered for the US Small Ships and survived being bombed in Oro Bay in New Guinea in 1942. Her owners, Bert Evans and Bill Priest, served on different vessels within the Small Ship Section.

Eden Killer Whale Museum craft and even a paddle-wheeler. While a fleet was beginning to be assembled, there was the realisation that crew were needed. Those fit enough were already engaged in the war, so it was left to the young, the old and those classed by the defence force as

medically unfit to take the helm. Charged with taking ammunition, supplies and troops through mostly unchartered waterways, these civilians faced enemy fire just the same as regular defence forces. However it is only within the last decade that their contribution to the American and Australian war effort has been officially recognised. Eden Killer Whale Museum’s latest exhibition The Rag Tag Fleet commemorates the 75th anniversary of the formation of this unusual fleet of ships, and remembers the men from the South Coast of NSW who served on them. The Rag Tag Fleet is on display at Eden Killer Whale Museum from 5th June 2017 – 4th February 2018. www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafés, restaurants, retailers, designers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

12

www.monthlyimag.com.au

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of goods every year.

Howard Hinton, an avid collector of art and visitor of artists' studios, developed his collection for the purpose of encouraging artists, educating students, and for the benefit and enjoyment of the public. The Collection reflects Hinton's early love for Victorian travel paintings as well as respect for the conventions of Australian landscape art. The Lindsay family is strongly represented as is Streeton, Roberts, Gruner, Hilder, Murch and Feint. With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during the East Coast Low that hit the region in last June, however the repairs have been completed allowing full access to the Wharf as well as the cafe.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground. Both are located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.

Celebrating the 75th anniversary of what must be one of the most unusual fleets to take to the water during World War 2, The Rag Tag Fleet is a fascinating exhibition exploring a little-known part of naval history. The US Navy, suffering defeats in the Phillipines, decided to focus on driving the Japanese out of New Guinea. The only problem was, they didn't have any ships or sailors available. The Mission X team was charged with scouring Australia's eastern seaboard and New Zealand for suitable

With sailors away at the war, the Rag Tag Fleet was crewed the young, the old and the 'medically unfit'. Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira River Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

30

www.monthlyimag.com.au

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village though; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has it's old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.

Take your time in Bangles Gallery For 43 years the Bangles belief has been quality, variety, affordable prices and great customer service. The current owner, Derwood, has been involved with Bangles Gallery for 33 years, which is quite an achievement. Located in a magnificent two-storey timber building in the centre of Cobargo, pottery is at the heart of Bangles Gallery. With a wood fire keeping the shop cosy and warm, Bangles is perfect to wander through on a chilly day....or in any kind of weather. A talented pool of craftspeople supply Bangles with a selection of traditional and modern Australian-made pottery, with a small amount sourced from overseas.

There's an extensive range of cookware that is both beautiful and functional, vases, pots, and elegant decorative pieces. Bangles is not just about pottery though. A more diverse range of products has been introduced, including glassware, ironware, leadlight lamps and beautifully crafted cutlery sets. Reflecting the Bangles philosophy, these pieces all represent great value for money without sacrificing quality. Browse through the well-stocked shop to find the perfect gift or something special for yourself. Bangles Gallery, Princes Highway, Cobargo. Phone 6493 6421

John Bell and Simon Tedeschi perform at Four Winds A tale of shipwreck, heartbreak and redemption comes to the Windsong Pavilion on Sunday 2nd July as part of Four Winds Artistic Director James Crabb's, Windsong Series. Founder of Bell Shakespeare, John Bell, and internationally acclaimed pianist, Simon Tedeschi - two of Australia’s great storytellers bring their unique performance of Enoch Arden to the Four Winds Windsong Pavilion. This epic melodrama, composed by Richard Strauss to the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s 1864 poem ‘Enoch Arden’, will be performed in words and music. According to Simon Tedeschi, 'Enoch Arden' Is "a tragic, tempestuous, romantic tale accompanied by the music of a genius. Half chamber music, half theatre." The historic and artistic value of pairing poetry with classical music is something that both performers are eager to share with audiences as they tour around Australia. "Audiences can expect a moving and dramatic tale of shipwreck, loss and redemption--- very satisfying theatre" says John Bell. John Bell is one of Australian theatre’s most illustrious figures, having played a role in the development of our nation’s rich artistic culture, as founder of Bell Shakespeare, an actor and director. Simon Tedeschi, is one of the most soughtafter pianists in Australia. After solo recitals and numerous awards throughout Europe, the USA and Asia, Tedeschi returned to Sydney in 2010. He has since performed as soloist for the Sydney and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras, Queensland Music Festival, Musica Viva and several concert series and major venues around the country. This rich, philosophical tale of love and loss, inspired by some of Strauss’s most intriguing music, will be performed in the Four Winds Windsong Pavilion, Four Winds Rd, Bermagui on Sunday 2 July at 12.30pm. Find more details at fourwinds.com.au/whats-on or by calling 6493 3414.

Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops

The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won the Cultural and Heritage Tourism award at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards four times, as well as winning the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award in 2011. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth

century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different. Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Not far from Mogo is the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens that features plants native to the Eurobodalla region. Stroll along the 6km of pathways observing a variety of birds and other native wildlife. Two tracks provided access to the Gardens for those with prams or limited mobility.

Julea in Mogo Located in a beautifully restored cottage, Julea Mogo is renowned for creating unique pieces on-site, made specifically for the individual. In their efforts to create the perfect tailormade piece, owners Bloss Theodore and Deb Gough get a sense of a client's personal style, and consult closely with them in the design process. Deb explains, "Jewellery is such a personal expression. We want our customers to be involved in the process." In practical terms, one day Bloss, together with jewellers Pip and Caity, could be creating or remodelling a family heirloom, the next a quirky, fun piece. Taking this approach means the team at Juela Mogo don't create their own signature collections, rather they have created an extensive range of one-off pieces. They do however, have a signature style and a growing reputation for quality in design, product and service. In fact, one of their customers was stopped in the street by someone who asked if she was wearing a 'Juela Mogo' ring. Julea Mogo also offer an exclusive range of jewellery by both Australian and international designers who share a similar philosophy. Bloss and Deb have big plans for Julea Mogo, with a plan to expand the studio and create a new workshop. They hope that this will allow them to keep on producing timeless pieces for their ever-expanding customer base. Julea Mogo www.juleamogo.com.au

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.

Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of places to try them.
