July Welcome to the July edition of the Far South Coast Monthly Imag. As I write, the rain is falling on the roof, and what a fabulous sound that is after a pretty dry autumn. Wet weather is a great excuse to stay indoors - long lunches at a restaurant you haven't tried before, extended catch-ups over coffee, enjoying art galleries or lots of retail therapy are all good options! And when the sun is shining, as it so magnificently does during the winter months, head outdoors and make the most of it. Bushwalking, kayaking, bike riding and long walks on the beach are all wonderful options for the great outdoors during the cooler months. Enjoying the spectacular coast roads this month are the participants in the biennial Bay to Bermi Run. Owners of classic and vintage motor cars will be heading south to Bermagui from Batemans Bay to raise funds for charity.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

‘Strike’ tells the tale of Eden's tuna fishing industry In 1949, Eden’s fishing industry faced economic ruin. The two main fishing species of barracouta and salmon failed to arrive along the coast, leaving local fishermen wondering what to do next. Tuna was the answer. Thousands of tons of tuna could be found close to shore during the annual migration to spawning grounds off Tasmania. Fishermen at Bermagui claimed there were so many that they ‘could walk from their boats to the shore on the fishes’ backs’. Up until then, there was no market for Australian caught tuna either in Australia or overseas. With the reduced catch of salmon and barracouta the fishermen turned to tuna as a means to make their way clear of the poor season. Mostly caught by trolling up to seven lines, around 300, 000 pounds (136 kg) of tuna was caught in the first four weeks. Most of the tuna weighed around 20 pounds (just under 10 kg). Further out to sea, Commonwealth fisheries officers located schools of

tuna weighing up to 50 pounds (22.6 kg). The season saw 1,000 tons of southern bluefin tuna landed at port and was mostly caught by fishermen using improvised equipment and learning the habits of the fish as they went. On 24 September 1950, the American owned tuna clipper Senibua (with its own spotting aircraft) arrived in Sydney and began to prepare for experimental pole fishing for tuna in Australian waters. On its first cruise in October in waters near Jervis Bay, Senibua poled 6 tons of southern bluefin in 40 minutes. The visit by the clipper was seen as an opportune time for Australian fishermen to learn tuna poling methods from experienced crews, assess tuna poling against purse seine netting, and explore the commercial viability of Australian tuna resources. Tuna poling involved the ‘chumming’ of waters, where either dead or live bait was thrown into the school of tuna to create a feeding frenzy. While tuna were actively feeding, fishermen stood in racks attached to the sides of the fishing vessel, and cast long lines with barbless feather lures or live bait. The fish strike the lure and once hooked, fishermen haul their long fishing poles overhead where the fish dislodge during the change in tension of the swinging action. The line and lure is then cast out again as quickly

as possible to maximise the catch numbers while the feeding frenzy is at its peak. If fish proved too large for a single pole fisherman, the pole configuration changed to double and triple polers which allowed two or three men to haul in a single fish. In the early 1960s, experiments began on mechanical poling machines. While they had benefits, vessels still required crews to resolve mechanical and fish release failures and stow the catch. A dangerous occupation, fishermen have been lost when hauled overboard by large tuna, and entire crews of vessels have vanished in poor weather conditions. This exhibition examines the evolution of methods and equipment associated with tuna pole fishing, and pays tribute to the fishermen who worked in the physically, financially and emotionally demanding industry of tuna poling. Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Australian Motor Museum cars at Adam's Prestige and Classic Motors It's amazing what you find tucked away in the most unassuming places. In a quiet Pambula street is Adam's Prestige and Classic Motors, a factory full of very collectable cars, where owner Adam Thomas happily opens his doors to the public for free. Adam's most recent purchase is a 1929 Rolls Royce and a 1953 Alvis (see below). These vehicles were recently acquired from a private owner who had them on display at the Australian Motor Museum for the past 12 months. Adam is best known locally for his Classic Car Gala Days, held at Merimbula Beach Holiday Park at

Short Point. To date, the Gala Days have raised over $17,500 for the Bega Oncology and Can Assist. Adam said 'It was a great experience to be the event organiser of the Classic Car shows, mainly because it allowed me to do something I love, while raising money for a great cause at the same time'. Adam is lucky enough to have owned a 1934 Triumph Gloria, one of only five of these cars in the world, which he exhibited at the 2011 International Concors d'Elegance) car show in Melbourne. McKells Picture Framing and Artessence Gallery - The Story So Far A long time ago, in fact in the 1860s, Pambula was relocated from the flood plains south of the highway to its present location. One of the early buildings in the new Pambula village was the butcher shop, built by the first butcher, John Behl at 47 Toalla Street. In the 1880s the shop was run by Robert McKell, father to William McKell, who went on to become Premier of NSW and later Governor General of Australia. Not bad for a butcher’s son from Pambula! Meanwhile, as time passed, the butcher’s shop was redeveloped into a private home, and after many years it

re-emerged as a commercial premises when it became McKells Restaurant in the 1970s and 80s. Many locals still remember its roaring log fire and generous Sunday Roasts. It later became a printing shop, but when the printers relocated a little further up the road, it was transformed into an Art Gallery and Picture Framing business. And so it has remained for the past decade, but now with new owners, Rob and Deb Evans, who moved in at Easter time this year. McKells Picture Framing and Artessence Gallery has undergone a few changes since then. The most

noticeable is a new roof, completed before any major winter rainfall could penetrate. Inside, the picture framing business is continuing, and as well as artworks from many local artists, the gallery now features beautiful photographs of the local area taken by Rob. He also does commission work for clients and offers a photo restoration service. The official “reopening” of McKells took place on the 23rd May, once the roofworks were completed. The opening was attended by many of the featured artists in the gallery, as well as friends and clients, to support Rob and Deb as McKells enters its next phase... So drop in and visit the gallery. She loves cuddles just as much, too, and one of her keepers will often have to spend a bit of time with her, after the talks are over, trying to coax her back onto her tree. “Mmm, yummy leaves,” rarely works, but (you know) they have to try. Sometimes she can be tricked onto a branch if the keeper can turn quickly enough. Failing all that, there’s always the radio call for ‘cuddle backup’ – another keeper

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Camping is available along the way or stay in comfort in the renovated Green Cape Lightkeepers Cottages. Park use fees apply.

Start this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, Allocasuarina paludosa, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale migrating south from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at

Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants.

Enjoy bushwalking in the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve From Tathra, head back toward Bega on the Snowy Mountains Highway, and turn right into Thompsons Drive. The car park on the right marks the start of the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve. This 60 hectare wildlife corridor provides habitat for a range of fauna species, including glossy black-

cockatoos, listed as a threatened species. These rare birds feed on the black sheoaks (Allocasuarina litoralis) found in coastal forests, and build nests in the hollows of old or dead trees. The Main Ridge Track passes through coastal rainforest down to a secluded wetland, with a variety of waterbirds,

frogs and water dragons. Continue through the Reserve until you reach Dilkerra Rd; follow this until you reach the famous Tathra beach, winner of the 2008 NSW Clean Beach Award. The walk takes about 45 minutes one way, and is graded as easy - medium.

In 1880 Canadian Henry Williams discovered alluvial gold in shingle on the beach seven kilometres north of Bermagui. The Montreal Gold Rush was on, and within 3 weeks, 2000 miners were on the field. Today the Montreal Goldfield is a virtually intact remnant of this gold rush of the early 1880s, and is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea. A section of the original goldfield has been preserved, but for safety reasons, you can only enter the Goldfield as part of a tour. This, however, provides a wonderful

Tilba Living History

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous Cheese Factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Moruya The township of Moruya also has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore. It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney

ABC's Costa returns to Southeast HARVEST Festival This year's Southeast HARVEST regional food festival, to be held on 27th July at Riverside Park, celebrates the winter harvest of the region. Last year was ABC Gardening Australia’s Costa Georgiadis’s first time to the event, and his enthusiasm on the day was boundless. Organisers have confirmed that Costa will be back this July to join in the celebration. “Last year, I got a real feel for the energy and enthusiasm of the people around here for local food. I'm excited to be coming back to share some of that again," said Costa. “ “Events like the Southeast HARVEST are a fantastic

opportunity for people to connect with what’s going on around them and learn more about how easily they can be part of supporting local farmers. Eat local, in season and build local resilience. Every two years the Classic & Vintage Motor Club of Eurobodalla (CVMCE) hold their charity fundraiser, The Bay to Bermagui Run. Saturday 13th July is the date for the Club's fifth Run, with funds raised going to the Snowyhydro SouthCare Helicopter Service. In 2011, a total of 109 classic and historic cars and motorcycles, built from the 1920s through to the 1980s, travelled from around the Shire and beyond to participate in the Run. Kayaking & canoeing in the land of many waters Eurobodalla, land of many waters, is kayaking heaven with four major river systems, 20 lakes, 83 beaches and many islands along 130 kilometres of Batemans Marine Park coastline. Thinking about kayaking around the Eurobodalla this autumn? Listed below are some great flatwater and sea kayaking routes, courtesy of Eurobodalla Coast Tourism's Kayaking & Canoeing brochure. Take a more detailed map if you’re paddling somewhere new and without a guide, or pick up the brochure from one of the Eurobodalla Tourist Information Centres. Here are some important safety tips to remember when you undertake any of the routes in this guide: Be Seen-Be Safe - Wear bright coloured clothing. Keep out of mooring areas (where other boats hide your presence). Water safety - Be aware of water safety rules and procedures with information from boating, marine or water sports organisations. Skills - Take a lesson if you need to. Instruction is available in Eurobodalla for all levels of kayaking skills. Safety Vests - Always wear a life vest or life jacket. Helmets - Recommended for surf and white-water kayaking and when paddling near rough water and rocks. Paddle with someone If possible and tell someone where you will be going and when you expect to return. Maps - Take a map with you if you are not familiar with the route. Be aware of local conditions - Including

currents, tides, water levels, shoreline variations and special hazards. Check the weather - Plus know about likely changes, such as offshore winds that may occur. Wind - Will slow down paddling and the extra effort required will tire you more quickly than normal. Also think about offshore winds – don’t get blown away from shore. Waves - Can be larger than expected and can change in size depending on water depth. Tides - Can be strong and having to paddle against the tide can make you tire quickly. Tidal flow against the wind direction will make waves steeper and water more choppy – plan your paddle according to tides. Surf - Check the conditions and stay away from swimmers. Emergency Contact.
