July Welcome to July and welcome to winter on the Far South Coast. Just because it's winter doesn't mean you need to stay indoors all day - it might be cold at night, but a good frost is nearly always followed by a beautiful clear, sunny day. The cooler day time temperatures are perfect for bushwalking or an invigorating stroll along the beach - much nicer than sweating it out in the middle of summer! It's also a great time to get out and explore the many towns and villages between the escarpment and the coast. Historic buildings, quirky shops, great galleries, fantastic cafes and restaurants without the busy summer crowds are all waiting to be explored. To learn more about the development of Eden, drop in to the Eden Killer Whale Museum this month. There's a fascinating exhibition about the life and achievements of JR Logan, the

man who brought electricity plus a whole lot more to the town in the 1920s and 1930s. Read more on page 6. Also this month, the Festival of the Face wraps up in Bega. This new event is centre around the Shirley Hannan Portrait Award, Australia's third richest portraiture prize. Follwing on from that is an exhibition of selected works from the Shirley Hannan Collection - a must see! Find out more on page 19. Coming up in August is the Fireside Festival, one of the Canberra region's most popular winter events. George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

J R Logan: Community & Nation exhibition at Killer Whale Museum When you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer

whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. Logan built the beautiful Edrom Lodge as his family's home on the shores of Twofold Bay, now a heritage listed property located near the multipurpose wharf. Taking three years to build and employing many locals, the construction of 'Edrom' as it was then known, was a boon to the Eden economy. Another local landmark that remains a symbol of Logan’s community

Davidson Gallery Whaling Exhibition Visit Old Tom’s Skeleton -the

spirit is the Log Cabin located in Bass Street. When he became aware that his daughter's girl guide brigade were desperate for a meeting place, Logan bought land and sourced information from overseas on designs of Canadian log cabins. He created a scale model of the cabin, secured building permission from the Girl Guide movement and oversaw the building of the cabin which was opened in 1936. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away at Edrom Lodge in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters, including Broadwater Oysters.

Discover local history at Merimbula's Old School Museum One of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the wonderful Old School Museum. A wonderful facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to immerse yourself in local history. Originally built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers, squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. The current exhibition at the Museum is a display of the story of the survivors of the wreck of the Sydney Cove in 1797. The ship was wrecked on Preservation Island, off Tasmania, while on her way from Calcutta to Sydney with a cargo of various provisions. Seventeen of the survivors set off in a

long-boat intending to get to Sydney, but they too were shipwrecked near what is now Lakes Entrance. Their only hope was to walk the 600 kms along the coast to Sydney. Only three men made it to the cove at Wattamolla, where they were rescued by a fishing boat which took them the rest of the way to Sydney. The display incorporates the story of the Scouts' re-enactment of the journey in 1997. This was part of the Museum's National Trust Heritage Festival event. Other permanent displays of local history include stories of: • Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and lost it by investing in the Pambula goldfields; • the Wharf and the Illawarra Steam ship Company that provided transport for people and goods up and down the coast before roads were built;

• Syms Covington, who travelled with Charles Darwin in the Beagle and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant; • gold and pyrophyllite mining around Pambula; • the wrecking of the William Dawes and the SS Merimbula; • mutiny and murder on an American whaling ship, and many more. The Museum is situated in Main Street (opposite the RSL) and is open from 1.30pm – 4pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (closed Christmas Day). Entry is only $3 and children are welcome at no cost. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage

Centre is a must; housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. It provides a fascinating insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts major exhibitions throughout the year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. Every second year the Regional Gallery hosts the Shirley Hannan Portrait Award, one of Australia’s richest portrait prizes. Proudly sponsored by the Shirley Hannan Trust, the Award is a celebration of realistic portraiture that attracts artists from across Australia. You can see this years exhibition and award winners at

Cobargo The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, General Store, school, Hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese making industries. If you're at Tathra Beach you might see dolphins or even whales; they head south on their migration between September and November. Visit Australia's only seaside Goldfield A tour of the Montreal goldfield near Bermagui is a unique experience for all ages. The tour includes a walk through the beautiful Australian bush on boardwalks and pathways where you can look down old mining shafts in safety and gain a special insight into the days of mining long ago. Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilbaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilbaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main street. Narooma Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet. Tucked between the coastal ranges and the ocean, Narooma is the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. There are several charter boats to take you out to Montague Island, as well as fishing charter operators if you're into game fishing. If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore.

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Start this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, Allocasuarina paludosa, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

Moruya Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the BrinjaYuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks, and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in

The first bridge across the Moruya River was erected in 1876, although frequent flooding meant new bridges had to be erected in 1900 and 1945 and, most recently, in 1966. World War 11 must have seemed a long way from Moruya to begin with, but as the war progressed, it had a direct impact on the town. The Moruya aerodrome became an advanced operational base, and in 1942 a trawler was attacked by the Japanese offshore between Moruya and Batemans Bay. On 25 December 1944 the US liberty ship SS Robert J. Walker was torpedoed off Moruya by the German submarine U-862. It sank the next day between Moruya and Bega, with 2 people dying and 67 survivors. These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden

poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.

March - 22nd Feb 2015 - JR Logan - Community & Nation, Eden Killer Whale Museum A fascinating exhibition that delves into the life of J R Logan, one of Eden's great champions. He established the town's first electricity plant a century ago, and is considered by some as the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme. He also ensured that the skeleton of Old Tom, a popular feature at the Eden Killer Whale Museum today, was preserved, and secured a permanent home for it.
