July Welcome to July and welcome to winter on the Far South Coast. There are lots of things to do these school holidays - there's a list on page 14 to work your way through. Just because it's winter doesn't mean you need to stay indoors all day - it might be cold at night, but a good frost is nearly always followed by a beautiful clear, sunny day. The cooler day time temperatures are perfect for bushwalking or an invigorating stroll along the beach - much nicer than sweating it out in the middle of summer! It's also a great time to get out and explore the many towns and villages between the escarpment and the coast. Historic buildings, quirky shops, great galleries, fantastic cafes and restaurants without the busy summer

crowds are all waiting to be explored. To learn more about the development of Eden, drop in to the Eden Killer Whale Museum this month. There's a fascinating exhibition about the life and achievements of JR Logan, the man who brought electricity plus a whole lot more to the town in the 1920s and 1930s. Read more on page 6. With some of the frosts we've been having, you can almost imagine you're in Scotland. At the Merimbula RSL on 11th July you'll hear traditional Scottish pipe and drum music, and it will sound like Scotland too. Our What's On feature on page 3 details more events happening this month on the coast. Have a great time this July whatever you decide to do!

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

2

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

from overseas on designs of Canadian log cabins. He created a scale model of the cabin, secured building permission from the Girl Guide movement and oversaw the building of the cabin which was opened in 1936. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away at Edrom Lodge in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. The exhibition is on show until 18th October - details at www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

When you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. Logan built the beautiful Edrom Lodge as his family's home on the shores of Twofold Bay, now a heritage listed property located near the multi-purpose wharf. Taking three years to build and employing many locals, the construction of 'Edrom' as it was then known, was a boon to the Eden economy. Another local landmark that remains a symbol of Logan’s community spirit is the Log Cabin located in Bass Street. When he became aware that his daughter's girl guide brigade were desperate for a meeting place, Logan bought land and sourced information

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage

of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an oldfashioned milkbar.

Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue.

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during January as well as the annual Jazz Festival in June. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Merimbula Marina – Something for Everyone! No visit to Merimbula is complete without seeing our spectacular coastline from the ocean! Whether it is Reef or Game Fishing or a Whale Watching or Dolphin Cruise we have a cruise to suit everyone. Merimbula Marina is a family owned business and we work hard to ensure that your time with us is a pleasant one. If you are a keen angler then this month we have several options for you. Our Reef Fishing Charters are popular with both our 4hr & 5hr Reef Charters departing early morning – you know the saying “the early bird catches the worm! Or in our case the fish!!” The water is still fairly warm and so too is the fishing with snapper, morwong and flathead on the bite. We should also start to see a few kingfish coming on this month. If you have never fished before or have younger children then our 3hr Family

Fishing Charter is perfect for you. Our staff will give you demonstrations and tuition and are available throughout the charter to assist you. These charters depart late morning. All fish are cleaned and bagged for you to take home. Check out our fishing and dolphin cruise reports which are posted to our Facebook page each afternoon www. facebook.com/Merimbulamarina If fishing is not for you then why not try one of our 2 hour Bay Dolphin Cruises. This scenic cruise takes you past brilliant red and yellow sandstone cliffs, yellow beaches and spectacular coastline. We regularly sight Common & Bottlenosed Dolphins; Australian Fur Seals; Sea Turtles; Penguins and a wide variety of seabirds. There is also the chance of whale sightings as the humpbacks travel on their northern migration.

If you are not the ocean going type, then hire one of our Self Drive Hire Boats and explore the Merimbula Channel & Lake. Pack a picnic or your fishing rods and make a day of it. You don’t need a boating licence and we will give you operating instructions. Make sure you have your NSW Recreational Fishing License with you – these can be purchased online - www. licence.nsw.gov.au We have rods available for hire and bait and tackle kits for purchase. To book your charter come and see us at the end of the Public Jetty in Market Street, Merimbula. Or phone (02) 6495 1686 www.merimbulamarina.com

Bega

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting some millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage

Centre is a must for anyone new to the region; the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region. Bega is undergoing something of a building boom, with the new Bega Hospital complex due for completion in 2016, and the upgrade of the Town Hall almost completed. The Sapphire Marketplace was finished almost 2 years ago, and it houses one of the largest Big W outlets in southern NSW. Bega also has great specialty shops, with clothing, furnishings and jewellery from around the globe, bulk wholefoods, bookshops, music shops, cafes featuring local produce and more.

The Great War: Tales from the Far South Coast at the Bega Pioneers Museum Heroes come in many shapes and forms, and when it comes to World War One we often think of the soldiers who fought so bravely for King and country. However, did you know that just over 2,000 women served in World War One as members of the Australian Army Nursing Service? Pearl Elizabeth Corkhill from Central Tilba was one of those women. Sister Corkhill enlisted as a staff nurse in June 1915 soon after she had finished her general nurses’ training in Sydney. She nursed in Cairo, France and England and was one of only seven Australian

nurses to be awarded the Military Medal. The Military Medal was an award for gallantry and devotion to duty when under fire in battle on land. Sister Corkhill received this award in 1918 while nursing at the 38th British Casualty Clearing Station close to the front line, for calmly working throughout a heavy German air raid without any regard for her own safety. Stories like Corkhill’s are part of The Great War: Tales from the Far South Coast exhibition showing at the Bega Pioneers’ Museum. This significant exhibition commemorates the centenary of World War One by telling local stories of courage, resilience and commitment using well-designed arrangements of stories, objects and images. The exhibition puts the catastrophic events of World War One into a regional context, and is relevant to people from all over the south east region. A feature of the exhibition is a digital display available for viewing on television screens. The display, A Camera on Gallipoli, shows candid photographs taken by Sir Charles Ryan while he was serving with the AIF during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. His photographs are unique and capture the harsh reality of our soldiers’ experiences. Sir Charles Ryan served as a doctor with the Turkish army in 1877–78. He treated Ned Kelly at Glenrowan, was a leading Melbourne surgeon and gave long service as a senior military

officer. He was extended high civil and military recognition by his peers. In 1914, at the age of 61, Sir Charles Ryan was appointed consulting surgeon to the AIF. He embarked from Melbourne in October 1914 for the Middle East and then on to Gallipoli. You can view The Great War: Tales from the Far South Coast exhibition at the Bega Pioneers’ Museum. The museum is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10am - 4pm, and Saturdays 10am - 2pm. The Exhibition has been made possible with funding from the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program and the Bega Valley Shire Council, and is sponsored by local businesses and organisations. Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. There's also the famous Tathra Pub, with fantastic ocean views.

Launch a boat at Kianinny or Mogareeka, located at opposite ends of Tathra Try mountain biking through the forests around town Walk, cycle, skate, run or blade from Tathra to Mogareeka. Enjoy a round of golf or a game of tennis at the Tathra Beach Country Club

Cobargo© Paul Callaghan

Cobargo The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. During the 1870s Cobargo had its own Post Office, General Store, school, Hotel, church and blacksmith, all supporting the local butter and

Bangles Gallery A comprehensive range of all Australian made pottery Princes Hwy Cobargo 6493 6421

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au cheese making industries. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production. Today, Cobargo is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. Cobargo combines the skills and craft of a working village with a genuinely historic past, its streetscape featuring many turn of the century buildings. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features beautiful wrought iron lace work around the verandahs. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the fantastic Laneway markets. Browse fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts,

craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There's also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker. West of Cobargo is the spectacular Wadbilliga National Park that contains the Brogo Wilderness Area. This wild area is a refuge for native flora and fauna, and is a great place for walking.

Want to solve a mystery in your holidays, take a walk back in time? Then the Montreal Goldfield at Bermagui is the place to go. The story of this unsolved “Bermagui Mystery”, and life on the goldfield, is told on a guided tour that leaves from the Goldfield Heritage Centre at 2pm each day. This virtually intact 1880s alluvial goldfield is being preserved as a community project to conserve the past for future generations. Boardwalks and pathways meander through beautiful tree ferns and eucalypts, between deep mine shafts which have

been fenced off or covered over for safety. The goldfield tour is a great experience for visitors of all ages and for a couple of hours enjoyment, reliving the atmosphere of the gold rush, is just the place to be. The site is beside the Wallaga Lake Caravan park, 7 km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. Entry is by guided tour only. Tours take about an hour and are exceptional value at $7.50pp, $25 family or $5pp concession. For further information contact Bermagui Visitor Information Centre on 6493 3054.

Tilba Living History

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Central Tilba Farm Cabins Ever wondered what happens on a real working farm? Central Tilba Farm Cabins offers you the opportunity to find out. The cabins are located at ‘Braeside’, an historic 350 acre Tilba property at the foot of spectacular Mt. Dromedary (Gulaga Mountain) with lots of beautiful bush. There are 4 fully self-contained cabins, each one separated from the others to ensure privacy. Cabins have a main bedroom with a queen sized bed and a connecting shower and toilet, and an open–plan kitchen/living/dining room with a television and twin bunks for the kids (bring your own linen). An open fireplace, well-stocked with split wood, guarantees cosy evenings

for the whole family. The cabins are a 3 minute drive to Central Tilba, and only 5 minutes to the beach, and are a perfect base for exploring all the fabulous sites of the local area. Talk to hosts Ron and Tralee, and you might even be able to bring your pet with you! Cabins cost from $60 per night in the off season to $100 per night during the Christmas holidays for the whole family. The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. Head north to Durras Lake for a spot of fishing, bushwalk in the Murramarang National Park or say hello to the kangaroos at Pebbly Beach.

GREAT

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.
