From The Editor Welcome to the March/April edition of the FSC iMag. As always, this time of year is really busy, with Easter and school holidays in NSW, Victoria and the A.C.T. March is Festival Month... and there's a lot of them! The 10th Sculpture On The Edge kicks things off, running from March 5th - 14th. The main event features large sculptures scattered around the headlands of Bermagui, but there's also a Symposium, Community Picnic, Fire Festival and more. The details are on page 44. The Bermagui Seaside Fair is a real community event that brings together people doing all sorts of things, like a street parade, great music and cultural programs, Umbrellas of Bermagui, free kids novelty events, a sandcastle competition, pet parade, fireworks - and there's still more! Find out more on page 44. Four Winds Festival is held every second year at Easter, and this year the program is as exceptional as ever. The outdoor Sound Shell amphitheatre is the setting for performances by international, Australian and local musicians and dancers. You'll find more information on page 46. The Tilba Festival is on Easter Saturday and is an action-packed day with 4 stages of live music, stalls, great food, street theatre and old-fashioned games like gumboot-tossing, cheese-rolling and egg throwing. It's pretty unique - read more on page 51.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whalewatching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Eden is a great base to explore the area south to the border, and is surrounded by National Parks and State Forests. The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Etched in Stone: the stories behind Eden’s War Memorial Between 2014 - 2018, nations around the world are commemorating the centenary of the First World War. Eden Killer Whale Museum’s exhibition Etched in Stone provides a local perspective on the stories behind the names of the First World War servicemen who are commemorated on Eden’s Cenotaph. With the First World War being fought on shores far from Australia, few families were able to visit grave sites or battle grounds. Local memorials provided a formal place for communities to grieve and remember those whose who would never come home. They also provided a place of commemoration where a grave was not possible, usually for the sad situation where soldiers were missing, presumed killed. As early as October 1915, Australians began
establishing memorials commemorating those serving (or lost) overseas in the First World War. Coinciding with the first anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, fundraising for New South Wales’ state memorial began in 1916, although it was not officially opened until 1934. In the Bega Valley Shire, memorial fundraising committees started to form in the
Above: Unveiled at the Shire Council Chambers in 1922, Eden’s First World War memorial took the form of simple marble honour rolls. Memorial services were conducted here until the first official service was held at the new Cenotaph in 1967.
Above: Bill Stafford & sons William, Lot & Bob. Courtesy of Mr & Mrs R Stafford. Local brickmaker, Bill Stafford, gave his age as 45 years old but was actually 58 when he enlisted. Bill served in France until he was wounded in action and his true age was discovered while in hospital. William and Lot both served overseas with the Light Horse Regiment, with Lot going on to serve with the Volunteer Defence Force in WWII.

early 1920s. The second in the Shire, Eden’s First World War memorial was officially unveiled in 1922. This was in the form of two simple marble honour rolls that were erected either side of the Council Chambers in Eden, which were later removed and incorporated into a new Cenotaph built in 1966. Located on Calle Calle Street, the Cenotaph was built to include the names of local World War Two service personnel and today includes the names of personnel who have served in other theatres of war since. While memorials honour the names of service personnel, space prevents individual stories being told. The Fallen have always been given a special place in history, but what of the men who returned home physically and emotionally changed forever? Etched in Stone tries to understand the experience of some of Eden’s 122 First World War servicemen – the courageous and the deserters, the young and the old, the loss or survival of brothers, those who went on to serve in the Second World War and those who never made it out of Australia
the first time around. Etched in Stone is on display at Eden Killer Whale Museum until 2 December 2018.

A signaller with the 33rd Battalion, Ernie was recommended four times for gallant conduct and devotion to duty before being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service in France. After the war he served as Lighthouse Keeper at Green Cape Lighthouse.

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake
The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

www.monthlyimag.com.au
Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.
Wild Rye's Open in Cann River and Pambula Well-known throughout the Bega Valley and beyond, Wild Rye's Baking Co. has expanded its operations, with new premises in Cann River. With many of its devoted Victorian customers looking for high quality food when travelling to the Far South Coast, Cann River was the logical solution for a Wild Rye's take-away, offering the same high standard products, but with fast service and easy parking on the Highway. Local Cann River residents (and those from outlying areas) are already converted to the high standard of Wild Rye's products, with a loyal band of regulars already appearing daily. Food is prepared every day in the kitchens of the Pambula shop, using local produce where possible, and then driven down to Cann River in a special refrigerated vehicle. Wild Rye's have created a range of simple, fresh sandwiches, toasties and paninis, perfect for a quick bite to eat when travelling. Wild Rye's famous pies are also available at
Cann River, with favourites like the traditional Aussie meat pie made from locally grown chunky beef through to seafood mornay and lamb Rogan Josh. For the vegetarians, choose from blue cheese, spinach and cauliflower or lentil and wild mushroom. The all-important take-away coffee is a crucial part of the Cann River operation. Wild Rye's roaster Erin roasts all their coffee on-site in Pambula using a German Probat Coffee Roaster. Wild Rye's source in-season speciality beans direct from the farm, as to ensure the product is grown sustainably and the farmer and their workers are fairly compensated. Also available are a selection of cakes (including gluten-free) and pastries, and of course Wild Rye's range of breads, made by hand using traditional methods. Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the
region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Welcome Jimmy to Potoroo Palace! Jimmy is Potoroo Palace’s most recent and long awaited for arrival. He is a young male koala who has come to provide companionship to our own very precious koala, Sapphire, who was born at Potoroo Palace nearly 5 years ago. Jimmy was close to dying from starvation when he was rescued in the wild, and was in care for quite some time whilst good health was restored to him. With assistance from National Parks, he now has a new safe and loving home. Sapphire and Jimmy were introduced to each other very gradually at first and slowly, allowing them to see one another from a safe distance and to get used to each other’s scent. After a while it seemed a good idea to let
them meet properly. They were watched very closely when their internal enclosure doors were opened so they could visit one another. It was so exciting for staff to see Sapphire meet another koala after such a long time. Although they both live in different enclosures within one larger enclosure, they can still see and smell each other and it is a delight to know they have some companionship now. Why not come along to see them this Easter and see if you can get some wonderful pictures to enter in Potoroo Palace’s fundraising Photographic Competition. More details about this can be found on our website - just look under Events. www.potoroopalace.com

Owners Gavin and Lisa Rikken love nothing better than to share their experience fishing the waters off Merimbula. Headland Fishing's charter boat Jadele 11 carries 12 passengers and 2 crew, and personal attention is guaranteed. All you need to bring is food, drink and a hat. Jadele 11 also has an on-board toilet. Fishing licences, gear and bait are also supplied, and all caught fish will be cleaned for you. If you're keen to try Reef fishing, you'll be catching species such as snapper, flathead and deep sea bream, all great to eat. Reef charters run from 6.30am to 12.30pm. With Deep Sea Fishing, you'll be looking to catch species such as trumpeter, ling, morwong, snapper or shark. If Game Fishing is more your thing, you might find yourself
hooking either a black, blue or striped marlin, yellow fin tuna or albacore. King fishing is also available. These charters run from 7am - 3pm. If you're not into fishing, try a Sapphire Coast Scenic Coastal Cruise. You'll enjoy the magical blue waters of the coast, see dolphins, seals, birds and other sea life and visit the spot where the Empire Gladstone sank at Haycock Point. VISITOR INFORMATION At Bega Cheese Heritage Centre, Lagoon Street, Bega Ph: 02 6491 7645
In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today. The Bega Cheese Co-op is one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting over 60 millions units of cheese to more than 40 countries around the world. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen

from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground. Both are located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.

Intriguing Cobargo
Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town.
A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production. The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of the buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs.

Australia's only goldfield that goes into the sea A guided tour through the Montreal Goldfield near Bermagui is a unique experience for all ages and should not be missed. The goldfield is an intact example of alluvial diggings in the 1880s and the only goldfield in Australia that goes into the sea. Today, trained guides tell you the story of the
Montreal goldfield and the Great Unsolved Bermagui Mystery as you wander along pathways and boardwalks through the beautiful natural bush that covers the diggings today. All shafts are fenced off or covered so you can look down them in safety. It is so peaceful now; a far cry from the chaotic days of the gold rush era. Entry is by guided tour only. Tours leave at 2pm daily from the Heritage Centre, Wallaga Lake Rd. 7 km north of Bermagui, and take just over an hour. Group bookings available for a guided tour at any time. For instance, large numbers of seals are staying at Montague Island over the summer months, making it a perfect place for snorkelling or diving. Australian Fur Seals are very friendly towards those exploring their underwater world, and love to play all around you as they demonstrate just what poetry in motion really means. It's also expected to be a great Kingfish season, with fish starting to bite early; good catches of reef fish have also been made this year. You
can see them on an evening tour between September and January. Narooma Charters run fishing trips both morning and afternoon, and you can expect to make some remarkable catches. Tours to Montague Island are a must for visitors and locals alike. The penguins are a great sight as they arrive on the island at dusk each evening; you'll see them on the evening Penguin tour. Picturesque Moruya Things to See & Do Stroll or ride your bike through Moruya's Riverside Park Take a drive alongside the beautiful Moruya River Head south and visit Bodalla's historic All Saints Church VISITOR INFORMATION Moruya Library, Vulcan St Moruya 44741333 Open Monday to Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday 9:30am - 12pm
Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the Brinja-Yuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge

pylons, 173,000 blocks and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in Hyde Park. These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer. Moruya Heads is about 10 km to the east of the town. Moruya Heads Beach is home of the local sur life saving club, so it's a great place to swim safely with the family. Congo and Bingi are located south of Moruya and also feature beautiful unspoilt beaches. If you're keen to go bush, then head to the Deua National Park, the largest park in the South East region. There are plenty of great tracks to hike on, including one from the Berlang campground to the gaping chasm of The Big Hole. Further along the same track is the ancient rock feature of Marble Arch, where stalactites hang from ancient elevated ceilings.
Dreams come true at Moruya’s ‘To Di For’ The owner of ‘To Di For Designer Accessories’, Moya Finch, has always had a love of fashion and decorating. She once told her husband, “I’m going to work in that boutique one day,” never dreaming she would end up owning it. Dreams really do come true. Moya loves anything unique and unusual and this is reflected in the range of clothing, bags, accessories and homewares that To Di For carries. There are fantastic labels including Salt, 7 Sisters, Boo Radley and Marilyn Seyb, just to mention a few. Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops
The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won the Cultural and Heritage Tourism award at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards four times, as well as winning the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award in 2011. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth

century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different. Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. The Zoo also has the largest collection of primates in any private Zoo in Australia. Not far from Mogo is the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens that features plants native to the Eurobodalla region. Stroll along the 6km of pathways observing a variety of birds and other native wildlife. Two tracks provided access to the Gardens for those with prams or limited mobility. With features including display gardens, a sensory garden, herbarium, nursery, arboretum, picnic, playground and barbeque areas, there are plenty of opportunities for children to burn off some energy. Entry to the Botanic Gardens is free, and every Sunday morning at 11am there are free guided walks with a trained volunteer guide.

Step back in time at The Original Gold Rush Colony The Original Gold Rush Colony at Mogo is located in a 4.5ha natural bush setting and is a great place to step back in time, reliving Australia’s Pioneering Era. Guided tours run four times each day, and you can pan for real Gold, see the working rock crusher and explore the mine tunnel. The Original Gold Rush Colony has taken out the award in Heritage and Cultural Tourism at the South Coast Tourism awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and the Heritage and Cultural Tourism Hall of Fame in 2013. At the 2015 awards the Gold Rush Colony won Gold in the Budget Accommodation section and Silver in the Heritage and Culture category. Within the Gold Rush Colony is the fantastic Mogo Maze, which is suitable for all ages and has proven very popular since it opened. Younger children can see other people moving through the gaps in the palisade
timber fencing. They can also reach the raised platform in the centre and look out over the top of the maze to the outside world. The Mogo Maze has a Eureka theme, and has the Eureka flag hanging on the sailing mast at the entrance, and above, the magnificent mural painted by talented staff member Trevor Hyde. Guests can choose to run the maze on its own or take up the challenge of the Eureka Theme Crossword Puzzle. Questions are scattered throughout the maze, with cryptic clues to help solve the answers . Guests can return their crosswords to reception to collect a prize. The maze can be ticketed separately to the Gold Rush Colony. Within the park, you can take a tour, pan for gold, or play mini-golf. Overnight guests receive free entry into the Gold Rush Theme Park. Details at www.goldrushcolony.com.au

Breathtaking Batemans Bay Things to See & Do Explore the Clyde River by boat, houseboat or kayak Taste some fresh oysters at the Oyster Shed Drop in to Indoor Karting and test your driving skills Visit the many National Parks in the region, from hinterland forests to coastal gems VISITOR INFORMATION Princes Hwy, Batemans Bay Ph: 1800 802 528 info@eurobodalla.com.au
Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans
Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Clyde River Oysters at the Oyster Shed There’s something about being on or near the water that lends peace and tranquillity to the spirit, and Batemans Bay is blessed to have such easy access to the beautiful Clyde River, running right through the township. If you’re down around the water’s edge, make sure you drop in to see Enola at The Oyster Shed, the last shed on Wray St, located on the northwestern bank of the Clyde River. Enola sells fresh Sydney rock oysters and pacific oysters grown “organically” from her own leases, in one of the cleanest rivers in New South Wales. The Oyster Shed’s oysters have an excellent flavour, and are a highly nutritious food, being
rich in omega 3 oils, iron, zinc, iodine, vitamins A, B complex, & C. These days, you can be much more adventurous in the kitchen with oysters than just serving the old standards of oysters kilpatrick or mornay. Just ask Enola - she’s got lots of recipes for a more contemporary approach. The Oyster Shed is also a great spot for a picnic. All you need is the picnic rug, a bottle of wine and some freshly-opened oysters, then relax and enjoy the spectacular Clyde River views. And to keep the holiday vibe going, take some oysters home with you! www.oystershed.com.au
