March is the height of festival season on the coast, with no less than six events on this month! First cab off the rank is Sculpture on the Edge at Bermagui from March 2nd, featuring spectacular sculptures in spectacular locations; you'll find details on page 21. Merimbula's Rock n Rodders Dance Festival is on again for those who long for the 50s and 60s - check the What's On listing on page 31. The Bermagui Seaside Fair is on Saturday March 9th, and it has a program that's as long as your arm truly! See pages 19 and 20 for details. At EAT Merimbula on Sunday 10th you'll find the best of local produce as Fishpen transforms into a locavore's paradise - more info on page 10.
Contents The Tilba Easter Festival is on Saturday 30th March, and it's one not to be missed. With four music stages, street performers, street games like the bushies boot throw, egg toss and the cheese roll (yep - cheese rolling - only in Tilba!), the Tilba Festival is one big party to which you're all invited. More information is on page 22. Finally, Magic Mountain's Easter Family Fair Day is on Sunday March 31st. It's a fun-filled day for all the family with entertainment, Easter Egg hunts and a visit from the Easter Bunny. See page 11 for details. George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

In 1949, Eden’s fishing industry faced economic ruin. The two main fishing species of barracouta and salmon failed to arrive along the coast, leaving local fishermen wondering what to do next. Tuna was the answer. Fishermen at Bermagui claimed there were so many that they ‘could walk from their boats to the shore on the fishes’ backs’. Mostly caught by trolling up to seven lines, around 300, 000 pounds (136 kg) of tuna was caught in the first four weeks. Most of the tuna weighed around 20 pounds (just under 10 kg). Further out to sea, Commonwealth fisheries officers located schools of tuna weighing up to 50 pounds (22.6 kg). On 24 September 1950, the American owned tuna clipper Senibua (with its own spotting aircraft) began to prepare for experimental pole fishing for tuna in Australian waters. On its first cruise in waters near Jervis Bay, Senibua poled 6 tons of southern bluefin in 40 minutes. The visit by the clipper was seen as an opportune time for Australian fishermen to learn tuna poling methods from experienced crews and explore the commercial viability of Australian tuna resources. Tuna poling involved the ‘chumming’ of waters, where either dead or live bait was thrown into the school of tuna to create a feeding frenzy. While tuna were actively feeding, fishermen stood in racks attached to the sides of the fishing

vessel, and cast long lines with barbless feather lures or live bait. The fish strike the lure and once hooked, fishermen haul their long fishing poles overhead where the fish dislodge during the change in tension of the swinging action. The line and lure is then cast out again as quickly as possible to maximise the catch numbers while the feeding frenzy is at its peak. If fish proved too large for a single pole fisherman, the pole configuration changed to double and triple polers which allowed two or three men to haul in a single fish.

While they had benefits, vessels still required crews to resolve mechanical and fish release failures and stow the catch. A dangerous occupation, fishermen have been lost when hauled overboard by large tuna and entire crews of vessels have vanished in poor weather. This exhibition examines the evolution of methods and equipment associated with tuna pole fishing, and pays tribute to the fishermen who worked in the physically, financially and emotionally demanding industry of tuna poling. Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent
swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Double up at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club this March Haven't been to the races for a while? Or are you a dedicated punter who wouldn't miss a race meeting for quids? This March you can enjoy two days of great racing at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club, located on a picturesque 300 acre site on Sapphire Coast Drive at Kalaru, between Merimbula, Bega and Tathra. First out of the barrier is the Merimbula Cup, held on Friday 8th March. Sapphire Coast Turf Club is one of the newest and most modern country racecourses in NSW with great spectator facilities. Jockeys and trainers come from all over south eastern NSW and East Gippsland to compete in the Club's nine race season. Patrons can enjoy an unobstructed view of the action from most parts of the course, including the Members Reserve and Function Centre and from the large, banked lawn areas. Built in 1862, the wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other

walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. On the 27th - 28th April, Tathra will be taken over by mountain bike enthusiasts competing in the third annual Tathra MTB Enduro. With everything from races for the kids to the 100km race, the MTB Enduro is a real family and community event.

Bermagui Seaside Fair - B there for the fun of it! Saturday 9th March is the date for the 16th Bermagui Seaside Fair and the theme is “B for Beautiful Bermagui”. Dress as your favourite character or colour starting with the letter “B” – there’s prizes for the best outfits. The program’s major highlight this year is Questacon. The National Science & Technology Centre from Canberra is bringing their show to the Fair and will present their “Making Science Fun!” hands on exhibits and live shows on Dickinson Oval. There’s all the favourites – street parade, pet pageant and carnival. The Citizen and Junior Citizen of the Year will be announced. Over 100 market stalls will meander through areas both on and off the oval. Don’t miss the auction which will start at 12.30pm on the main stage on Dickinson Oval. There are some very special items available this year, including a framed and signed 2012 Melbourne Storm jersey and a day or night Sydney Bridge Climb. The Poet’s Breakfast starts at 8am with
Wallaga Lake/Bermagui Men’s Shed cooking up a storm from 7.30am. There’s live entertainment on two stages and buskers along the main street. Zamboni will wow young and old and there will be kids novelty events on the netball courts. See Tai Chi, gymnastics, drumming and Zumba demonstrations. A sandcastle competition starts on Horseshoe Bay beach at 12.30pm. And the Hole in One Beach Bash, also on Horseshoe Bay Beach, tees off at 2pm. The arts and crafts and photographic exhibitions are under one roof at the Surf Club from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th March. The Country Club will again host the model boat expo on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th March. At the Fishermen's Wharf the Bermagui Blessing commences at 8am. Eden’s Water Police launch “Falcon” will be open to the public and NSW Police, Marine Rescue and Fisheries will have displays and activities. There’s a chalk art competition and buskers will entertain. “Art in Place” themed art exhibition will
be held upstairs from 2nd to 9th March. Special guest Kimmi Saker, popular presenter from East Coast Radio 2EC, will be dressed up, assisting with presentations, judging and cocompering many of the events. The popular Variety Concert will be held a week after the Fair at the Country Club on Sunday 17th March to start Senior’s Week off with a bang. Note the date, prepare your outfit, and B there for the fun of it! The Bermagui Seaside Fair is an alcohol free event. The Montreal Goldfield is a Heritage Site 7km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. It is a virtually intact remnant of the gold rush days of the early 1880s, and is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea. The goldfield is a beautiful place, and it's hard to imagine it was once bare ground with every blade of grass and shrub removed, every tree cut down and heaps of dirt and holes, making it look like a tortured moonscape. But nature looks after itself: today the trees are enormous, the ferns are fabulous and the wildflowers in spring
are beautiful to see. A tour through the Montreal Goldfield is a special experience, and is just the place to go for a couple of hours enjoyment. Tours of the Goldfield are held daily at 2pm and take around 1 ¼ hours, and toilet facilities are available. If you have a group of more than 12, contact the Bermagui Visitors Centre 6493 3054 and choose a time that suits you. Admission is $5pp. When visiting the Bermagui Seaside Fair, take a tour of the Goldfield at 2.00pm before you venture home.
Sculpture on the Edge set to impress 2013 sees the seventh annual Sculpture on the Edge at Bermagui, featuring large sculptural pieces on the spectacular Endeavour Point Headland, on Horseshoe Bay Beach and in Dickinson Park. Small sculptures will be exhibited in the Bermagui Community Centre. Sculpture on the Edge attracts both established and emerging artists, and is visited by about 7,000 enthusiasts. This free event makes sculpture accessible to a wide audience, and it has had its share of controversies, making it all the more interesting. Running from Saturday March 2nd until Monday 11th, the event features prizes including the Cox $5000 Acquisitive Prize and an ANU residency. A public Symposium titled "Good Dog! Animals in Sculpture" is on Sunday March 3rd at Phillip Cox's Murrah property Thubbul. Tickets are $35 and registration forms are available from the website - see below. On the evening of the 10th, there will be a community Picnic a amongst the Sculptures, when the People's Choice awards will be announced. With previous exhibitors having participated in Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney, Cottesloe and Denmark, Bermagui's Sculpture on the Edge brings outstanding works to a local audience. Easter Saturday 30th March 2013 9am to 5pm The Tilba Easter Festival is an amazing day of entertainment and frivolity for the whole family. This year will be the 29th annual festival to be held in the main street of the historic town of Central Tilba. Easter Saturday, the 30th March from 9 am until 5 pm is the time to visit! The Tilba Easter Festival bans the car for a day while families of locals and visitors alike, fill Bate Street from end to end. Buskers, vibrant street stalls, clowns and musicians ensure that young and old are guaranteed to be entertained throughout the day. There is something new to see or do every 10 metres along the street. Entertainment in the form of the ever popular Reptile Awareness show, kids fun rides, a local art show and live music fill four stages. The street games provide an insight into the fun of yesteryear, when games of skill and team work kept the kids amused rather than today’s techno screen time. The bushies boot throw, the egg toss and the cheese roll are open to all comers and are always a great laugh. Street events this year include wandering minstrels and magic shows. Local blacksmiths provide an insight into their craft with demonstrations. Machine enthusiasts can observe historic stationary engines in action and the Cancer Research Advocate Bikers (CRABS) will bring their roaring Harleys. The list of musicians includes local singer songwriter Brigid Murane, the world music tunes of Malumba, Irish style tunes from Full Circle and the harmonious voices of the Deep River Choir. Tilba Living History
Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous Cheese Factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Narooma • Bodalla • Moruya Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a patrolled beach, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. Just up the road from Narooma is Bodalla, the village with the magnificent stone church and many other historic buildings. The village was developed by Thomas Mort in the late 1800s as a private country estate based around the dairy and cheese making industries, which still dominate Bodalla today. All Saints Anglican Church was commissioned by the Mort family in memory of Thomas Mort and his wife. Work began on the Church in 1880 and was completed in 1901. Further north, the township of Moruya also has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore. It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place. These days however, Moruya is known
for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.
