March Welcome to autumn on the Far South Coast - as I write this in early February, we're recovering from a mini heat wave, so things are starting to dry out. Here on the NSW Far South Coast it's the beginning of festival season, which means there's plenty of things to do. Sculpture on the Edge in Bermagui is a highlight of the afore-mentioned coastal events calendar, with amazing sculptures dotted around the Horseshoe Bay headland. Like Bondi's Sculpture by the Sea, the spectacular setting makes a great backdrop for spectacular sculptures. Check page 20 for details. Also in Bermagui this month is the fabulous Bermagui Seaside Fair, and this year's theme is "Out of this World", which should make for some interesting floats in the Street Parade. There's an incredible list of events happening before, during and after the

Fair - have a look on pages 18 and 19. Merimbula is hosting the 5th Rock 'n' Rodders Dance Festival also on the 7th to 9th March. This event celebrates the sub-culture that emerged following the birth of rock 'n' roll that's still going strong. You'll find more info on page 10. If you're keen to go racing, the Sapphire Coast Turf Club has two race meetings on this March - see page 13 for details. Merimbula EAT is back again too - you can enjoy locally-produced plated food at this foodie providore event on the foreshore of Merimbula Lake. You'll find more details on page 11. George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

Wreck, Rescue & Salvage - Highlights of the Dick Jolly Collection photographs, records and diaries, which he drew on when publishing his autobiography Wreck, Rescue & Salvage. Captain Jolly was a great supporter and active member of the Eden Killer Whale Museum, helping to establish the library collection in 1993. His name is recorded on the foundation stone of the Museum’s eastern wing extension which recognises the efforts of dedicated committee members. Captain Jolly completed a cadet apprenticeship with the Australian National Line and later served in the British Navy’s tug fleet in Malta. He then joined a British deep-sea towing company, where he was involved in towing, dredging and floating docks to all parts of the world. He served as captain for over 100 projects, and in 1981 was master of the Salviscount, the biggest tug in the world at that time. He undertook one of the world’s longest tows, which saw a dredger towed 13,000 km in 105 days from New Zealand to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Captain Jolly began his salvage career when he joined Selco in Singapore, travelling all over the world to manage fires, collisions, strandings and sinking vessels. His significant experience later saw him called as an expert witness in a wide variety of marine court cases. On his return home after the refloat of EDE

In late 2013, the Eden Killer Whale Museum acquired the vast personal library of the late Captain Richard (Dick) Jolly (1940-2009). Wreck, Rescue & Salvage, on display until the end of March, reveals Captain Jolly’s personal and professional interest in all things maritime. Captain Jolly was well known in Eden and internationally as a salvage master. He was one of only 40 people in the world appointed to a panel of salvage experts approved to represent all parties and their insurance companies. During his career he managed over 80 salvage jobs, ranging from fishing boats, passenger cruise ships and oil tankers. His last major salvage project was the successful refloating and towing of the infamous MV Pasha Bulker, which ran aground during a major storm in Newcastle in 2007. Captain Jolly’s keen interest in maritime history, along with his occupation as salvage and tug master, is reflected in his books, postcards and cigarette cards, salvage scrap books, photographs, navigation charts and log books. The collection complements the local salvage reports and photographs already held in the museum’s collection; significant for the detail they provide about practices, vessels and crews associated with Eden’s fishing industry. He was meticulous in documenting his projects, keeping

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp and several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters here, including Broadwater Oysters.

At the southern end of Pambula is the project known as Panboola, extending from the edge of town to the Pambula River. Panboola, the Aboriginal name for the area, covers 77 hectares and is comprised of land that was previously privately owned, as well as sections of the Old Pambula Race course. It is a diverse estuarine and freshwater wetland comprising billabongs, saline areas, a tidal channel, mud flats, mangroves and saltmarsh. The wetlands provide a final filter for the town's storm water and floodplain runoff before entering the Pambula Lake, and at times are dry. They provide important breeding and nursery areas for a large range of animals including birds, fish and invertebrates. By protecting and restoring habitat for native wildlife, the whole area is being rehabilitated as a wetland for the purpose of nature conservation. Planted corridors have been established (and protected by fencing) to link existing plantings at the front (north) of the site to the Pambula River in the south. A series of walking tracks takes visitors through a range of vegetation types, including saltmarsh, billabongs and the Pambula River. Areas of farmland are still used for

grazing, with the income generated assisting with recurring costs. Panboola offers many recreational options, including bird-watching, picnicking, cycling, walking or just sitting and enjoying the view. Picnic tables and seats have been installed in Tips Billabong and the Waterbird Sanctuary making outdoor lunches easy, or just bring a picnic blanket. Shade, shelter and seating are also available in the re-vamped Kiosk, located beside the former race course in the south east section. Panboola is a favourite spot with locals for walking their dogs, but please note that dogs must be kept on a leash, and are restricted to roads; they are not permitted to enter through any gates. The main entrance to Panboola is off Bullara St, next to Robert Smith. Just down from the entrance over the arched bridge is an information booth that has brochures providing information about Panboola. Panboola is a wonderful place to experience nature, history and culture, and it doesn’t cost a cent.

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. The Chantoozies are headed to Merimbula, playing at Club Sapphire on Friday March 14th. The Chantoozies began touring Australia in the late 80s, appearing on every imaginable entertainment programme in the country. Originally formed only for a one-off show, they have since gone on to sell over 300,000 records, going Platinum and Gold. The Chantoozies toured Australia extensively with their first and second albums, achieving great success with their original material like ‘Wanna Be Up’, ‘Kiss And Tell’, ‘Walk On’ and covers of ‘Witch Queen’, ‘He’s Gonna Step On You’, ‘Love The One Your With’ and ‘I’ll Be There’; all top 20 hits. Enjoy two days at the Races at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club This March the Sapphire Coast Turf Club has two great days of racing planned. Bermagui Seaside Fair: “Out of this World” The 17th annual Bermagui Seaside Fair is on Saturday 8th March, and this year's fun theme is "Out of This World", because, as the locals know, Bermagui's natural beauty really is out of this world. Everyone attending the Fair is invited to dress in theme and participate in the street parade. There are prizes to be won in four different categories. “Umbrellas of Bermagui” is a new event for 2014; 15 local businesses purchased 3m shade umbrellas which have been hand decorated by well known and accomplished artists from across the region and as far away as WA. “Umbrellas of Bermagui” was launched on Australia Day by television personality

Catriona Rowntree, and the quality and subject diversity of the 12 completed umbrellas on display was amazing. The umbrellas will be auctioned at the Fair to raise funds for the local skatepark. Tony Jaggers, local R&B and rock musician, will also be performing on the Essential Energy stage. Sculpture on the Edge - creative, inspiring, and in Bermagui Bermagui's famous Sculpture on the Edge runs this year from 1st - 10th March, and, as always, promises to delight and intrigue participants. The official Opening is on 1st March, and on Sunday March 2nd the annual Symposium, "Sculpture Songlines" will be held at the Murrah Hall. Speakers will be Wendy Teakel from ANU, Hannah Quinlivan, Haeli Van Veen and Michael Purdy, all of whom will also be exhibiting. The ever-popular Community Picnic and Fire Festival is being held on March 9th, when the People's Choice and Children's Choice Awards will be announced. Fantastic fire sculptures

created by local school children school will also be on display. Braidwood Central School students will be exhibiting some of their exceptional metal sculptures which have wowed Jindabyne, Sydney and Canberra. In 2014 the Bega Valley Shire Council is offering a $10,000 Acquisitive Prize for the first time, plus there are other prizes ranging in value from $250 to the Cox Acquisitive Prize of $5,000 (go to www.sculpturebermagui.org.au for a list of prizes and previous winners). Acclaimed Street Artist, Phibs will be participating, creating art works on two structures which will be exhibited with the large sculptures on Endeavour

Point Headland. 2014 will also see the return of Amanda Stuart's "Mongrel Country", this time in bronze with a red dog leading the pack. The original "Mongrel Country" was a huge hit when it was exhibited in Bermagui in 2009 - it then went on to Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney and Aarhus in Denmark. Sculpture On The Edge will also see Ben Eyles' magnificent sculpture of a white rhino "Don't Forget About Me!", a poignant comment on the fate of this endangered species. Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores, and the famous Cheese Factory, all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Narooma Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet. Moruya Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the BrinjaYuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks, and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in

The first bridge across the Moruya River was erected in 1876, although frequent flooding meant new bridges had to be erected in 1900 and 1945 and, most recently, in 1966. World War 11 must have seemed a long way from Moruya to begin with, but as the war progressed, it had a direct impact on the town. The Moruya aerodrome became an advanced operational base, and in 1942 a trawler was attacked by the Japanese offshore between Moruya and Batemans Bay. On 25 December 1944 the US liberty ship SS Robert J. Walker was torpedoed off Moruya by the German submarine U-862. It sank the next day between Moruya and Bega, with 2 people dying and 67 survivors. These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden

poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.
