March Autumn has officially arrived, and after a particularly mild summer, things are looking very green and lush. If you want to slow down, you've come to the right place. The Far South Coast is the perfect place to chill out, whether it's spending time on the beach with a book, contemplating art or hanging out doing fun stuff with the family. If you're looking for something a little more action packed, you're in the right place at the right time. This March there's festivals, exhibitions, sport and more to enjoy. Music book-ends March, with the 20th Cobargo Folk Festival celebrating its 20th anniversary on 27th February 1st March, and the fantastic Candelo Village Festival winding up the month on March 28th.

Also on at the beginning and end of the month is racing at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club at Kalaru. March 6th sees the running of the Merimbula Cup, followed by Restaurants Race Day on Monday 30th. Read more on page 10. Sculpture on the Edge, now in its ninth year, is on during the first week of March. Large sculptural pieces are scattered throughout the magnificent settings of Endeavour Point Headland, Dickinson Park, and Horseshoe Bay beach. Details are on page 22. The Bermagui Seaside Fair is on March 14th, and with a huge program of events planned, you'll need a rest by the time you've checked everything out! See pages 21 and 22 for more information about the Fair. Enjoy March, and drive carefully.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

2

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

from overseas on designs of Canadian log cabins. He created a scale model of the cabin, secured building permission from the Girl Guide movement and oversaw the building of the cabin which was opened in 1936. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away at Edrom Lodge in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. The exhibition is on show until 18th October - details at www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

When you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. Logan built the beautiful Edrom Lodge as his family's home on the shores of Twofold Bay, now a heritage listed property located near the multi-purpose wharf. Taking three years to build and employing many locals, the construction of 'Edrom' as it was then known, was a boon to the Eden economy. Another local landmark that remains a symbol of Logan’s community spirit is the Log Cabin located in Bass Street. When he became aware that his daughter's girl guide brigade were desperate for a meeting place, Logan bought land and sourced information

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage

of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an oldfashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts

of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during January as well as the annual Jazz Festival in June. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Candelo Village Festival celebrates music, arts and local culture Candelo Village Festival on 28th March is a day to celebrate music, arts and local culture in the heart of the Bega Valley. Of course the main focus is the music as that's what Candelo is renowned for, and what an awesome line up it is. Have your dancing shoes polished and ready to go to the free festival opening at The Candelo Town Hall on the evening of Friday 27th March with a dance spectacular. Focussing on dances from different countries, the evening culminates in a Bush Dance with Kameruka Orchestra, hosted by Mike Martin. This will definitely be a fun night to kick off the celebrations. After a good night's sleep, you'll be ready to indulge in the events that make this festival one to remember above all others. Here's a sample... A legend, Frank Yamma is without a doubt one of Australia’s most significant Indigenous songwriters, with an ability to cross cultural and musical boundaries – a love song sung in Pitjantjatjara will make your heart sing in whatever language you speak. When he sings, you listen and travel with him. Hailing from Alberta, Canada's prairie balladeer Scott Cook is a tirelessly travelling DIY songwriter with heart forever on sleeve. Road-worn, painfully honest, and deeply human, his straighttalking tunes weave together folk, roots, blues, soul and country with spacious

fingerstyle guitar and clawhammer banjo arrangements. Get those dancing shoes out again for Azadoota who will make you smile, dance and grove to dynamic Cuban, Latin, Iraqi and pop-rock melodies and beats. Charismatic Iraqi front man Robin Zirwanda sings in his native Assyrian Neo-Aramaic and is joined by musicians and dancers all in Assyrian dress. Queen Porter Stomp will be bringing their quirky brand of swing to Candelo. This exciting Sydney six-piece are reviving the Roaring 20s with their thrilling swing music. They play authentic New Orleans Jazz and distinctive gypsy originals that create

an atmosphere reminiscent of a bygone era. As well as the music, there's market stalls to browse, enjoy a coffee at the local cafes, or try a beer at either of our two licensed establishments. Check out the rest of the line up and other good things on our website at www.candelovillagefestival.org

Discover local history at Merimbula's Old School Museum One of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the wonderful Old School Museum. A fantastic facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to spend some time. Originally built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers,

squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. It provides a secure site for displays of local history such as stories of: • Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and lost it by investing in the Pambula goldfields; • the Wharf and the Illawarra Steam ship Company that provided transport for people and goods up and down the coast before roads were built; • Syms Covington, who travelled with

Charles Darwin in the Beagle and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant. The Museum is situated in Main Street (opposite the RSL) and is open from 1.30pm – 4.00pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Entry is only $3 and children are welcome at no cost. Cobargo • Bermagui The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, General Store, school, Hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese making industries. Today, Cobargo is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. of a working village with a genuinely historic past, its streetscape featuring many turn of the century buildings. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the fantastic Laneway markets. Browse fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There's also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker. Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkeling, boating and canoeing. Throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River, or head out on one of the local charter boats. Don't miss a swim in the beautiful Blue Pool, set on the edge of the ocean at the base of the cliffs off Scenic Drive. Go bush walking in nearby National Parks and State Forests, or bird

Umbrellas, Pirates and Chainsaws! There’s a jam packed program at the 18th Bermagui Seaside Fair on Saturday 14th March. The theme this year is “Pirate Pageant” and the street parade participants will be dressed in all manner of pirate stuff hoping to win great prizes in five different categories. A major feature of the Fair is Umbrellas of Bermagui, now in its second year. 20 local businesses have sponsored a large shade umbrella each of which has been hand decorated by well-known artists. The magnificent umbrellas will be auctioned at 12.45pm, with funds raised this year donated to Bermagui preschools.

Timber master Charlie McVeity presents a chainsaw demonstration at 2pm. Watch the chips fly and wood dust pile up as experts display their chainsaw skills. Headlining on the main stage, exceptionally talented and wellrecognised Sarah Cowan and her band Sacred Cow will engage you with clever, thought provoking original songs. Tony Jaggers will also entertain you with his great rock, blues and classic music. The cultural program includes the Art in Place themed art show at the Fishermen’s Wharf, Photographic and Arts & Crafts exhibitions at the

Surf Club and the Model Expo at the Bermagui Country Club. Questacon returns “making science fun”. The Combined Anglican Schools Band will wow you, as will Tilba Tappers, the Ukelele Group, Bermagui Public School gymnasts and drummers and Oops! the Clown. There’s the Bermagui Blessing, free kids novelty events, Poets Breakfast, pet pageant, Zumba, sandcastle competition, golf hole in one beach bash, over 100 market stalls and a fireworks spectacular in the evening. How much more fun could you ask for! More info and entry forms at bermaguiseasidefair.com

Sculpture on the Edge informs, delights and inspires in 2014? Jimmy Rix, soon to exhibit at Sculpture by the Sea in Cottesloe, will be bringing some of his wonderful work, large and small, and Michael Purdy, known as the "Sandstone Magician" has a quirky metal take on Ned Kelly, as well as showing a stone bowl featuring celtic symbols. Sculpture on the Edge is also privileged to have a piece of the amazing May Barrie's work in the exhibition. It has been kindly made available by her daughter Tori de Mestre. Bega Regional Gallery will be taking "Unseen Sculptures" tours on the headland on both weekends of Sculpture on the Edge. These are virtual sculptures visible by phone app. Children's workshops are planned

during the event and ceramic sculptor Joy Georgeson will lead one at Little Yuin aboriginal pre school. The much loved annual Symposium on Sunday March 1 will morph into an exciting trio of presentations by John Blay from the Bundian Way Gallery and Eden Koori artists Darren Mongta and Lee Cruse at 10am in the Bermagui Library. The Community Picnic and Fire Festival with fire sculptures by Yuri Wiedenhofer and Chris Polglase will take place on Sunday March 8th amongst the sculptures on the headland. Definitely not to be missed. Find more information at Sculpture on the Edge's website at www.sculpturebermagui.org.au/

EDGE

Bermagui's very popular Sculpture on the Edge, now in its ninth year, will run from 28 February to 9 March. The opening is on Saturday 28th February at 6pm at the Bermagui Community Centre, also the location of the small sculptures exhibition. Large sculptures will be on show on Endeavour Point Headland, in Dickinson Park and on Horseshoe Bay Beach with local, regional and other visiting artists well represented. A great local favourite, sculptor Richard Moffatt, will be making a particularly welcome return with his "Is there a Dog?" which is a comment on dyslexia. Also returning are Senden Blackwood from Canberra and Ben Eyles from Jindabyne - remember his white rhino

The Easter highlight on Eurobodalla’s Nature Coast is the Tilba Easter Festival, held this year on Saturday 4th April. A unique festival, with entertainment and activities to suit all tastes, including Town Criers, hilarious street games with prizes, live music on 4 different stages, roaming street performers, Producers hall showcasing local produce, market stalls & delicious food and a fabulous parade. This all happens in the magical setting of Central Tilba’s main street with its 100 year old, colourful weatherboard buildings. The entire village, and surrounding lush volcanic farmland rolling down to the ocean, have been protected by the National Trust. Beautiful Mt Dromedary or “Gulaga the Mother Mountain", towers up 800 metres behind the village, and is widely known for its pristine rain forests and aboriginal sacred sites. Easter Saturday is the one day each year when Bate Street is closed to traffic and open to a huge array of culture and festivities. A modest

Tilba Living History

Tilba Easter Festival donation ($10 adults, Free Entry for kids 2-16) covers all the entertainment, all day long! The festival is proud to be a volunteer non-profit community project, completely free of corporate sponsorship, and dedicated to a day of fun for everyone who attends. There will be stilt walkers, buskers, street theatre and a continuous reptile awareness show. There will be Jumping castles, airbrush tattoos & face painting. Wagonga Inlet, Narooma © Paul Callaghan

Narooma • Moruya Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet, and it's also the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean. Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National

Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards. Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.
