Gastronomic delights at Narooma Oyster Festival MASTERCHEF Julie Goodwin will join a stellar line-up of professional chefs for a celebration of south coast produce, culture and artisans at the Narooma Oyster Festival this May. An ideal combination of fresh and tidal water flows means the four million Sydney Rock Oysters sold each year out of this scenic NSW town are of exceptional quality - the inspiration for a weekend of feasting and fun on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May. Julie will be helping some wannabe junior Masterchefs create spectacular dishes in front of the crowds in the main marquee and signing copies of her Heart of the Home cookbook. Cooking demonstrations will feature chefs from the finest restaurants on the south coast - including ‘Rick Stein at Bannisters’ head chef Julian Lloyd. Giant floating sculptures will stir the

tranquil waters of the Wagonga Inlet and the strongest music line-up ever seen at the festival will headed by blues/soul legend Eugene Hideaway Bridges. Boutique beer and wine sampling and refreshments from a raft of waterside food and wine stalls will be on hand to provide sustenance, while a vast oyster bar will be serving freshly-shucked oysters alongside a selection of chilled whites. But while the food and drink may be abundant and beautiful, the festival is not solely about satisfying one’s stomach. It also gives focus to the south coast’s Aboriginal culture with an opening Welcome to Country by the region’s traditional owners, performances by didgeridoo virtuoso Noel Butler and the Bidinga art and craft exhibition -

one of the finest displays of Aboriginal work in the region. With live music, a giant aquarium, sporting challenges, complimentary tastings, art and photography shows and a big selection of children’s amusements, the Saturday line-up is busy and impressive. Sunday is a different affair in 2012, with events moving from Riverside Drive to throughout the town as Narooma opens its doors to showcase its considerable charms - including a bike ride along the ridiculously beautiful Narooma-Dalmeny Cycleway and two-for-one rounds on one of the top public golf courses in Australia. May Welcome to May on the coast, and what a beautiful time autumn is. At the time of writing on Easter Monday, Brown Mountain is open again, after being closed for major repair work for two months. After Easter however only one lane will be open to allow final work to be completed, so do take care and allow for delays. The big event happening this month is the Narooma Oyster Festival on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May. Four million Sydney Rock Oysters are sold each year from Narooma and this provides the inspiration for a weekend of feasting and fun. Once again, MASTERCHEF Julie Goodwin joins a stellar line-up of professional chefs for a celebration of south coast produce, culture and artisans.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

The inaugural Towamba Acoustic Sessions are on Saturday 19 May. This free event features informal “workshops” held mostly around campfires, offering musicians and spoken word performers an opportunity to share their art, tricks and experiences in a family friendly bush setting. Food stalls, a bar and market stalls will operate all day and there is plenty to keep the kids amused. On Saturday night there will be a blackboard concert in the Hall. Camping and showers are available for $10 for the weekend. A soup kitchen opens on Friday night for early birds and breakfast is available on Sunday morning. More info on Facebook

Wrecks, reefs and the Mermaid shows maritime archaeologists at work on two rewarding expeditions off the Queensland coast two years ago. In partnership with the Silentworld Foundation, Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) divers found the remains of HM Colonial Schooner Mermaid on the Great Barrier Reef in January 2009 and investigated other wreck sites on Wreck Reefs in the Coral Sea in December. This ANMM travelling exhibition, titled Wrecks, reef and the Mermaid, includes stunning underwater photographs and a short video, all by Xanthe Rivett

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

The 26th annual Malibu Surf event, held on Saturday 19th May, will be known for 2012 as The Carrall-Mal, in honour of Phil Carrall, who founded the event in 1987. Sponsored by Bushrat Surfboards, the Carrall-Mal is a one day Malibu surf spectacular, with surfers surfing through a virtual gauntlet to reach the finals and great honours. It is a rare event when a fantastic commercial kitchen and restaurant are built in any small country town and that is precisely what Ainsley and Peter White have done over the last few months. As proprietors of the Wyndham general store, they became aware of the need for good food that tasted great in the local area, and so created the Wyndham Wagtail. They are joined by Chef Cindy, who is talented, humorous and more than happy to provide you with a great meal. Her menus are imaginative and wholesome. Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years Ello's Cafe Ello's Cafe has something that possibly no other business on the Far South Coast has - a train carriage. The carriage, C3151, as the plate on its side states, has been a feature of the building since 1998, when the business was known as Wattleton Junction. C3151 began life in 1926 and was one of the first steel electric carriages put into service on the Sydney electric train circuit. Manufactured under licence from the Leeds Forge Company in Great Britain, the carriage was one of 150 used in Sydney. These single decker railway carriages were affectionately known as 'red rattlers' because of their distinctive Indian red colour and the sash windows which became very noisy over time. Things haven't always gone well for C3151. In 1952 it was involved in a serious accident when the carriage was rear-ended whilst stationary at Berala Station. Being the last carriage on the train, C3151 took the brunt of the impact, telescoping into the carriage in front of it. 10 people were killed and more than 80 people were injured. It took two years for the carriage to be rebuilt, and it continued on active duty until it retired in 1992 to the south coast. Life since then has been very sedate, with C3151 playing host to Ello's customers, who enjoy all day breakfasts, light meals and great coffee in a very unusual setting. There's also an outdoor eating area for those who prefer to avoid potentially haunted train carriages. Ello's Cafe is open 7 days a week from 7am to 5pm

Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. The village of Tilba Tilba, just two

kilometers down the road from Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Monthly Garden Advice Citrus â&#x20AC;&#x201C; now here's a juicy story This particular story on Citrus is for those of us that live along the coastal zone from Victoria to Queensland. Many of you who read this publication and are holidaying from cooler parts can take all the cultural notes with you but leave your plantings until Spring. Citrus are not out of place in any garden whether a large property with space for larger varieties or smaller properties where a dwarf form in a pot or garden is more appropriate. A greater percentage of varieties now come in both dwarf and taller growing varieties, and the only reason to pick between the two groups is space availability. Varieties in both categories produce the same size and flavoured fruit, but quantity varies relative to the size of the eventual tree. Trees supplied through a retail nursery will have both the variety and the rootstock variety mentioned on the label. For those of us in temperate to cool growing areas, a Trifoliata rootstock is preferable, as this gives the plant a greater tolerance to frost and drought. Citrus grows best in a north facing aspect, away from cool southerly winds and, if you are prone to frosts, either select a variety that is more tolerant of frost or select a site that is frost protected. Always select a healthy vigorous younger plant from a reputable nursery and ask for advice on the correct planting technique.

This involves digging a wide and not too deep hole with good drainage. Incorporate a planting compost with the soil you have dug out and plant the tree, making sure that the graft union is well clear of ground level. Do not cut back any of the top growth as these plants will have been pot grown in a nursery and do not need pruning, unlike bare rooted fruit trees. If you intend to grow one of the dwarf varieties in a pot, select a large pot that can support the tree for a number of years and use a premium potting mix with added nutrient and water storage crystals. Citrus are very heavy feeders and have a high nitrogen requirement that should be applied evenly under the drip line several times in Spring and Autumn and once in Summer. Do not feed in Winter.

Ask you local nurseryman to show you the best fertiliser for this task. Citrus have fewer pest problems than a lot of other fruit trees but problems can occur when the tree is actively growing in Spring and Autumn. Watch out for insect pest like Citrus leaf miner, fruit fly, scale and sap sucking shield bugs. There are several fungal diseases that can affect citrus, so again, check with your nursery for identification and control methods. Check out your local nursery now as many will have just received their Autumn supply of fresh young trees.
