George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

‘Strike’ tells the tale of Eden's tuna fishing industry In 1949, Eden’s fishing industry faced economic ruin. The two main fishing species of barracouta and salmon failed to arrive along the coast, leaving local fishermen wondering what to do next. Tuna was the answer. Thousands of tons of tuna could be found close to shore during the annual migration to spawning grounds off Tasmania. Fishermen at Bermagui claimed there were so many that they ‘could walk from their boats to the shore on the fishes’ backs’. Up until then, there was no market for Australian caught tuna either in Australia or overseas. With the reduced catch of salmon and barracouta the fishermen turned to tuna as a means to make their way clear of the poor season. Mostly caught by trolling up to seven lines, around 300, 000 pounds (136 kg) of tuna was caught in the first four weeks. Most of the tuna weighed around 20 pounds (just under 10 kg). Further out to sea, Commonwealth fisheries officers located schools of

tuna weighing up to 50 pounds (22.6 kg). The season saw 1,000 tons of southern bluefin tuna landed at port and was mostly caught by fishermen using improvised equipment and learning the habits of the fish as they went. On 24 September 1950, the American owned tuna clipper Senibua (with its own spotting aircraft) arrived in Sydney and began to prepare for experimental pole fishing for tuna in Australian waters. On its first cruise in October in waters near Jervis Bay, Senibua poled 6 tons of southern bluefin in 40 minutes. The visit by the clipper was seen as an opportune time for Australian fishermen to learn tuna poling methods from experienced crews, assess tuna poling against purse seine netting, and explore the commercial viability of Australian tuna resources. Tuna poling involved the ‘chumming’ of waters, where either dead or live bait was thrown into the school of tuna to create a feeding frenzy. While tuna were actively feeding, fishermen stood in racks attached to the sides of the fishing vessel, and cast long lines with barbless feather lures or live bait. The fish strike the lure and once hooked, fishermen haul their long fishing poles overhead where the fish dislodge during the change in tension of the swinging action. The line and lure is then cast out again as quickly

as possible to maximise the catch numbers while the feeding frenzy is at its peak. If fish proved too large for a single pole fisherman, the pole configuration changed to double and triple polers which allowed two or three men to haul in a single fish. In the early 1960s, experiments began on mechanical poling machines. While they had benefits, vessels still required crews to resolve mechanical and fish release failures and stow the catch. A dangerous occupation, fishermen have been lost when hauled overboard by large tuna, and entire crews of vessels have vanished in poor weather conditions. This exhibition examines the evolution of methods and equipment associated with tuna pole fishing, and pays tribute to the fishermen who worked in the physically, financially and emotionally demanding industry of tuna poling. Towamba Acoustic Sessions - listen, learn, play & enjoy The Towamba Acoustic Sessions (TAS13) will again come to life on 18 May 2013. A series of informal 'workshops', held mostly around various campfires, will offer musicians and spoken word performers an opportunity to share their art, tricks and experiences in a family friendly bush setting. Formal workshops held from 10am to 4pm will include Children's Singing, Bodhran, Latin American Guitar, Advanced Finger Style Guitar, Dobro, Ukulele, Tin Whistle, Blues Harmonica, Bass, Clawhammer Banjo, Singing, Fiddle, and Growing Eco Vegies.

Food stalls, a bar and market stalls will ensure you have all you need for the day, and there will be plenty to keep the kids amused. A blackboard concert will run in the hall for most of Saturday, with selected artists invited back for a 'celebrity' show that night. Camping is available for just $10 (including hot showers), and food will be available from Friday night, until Sunday morning breakfast. The nearest shops and fuel are 30 Km away in Wyndham and Eden. The Forum brings together six highly regarded marine scientists from across Australia, presenting to community members the very latest in research. This year’s Forum theme is ‘Who Cares? Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Pambula Motorfest raises funds for Pambula Hospital Auxiliary After a hugely successful inaugural event last year, the Pambula Motorfest is back again for 2013. The event is held on Sunday 5th May at the Pambula Sporting Complex, and entry is open to cars, bikes, 4x4s, trucks, tractors and stationary engines. This year there is a monster raffle with first prize being a 6 x 4 box trailer packed with prizes, including a brand new Pee Wee 50 motorcycle and other goods, with a total value at over $5,000. This family friendly event is run to benefit the local community, with funds raised donated to the Pambula Hospital Auxiliary. Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June. Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. The location of the Wharf was chosen as it was the only suitable site between Merimbula and Bermagui, with protection from southerly winds provided by the adjacent headland. Passengers travelling to Sydney shared the journey with local produce, and often pigs on their way to market, hence the name "Pig and Whistle Fleet" in relation to the Tathra steamships. Because there was no railway line or decent roads, the steamer service was crucial to the region, and it continued to operate until 1954. The Tathra Wharf is now classified

by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. is a popular spot for fishing. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for

swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. On the 27th - 28th April, Tathra will be taken over by mountain bike enthusiasts competing in the third annual Tathra MTB Enduro. See page 19 opposite for more information.

Spend an hour, a day or more walking in the National Parks and reserves of the Region. The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. Ask at a NPWS office or local tourist information centre about others. Please note that for all these walks, strong footwear should be worn, carry food and water, and take clothing suitable for changing weather conditions.

1. The Big Hole/Marble Arch Deua National Park 4km return Approx. 1.5 hours Big Hole 13km return Approx. 5.5 hours Marble Arch

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Start this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, Allocasuarina paludosa, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

ABC Cheese Factory The ABC Cheese Factory is located in the heart of historical Central Tilba and is the home of Cheese on the South Coast of NSW. The ABC Cheese Factory was established in 1891 and was the first Cheese Co-op in NSW. Today the ABC Cheese Factory is owned by local dairy farmers Erica and Nic Dibden who bottle their unhomogenised milk onsite and make cheese. Tilba Living History

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous Cheese Factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Narooma • Bodalla • Moruya Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a patrolled beach, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. Narooma is the base for charter operators offering tours to nearby Montague Island, with its spectacular lighthouse, little penguin and fur seal colonies and Aboriginal heritage. Just up the road from Narooma is Bodalla, the village with the magnificent stone church and many other historic buildings. The village was developed by Thomas Mort in the

late 1800s as a private country estate based around the dairy and cheese making industries, which still dominate Bodalla today. All Saints Anglican Church was commissioned by the Mort family in memory of Thomas Mort and his wife. Work began on the Church in 1880 and was completed in 1901. Further north, the township of Moruya also has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore. It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place. These days however, Moruya is known for the large, intricately carved wooden

poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.

Eurobodalla River of Art inspired by creative life The Eurobodalla River of Art celebrates the wealth and vibrancy of creative practitioners living in and complementing the beautiful environment of the Eurobodalla. Residents and visitors will be able to delight in an appetising program of live music, theatre, film, visual arts and literature from one end of the shire to the other. An exciting new project premiering as part of the 2013 Festival is the Prices Café exhibition. Set in a recreated café with video interviews, photographs and music, Prices Café celebrates Moruya’s social hub for Aboriginal people in the 1950s and 60s and

brings to life an almost-forgotten moment in Moruya's history. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. Historic Mogo

The Original Gold Rush Colony The Mogo Maze has proven to be very popular with all ages since opening in time for the summer holidays. The fastest times recorded have been by littlies who chose to slither under the internal maze walls on their bellies. The response to the palisade timber has been very positive, as younger children can see other people moving through the gaps in the fencing. They can also reach the raised platform in the centre and look out over the top of the maze to the outside world. The Eureka theme on the storyboards on the dead end panels has proven to be the most popular so far. The Eureka flag hangs on the sailing mast at the entrance, and above the magnificent

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.

Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. Head north to Durras Lake for a spot of fishing, bushwalk in the Murramarang National Park or say hi to the kangaroos at Pebbly Beach.

Fundraising lunch supports Batemans Bay Writers Festival Planning is well under way for the inaugural Batemans Bay Writers Festival to be held in Batemans Bay in July 2014. In addition to celebrating all things literary, the Festival hopes to increase tourism and generate business for local traders in a quieter time of the year. To help get the Festival off the ground, the Festival committee is holding their first fundraising event on Saturday 25th May 2013. Peter FitzSimons AM, one of Australia’s most respected authors, TV and radio personalities, will be speaking at a Literary Luncheon at the Batemans Bay

Soldiers Club. Over a champagne lunch, enjoy Peter's stories about life, history and the Australian way. Known as a bit of a larrikin and a stirrer, Peter is a staunch Republican and advocates a change of design for the Australian Flag. He was one of seven children raised on a citrus orchard during the 1960s, one of the themes in his book 'A Simpler Time'. Kayaking & canoeing in the land of many waters Eurobodalla, land of many waters, is kayaking heaven with four major river systems, 20 lakes, 83 beaches and many islands along 130 kilometres of Batemans Marine Park coastline. Thinking about kayaking around the Eurobodalla this autumn? Listed below are some great flatwater and sea kayaking routes, courtesy of Eurobodalla Coast Tourism's Kayaking & Canoeing brochure. Take a more detailed map if you’re paddling somewhere new and without a guide, or pick up the brochure from one of the Eurobodalla Tourist Information Centres. Here are some important safety tips to remember when you undertake any of the routes in this guide: Be Seen-Be Safe - Wear bright coloured clothing. Keep out of mooring areas (where other boats hide your presence). Water safety - Be aware of water safety rules and procedures with information from boating, marine or water sports organisations. Skills - Take a lesson if you need to. Instruction is available in Eurobodalla for all levels of kayaking skills. Safety Vests - Always wear a life vest or life jacket. Helmets - Recommended for surf and white-water kayaking and when paddling near rough water and rocks. Paddle with someone If possible and tell someone where you will be going and when you expect to return. Maps - Take a map with you if you are not familiar with the route. Be aware of local conditions - Including

currents, tides, water levels, shoreline variations and special hazards. Check the weather - Plus know about likely changes, such as offshore winds that may occur. Wind - Will slow down paddling and the extra effort required will tire you more quickly than normal. Also think about offshore winds – don’t get blown away from shore. Waves - Can be larger than expected and can change in size depending on water depth. Tides - Can be strong and having to paddle against the tide can make you tire quickly. Tidal flow against the wind direction will make waves steeper and water more choppy – plan your paddle according to tides. Surf - Check the conditions and stay away from swimmers. Emergency Contact.
