May Welcome to May on the Far South Coast - summer has well and truly gone, with the nights drawing in and a chill in the air, but on the plus side, the autumn colours are truly spectacular.
May kicks off with the fabulous Narooma Oyster Festival on Saturday 2nd. Featuring fresh oysters from some of the world's most environmentally sustainable oyster growing regions, tours, cooking demonstrations, oyster opening competition and much, much more, the Festival is a great reason to spend the weekend in Narooma. Details on page 23. Another big festival during May is the Eurobodalla River of Art, held around the Eurobodalla Shire. Running over 10 days, Eurobodalla River of Art has an appetising program of live music, theatre, film, visual arts and poetry from one end of the shire to the other. Treat yourself, book a 10 day break and immerse yourself in the diverse artistic
endeavours featured in the program. Find more information on page 25. Two theatrical productions are being staged this month - Spectrum Theatre Group is presenting Cinderella The Pantomime at Twyford Hall in Merimbula. Talented performers dance, sing and act, and the audience are encouraged to play their part too! Details on page 9. Bega gets a little taste of Bollywood with the classic Indian tale of the Ramayana, presented by Theatre Onset and In Theatre. With a cast of 20 actors and five musicians, all of whom are high school age, The Ramayana is bound to be highly entertaining. You'll find more information on page 14. Also on page 14 is a preview of the Perisher PEAK Music Festival, coming up on the June long weekend. Enjoy May, and don't forget to watch out for wildlife on the roads.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
2
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

from overseas on designs of Canadian log cabins. He created a scale model of the cabin, secured building permission from the Girl Guide movement and oversaw the building of the cabin which was opened in 1936. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away at Edrom Lodge in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. The exhibition is on show until 18th October - details at www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

When you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. Logan built the beautiful Edrom Lodge as his family's home on the shores of Twofold Bay, now a heritage listed property located near the multi-purpose wharf. Taking three years to build and employing many locals, the construction of 'Edrom' as it was then known, was a boon to the Eden economy. Another local landmark that remains a symbol of Logan’s community spirit is the Log Cabin located in Bass Street. When he became aware that his daughter's girl guide brigade were desperate for a meeting place, Logan bought land and sourced information

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage
of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an oldfashioned milkbar.

Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue.

Bar Beach, Merimbula Š Paul Callaghan
Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

www.monthlyimag.com.au
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during January as well as the annual Jazz Festival in June. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Cinderella as you’ve never imagined! This pantomime version of Cinderella, written by Ben Crocker and directed by Judy Davidson, holds to the essence of the fairy tale, while managing to be outrageously funny and rather naughty. This production aims to showcase the wealth of talent in the far south coast, with dances beautifully choreographed by Amber Little, singers performing a great variety of old and modern numbers, and some superb acting. Just wait till you see the ugly stepsisters! Seasoned actors John Fraser and Sam Roberts do their cross-
dressing scenes with great gusto, and should have audiences in stitches! Audience participation is not simply encouraged – it’s essential! Spectrum Theatre Group is performing ‘Cinderella the Pantomime’ at Twyford Hall, Merimbula, on May 15th, 16th, 22nd, and 29th and 30th, at 7:30pm (Cabaret seating $25). Sunday May 17th, Saturday 23rd, and Sunday 24th at 2pm (Theatre seating $22). Tickets are available now via Spectrum Theatre Group’s new online booking system. You’ll find it at www.spectrumtheatregroup.com.au. For additional information or help, phone 0466 096 217. Please note: this production is suitable for children 5 years and over. Mothers Day Classic raises funds across Australia Merimbula's very own Mothers Day Classic is being held this year on Sunday 10th May. Now a major national community event, the Mothers Day Classic began in 1998 as a walk in the park to raise money for breast cancer research. In 2014, a record 130,000 people across Australia ran or walked in a Mother's Day Classic event in eleven cities and 88 regional locations. Participants and fundraisers raised $4.5m for National Breast Cancer Foundation research programs, taking the total raised over
17 years to $24.3m. The Merimbula event has a relaxed feel and does not have electronic timing, hence no race packs or bibs are required to be collected by participants. You can turn up on the day and walk or run! To save time though, you can register online until 11.59pm on Wednesday 6th May 2015 (EST). The course starts at Spencer Park on Main Street, Merimbula and continues along Fishpen Road and back. The 10km route goes around twice. On-the-day registrations open at 8am, with the 10km run starting at 9am, the

The Ramayana brings a little bit of Bollywood to Bega An all-acting, all-dancing musical extravaganza based on a classical Indian tale is the latest production by Theatre Onset/In Theatre in Bega. Featuring 20 actors and 5 musicians in Years 7 - 12, cast members currently attend either the Sapphire Coast Anglican College, Bega High school, Lumen Christi or are homeschoolers. The Ramayana is directed by Mahamati, with Rachelle Blick providing musical direction and choreographic direction from Cassia Jamieson. The play is familiar territory for both Mahamati and Rachelle; both were involved in Mumbulla School's production of the Ramayana in 2008, as were four of the cast members. Cassia is a long-time member of fLiNG Physical Theatre, a former Mumbulla School student who completed Year 12 at Bega High School last year. The story is an Indian classic - Rama, the personification of perfect manhood, as well as being the god Vishnu made into physical form, is banished from the Kingdom of his father, King Dasharat. Sita, Rama's
14

beautiful wife, (the personification of all that is good and virtuous in a woman), goes with him, as does his brother Lakshman, (the personification of all that is good and loyal in a friend or brother).
They spend 14 long years in banishment, but In their last year of exile they meet Hanuman, the Monkey God. Hanuman is destined to help Rama in his quest to defeat the Demon King, Ravana, who having been struck by Sita's beauty, promptly kidnaps her. This gets up Rama's nose no end, so with the help of Lakshman, Hanuman and his Monkey Brother Sugreev and their fabulously well-trained army of monkeys, they battle Ravana and his
Demon horde on the beautiful and plump island of Lanka. Guess what happens? In this version of The Ramayana, our hero and his friends are perhaps not quite the true personification of all that is good, but they are certainly very entertaining. The Ramayana is being performed at the Bega High School Hall at 7.30pm opening night is Friday 29th May, with performances on Saturday 30th May, Thursday 4th, Friday 5th and Saturday 6th June. Tickets cost $20 and are available through Trybooking from May 1st and at the door

The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Camping is available along the way or stay in comfort in the renovated Green Cape Lightkeepers Cottages. Park use fees apply.

Tilba Living History
Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Wagonga Inlet, Narooma Š Paul Callaghan
Narooma Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet, and it's also the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean. Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National
Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. It's also a great place to go bike riding, with a tracks around town that are perfect for kids to practice. If you're a hard-core bike enthusiast, there are mountain bike tracks and sealed roads aplenty to check out. If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore.

Moruya Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the BrinjaYuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in Hyde Park. These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.
