From The Editor Welcome to the May/June edition of the FSC iMag. Late autumn and early winter are really special times on the coast - the nights are certainly cool but the days are often warm, and keeping the fire going is still a novelty! Just because the temperature is falling doesn't mean the pace is slackening - there are still plenty of festivals and events happening for you to enjoy. The Merimbula Jazz Festival is celebrating its 36th year in 2016 - quite a feat for a small community. Bringing together jazz musicians and fans from all around Australia, this long weekend event has become a real get-together for the jazz community, and lovers of the wide range of jazz styles played get the benefit. Find more information on pages 14 - 15. The Sapphire Coast Turf Club is getting into the jazz vibe too with its Merimbula Jazz Festival Race Day, held on Sunday June 12th. The track at Kalaru is a fantastic venue, and there'll be a free jumping castle to keep the young ones occupied. If you can't wait until June, the Club has its Far South Cost Race Day on Sunday 1st May. You can read more on page 13. The Eurobodalla River of Art is an amazing 10 day festival running from May 20th - 29th with more than 100 events featuring music, visual arts, theatre, film, literature and workshops. George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whalewatching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Eden is a great base to explore the area south to the border, and is surrounded by National Parks and State Forests. The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Etched in Stone: the stories behind Eden’s War Memorial Between 2014-2018, nations around the world are commemorating the centenary of the First World War. Eden Killer Whale Museum’s exhibition Etched in Stone provides a local perspective on the stories behind the names of the First World War servicemen who are commemorated on Eden’s Cenotaph. With the First World War being fought on shores far from Australia, few families were able to visit grave sites or battle grounds. Local memorials provided a formal place for communities to grieve and remember those whose who would never come home. They also provided a place of commemoration where a grave was not possible, usually for the sad situation where soldiers were missing, presumed killed. As early as October 1915, Australians began establishing memorials commemorating those serving (or lost) overseas in the First World War. Coinciding with the first anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, fundraising for New
Fun for the whole family!
South Wales’ state memorial began in 1916, although it was not officially opened until 1934. In the Bega Valley Shire, memorial fundraising committees started to form in the early 1920s. The second in the Shire, Eden’s First World War memorial was officially unveiled in 1922. This was in the form of two simple marble honour rolls that were erected either side of the Council Chambers in Eden, which were later removed and incorporated into a new Cenotaph built in 1966. Located on Calle Left: Ernest Ralston. Courtesy of Mrs D Hawthorne. A signaller with the 33rd Battalion, Ernie was recommended four times for gallant conduct and devotion to duty before being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service in France. After the war he served as Lighthouse Keeper at Green Cape Lighthouse.
OPENING HOURS School Holidays: Monday to Saturday 9.30am – 3.30pm Sunday 10am to 3pm Usual Hours: Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm Group bookings available outside of these hours

Calle Street, the Cenotaph was built to include the names of local World War Two service personnel and today includes the names of personnel who have served in other theatres of war since. While memorials honour the names of service personnel, space prevents individual stories being told. The Fallen have always been given a special place in history, but what of the men who returned home physically and emotionally changed forever? Etched in Stone tries to understand the experience of some of Eden’s 122 First World War servicemen – the courageous and the deserters, the young and the old, the loss or survival of brothers, those
who went on to serve in the Second World War and those who never made it out of Australia the first time around. Etched in Stone is on display at Eden Killer Whale Museum until 2 December 2018.

Bill served in France until he was wounded in action and his true age was discovered while in hospital. William and Lot both served overseas with the Light Horse Regiment, with Lot going on to serve with the Volunteer Defence Force in World War II..

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake
The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

www.monthlyimag.com.au
Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the
26

case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre is a wonderful reproduction of the original butter factory that was situated on the site in the early 20th century and has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's. It provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. For those interested in the history of Bega, the Museum in the heart of the town houses a collection of photos, family histories, farm implements and machinery. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. There's a fantastic walking track that goes all the way from the sporting fields near the Bridge over to the Bega River. The track then follows the Old Racecourse.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen

from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground. Both are located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.
Hang out with the birds at On The Perch On the Perch has quickly become one of the ‘must see’ attractions of the Sapphire Coast. We now have more than 50 species from Australia, Africa and the Asia Pacific, and our two walk-in aviaries are the place to get up close and personal with some of them. Mornings are the best time to visit us as this is when the birds are most active and it is also when you will see our Keepers hard at work. At 11am and 1pm, our Meet the Keeper talks are very popular. If you are looking to
personalise your visit, our Keeper for a Day program gives you the chance! Enjoy locally roasted coffee in the ‘Brood Cafe’ or enjoy a world famous Bells Café Milkshake (all the way from Broken Hill) while you’re here. We are closing for our winter general maintenance program between 1st and 15th June and will re-open 10am on the 16th June. Our winter trading hours are 10am until 3pm Thursday to Sunday. Intriguing Cobargo
The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, General Store, school, Hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese making industries. Today, Cobargo is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. Cobargo combines the skills and craft
of a working village with a genuinely historic past, its streetscape featuring many turn of the century buildings. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the fantastic Laneway markets. Browse fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops
The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won the Cultural and Heritage Tourism award at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards four times, as well as winning the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award in 2011. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth

century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different. Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Not far from Mogo is the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens that features plants native to the Eurobodalla region. Stroll along the 6km of pathways observing a variety of birds and other native wildlife. Two tracks provided access to the Gardens for those with prams or limited mobility.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans

Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee.
