Welcome to the May/June edition of the Far South Coast iMag. We hope you enjoy the cool weather - it's a wonderful time of year with sunny days, night-time temperatures perfect for an open fire and plenty of events to check out. Have a look at our What's On feature on pages 28 - 29 for all the information you need to decide where to go and what to do. The festival season rolls on in May and June (it really only slows down for a few months each year!) with major events happening all along the coast and inland towns and villages. The Narooma Oyster Festival is back this year, and what a festival it is! On Saturday 6th May you can celebrate delicious oysters all day at the Food precinct. Check out the Big Oyster Bar and sample oysters from 5 different estuaries in the region, cooking demos or the oyster shucking competition. Read more on pages 38 - 39. The River of Art Festival is a ten day arts feast held at venues from Durras in the north to Bermagui in the south. There's a huge range of events including visual arts, live music,
theatrical performances, creative workshops and cultural activities. Head over to pages 42 and 43 for all the details. In Merimbula over the June long weekend is the Merimbula Jazz Festival, held for the 37th time in 2017 - that's quite an achievement! Featuring the many styles of jazz, the Festival is spread over six venues around town, plus there's the Saturday Street Parade followed by a free Jazz concert by the lake. You'll find all the information you need on pages 14 - 15. The iMag will help you plan all your holiday fun - keep it handy or download it onto your phone or tablet from the website at www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whalewatching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Eden is a great base to explore the area south to the border, and is surrounded by National Parks and State Forests. The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

New exhibition the Rag Tag Fleet exhibition opens at the The Rag Tag Fleet was a phrase penned by Ladislaw Reday, one of a group of Americans who came to Australia in 1942 as part of the Mission X team. With the Japanese defeating US forces in the Philippines, the next strategy was to drive Japanese forces out of New Guinea, and without an available fleet at hand, the Rag Tag Fleet was born. The Mission X team scoured Australia’s eastern seaboard and New Zealand inspecting and procuring an unlikely fleet of attack vessels for the US Army. Known as the US Small Ships Section, they included wooden trawlers, scows, sailing Right Knuckey Collection. Eden Killer Whale Museum Wooden fishing trawler, Zoie, was commandeered for the US Small Ships and survived being bombed in Oro Bay in New Guinea in 1942. Her owners, Bert Evans and Bill Priest, served on different vessels within the Small Ship Section.

Eden Killer Whale Museum craft and even a paddle-wheeler. While a fleet was beginning to be assembled, there was the realisation that crew were needed. Those fit enough were already engaged in the war, so it was left to the young, the old and those classed by the defence force as
medically unfit to take the helm. Charged with taking ammunition, supplies and troops through mostly unchartered waterways, these civilians faced enemy fire just the same as regular defence forces. However it is only within the last decade that their contribution to the American and Australian war effort has been officially recognised. Eden Killer Whale Museum’s latest exhibition The Rag Tag Fleet commemorates the 75th anniversary of the formation of this unusual fleet of ships, and remembers the men from the South Coast of NSW who served on them. The Rag Tag Fleet is on display at Eden Killer Whale Museum from 5th June 2017 – 4th February 2018. www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafés, restaurants, retailers, designers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Experience the many moods of the Merimbula Jazz Festival Merimbula is transformed into the Jazz Capital of the Far South Coast this June long weekend when the 2017 Merimbula Jazz Festival takes over this beautiful coastal town. The Merimbula Jazz Festival is one of Australia’s longest-running and most highly acclaimed festivals and celebrates its 37th year in 2017. With an amazing organising committee and support from local businesses, the Jazz Festival continues to hit all the right notes. Jazz musicians and fans from all around Australia make this event a permanent fixture on their calendars. Many say that it is the best Jazz Festival in Australia. Come and see for yourself! The Festival kicks off this year with a black tie Ball to be held at Merimbula RSL. The emphasis will be on dancing, with a 17 piece big band recreating the atmosphere of the “Swing Era”, when women wore elegant gowns and men dressed to the nines and kept the music pumping until late. Admission is $75pp and not only includes an evening of outstanding music but a fantastic 3 course menu. Further details at www. merimbulajazz.org.au OR merimbularsl.com.au/ whats-on/merimbula-jazz-festival/. There are six official Jazz Festival venues, buskers and in-house live music at many cafes and restaurants around Merimbula to showcase the many moods of jazz. Quiet jazz, mellow jazz, bluesy jazz, rocking jazz, funky jazz, latin jazz, swinging jazz, solos, small bands, big bands and great vocals. There is music to suit all tastes. The Saturday Street Parade again starts at 10.30am, allowing more musicians to play in

As usual there will be vintage cars and community groups marching. This parade is the only one of its type in the Bega Valley so come along and enjoy the great atmosphere created by the many hundreds who flock to watch the Parade. The free “Jazz Concert By The Lake” will follow the Parade and set the mood for the weekend. Club Sapphire is again hosting the Jazz Art competition and displaying the paintings of local artists. The winning painting will become the official poster for the 2018 Festival. On Monday, Club Sapphire hosts the Jazz Hatters Party with non stop music and prizes for the best jazz themed hat. Entry is free for all. The Merimbula Jazz Festival has long had a focus on encouraging and nurturing new Jazz talent, and to further this aim is again running the Jazz Quest, open to individual performers up to and including 25 years of age. The Jazz Quest is an open competition with no residency requirement for entrants. Thanks to the Lakeview Hotel for sponsoring this event and offering some substantial cash prizes. Twyford Hall is Jazz Headquarters and has tickets, programs and badges as well as being an official venue. It is open 9am - 5pm Thursday 8th June, 9am till late Friday 9th June and 9am 5pm Saturday 10th June. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of goods every year.
A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. It provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre.

StunningTathra Things to See & Do Get up close to birds at On The Perch's walk-through aviaries Try mountain biking on the trails around Tathra Check out all the cafes and restaurants in town Enjoy a walk or bike ride from Tathra to the Bega River at Mogareeka VISITOR INFORMATION Tathra Beach Supermarket 1/65 Andy Poole Dr, Tathra www.tathratourism.com.au
With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during the East Coast Low that hit the region in last June, however the repairs have been completed allowing full access to the Wharf as well as the cafe.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground. Both are located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.
Walk the scenic Kangarutha Track this autumn If you’re keen to do some bush-walking, try the 9km Kangarutha Track, along the spectacular northern shores of Bournda National Park. You can begin at the northern end of the track at Kianinny Bay near Tathra, or at the Wallagoot Lake Boat Club at the southern end. The track takes in the rugged coastline, with many small sandy or pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs, but not many options for swimming. If the full 9km, 5 hour walk is too hard, you can tackle a section, for example, a 1.7km walk from Kianinny Bay to Boulder Bay, or a 1.8km walk from Wallagoot Lake Boat Club to Turingal Head, or walk half way to White Rock Quarry. Another option is Turingal Head to Games Bay, where the track passes through a secluded old dairy farm area; this 5km return walk is rated as medium, and takes 2 hours. THE RAG TAG FLEET 5 June - 4th February 2018, Eden Killer Whale Museum, Eden. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of what must be one of the most unusual fleets to take to the water during World War 2, The Rag Tag Fleet is a fascinating exhibition exploring a little-known part of naval history. The US Navy, suffering defeats in the Phillipines, decided to focus on driving the Japanese out of New Guinea. The only problem was, they didn't have any ships or sailors available. The Mission X team was charged with scouring Australia's eastern seaboard and New Zealand for suitable attack vessels. Known offiicially as the US Small Ships Section, but nick-named the Rag Tag Fleet by Mission X team member Ladislaw Reday, vessels included wooden trawlers, scows, sailing craft and even a paddle-wheeler. With sailors away at the war, the Rag Tag Fleet was crewed

Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira River Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park
Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village though; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has it's old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.
Develop your practice at Bikram Yoga Sapphire Coast Cobargo is home to an excellent hot yoga studio, Bikram Yoga Sapphire Coast. You can’t miss it - it’s the little yellow building with the bright red door in Cobargo's main street. Owned and operated by one of Australia’s top Bikram yoga practitioners, Amrei Marden, the studio caters for beginners who have never set foot inside a yoga studio before, for people wanting to rehabilitate injuries and for those who want to improve their general health. The Cobargo Bikram yoga community is diverse and welcoming, with people of all ages and levels of fitness attending regularly. You work at your own pace under the expert guidance of Amrei. Don’t be scared by the “hot” in hot yoga. Amrei maintains the studio at a comfortable
temperature and most people find that they acclimatise quickly after just a couple of lessons. Many people say the heat helps them manage chronic pain. Testimonials include people who say the practice has helped them reduce arthritis pain, manage high blood pressure, increase balance, flexibility and strength, reduce varicose veins, manage back pain, manage depression and improve overall health and fitness. Amrei also offers weekend yoga retreats - which may be a great holiday option if you want something to kickstart a healthy living program! Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, nestled between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet, with Gulaga Mountain (Mt. Dromedary) watching over the township. It's also the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafés and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are
lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean. Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top ecotourism destination, you can take a National Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. It's also a great place to go bike riding, with tracks around town that are perfect for kids to practice their riding skills on. If you're a hard-core mountain bike enthusiast, there are mountain bike tracks and sealed roads aplenty to check out, including some great tracks through local state forests and national parks. Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops
The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won the Cultural and Heritage Tourism award at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards four times, as well as winning the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award in 2011. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth

Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Not far from Mogo is the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens that features plants native to the Eurobodalla region. Mogo Orchid & Fern Nursery
Specialising in cold climate Australian native orchids, the Mogo Orchid & Fern Nursery has everything for the orchid lover and more. Housed in a large greenhouse are plants of varying ages, from 1 year old plants upwards. There is also a large range of orchids mounted on tree-fern backs and cork, and different varieties of locally grown ferns. Always popular, Mogo Orchid & Fern Nursery has orchids that flower throughout the year, and new stock arrives on a weekly basis. Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.
Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of places to try them.
