From The Editor Welcome to the new look Far South Coast iMag....it's been a while since we've changed the layout of the magazine, so we've really gone to town this time! Even though the iMag is now smaller, it's still jam-packed with information about what's happening in our region where to go, what to see and what to do. It fits into your glove box in the car or hand bag really well, meaning you can keep it handy as you travel around. The A5 format means it's easier to read on a phone, tablet or mobile device too; it's easy to download before you leave home or whilst you're on the road, so you can plan ahead! As always you're spoilt for choice with events over the next couple of months. The Eden Whale Festival is a must, and even if you've been before, it's worth another visit to get a dose of the great Eden spirit that surrounds this event. Have a look at their website for a list of events (see page 7) - there are way too many to list here! Continuing the water theme, there's the Narooma Boats Afloat featuring traditional wooden boats (check out page 40), and the 35th Merimbula Classic where you can see outstanding kite surfing, wave sailing and Stand Up Paddle surfing (details on page 29). Plus there's art exhibitions, live music, theatre, markets - so get out there and enjoy!

Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953
George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whalewatching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Eden is a great base to explore the area south to the border, and is surrounded by National Parks and State Forests. The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.
Migrate to Eden for the Eden Whale Festival Join the whales migrating to the Far South Coast for the Eden Whale Festival - an annual celebration that combines whale watching from shore and sea with live shows, hands on family fun, street theatre, film, music, seafood and local produce. Eden's whale watching charter operators are ready to take you on an experience you'll never forget - seeing humpback whales in the calm waters of Twofold Bay. If you're lucky you might see mothers and calves feeding and playing as they make the journey south to the Antarctic for the summer. Charter operators generally offer a 100% guarantee that whales will be sighted - sometimes they're so close it's hard to tell who's checking out who! Back on land, the high-energy street parade on Saturday 31st is bigger and better than ever, kicking off at 10.30am. Throughout the day there are events at Snug Cove and around the town, including book launches, family

shows, land-based whale watching with NPWS, the famous Capstan Pull, oyster-shucking competition, film screenings, tours and more. The Whale Song Sunset Gig starts at 6pm, and is followed by the famous Fireworks at 8.45pm. There's plenty to do on Sunday 1st November as well, with Open Days, exhibitions, Hot Rods on Imlay, snorkel tours, seamen's memorial service plus tours of Eden township and the cemetery. Etched in Stone: the stories behind Eden’s War Memorial Between 2014-2018, nations around the world are commemorating the centenary of the First World War. Eden Killer Whale Museum’s exhibition Etched in Stone provides a local perspective on the stories behind the names of the First World War servicemen who are commemorated on Eden’s Cenotaph. With the First World War being fought on shores far from Australia, few families were able to visit grave sites or battle grounds. Local memorials provided a formal place for communities to grieve and remember those whose who would never come home. They also provided a place of commemoration where a grave was not possible, usually for the sad situation where soldiers were missing,

presumed killed. As early as October 1915, Australians began establishing memorials commemorating those serving (or lost) overseas in the First World War. Coinciding with the first anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, fundraising for New South Wales’ state memorial began in 1916, although it was not officially opened until 1934. In the Bega Valley Shire, memorial fundraising committees started to form in the early 1920s. The second in the Shire, Eden’s First

emotionally changed forever? Etched in Stone tries to understand the experience of some of Eden’s 122 First World War servicemen – the courageous and the deserters, the young and the old, the loss or survival of brothers, those who went on to serve in the Second World War and those who never made it out of Australia the first time around. World War memorial was officially unveiled in 1922. This was in the form of two simple marble honour rolls that were erected either side of the Council Chambers in Eden, which were later removed and incorporated into a new Cenotaph built in 1966. Located on Calle Calle Street, the Cenotaph was built to include the names of local World War Two service personnel and today includes the names of personnel who have served in other theatres of war since. While memorials honour the names of service personnel, space prevents individual stories being told. The Fallen have always been given a special place in history, but what of the men who returned home physically and

Try a Snorkel Safari Tour with Marine Discovery Centre What could be more amazing, relaxing, enjoyable and exciting than laying on the surface of the calm blue ocean gazing below while snorkelling? Fitted with a mask to see, a snorkel to breathe, fins to help you glide effortlessly through the water and a wetsuit to help you float and for warmth. Peaceful. Watery. Perfect. Pleasing to the senses, it is mesmerising floating above a watery wilderness filled with a myriad of both familiar and strange animals and plants of the sea. There are colourful fish, scuttling crabs, pretty seastars, maybe a tiny blue nudibranch or a massive black stingray? There’s seaweed and algae of all different hues – reds, greens, oranges and blues. Perhaps you’ll chance above a gloomy octopus; its orange tentacles curled around its body, sitting silent as your large shadow passes slowly above its home. You catch his eye and gently dive down for a closer look. He is as curious as you are and he reaches out a long tentacle to touch your finger. As you drift gently, the world outside is replaced
by the clicking, chattering and snapping sounds of urchins feeding on algae, crabs munching, fish communicating and going about their business, only darting away for cover as you swim overhead. A curious moray eel slithers back into his hole, the stingaree stays still at his cleaning station. Then you spot something in the seaweed that for a second, you can’t work out why it is different. You get closer and there it is, in all it’s delicate beauty, a small and precious seahorse; its tail curled around a piece of weed while it hovers and blends remarkably into its surroundings. You lay motionless on the surface of the tranquil sapphire sea and watch, you float, you just….be. Snorkelling. Why wouldn’t you? Join professional and qualified guides on a snorkel safari tour and let us help you discover a magical and amazing world of diversity beneath the sea. 02 6496 1699. Gear hire is available. HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake
The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.
Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Wild Rye's Now Open in Cann River and Pambula Well-known throughout the Bega Valley and beyond, Wild Rye's Baking Co. has expanded its operations, with new premises in Cann River. With many of its devoted Victorian customers looking for high quality food when travelling to the Far South Coast, Cann River was the logical solution for a Wild Rye's take-away, offering the same high standard products, but with fast service and easy parking on the Highway. Local Cann River residents (and those from outlying areas) are already converted to the high standard of Wild Rye's products, with a loyal band of regulars already appearing daily. Food is prepared every day in the kitchens of the Pambula shop, using local produce where possible, and then driven down to Cann River in a special refrigerated vehicle. Wild Rye's have created a range of simple, fresh sandwiches, toasties and paninis, perfect for a quick bite to eat when travelling. Wild Rye's famous pies are also available at
Cann River, with favourites like the traditional Aussie meat pie made from locally grown chunky beef through to seafood mornay and lamb Rogan Josh. For the vegetarians, choose from blue cheese, spinach and cauliflower or lentil and wild mushroom. The all-important take-away coffee is a crucial part of the Cann River operation. Wild Rye's roaster Erin roasts all their coffee on-site in Pambula using a German Probat Coffee Roaster. Maintaining the highest quality coffee by sourcing only in-season speciality beans has paid off, with Wild Rye's receiving a Silver Award at the 2014 Australian International Coffee Awards for their seasonal espresso blend. Also available are a selection of cakes (including gluten-free) and pastries, and of course Wild Rye's range of breads, made by hand using traditional methods. Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the
region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

He may bring them a leaf or a piece of cardboard or bark or any of his other toys. He may turn his head sideways and talk to them by opening his beak a little, or spreading his wings. When he is excited, his eyes glow red. He is a White-winged Chough. He was rejected by his own Chough family, and by another Chough family. Choughs will normally adopt from other families and so avoid inbreeding. In fact, Chuff himself did not want to be adopted. Choughs are extremely intelligent, and normally learn skills from their families over many years before they are fully mature. They can behave like clowns, and they play games. Chuff is fed by Potoroo Palace staff, but he forages as well. He loves mealworms and
beetles. Sometimes he is taken down to the large enclosure where the Tawny Frogmouths live. There he flies around bossing the Doves and trying to get the Bettongs to play. When he has had enough, he comes back to his carer for a cuddle and to be taken back to his pen near the cafe. www.potoroopalace.com Below: Chuff having a chuckle

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the

case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre is a wonderful reproduction of the original butter factory that was situated on the site in the early 20th century and has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's. It provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. For those interested in the history of Bega, the Museum in the heart of the town houses a collection of photos, family histories, farm implements and machinery. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. Take a trip to Brogo Dam and hire a canoe from Brogo Wilderness Canoes. The Dam is located on the edge of the Wadbilliga National Park and offers spectacular scenery.
Bega Showjumping Cup celebrates 20th anniversary The prestigious Bega Showjumping Cup event is turning 20 and to celebrate, the Bega Showjumping Club is hosting an 8 day long party! From Monday 28th December - Monday 4th January, the Bega Showground will be home to hundreds of horses and their families, some who travel from as far away as Queensland and Victoria to participate. Two rings of showjumping will be running throughout the Festival, with a rest from competition on New Year's Day. Some of the best showjumpers in Australia are expected to attend, attracted by over $48,000 in prize money and bonus incentives. The Bega Showjumping Cup itself is run over 3 rounds, with the winner taking home $2,000 plus a custom, made-to-measure Antares saddle, valued up to $7000. If someone takes out both the Cup on the 31st and the AM5 event on Jan 2nd, they'll receive a cash bonus

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Twig & Feather
It all started when Monique Lohse’s sister bought her a candle making course for her birthday. It sparked in Monique a drive to experiment and learn the art of candle making. Now, a few years later, Monique gave up her marketing career in Sydney, moved back to Cobargo and Twig & Feather was born. Twig and Feather is all about ‘creating the comforts of home’, offering a unique range of homewares, kitchenware, stationery, the quirky yet
practical, and Monique’s own handmade candles, fragrance diffusers, greeting cards and terrariums. Monique makes candles using natural waxes: palm wax and soy wax, which are sourced from sustainable and renewable resources. Amongst candles with fragrances such as ‘Champagne and Strawberries’ and ‘Ginger Ale’, Monique started making a range of novelty candles in tins, eg. ‘Fresh Cut Grass (no mowing needed)’ and ‘It’s Time for a Shave and a Haircut’.

Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the Brinja-Yuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by

the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in Hyde Park. These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won the Cultural and Heritage Tourism award at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards four times, as well as winning the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award in 2011.
