From The Editor Welcome to the November/December edition of the FSC iMag the last edition for 2016 - where did this year go? The Eden Whale Festival, held on 29th - 30th October is an annual celebration of Eden and its connection to the whales, and there are still whales to be seen. You can often see humpbacks blowing columns of spray, flipper-slapping and taillobbing from the beach or a headland; an amazing sight indeed. The Merimbula Sailboard Club is once again holding it's Merimbula Classic event - for the 36th time! It's a weekend of kite surfing, wave sailing and stand-up paddling, and it's truly amazing to watch. Check out page 15 for more information. Another water-based event is the wonderful Narooma Boats Afloat, held on November 11th - 13th. The event brings together traditional timber boats and their owners for a weekend of puttering around on Wagonga Inlet. Read more on page 23. To get into the Christmas spirit, you've got a couple of choices. The Choir of St James Church Sydney are performing Christmas carols at the Four Winds Windsong Pavilion on 17th November details are on page 37. Another family-friendly option is the Lions Christmas Carols at Magic Mountain on December 16th - head over to page 16 for more info.

Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whalewatching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Eden is a great base to explore the area south to the border, and is surrounded by National Parks and State Forests. The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Andrew Douglas - Bringing new life to much-loved furniture These days its seems things aren't built to last like they used to be, particularly when it comes to furniture. What do you do though with an old chair or couch that's looking a bit worse for wear? Andrew Douglas is an expert in recovering period and modern furniture, helping people bring new life to their favourite pieces of furniture. Andrew has been in the upholstery business for 30 years, and has been based in Pambula for the previous nine years. He has an extensive range of fabrics

to choose from, many of which won't be found anywhere else on the coast. Andrew specialises in diamond buttoning, a tricky technique used when covering chairs or lounges (see ad below). Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

12

www.monthlyimag.com.au

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Have tons of fun at Merimbula's Top Fun Looking for something fun to do with the kids? At Top Fun in Merimbula, you’ll find Ten Pin Bowling, the Zone 3 Laser game, an 18-hole Mini Golf course and plenty of video and skillbased games. In fact, you’ll probably need a whole day to experience it all. For those who enjoy Ten Pin Bowling but need a bit of extra help, there are special aids available (bumpers, ramps and special balls), so that everyone can join in and have fun. For an adrenalin pumping experience try the Zone 3 laser game, where you can test your skills and courage in the ultraviolet, smoke filled maze, whilst dodging your opponents. There are video and skills-based games too, and tickets can be won with many of the amusements which can then be used to redeem prizes at the Kiosk. The 18-hole Mini golf course has been

designed to provide maximum fun for all ages, and there’s a long-standing record just waiting to be broken! Admission and parking are free, and snacks and coffee are available. Open 7 days, Top Fun is located at the top of the town at 99 Main St. Merimbula. Phone 6495 3091, or visit their website at www.topfun.com.au

Watersports rule at the Merimbula Classic Spectators will be treated to outstanding performances from some of the world’s best in the respective disciplines of kite surfing, wave sailing and Stand Up Paddle surfing at the 36th annual Merimbula Classic on 24th - 27th November. The Merimbula Classic is the longest running event of its type in the world, still going and growing after 36 years. It brings over 280 competitors from around Australia and overseas to Merimbula. Depending on conditions, the water action begins early off Main Beach, with the Stand Up Paddle surfers getting as many waves as possible before the morning on-shore breeze gets up.

Once that happens, the SUP surfers are driven out of the water to be replaced by kite surfers and wave sailors. The sight of kite surfers and wave sailors flying above the water, performing aerial tricks at high speeds is something to behold - it's literally breath-taking. Local ABC radio 810AM/106.3 FM and 2EC radio 102.5fm/765am report regularly on the action and progress so keep tuned-in, or check at the Tourist Information Centre. The Game of Foams themed party program is just as full-on as the action on the water. For more information, check the Club's website at merimbulasailboardclub.com.au

Quality and service at Ginger & Luvvy How many of us walk through the clothing racks of our favourite boutiques, running our hands over the fabrics and secretly wondering which one is actually worth buying and will it last more than a few washes? At Ginger & Luvvy and Koko Maia, we concentrate on two things only… quality and service. Most of us already know our natural fabrics like silk, cotton, lines, wool…they are natural and have no threat to our health, but are they the only fabrics worth investing in? Cupro, viscose, rayon and modal are all derivatives of wood pulp and have extremely attractive qualities. Soft to the touch, breathability, hard wearing and flexible for the designer, they are also easy care. The quality of our garments mean you invest in great clothing that will meet your needs for longer than the cheap garments that seem

attractive, but are actually money wasters. Our service…its the best. You are our focus and we love helping people and we love it even more when you walk out with, not only a quality garment, but a smile on your face. Pop in and say hi…you will love Ginger & Luvvy and Koko Maia…….our locals do!

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the

26

www.monthlyimag.com.au

case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre is a wonderful reproduction of the original butter factory that was situated on the site in the early 20th century and has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's. It provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. For those interested in the history of Bega, the Museum in the heart of the town houses a collection of photos, family histories, farm implements and machinery. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. There's a fantastic walking track that goes all the way from the sporting fields near the Bridge over to the Bega River. The track then follows the Old Racecourse.

Waves and Water photographic exhibition comes to Bega Just in time for summer, the Bega Valley Regional Gallery is hosting an exhibition of famous beach photographs, titled Waves and Water. Iconic photographs capture Australian beach culture from the 1930s to today. Sunbathers, swimmers, surfers and surf life savers are depicted in this collection of photographs from the Australian National Maritime Museum. The exhibition includes Max Dupain's iconic image, the Sunbaker, Ray Leighton's surfers posed with their longboards, images from Jeff Carter's 1960s surfing safari, and Roger Scott's "critical moment" photographs, taken as an individual catches a wave or dives into the ocean. Anne Zahalka explores ideas of Australian cultural identity and stereotypes by reworking familiar images from the media and the history of art in the series Bondi: playground of the Pacific. Narelle Autio provides a different view of the

ocean swimmer from beneath the surface of the waves, and Ian Lever renders the beauty and moods of Sydney's ocean pools at dawn and dusk. Waves and Water is a touring exhibition from the Australian National Maritime Museum, and is open from 9th December – 4 February 2017 Find more information at: www.anmm.gov.au/whats-on/exhibitions/ontour/waves-and-water

StunningTathra Things to See & Do Get up close to birds at On The Perch's walk-through aviaries Try mountain biking on the trails around Tathra Check out all the cafes and restaurants in town Enjoy a walk or bike ride from Tathra to the Bega River at Mogareeka VISITOR INFORMATION Tathra Beach Supermarket 1/65 Andy Poole Dr, Tathra www.tathratourism.com.au

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during the East Coast Low that hit the region in June, and it may still be closed to the public for some time. You can still enjoy the view from the car park adjacent

30

to the Wharf though. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground. Both are located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.

Hang out with the birds at On The Perch On the Perch has quickly become one of the ‘must see’ attractions of the Sapphire Coast. We now have more than 70 species from Australia, Africa and the Asia Pacific, and our three walk-in aviaries are the place to get up close and personal with some of them. Mornings are the best time to visit us as this is when the birds are most active and it is also when you will see our Keepers hard at work.

At 11am and 1pm, our Meet the Keeper talks are very popular. If you are looking to personalise your visit, our Keeper for a Day program gives you the chance! Enjoy locally roasted coffee in the ‘Brood Cafe’ or enjoy a world famous Bells Café Milkshake (all the way from Broken Hill) while you’re here. Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira River Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

34

www.monthlyimag.com.au

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village though; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has it's old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.

Christmas shopping at Bangles Gallery For more than 40 years the focus of Cobargo's fantastic pottery shop, Bangles, has been to provide quality, variety, affordable prices and great customer service. This philosophy makes Bangles Gallery a great place to do some of your Christmas shopping. Located in a magnificent two-storey timber building in the centre of Cobargo, pottery is at the heart of Bangles Gallery. A talented pool of craftspeople supply Bangles with a selection of traditional and modern Australian-made pottery. There's an extensive range of cookware that is both beautiful and functional, vases, pots, and

elegant decorative pieces. Bangles is not just about pottery though. A more diverse range of products has been introduced, including glassware, ironware, leadlight lamps and beautifully crafted cutlery sets. Reflecting the Bangles philosophy, these pieces all represent great value for money without sacrificing quality.. Browse through the well-stocked shop to find the perfect Christmas gift or something special for yourself. Bangles, Princes Highway. Phone 6493 6421.

Dromedary) watching over the township. It's also the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafés and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are

lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean. Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top ecotourism destination, you can take a National Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. It's also a great place to go bike riding, with tracks around town that are perfect for kids to practice their riding skills on. If you're a hard-core mountain bike enthusiast, there are mountain bike tracks and sealed roads aplenty to check out, including some great tracks through local state forests and national parks. If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafés and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

CharmingTilba Things to See & Do Go for a hike up Gulaga Mountain Try fishing at Mystery Bay Explore the fascinating shops Visit the historic ABC Cheese Factory Drop in to the Dromedary Hotel

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked in amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a 42

National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. A large section of the grounds have been developed over many years, with water features, spectacular mature trees and the Willow House overlooking the duck pond. It's a wonderful place to inspire and delight children, with many hidden features to find and plenty of space. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘oldfashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, jewellery, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. The annual Tilba Festival, held each Easter, is a wonderful expression of the laid-back Tilba vibe - it's a corporate sponsorship-free zone.
