Killer Whale Museum, Eden
Eden

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
2
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples, with beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Co. There are lots of things for the kids to
do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. Tathra's is also blessed with lots of cafes that serve good coffee.

Cobargo & Bermagui The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is far more than a working village. It is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the Laneway
markets. Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkeling, boating and canoeing. Throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River, or head out on one of the local charter boats. Don't miss a swim in the beautiful Blue

Central Tilba Farm Cabins Ever wondered what happens on a real working farm? Central Tilba Farm Cabins offers you the opportunity to find out. The cabins are located at ‘Braeside’, an historic 350 acre Tilba property at the foot of spectacular Mt. Dromedary (Gulaga Mountain) with lots of beautiful bush. There are 4 fully self-contained cabins, each one separated from the others to ensure privacy. Cabins have a main bedroom with a queen sized bed and a connecting shower and toilet, and an open–plan kitchen/living/dining room with a television and twin bunks for the kids (bring your own linen). Tilba Living History
Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores, and the famous Cheese Factory, all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Tucked between the coastal ranges and the ocean, Narooma is the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000
little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as on of the best in Australia.

Art, music and boats at Narooma Traditional Boats Afloat Festival
What started out as a gathering of likeminded lovers of wooden boats back in 2006 has grown into a major event for the township of Narooma. The Narooma Boats Afloat Festival, held on November 1st - 3rd, celebrates traditionally built timber clinkers and carvels, and attracts enthusiasts from all around south east Australia.
The Festival this year includes an art exhibition on a maritime theme - "Art in the Boatsheds", held in two sideby-side boatsheds in Forsters Bay from 10am - 5pm. The exhibition is in association with, and run by, Montague Art and Craft Society. From 12.30pm, you can have a stickybeak at these beautiful vessels
and chat to the skippers, then from 2pm there's "Jazz on the Water' with Second Time Around. On Sunday, from 10.30am - 12pm the Fleet will cruise down Wagonga Inlet under the bride, incorporating a Grand Parade along the Mill Bay Boardwalk For more information, visit www.naroomaboatsafloat.com

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.
Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards. Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.

The Mogo Maze has a Eureka theme, and has the Eureka flag hanging on the sailing mast at the entrance, and above, the magnificent mural painted by talented staff member Trevor Hyde. Guests can choose to run the maze on its own or take up the challenge of the Eureka Theme Crossword Puzzle. Questions are scattered throughout the maze, with cryptic clues to help solve the answers . Once completed, guests return their crosswords to reception to collect a prize. At the Original Gold Rush Colony it is possible to purchase tickets to the maze without paying to go into the Gold Rush Theme Park. Within the park, you can take a tour, pan for gold, or play mini-golf. Overnight guests receive free entry into the Gold Rush Theme Park, and all paying guests to the Theme Park may purchase discounted tickets for the maze and train. Clyde River, Batemans Bay © Paul Callaghan
Batemans Bay Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.

Join in the fun at the Batemans Bay Seaside Carnival The Batemans Bay Seaside Carnivale is a fabulous free family fun day held at the Corrigans Beach Reserve at Batehaven on Sunday November 17, 2013. The first Seaside Carnivale was held in 2011 as an initiative of a small committee of the Batemans Bay Chamber of Commerce, and the event has grown bigger and better every year. There are many performances by local schools and groups planned, as well as stalls and activities focussed on free (or minimal cost) activities for families. Competitions include decorated bikes, pet parade, teddy bears’ picnic and spanner throw. As in the past years, the ever-popular local Emergency Services vehicles will be in attendance for all aspiring firies, as well as representatives of the police force.
A variety of food stalls will tempt your taste buds, so you won't go hungry. One stall which never fails to attract attention is the Seaside Tombola. Here, tickets are sold for $5 each. The number on each ticket corresponds to an envelope which holds a voucher from a local business to a minimum value of $5 – and often much more! People have realised that you can’t lose, and can often win a fabulous prize which may include accommodation, food, services,
games, movie vouchers and entrance fees to various local attractions. For more information, contact Anne Minato on 0431 854 565 or email anne@minato.com.au
