November Welcome to November on the Far South Coast, when the whale traffic changes to mostly mothers and calves taking their time and hugging the coast on their southern migration. There are several choices for whale watching; you can go out on a whale watching cruise, a charter boat, fly along the coast in a plane or hang out on the nearest headland or cliff top. If you're at the beach and you're really lucky, you can sometimes see whales just 100 metres or so offshore! The Far South Coast is one of the best places to go whale watching in Australia; you don't have to travel far at all to see humpback whales plus other species including southern right, minke and false killer whales. The Eden Whale Festival on November 1st and 2nd celebrates the importance

of whales to the Eden community over the centuries - details on pages 2 and 6. There are lots of other things to do this November apart from whale-watching. The Bay Theatre Players are performing their last production for the yearthis month. One Act Wonders features six one act plays performed in one night. Find out more on page 28. Magic Mountain is opening its new Tree Climb Challenge in mid to late November, and it looks like it's going to be amazing! Flying foxes, climbing nets and log bridges are all part of the challenge, and Magic Mountain is asking - Are you up for it? Our What's On page has even more events happening this month - make sure you get out and enjoy the culture of the coast.

Killer Whale Museum, Eden

Eden

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

2

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry, visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shorebased whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as the number one whale watching destination in Australia, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Cat Balou Cruises have won numerous awards for their whale watching cruises.

Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters, including Broadwater Oysters.

What to See & Do Stroll around the beautiful historic Pambula Village Explore the Pambula River by kayak, canoe or boat Take a walk around Panboola Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Grab some fresh oysters from Broadwater Oysters at Pambula Lake.

Bega

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must...housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. It provides a fascinating insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region. Bega has survived the downturn in retail relatively well, and has shops stocking everything from antiques, unusual clothing, books, whole foods, cafes, nursery and major retail outlets. Bega has a thriving arts community, with its own Regional Gallery that hosts major exhibitions throughout the year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

Cobargo & Tathra The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, General Store, school, Hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese making industries. Today, Cobargo is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. historic past, its streetscape featuring many turn of the century buildings. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in. Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the fantastic Laneway markets. Browse fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There's also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker. Every February the Cobargo Folk Festival takes over the showground, attracting international artists and local performers alike. Featuring much more than folk music, the Festival brings together musicians playing a diverse range of music for dedicated fans. Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples, with beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. The Wharf has

been classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline. If you're at Tathra Beach you might see dolphins or even whales; they head south on their migration from September to November and can sometimes be seen from the beach. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl and playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka.

Tilba Living History

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga Mountain, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street. owned by local dairy farmers Erica and Nic Dibden who bottle their unhomogenised milk onsite and make cheese. Their milk and cheese can be purchased at the Factory or at many retail outlets across the South Coast of NSW. Come and watch cheese being made, milk being bottled or come and sample some of their delicious product. Cheese tastings are available at all times, as are tastings and sales of a large range of local South Coast honeys. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards. Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.
