October Welcome to spring on the Far South Coast where we are right in the thick of the whale watching season. Mother and calf pods are appearing off the coast and it's easy to see them, whether you're strolling on the beach, on a headland with binoculars, in a boat or in a plane. The Far South Coast is one of the best places to go whale watching in Australia; you don't have to travel far at all to see humpback whales plus other species including southern right, minke and false killer whales. Check page 14 for more information. Montreal Goldfield is holding its annual Heritage Day on Sunday 11th October, and with a performance called "Moments of Montreal Madness" happening throughout the day, how could you not go? There's also billy tea and damper, a sausage sizzle, games and
music all day - read more on page 22. The annual Eden Whale Festival is on at the end of the month, and the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre has a great range of activities and information about a huge range of marine species. See page 8 for details. Also happening at the end of the month is Moruya's second Granite Town festival. Featuring a truly amazing line-up of musicians including The Waifs, Saskwatch, Kingswood, Caravana Sun, Oka, Diesel n Dub plus a heap of local talent, the weekend is a serious treat for music fans. There's also Riverlights, a parade of floating lanterns on the Moruya River, Eat Street, a pop-up dining district in Riverside Park, and the Sandbar, a low tide experience with a difference! Have a great time this month whatever you do!

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
2
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

See whales at Eden - No. 1 whale watching destination in Australia! Now is a great time to visit Eden to watch majestic Humpback whales on their southern migration. Australian Geographic recently named Eden as the Number 1 whale watching destination in Australia and there is no better way to watch these giants of the deep than with Cat Balou Cruises. Cruises operate daily with a guarantee of seeing whales on both the half day and Family whale watching cruises. Cat Balou has a 99% success rate in seeing whales. In the rare event of not seeing whales at close range, a return free cruise or a refund of half the fare is offered. Cat Balou Cruises owner/operators, Gordon and Ros Butt are celebrating their 26th year of whale watching at Eden, making them the most experienced whale watching operators in NSW. They take pride in providing the highest level of customer service and safety, and customer satisfaction is reflected by return clientele and numerous awards won over the years. In the past year they have won the South Coast Eco tourism Award and Certificate of
Excellence from Trip Advisor in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Cat Balou is a stable 16mt catamaran licensed to carry 72 passengers, however they limit their numbers to around 60 so everyone has plenty of room to move about. There is inside seating for all passengers and the upper deck and large bow area provide excellent viewing and photo opportunities. A live commentary is given throughout and complimentary refreshments including hot soup are provided. Unlike most of the other ports in the area there is direct ocean access from the port of Eden with no sand bars to cross, therefore passengers are not required to wear life jackets. At the start of the season it is mainly adults and sub adult Humpback whales that are seen, frequently feeding which is an awesome experience and possibly the only place in the world that Humpbacks feed on their migratory route. Later in the season, mother/calf pods travel closer to shore, quite often stopping in Twofold Bay with opportunities to
watch them from shore. Seals and dolphins plus many species of sea birds are usually seen on the cruises. On selected afternoons Cat Balou also offer their 2hr Twofold Bay Discovery Cruises. This cruise explores the southern section of Twofold Bay, viewing Boyd’s Tower, Edrom Lodge, Boydtown, the woodchip mill, naval wharf and fishing fleet. If whales are within the bay it’s an added bonus! For bookings and timetables for all cruises Ph 0427 260 489 or 0427 962 027. New exhibition explores role of Royal Australian Navy in WWI One hundred years ago, on 14th September 1914, Australia’s first submarine AE1 disappeared while patrolling the seas near present day New Guinea. No trace of the vessel or its 35 hands has ever been found to this day. This story is part of an eight-panel pop up banner display at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, opening this September. The experiences of Australian sailors in World War I has largely been overshadowed by the stories of soldiers on the Western Front or at Gallipoli. This

Australian National Maritime Museum travelling exhibition draws on the personal accounts of Navy servicemen – to tell their incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice amidst the drudgery of life at sea, patrolling, blockading and escorting troopships. The mystery of what happened to AE1 is explored alongside the story of Australia’s second submarine AE2, which became the first Allied vessel to breach the Dardanelles in Turkey, disrupting the Turkish forces moving to defend the Gallipoli peninsular in April 1915, and the story of the RAN Bridging Trains at the Gallipoli campaign. Australian National Maritime Museum director Kevin Sumption reflected on the importance of the new exhibition in telling the full story of Australia in
World War I: “Australia’s involvement in the First World War was a defining moment in our nation’s history, helping form many of the ideas of national identity we still have today,” he said. The banner display is made possible with the assistance of the Australia Council and Visions Australia: Regional Exhibition and Touring Fund. It is proudly supported by presenting partner, the Returned and Services League of Australia. The War at Sea – the Navy in WWI banner display is open from 8th September - 18th October 2015.

Visit Marine Discovery Centre during Eden's Whale Festival October sees the middle of the official whale watching season here on the far south coast, and while the whales are still heading south, Eden celebrates these great creatures with the community run event, the annual Eden Whale Festival. During the weekend of October 31st and November 1st, the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre will be open on both days (see website for opening hours as they may differ from the norm). Come in and check out our new and exciting custom built Touch Tank and the incredible array of marine critters living inside. These animals are only a small selection of some of the amazing diversity found on our coast and we can tell you all
about them while you hold them in the palms of your hand! During the Festival weekend while the centre is open, come in and learn about the large marine mammals like dolphins and whales found in the region and learn about the smaller marine creatures that hide in our local rockpools. You might like to do some whale-inspired arts and crafts to take home, read the incredible true tale of a man who survived being swallowed by a shark, or if you dare, enter the very deep and dark Deep Sea Exhibit; climb aboard our Octopod 9 and descend to the bottom of the sea! There is so much to see and do in this hands-on and interactive marine discovery
centre that you will want to spend all day in here! The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre is truly an exciting place to immerse yourself in and discover – and we can show you how. www.sapphirecoastdiscovery.com.au Below: Checking out the new Touch Tank

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage
of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an oldfashioned milkbar.

Merimbula Lake & Jetty, Merimbula Š Paul Callaghan
Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

This month there are thousands of Humpback Whales migrating south along the eastern coast of Australia. The pristine waters off Merimbula are one of their most sensational playgrounds. Our vessels "True Blue" and "Sensational" have been whale watching in Sydney over winter, and we have observed thousands of humpbacks on their northern migration. All these whales are now heading south, bringing their young calves with them! Launched in May this year, "Sensational" is the Sapphire Coast's newest and fastest whale watching

Whale Watching on the Far South Coast The Far South Coast is one of the best places in Australia to go whale watching as there are plenty of choices that don't involve hours of travel. If you're keen to get out on the water, you're spoilt for choice. In Eden, Cat Balou offer a range of whale watching charters around the beautiful Twofold Bay. Ros and Gordon Butt have been operating Cat Balou Cruises since 1987 and are the most experienced whale watching operators in NSW. If you're in Merimbula, Merimbula Marina, Headland Charters and Reel Affair all offer whale watching cruises.
Merimbula Marina have two boats that follow the whales up to Sydney, then make the return trip as whales migrate south. Headland Charters and Reel Affair offer a more intimate experience with a maximum of 8 - 10 people on board. In Narooma, both Narooma Charters and Island Charters combine whale watching with tours of Montague Island to see seal and penguin colonies. Prices vary depending on the time spent out on the water, but charter outfits offer a fantastic highly educational experience, as they

comply with NPWS standards. If water isn't your thing, Merimbula Air Services can get you airborne for a whale watching experience of a different kind. You can cruise up and down the coast to get a sense of just how many whales pass by the coast on their southern migration. If land-based whale watching suits best, visit your favourite headland with binoculars and a chair, and keep scanning the horizon for water spouts. Whales have even been seen just off the beach at Tathra, in Merimbula Bay and in the port of Eden. You don't have to go too far, you just have to be lucky!

Tilba Living History
Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.
My Heaven On Earth A home-like feeling cafe right at the entry to beautiful Tilba. The food is home-made, and mostly sourced from the local district, so come in and enjoy hand made middle eastern tapas, dips, local cheese platters by South Coast Cheese, smoked meat by the local butcher and lots of yummy sweets served with local jersey cream. As recently featured on the television show River Cottage, we aim to create food selections to suit all needs Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free or plain carnivore. My Heaven On Earth is a great place to relax, with great coffee and a wide selection of teas by Orits Tea, some of the finest organic teas handmade on the far south coast. Come and have a cheese platter on the deck on Sundays with live music. Or book in for our popular Friday dinners. Open 7 days a week, like us on Facebook. Wagonga Inlet, Narooma © Paul Callaghan
Narooma Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet, and it's also the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean. Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National

The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. It's also a great place to go bike riding, with a tracks around town that are perfect for kids to practice. If you're a hard-core bike enthusiast, there are mountain bike tracks and sealed roads aplenty to check out. If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore.

Island Charters offer new tour this October Chris and Cecilia of Island Charters Narooma have been busy creating new tours that explore their favourite places. Their newest trip is an exploration of Central Tilba and surrounds. This bus tour starts off with a stroll through the historic village of Central Tilba with its quaint and quirky shops. Head to the historic ABC Cheese Factory for a short talk and a cheese tasting, followed by a drink of your choice. A quick bus ride takes you to the Tilba Valley Winery for wine tasting, a light platter selection and a relaxing afternoon, then it's back to your accommodation. Another popular tour is the “Meal With A Seal” trip - cruise around Montague Island
checking out all the favourite haunts of Australian and New Zealand fur seals. Enjoy the region’s finest produce for lunch, including fresh oysters, fish, locally smoked bacon and Tilba’s famous cheese. Round off the day with a guided snorkel tour for the best possible interaction with seals (the “puppies of the sea”) followed by a guided tour of the Montague Island Lighthouse. Or you can learn about the

Get on your bike in Narooma Staying in Narooma? Looking to explore the town? Jump on a bike (hire one if you don't have one with you) and try out these cycle tracks. They offer spectacular views of Narooma, Wagonga Inlet and Gulaga (Mt Dromedary), no monster hills and plenty of stops along the way to take a break. Apex Park to Australia Rock Return distance 8km. Easy grade. Child-friendly The ride begins at Apex Park, on the north side of Wagonga Inlet and follows the Mill Bay Boardwalk to the Bridge, then travels around the
shoreline of the inlet past Rotary Park and the playground to Australia Rock. The Mill Bay Boardwalk is built over the water and you can often see fish and large stingrays in the spectacular turquoise water. There are playgrounds along the way, with easy detours for ice cream stops. Take care once you pass Rotary Park as the road is narrow and children need to be closely supervised. At Bar Lookout, there are viewing platforms and a stairway leading to the southern breakwater. From Bar Lookout, there are views over to the golf course to the south, and the beaches and headlands to the north towards the villages of Dalmeny.
Forsters Bay to Northern Breakwater Return distance 6km. Easy grade. Child-friendly Start from the marinas on Forsters Bay and head toward the Bridge. This easy ride passes the Quota International Sensory Garden and has great views over Forsters Bay. After crossing the Bridge, head along to the Mill Bay Boardwalk, before reaching the breakwater. The rock wall is a good place to sit and take in the views across the water. Batemans Bay
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.
The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. Head north to Durras Lake for a spot of fishing, bushwalk in the Murramarang National Park or say hello to the kangaroos at Pebbly Beach.
