September Welcome to spring on the Far South Coast; it's September and that means the humpbacks are here! Actually, some whales decided to come early this year on their journey south to the feeding grounds of the Antarctic, with sightings at the beginning of August; they must know when they're on to a good thing! There are plenty of options for whale watching; you can go out on a whale watching cruise, a charter boat, fly along the coast in a plane or hang out on the nearest headland or cliff top. If you're at the beach and you're really lucky, you can sometimes see whales just 100 metres or so offshore! The Far South Coast is one of the best places to go whale watching in Australia; you don't have to travel far at all to see humpback whales plus other species including southern right, minke and false killer whales. Check page 14
for more information. Other things to do include the South Coast Field Days, held in the Bega Showground on the 12th - 13th September. Learn about sustainable living from people who live and breathe it every day. Check page 22 for all the details. On the weekend 26th-27th September is the Pambula Motorfest at the Pambula Beach Sporting Complex. With trade stalls, merchandise trucks, a massive kids zone, street machines, hot rods, vintage, motorbikes, trucks, utes, 4x4's, vans; head to page 9 for all the details. From 29th August to 12th September take yourself back to the Hollywood of old with Spectrum Theatre Group's fantastic production that takes a sneak peak at the backstage world of 'Gone With the Wind'. Page 12 has the details.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
2
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

New exhibition explores role of Royal Australian Navy in WWI One hundred years ago, on 14th September 1914, Australia’s first submarine AE1 disappeared while patrolling the seas near present day New Guinea. No trace of the vessel or its 35 hands has ever been found to this day. This story is part of an eight-panel pop up banner display at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, opening this September. The experiences of Australian sailors in World War I has largely been overshadowed by the stories of soldiers on the Western Front or at Gallipoli. This Australian National Maritime Museum travelling exhibition draws on the personal accounts of Navy servicemen – to tell their incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice amidst
the drudgery of life at sea, patrolling, blockading and escorting troopships. The mystery of what happened to AE1 is explored alongside the story of Australia’s second submarine AE2, which became the first Allied vessel to breach the Dardanelles in Turkey, disrupting the Turkish forces moving to defend the Gallipoli peninsular in April 1915, and the story of the RAN Bridging Trains at the Gallipoli campaign. Australian National Maritime Museum director Kevin Sumption reflected on the importance of the new exhibition in telling the full story of Australia in World War I: “Australia’s involvement in the First World War was a defining moment in our nation’s history, helping form many of the ideas of national

identity we still have today,” he said. The banner display is made possible with the assistance of the Australia Council and Visions Australia: Regional Exhibition and Touring Fund. It is proudly supported by presenting partner, the Returned and Services League of Australia. The War at Sea – the Navy in WWI banner display is open from 8th September - 18th October 2015. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage
of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a wine bar selling locally made wines and local produce, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an oldfashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts
of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue.

Whale Watching on board True Blue, Merimbula Š Wayne Reynolds
Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during January as well as the annual Jazz Festival in June. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Whale Watching on the Far South Coast The Far South Coast is one of the best places in Australia to go whale watching. You don't have to travel very far to find whales, and once you find them, chances are you'll see more than one species. If you're keen to get out on the water, there are lots of options depending in where you are. In Eden, Cat Balou offer a range of whale watching charters around the beautiful Twofold Bay. Ros and Gordon Butt have been operating Cat Balou Cruises since 1987 and are the most experienced whale watching operators in NSW.
If you're in Merimbula, Merimbula Marina, Headland Charters and Reel Affair all offer whale watching cruises. Merimbula Marina have two boats that follow the whales up to Sydney, then make the return trip as whales migrate south. Headland Charters and Reel Affair offer a more intimate experience with a maximum of 8 - 10 people on board. In Narooma, both Narooma Charters and Island Charters combine whale watching with tours of Montague Island to see seal and penguin colonies. Prices vary depending on the time
and

spent out on the water, but charter outfits offer a fantastic experience, as they comply with NPWS standards for whale watching, and are highly educational. If you come across a whale whilst out on your own vessel (powered boat or a kayak), don't forget you must keep a minimum 100m between your vessel and a whale; it's okay for the whale to approach you, but not for you to approach the whale (read the regulations at www.environment.nsw. gov.au/animals/whaleregulation.htm) If water isn't your thing, Merimbula Air Services can get you airborne for a whale watching experience of a different kind. You can cruise up and down the coast to get a sense of just how many whales pass by the coast on their southern migration. If land-based whale watching suits best, visit your favourite headland with binoculars and a chair, and keep scanning the horizon for water spouts. Whales have even been seen just off the beach at Tathra, in Merimbula Bay and in the port of Eden. You don't have to go too far, you just have to be lucky!

Tilba Living History
Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Moruya Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the BrinjaYuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town. European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851. Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete. Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in Hyde Park. These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.

Batemans Bay
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.
The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. Head north to Durras Lake for a spot of fishing, bushwalk in the Murramarang National Park or say hello to the kangaroos at Pebbly Beach.
