From the Editor

During the coming months, visitors and locals alike have a wonderful array of events to attend or participate in, as this very diverse and rich area offers up its best. In mid January, the Illawarra Folk Club will hold its annual Folk Festival, offering an eclectic mix of music from a variety of cultures and styles. Participate and enjoy a real ‘Aussie' day out this year when Berrima celebrates Australia Day in style once again! Lots of fun, entertainment and market stalls, plus the usual parade and awards ceremony will make this event a day not to be missed. If you love a good old fashioned country show, then you can look forward to the Robertson and Moss Vale Shows. These events have all the excitement of large regional shows with the usual line up of interesting agricultural attractions, as well as novelty events and sideshows. Don’t miss the Rose Festival in Goulburn in March. This festival will feature rose displays, bus tours of the public rose gardens, an art exhibition and demonstrations. Stalls will include craft stalls and jewellery. If art excites you check out the exhibitions at Wollongong Gallery and Gallery on Track in Goulburn. As well, music lovers can take the oportunity to enjoy the latest concert by the Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra in March. We have two more outdoor events for you in the coming months; Thirlmere comes alive with the Festival of Steam in March and Moss Vale will host the Small Farms Field Day in February. Both events promise to have something to interest the whole family.

The Best Country Rose Show in Australia The Goulburn Rose Festival is in its 23rd year and will be held on the weekend of 12-13 March 2016, at the Goulburn Soldiers’ Club. The title of ‘Goulburn - City of Roses’ was registered in 1994 and the ‘City of Goulburn’ rose was introduced in the same year. The 2016 Rose Festival is adopting as its theme this year, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Organisers are predicting even more than the usual fun and energy in the floral displays, and in the floral art competitions. A key part of the Festival is the hotly-contested rose and floral art competition with over $2,000 in prizes. The competition has categories for all - novices, clubs and serious rosarians. Along with the rose displays there will be an exhibition by the Goulburn & District Art Society with artwork for sale. The Goulburn Handweavers & Spinners will also be there with an exhibition entitled ‘Love of Fibre’ with special guest exhibitor, Sherri Smith.

Festival features 170 acts The 31st Illawarra Folk Festival at Bulli Showground from January 14-17 has a lot to live up to, but organisers are confident that the 2016 festival will be one of the best yet Last January more than 11,500 music fans flocked to the 30th anniversary festival – a record - and organisers say that this year’s festival line-up will maintain the high standards that have made this one of the biggest folk festivals in the state. “We’ve got over 170 acts from all over the world and Australia playing in 13 venues over the four days of the festival,” Artistic Director David De Santi said. “Acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie McLean is returning after his very popular appearances at the 2012 festival, while other

Stalls have been specially selected and include local nurseries, hand-made jewellery, gardening tools, homewares, and others. The Rose Show is open from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 14 March, and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 15 March. Entry is $5, with children under 16, free. There are plenty of other things to ‘See & Do’ in Australia’s first inland city which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013. You might like to incorporate into your visit: Riversdale Homestead, a National Trust property; Goulburn Historic Waterworks Museum – which will be steaming on the Sunday; Goulburn Brewery – Australia’s oldest brewing complex; Garoorigang Homestead – a site of National Historic Significance and the Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre. For enquiries (including program and competition schedule) please phone the Visitors’ Information Centre on 1800 353 646, email goulburnrosefestival@gmail.com, or visit www.goulburnrosefestival.org.au, or find them on Facebook.

international acts include The Poozies from the UK and Beth Patterson from the US,” he said. The Australian artists include: • acclaimed Indigenous singer-songwriter Frank Yamma, a Pitjantjatjara man from central Australia who speaks five languages and sings in English and Pitjantjatjara; • Shane Howard who was the mainstay of 1980s folk-rock group Goanna; • Neil Murray, who wrote My Island Home; and • Ami Williamson, the multi-talented daughter of Australian music legend John Williamson. The festival will also feature poetry, comedy, music workshops and dance, as well as a wide variety of food stalls.

Goulburn Waterworks - Open & Steaming

The Goulburn Historic Waterworks, set on the banks of the picturesque Wollondilly River, is the only complete and operational steam powered water pumping station left in its original location in the Southern Hemisphere. The Victorian Georgian style Pumphouse, was completed in 1885, and houses the original 1883 Appleby Bros steam beam engine which has been fully restored and is a magnificent sight to see either as a static display or operating “under steam”.

Also, in the Pumphouse is a fully operational horizontal steam engine, built, 1866, by Hick, Hargreave & Co. These engines are scheduled to operate in 2016 on 14 February, 13 March, 17 April and 5 June . There is also a collection of model steam engines and various objects relating to steam and water supply. Interpretation panels provide information and photos of the history of the site. The Waterworks Fireman’s Cottage, which opened to the public in September 2015, was built in 1885 to house the fireman and his family. This building is now used as an office, volunteer area and for various exhibitions throughout the year. Tours available. There’s a picnic area, BBQ and playground. On “steaming days” The Pumphouse Café is opened offering refreshments. Marsden Weir, Goulburn Ph: 4823 4448

2015 has been a big year for Bowral’s newest gallery, Ten Thousand Paces. As they prepare for their summer exhibition, curator Hamish Ta-mé reflects on some of the milestones. “it’s almost as if the whole creative community was waiting for a gallery like this” Ta-mé says, “we have put on 25 shows in the exhibition space and shown over 60 artists, designers and crafters in the co-op space”. Alongside the visual arts, this year they have also been granted a liquor licence and now sell hundreds of wines from every local vineyard in the region. “ we are champions of regional excellence” Ta-mé explains, “all of our artists have to be local to exhibit with us, likewise all the wines are from the immediate region”. The name of the project, Ten Thousand Paces, relates to the distance that most of the artists live, work and build their creative communities. Ta-mé explains that they are looking to disrupt traditional approaches to the relationship between the artist, dealer and art lover. Run

along the lines of an old fashioned co-op, artists, makers, crafters and designers all pay a small weekly fee towards the cost of running the space. Everyone is “invested” in the success of the project. Director and curator Hamish Ta-mé is an artist himself with a long established exhibition history at significant institutions like the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. Passionate about regional creative communities and genuine creative careers, in 2015 he also ran the first of a mentor and intern program aimed at launching the careers of young designers and artists alongside established local artists. Open 7 days, Springetts, Arcade Bowral. Exhibition openings every two weeks and wine tastings and education sessions every Thursday afternoon. Berrima Celebrates Australia Day - Tuesday January 2016 The Australia Day Celebrations in historic Berrima, over the last 10 years, have grown to be one of the Southern Highlands premier tourist events. Visitor numbers are in the vicinity of 5000 to 8000 thousand every year and on the increase. What’s the attraction? Probably the location. No other village in the Southern Highlands can claim to have a more historic and picturesque backdrop in which to celebrate this day in our nations calendar of public holidays. With over 60-market stalls, local and interstate, and entertainment for all the family; grand parades, vintage cars, fire engine displays, fresh

produce markets and face painting; there is something for everyone. The atmosphere is one of a real Aussie family day out with a bit of patriotism and pride in our country thrown in for good measure. The official part of the day starts at the Historic Berrima Court House Museum at 9.30 am where young citizen and citizen of the year awards are given by the mayor of the shire. This is followed by an address by the Australia day ambassador. After the awards ceremony it’s off to enjoy the rest of the day to hunt for that allusive piece of craft either in the market square in the more traditional shops in Berrima.

Robertson Show 19 & 20 February There are so many highlights associated with Robertson’s annual show it’s hard to single out any particular event. From the moment the gates open until the spectacular fireworks display, this year’s show program promises to be one of the best ever presented with something for all members of the family. Over the two days, the spotlight will shine on the centre ring where horse and rider team up to impress the judges as they strive for the elusive championship ribbons. Early indications are that the Hindmarsh Pavilion will be a popular venue as patrons cast their eyes over a vast number of categories including craft, needlework, flowers and cakes. Don’t forget the high quality on exhibit with the Dairy and Beef cattle strutting their stuff 16 www.monthlyimag.com.au

while numbers in the poultry and dog sections have surpassed all expectations. Throw in a host of novelty events such as the Great Australian Potato Race, Demolition Derby, push bikes and Gig races, women’s pumpkin lawn bowls, weight judging competition, hay stacking and the unusual rides for those who like to be daring, while those wanting to test their appetite can enter the pie eating competition. Old timers will be able to recall memories of the past when the Berrima District Old Machinery Club promotes an intriguing range of machines from days gone by. Whatever tickles your fancy rest assured you will find it at this year’s Robertson Show. Ph: 4885 1620 or 0488 428 776

Wollondilly is situated on the south western outskirts of Sydney and at the foothills of the Southern Highlands. It is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures in an area that relies on dairying and mixed farming. It takes in Bargo in the south, Appin and Menangle in the east, Warragamba in the north, Yerranderie Ghost Town and the Burragorang Valley to the west. Historic Picton was originally called Stonequarry and was in fact a private town in the early 19C. It has a number of notable historic sites; Vault Hill, owned by an early settler Henry Antill, the old courthouse, built in 1864, a Victorian 20 www.monthlyimag.com.au

Wirrimbirra Sanctuary, which is set in 200 acres of bushland, is a National Trust (NSW) property and is located between Bargo and Tahmoor. There are native animals, a native plant nursery, picnic tables and a Gift Shop. Trainworks in Thirlmere, is a magical place to visit for the enthusiast and the young at heart. Step back in time to an era when everyone travelled by train. There are over 40 locomotives and 80 carriages on display, dating from 1865. As well, there is an exhibition of railway items and memorabilia, a signals display, an authentic fettler’s shed, and a heritage-listed 1880s railway station.

The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had

Bundanoon. Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Historic Berrima Things to See & Do Berrima Courthouse

Berrima District Museum Berrima Goal Berrima River Walk VISITOR INFORMATION Southern Highlands Info Centre 62 - 70 Main St, Mittagong Ph: 1300 657 559 www.southern-highlands.com.au

Berrima is a historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. It is a favourite destination for Sydneysiders, Illawarra and Canberra residents and has exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. In the 19thC, the township was destined to become the main town of the Southern Highlands, but when the railway line was built through Moss Vale in the 1860s, it faded to a sleepy village. The first Europeans to investigate the area 3 2 www.monthlyimag.com.au

were sent by the colonial governor, Governor Hunter. With a water supply provided by the nearby Wingecarribee River, a town plan, in the manner of an English village, was laid out by Robert Hoddle. Few substantial houses were built, although by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the Surveyor-General Inn, in the centre of town, is the longest licensed hotel in NSW. By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage, so the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village by the National Trust. The most interesting period in the history of Berrima is perhaps when it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs during WW1. This complete story can be found at Berrima District Museum as well as many other local history stories. After visiting the Museum (located on the right at the southern end of the village opposite the park) take the Berrima River Walk to understand the impact of the POWs had on the town. Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal people meaning ‘Black Swan’. The Dharawal were displaced in the area by farming and grazing interests and were rarely seen by the 1870s.
