From the Editor July This month we have the usual array of offerings designed to enhance your visit to our area. Enjoy the buzz at one of our local markets where you can purchase local produce, grab a coffee or just soak up the atmosphere. If you are interested in art, you can visit a gallery or spend some time in one of our many museums and get a feel for the history here. We have a Wine Trail for those who enjoy the finer things that life has to offer and of course our 'What's On' section will provide you with enough events to keep you busy for the entire month. Whether you are a resident or a visitor to our region you are likely to find the Southern Highlands and surrounding towns and villages not only culturally stimulating but vibrant and beautiful.

July is one of our coldest months so rug up and don't let the cold weather dampen your enthusiasm for tasting what we have on offer. One for the diary: Camden Quota International will host the annual Antique Fair early in August. The Fair will have up to thirty dealers who will bring top quality furniture, jewellery, porcelain, artefacts, linen and lace, and collectable items to the Fair. This is an event that raises money for charities so enjoy the event whilst supporting worthy causes in our community. Full details can be found on page 2 so place this event on your calendar for August. As you travel throughout our region, be sure to carry your iMag with you. Have a safe and happy stay!

Camden, Narellan, Campbelltown Macarthur - the best of both worlds! Where can you find a vibrant city with modern delights, enjoy the tranquillity of nature reserves and historic charm, but also revel in adrenalin packed activities. Macarthur is less than an hour’s drive south-west of Sydney and includes the cities of Campbelltown and historic Camden. Throughout the region, the history of colonial settlement is reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings; Camden Park House and Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area. The Macarthur district played a significant role in the birth of the Australian Wool, Wine and Wheat industries. History books tell us that John Macarthur was responsible for our success as producers of fine Merino Wool, but historical records show that Elizabeth Macarthur, his wife, played a larger role than he did. John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW. Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including a number of small boutique art

galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur. Macarthur is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers. The beauty of the nature reserves and wildlife trails will surprise and delight with spectacular flowing streams, rock escarpments and native flora and fauna. For a superb day out, visit one of Macarthur's most interesting attractions; Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan offers a lovely family day out in the midst of 416 hectares of Australian bushland. The facility includes picnic areas, a restaurant, over 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a native flora research facility and NSW Seedbank.

Picton, Thirlmere, Bargo, Appin Wollondilly is a popular destination for a Tree Change or holiday. The area features Razorback Range, Burragorang Valley and towns like Picton, Appin, Thirlmere and Warragamba. Wollondilly, on the south western outskirts of Sydney and at the foothills of the Southern Highlands, is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures. As you drive across the bridge over the Wingecarribee River near Moss Vale, you’ll see a concrete path winding across the paddock. This walk and bike way is a 4.5 km walk to Burradoo. From the roadway it looks a bit ‘so what’, but once you’re on the path you might even wonder if you haven’t stepped onto one of those English rural footpaths which meanders by the river, past and through farmland. Around about midway on the walk you pass a section of the river where the scene resembles one of Constable’s paintings.

If you take the walk at weekends, you might find the antics of tiny aeroplanes operated by the members of the model aeroplane club. entertaining. The path is measured in 500 metre lots so you know how far you’ve gone or when it’s time to turn back. Take a bottle of water with you, and if it’s a sunny day, you’ll need a hat. There’s no shade on this pathway. There is a carpark near the bridge where the monument to Bong Bong, the first Southern Highlands settlement, is located. Where to find the walk? Look for the open land at the northern end of Moss Vale near the bridge.

Historic Berrima

Berrima & Moss Vale

www.highlandsimag.com.au

Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

18 www.monthlyimag.com.au

Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Robertson Potato Farm

Robertson

www.highlandsimag.com.au

The green heart of the Highlands Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands. In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station in landscaped gardens. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft and collectables. The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive. There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes. Robbo Spuds are always on sale in season (December to April). All this and more in a picturesque village where people are friendly, parking is easy and there is a genuine country town atmosphere.

Nearby are three of the longest drop waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Barren Grounds nature reserve has wonderful wild flowers and easy plateau walks to coastal views. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama. Further afield you can find Fitzroy Falls which offers scenery on a grand scale. Waterfalls, sandstone cliffs, lush rainforest gullies and sweeping views of the escarpment are a good reason for visitors to include this area in your tour of the Southern Highlands. There are several walks to choose from; a timber boardwalk to the falls, or for the more adventuresome a 7km walk into a rainforest gully. The Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre is open seven days and provides a range of information on Morton National Park and other places to visit in the area. The Falls Café offers a selection of tasty home cooked meals or simply coffee and cake in a bush environment. Barbecue facilities, toilets, picnic shelters all with disabled access. Open seven (7) days per week 9am to 5pm. (02) 4887 7270. Park Use fee applies.

Historic Homes in Goulburn

Goulburn

www.highlandsimag.com.au

Australia’s first inland city Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and hospitality. The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest. The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards. By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise. In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products. St Saviour's Cathedral 1874 to 1884 - one of the finest white sandstone cathedrals in the Southern Hemisphere. The splendid bell-tower, soaring windows and massive stone work are the first impressions one has of the building. The Cathedral and Hall were

designed by Edmund T. Blackett at the peak of his career. The Forster and Andrews organ contained 43 stops and 2252 pipes when installed but has been modified several times since. It is regarded as one of the best pipe organs in Australia and one of the most sought after by organists. Ph: 4821 2206 Goulburn Historic Waterworks - a part of Australia's heritage The Goulburn Historic Waterworks is located on the banks of the Wollondilly River. It has fully operational steam engines; the 1883 Appleby Bros. beam engine and the 1860s Hick Hargreaves corliss valve engine. The beam engine dates to the 1880s when it was installed to pump water for Goulburn. The Waterworks is of national significance as it is the only complete, workable, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location in the Southern Hemisphere. It is steaming again after an absence of over two years due to essential maintenance on the boiler. The Pumphouse Café serves locally produced meals and has a retro-style theme. Ph: 4823 4448 Riversdale Historic Homestead – a historic 1830s Inn Riversdale was purchased in 1875 by Edward Twynam who later became Surveyor General of NSW. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1967 from the Twynam family and is set in beautiful flowering gardens. The Inn is furnished as a mid-19th century colonial cottage. It is an ideal venue to just have a picnic or to book a function, a wedding or a christening. Mob: 0414 951 955
