Macarthur
www.highlandsimag.com.au
Camden, Narellan, Campbelltown Macarthur - the best of both worlds! Where can you find a vibrant city with modern delights, enjoy the tranquillity of nature reserves and historic charm, but also revel in adrenalin packed activities. Macarthur is less than an hour’s drive south-west of Sydney and includes the cities of Campbelltown and historic Camden. Throughout the region, the history of colonial settlement is reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings; Camden Park House and Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area. The Macarthur district played a significant role in the birth of the Australian Wool, Wine and Wheat industries. History books tell us that John Macarthur was responsible for our success as producers of fine Merino Wool, but historical records show that Elizabeth Macarthur, his wife, played a larger role than he did. John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW. Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including
a number of small boutique art galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur. Macarthur is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers. The beauty of the nature reserves and wildlife trails will surprise and delight with spectacular flowing streams, rock escarpments and native flora and fauna. For a superb day out, visit one of Macarthur's most interesting attractions; Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan offers a lovely family day out in the midst of 416 hectares of Australian bushland. The facility includes picnic areas, a restaurant, over 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a native flora research facility and NSW Seedbank. provide the opportunity to view the domestic and social history of the Campbelltown area through the many photos and artifacts displayed in this beautiful Georgian townhouse which was built in 1840. The Macarthur Progressive Wine Luncheon is on Sunday 10 November. Three of Macarthur’s wineries – Fussy Grape, Trattoria La Vigna and Razorback Ridge – have grouped together to offer this self-drive, threecourse, progressive lunch. The day will begin at 11.30 with canapes at Fussy Grape, followed by the main course at Trattoria La Vigna and dessert at Razorback Ridge. Designated drivers will go into a draw to enjoy a bottle of wine at home. On 19 November, Australia’s favourite American comedian, Arj Barker, heads into town as part of this ‘Go Time’
standup comedy tour. According to Arj, the show is both ‘what audiences expect from me and the last thing they expect from me, which if my calculations are correct, will make for a great show’. Conclude the month with a rush of adrenalin as for the third consecutive year the JetBlack 24 Hour Mountain Bike Endurance Race will be held at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan. In addition to watching the highly contested race, on from 30 November until 1 December, spectators can enjoy live music, entertainment, giveaways and more. Countdown to Festival Sparks Ghost Fever
Seeing ghosts? The residents of Campbelltown in Sydney’s south west certainly are after celebrating the legend of Fisher’s Ghost for more than half a century through an annual festival that has become an intrinsic part of the city itself. Ghost fever is everywhere – from the local pie shop, to the library, schools and community groups. There is no escaping the legend and everyone is invited to join in the spirit of one of Australia’s longest running community celebrations. The annual festival boasts a jampacked program of events and
activities to suit all ages and interests over 10 huge days from 1 to 10 November. All the festival favourites make a spectacular return, including the Street Parade, Fisher’s Gig, Street Fair, carnival and fireworks, Fisher’s Kids, Craft Exhibition and the Marsdens Law Group Fisher’s Ghost Fun Run. The Street Parade on 2 November promises to shine bright as it celebrates the theme ‘Spring Colour’, and invites everyone to choose a colour, or wear them all. There’ll be excitement galore at the carnival in Bradbury Oval over two huge weekends, which features a dazzling fireworks display on both Saturday nights of the event. A host of new carnival attractions and rides will cater for a range of ages and tastes – from families to seasoned thrill seekers. Acclaimed local and national performers will bring their music to Bradbury Oval on 2 November for the region’s biggest all ages outdoor

concert – Fisher’s Gig. The large-scale, local youth event has fast earned a reputation for launching the careers of young musicians across Macarthur. Kids can engage in artistic fun at Campbelltown Arts Centre on Sunday 3 November for the Fisher’s Kids extravaganza, which this year features oodles of imaginative and resourceful ways for kids aged three to 12 to unleash their creativity. More than 80 stalls, stage entertainment and a dedicated kids’ zone featuring the CSIRO Discovery Dome and circus tricks, will leave event-goers spoilt for choice at the Street Fair when it descends on Mawson Park and Queen Street on 9 November. The Festival of Fisher’s Ghost reflects Campbelltown’s strong sense of community spirit, and everyone is invited to celebrate one of the greatest ghost stories of all time. Growth of Renwick Sees the Appointment of Community Facilitator UrbanGrowth NSW (formerly Landcom) has appointed a community facilitator to service the growing number of residents now living at the Renwick land development near Mittagong. Emma-Jayne Gardiner has begun work to help residents meet each other and feel at home in the burgeoning community. “As more residents move into their completed homes at Renwick, EmmaJayne will develop and implement a welcome program that will help residents settle into the area and meet their neighbours,” said UrbanGrowth NSW General Manager for Corporate Marketing, Robert Sullivan. “UrbanGrowth NSW is dedicated to creating communities so EmmaJayne’s role will be vital in nurturing a strong sense of community at Renwick as it expands,” said Mr Sullivan. “Since m - 5p ay m D a 10 tmas PEN hris iday

the first land release at Renwick in August, 2011, over 150 lots have been sold, underlining the strong appeal of this masterplanned community.” The Renwick Sales Centre, located on Renwick Drive in Mittagong, is open Friday to Monday from 10am to 5pm or visit www.landcom.com.au/renwick. Seven display homes are open to the public at Renwick. Renwick is a 600-lot residential development in the NSW Southern Highlands 130km from Sydney. When completed, it will feature a village centre and walking and cycling paths, with a third of the 115-hectare site retained as open space and parks.
Lake Alexandra
Reserve Park & Garden Lake Alexandra in Mittagong Township is a man - made lake, originally a dam, which was constructed to provide a reliable supply of water to operate the works for the Fitzroy Bessemer Steel and Hematite Coal Company in the 19C. A park - like reserve surrounds the lake and an abundance of birdlife live on the water and shores. Undercover BBQ and playground facilities are on site as the area has recently undergone a revamp. Lake Alexandra Reserve is 2000 ha in area (5,000 acres) and includes Box Vale Walking Track, Nattai Loop Track, Forty Foot Falls, Yellow Track, and Green Track & Red Track. Walking maps are available from Southern Highlands Tourism. This family attraction is accessible at all times and is an unexpected delight in the midst of a major town in the Southern Highlands. Historic Berrima
Berrima & Moss Vale
www.highlandsimag.com.au
Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

If you are looking for absolute quietness and the privacy of your own cottage set in hundreds of acres in the Southern Highlands - then The Pines Pastoral is the ultimate choice. Guests stay in stunningly restored country buildings, with a choice between three classic cottages: Platypus Cottage which was originally a dairy, or Possums Cottage - a traditional Australian farmhouse with broad verandahs, or Sugarglider Cottage, which rises like a small chapel on top of its ridge. For those who appreciate unusual architecture, the modernist structure of Blue Wren and Brown Thornbill is a must. The Pines Pastoral is a cattle farm set in the prettiest part of the Southern Highlands. The hills and valleys have a friendly size for inviting walks. Every window opens on to a postcard landscape. Located 1 hour 20 minutes from Sydney (M5) and 10 minutes from Moss Vale and Bowral. Morton National Park is 5 minutes away. Private group and exclusive conferences can be arranged and we cater for wedding accommodation for groups. Visit local towns and villages, galleries,
bookshops, cafes, restaurants and boutique shopping. Picturesque Robertson
Robertson Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands. In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe. The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the

Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive. There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes. Nearby are three of the longest drop waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Barren Grounds nature reserve has wonderful wild flowers and easy plateau walks to coastal views. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama.

Antiques in Robertson Village The 23rd and 24th November 2013 will again see the School of Arts Hall at Robertson transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine for the Fifth Annual Robertson Antiques and Collectables Fair. Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to many different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care
and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector. The Robertson Antiques Fair will be a bonanza for the village with a great number of tourists visiting the fair and also visiting many local attractions such as our three local waterfalls, the Illawarra Fly treetop walk, the Robertson Heritage Railway Station Gallery , the Village Woodworks that also incorporates the Robertson Guild art and craft display. After your visit to the Antiques Fair there is still plenty to do in the village such as browsing through the shops selling antiques, arts and crafts, paintings, books, foodstuffs and local produce. Why not visit one of the many cafes for morning / afternoon tea or lunch.
Events like the fair are important to the School of Arts Committee who rely on income from these functions to maintain the hall. During the fair the ladies from the hall committee will be serving light lunches and morning/ afternoon teas. The Robertson Antiques Fair will be open to the public from 9am until 5pm on Saturday 23rd November and from 10am until 3pm on Sunday 24th November. Admission is $6 for adults and includes a lucky door prize ticket. Accompanied children are free. There is plenty of parking nearby and wheelchair access into the hall. The Robertson School of Arts is situated on the Illawarra Highway at Robertson, right in the centre of the village. For further information please call Mick Dalton on mobile 0428 446 534.
