From the Editor

Autumn is a most delightful time to visit the Southern Highlands region and an ideal time to attend all of the shows and festivals happening over the coming months. Music lovers will enjoy the Bowral Autumn Music Festival when Bowral hosts this annual event in March. As well, gardeners can mark the Rose Festival in Goulburn as an event to attend in March. This festival will feature rose displays, bus tours of the public rose gardens, an art exhibition, demonstrations and market stalls. If you love a good old - fashioned country show, then we have four on offer over the coming months; Robertson, Moss Vale, Camden and Goulburn Shows will provide all the excitement of large regional shows with the usual line up of interesting agricultural attractions as well as novelty events and sideshows. An annual ‘standout’ festival in the Southern Highlands is Brigadoon in Bundanoon. The gathering of the clans means that festivities will include a street parade, massed pipe bands, dancing, games, displays and more. Bundanoon celebrates 150 yrs in 2015 so join the festivities throughout the year. The Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair is on again early in May and promises to be a draw card for collectors, both serious and novice. Coincidently, 5 May is a day in our region when we celebrate the pumpkin and the apple. The Collector Village will hold its annual Pumpkin Festival and Tallong will hold its Apple Day. Both events promise to be family friendly, with lots of fun, food and entertainment. There is plenty to chose from over the coming months - so enjoy!

Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan There is so much to explore at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, the largest botanic garden in the country. The recently opened Australian PlantBank is an internationally significant centre for plant research and learning, incorporating the largest native plant conservation seedbank in Australia. Seed or plant material from all 25,000 Australian native plant species will progressively be deposited into the Australian PlantBank. Seeds come in many shapes and sizes, but inside each one is a tiny embryo. Scientists at the Australian PlantBank investigate how different seeds germinate and develop into

adult plants, leading to a better understanding of how plants regenerate and survive. This knowledge is used in the horticultural and agricultural industries and assists in the restoration of damaged ecosystems. Visit the Australian PlantBank and discover more about the wonderful world of plants. PlantBank is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Free volunteer guided tours of this amazing facility are offered on selected days, including weekends. Ph: 4634 7935 for tour information. Entry is free. Open daily (except for Christmas Day) from 10am to 5pm and is located off Narellan Road, Mount Annan. www.highlandsimag.com.au 17

Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair 2 & 3 May Saturday 2nd May and Sunday 3rd May 2015 will see the Bowral Memorial Hall transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when around twenty dealers from all around the country combine for the 28th Southern Highlands Antiques Fair. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, this event has become a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike. Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to twenty different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help

the collector. The Southern Highlands Antiques Fair is a major fundraiser for the Bowral and District Hospital Auxiliary who will provide delicious light lunches and morning and afternoon teas throughout the weekend of the fair, as well as a raffle and a stall selling delicious cakes, biscuits and jams. The Southern Highlands Antiques Fair is open to the public from 9:00am until 5:00pm on Saturday 2nd May and from 10:00am until 4:00pm on Sunday 3rd May. precinct with homewares, clothing, needlecraft, antiques, jewellery and health and beauty outlets. Indulge the tastebuds in one of the many cafes, restaurants, clubs and coffee houses. There are lots of walking trails around Mt Alexandra where you can explore the bush. The lookouts and walking trails on Mt. Gibraltar and Mt. Alexandra allow you to get close to nature, with abundant birdlife and wildlife. Mittagong is south west of Sydney in the Nattai River Valley between Mt Gibraltar, known locally as ‘The Gib’ and Mt Alexandra, both extinct volcanic peaks.

Bowral - home to the International Cricket Hall of Fame. Bowral is a most delightful country town situated in a valley at the foot of Mt.Gibraltar. Due to the high altitude of the Southern Highlands, the town enjoys gorgeous autumns as exotic European trees and shrubs change their colour in preparation for the winter months. >

The shopping precinct in Bowral has an atmosphere like that of few other country towns as it offers an eclectic variety of boutiques, bookstores, antique and craft shops, restaurants and cafes. Bowral is famous for its country gardens and fields of tulips in spring. Just 115 km southwest of Sydney, Bowral has always been a fashionable destination for Sydneysiders and day trippers. A highlight for cricket fans is the International Cricket Hall of Fame. Outdoor sports include flyfishing on the lake or golf at one of the town’s excellent courses. Bowral Lookout is well worth a visit. Spring is tulip time and the Bowral Tulip Festival runs from the end of September until early October.

A Camera on Gallipoli The Australian War Memorial’s travelling exhibition A camera on Gallipoli is now open at Berrima District Museum. A camera on Gallipoli showcases 39 candid World War I photographs captured by Sir Charles Ryan while serving with the Australian Imperial Force in Turkey in 1914-15. Ryan’s sensitivity, his empathy with those on both sides, and his eye for the remarkable – and the remarkable in the everyday – are apparent in his photographic work. These images take us behind the stirring accounts of battle at Gallipoli being reported at home

to reveal the dry, forbidding landscape, tired troops in the trenches, squalid dugouts, and the horrendous task of burying the dead. In this display of mateship, stoicism and dogged endurance, is the spirit of Anzac. Ryan led a remarkable life; he served from 1876 as a doctor with the Turkish army and temporarily became a Russian prisoner of war. He returned to Melbourne in 1878 and was commissioned as captain, Volunteer Medical Service. In 1880 he treated Ned Kelly and other injured at Glenrowan after police did battle with the bushranger’s gang. A Camera on Gallipoli will be on display every day, 10.00am to 4.00pm, at Berrima District Museum, beside the bridge at Berrima, until 22 March 2015.

Moss Vale holds a large part of the Southern Highlands Industry - as well as being a minor centre for agriculture, many light and medium industries are found in and around Moss Vale. townships and villages and to Highland attractions and only a short drive away. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had disappeared by the 1870s, partly due to the loss of their hunting land to European settlers.

a concrete path winding across the paddock. This walk and bike way is a 4.5 km walk to Burradoo. From the roadway it looks a bit ordinary but once you’re on the path you might even wonder if you haven’t stepped onto one of those English rural footpaths which meanders by the river, past and through farmland. Around about midway on the walk, you pass a section of the river where the scene resembles one of Constable’s paintings. The path is measured in 500 metre lots so you know how far you’ve gone or when it’s time to turn back. Take a bottle of water with you, and if it’s a sunny day, you’ll need a hat. There’s no shade on this pathway. There is a carpark near the bridge where the monument to Bong Bong, the first Southern Highlands settlement, is located. Where to find the walk? Look for the open land at the northern end of Moss Vale.

Bundanoon. Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Historic Berrima Things to See & Do Berrima Courthouse Museum Berrima District Museum Berrima Goal VISITOR INFORMATION Southern Highlands Info Centre 62 - 70 Main St, Mittagong Ph: 1300 657 559 www.southern-highlands.com.au

Berrima is a historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. It is a favourite destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents and has exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. In the 19thC, the township was destined to become the main town of the Southern Highlands, but when the railway line was built through Moss Vale in the 1860s, it faded to a sleepy village. 3 2 www.monthlyimag.com.au

The first Europeans to investigate the area were sent by the colonial governor, Governor Hunter. With a water supply provided by the nearby Wingecarribee River, a town plan, in the manner of an English village, was laid out by Robert Hoddle. Few substantial houses were built, although by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the Surveyor-General Inn, in the centre of town, is the longest licensed hotel in NSW. By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage, so the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village by the National Trust. The most interesting period in the history of Berrima is perhaps when it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs during WW1. The Courthouse Museum and Berrima Gaol are still two impressive sandstone buildings which every visitor must see. Until a few years ago the gaol was still used as a prison. Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal people meaning ‘Black Swan’. The Dharawal were displaced in the area by farming and grazing interests and were rarely seen by the 1870s.

Bundanoon - the place to be in 2015 Behind the village’s sleepy façade there’s an abundance of activity – and we want to share it with you! One of the oldest villages in the Highlands, Bundanoon owes its existence to the coming of the railway, and a visit to the historical Bundanoon Railway Station and the nearby The Old Goods Shed, which houses the History Group’s exhibitions, is a must. Of course, it’s still a working railway station used by locals and visitors who come to walk in Morton National Park which is easily accessed by foot from the village. With the events planned by interest groups and organisations to celebrate Bundanoon’s Sesquicentenary, everyone is sure to find something to enjoy, from exhibitions of needlework over the past 150 years, history tours, garden parties, musical events, fun in the Community Garden, bush dances, Christmas in July to our well known Winterfest and Brigadoon. Bundanoon will be hosting the

commemorative Kangaroo March late in 2015, which coincides with the Anzac Centenary. Take a step back in time, eat in the camp kitchen, sing songs from the past and learn about the young country boys who marched off to enlist in the Great War. Bundanoon is a vibrant community and there is much to enjoy – as our thousands of visitors over the past 150 years would tell you. Collector Village Pumpkin Festival - 3 May Sunday 3rd of May 2015 will not only be celebrated in Collector as the annual Pumpkin Festival day, but will also commemorate the 150th anniversary of the most colourful period in its history when Ben Hall and his gang of bushrangers roamed the countryside around Collector, holding up stage coaches and hundreds of travellers and homesteads. The bushranger theme will be carried throughout this year’s pumpkin festival with scarecrows sporting bushy beards and pumpkins carved like stage coaches instead of the traditional Cinderella type. For a real treat, visitors will be able to take a ride in a fully restored Cob & Co Coach that will be operating at the Collector Oval all day. Adjacent to the oval will be the return of the heritage machinery and classic car display with over ten regional clubs expected to have their best machines and vehicles on display. Over 100 market stalls will line the full length of Bourke Street from the Collector Oval to the Memorial Hall making for a colourful scene and offering a huge variety of food, beverage, art and craft, local produce and of course… pumpkins! Special activities for the children will include the hay bale maze and the scarecrow building competition as well as two free shows by popular Ex-Hooley Dooley performer; Antione (Ant1!!). Meanwhile, Regular entertainers Pat Drummond and Karen Lynne will be joined on stage by guest artists and bush poets for six hours of non-stop entertainment. With the region experiencing extraordinary

summer rainfall, records could be set to tumble in the iconic event of the festival; the Giant Pumpkin growing competition. Growers are remaining tight lipped about their prized vegetables but organisers are confident that last year’s winning weight of a 266.5 kg pumpkin entered by Robinson grower, Rick Downes, will be eclipsed this year by several entries. Of course, there will be no shortage of pumpkin soup and pumpkin scones that have made the event famous and nothing could taste better than a piping hot pumpkin pie on a brisk autumn day at Collector. So if you are looking for a great day out for all the family, lock in Sunday 3rd May for the Collector Village Pumpkin Festival. VISITOR INFORMATION Southern Highlands Info Centre 62 - 70 Main St, Mittagong Ph: 1300 657 559 www.southern-highlands.com.au

Robertson is the lushest of the Southern

Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. It could be said that this was due to the prevalence of landholders with an Irish background. Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies. Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to

50 www.monthlyimag.com.au

the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside. The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama. Robertson is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. The town is within easy reach of the surrounding towns of Berrima, Bowral, Bundanoon, Fitzroy Falls, Mittagong, Moss Vale and Sutton Forest, all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through the unique little shops and galleries.

Home – Income – Lifestyle – a tree changer’s special! Business Opportunity! One of the Southern Highlands‘ best known antique shops, Robertson Recollections, is up for sale. It’s a large shop known both for its variety and for its eclectic mix. Owners Dion and Micki Boehme opened at Easter 1996. For over 19 years their shop has become a landmark in the picturesque village of Robertson.

52 www.monthlyimag.com.au

But, now in their 70s, Dion & Micki think it’s time to wind down. “Robertson has been very good to us”, they say, “we came here as tree- changers, and still can’t quite believe we’ve been able to live stress-free in this beautiful green village, and also make a good living. “I think, there’s more to be made, too”, Dion says. “All these years, we’ve traded solely over the counter. There’s huge scope for increased sales, through a presence on the Web”. “We’ve found the lifestyle hard to beat”, they add. “We live behind the shop, in a sunny garden apartment and grow our own vegetables, yet we’re under 2 hours from Sydney and Canberra, and only 30 minutes from the Coast. It was Dion who coined the phrase “green heart of the Highlands”, to describe Robertson – a description that’s since been pretty universally adopted. Goulburn, has become a thriving regional

centre rich in extraordinary, vintage and handmade shopping, as well as great food and fantastic wine. But if you still need to be convinced to get off the highway and visit Goulburn perhaps the choice of fascinating historical locations, beautiful architecture and natural vistas, as well as the delectable food and wine will tempt you. Standing sentinel over the City is the Goulburn War Memorial and Museum on Rocky Hill. Built by public subscription in 1924, the War Memorial is a lasting tribute to the gallant men of the Goulburn District who served in WWI. The War Memorial is a square tower of stone conglomerate and concrete. It stands at a

height of 20 metres above the top of Rocky Hill. Inside the tower is a tablet inscribed with the names of those who enlisted from this district and a lookout gallery that provides spectacular views over the city of Goulburn. Whilst at the Memorial, visit the Museum in the adjacent cottage, which houses a valuable collection of artefacts allocated to the city of Goulburn after World War I including; personal items used by soldiers, memorabilia and medals. The local history room displays Goulburn’s association with, and contribution to the two World Wars. Each object tells a unique story, of survival, mateship and the history of warfare. It’s not just a sense of history that shapes this lovely inland city but the beautiful gardens that are scattered throughout. There is plenty more to discover if you dig around or go further afield and enjoy the rolling countryside, majestic caves and winding rivers. Pop in to Goulburn’s Historic Waterworks set on the riverbank. For young or old, the mechanically-minded or uninitiated, it is certainly not to be missed. The Waterworks and Museum is a tribute to Australia’s industrial revolution and features; the beam engine, installed in 1883 and one of the last fully operational original examples remaining in the world.

The Best Country Rose Show in Australia The Goulburn Rose Festival is in its 22nd year and will be held on the weekend of 14-15 March 2015, at the Goulburn Soldiers’ Club. The 2015 Rose Festival will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the ANZACs. The Goulburn Rose Festival is proud to adopt this as its theme for the Festival. Proceedings will be opened by local woman, Mrs Terri Ross (previously Lieutenant Terri Roche, 8th Field Ambulance) who was amongst the first group of Australian Army nurses to arrive in Vietnam, in May 1967. A key part of the Festival is the hotly-contested rose & floral art competition with $1500 in prize monies. The competition has categories for all - novices, clubs and serious rosarians. Wollongong is located where the mountains meet the sea. It is a great visitor destination and is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney. It is bordered by the Royal National Park, Lake Illawarra and the Illawarra Escarpment. Stanwell Park to the north of Wollongong City, could be regarded as the gateway to the Illawarra region and is an ideal spot for day trippers. Experience sweeping views of 60 www.monthlyimag.com.au

the Seacliff Bridge and northern Wollongong suburbs as you take in the view from nearby Bald Hills. As Bald Hill is internationally known as a hang gliding point, you might get to see some of the hang gliders take a running leap over the edge of the cliff. An experience not to be missed is the Grand Pacific Sea Bridge as it encompasses some of the most spectacular coastline. It is elevated 665 metres over-the-ocean and can be found near Stanwell Park. Spend some time exploring northern coastal villages while heading down the cliff hugging roads hanging above the ocean. North of Wollongong the coastal villages are famous for their unspoilt beaches and rock pools, unique art and crafts, great fishing and surfing spots as well as many cafes and restaurants. Grand Pacific Drive then makes its way into the bustling city of Wollongong, which is the main ‘hub’ along the drive, offering an abundance of adventure activities, great beaches and shopping, fantastic local restaurants and cafes, golf courses, art galleries and more. Visit Belmore Basin and Lighthouse near the Harbour and stroll along historical Flagstaff Hill then continue on to soak up the sensational state parklands at the world class Surfing Beach.
