proudly organised by the St John the Baptist Association South Coast -Inc. The celebration of the Feast of Saint John The Baptist, will take place on Sunday, December 2, 2012, beginning with Mass co- celebrated by the Bishop of Wollongong, Most Reverend Peter Ingham, and Italian Chaplin, Reverend Angelo Bufflo at Saint Francis Xavier's Cathedral Wollongong. At the conclusion of Mass, a religious procession, in which the statue of Saint John the Baptist is carried from Harbour Street, to the Sacred Heart Chapel in Stewart Street, via Crown Street, Kembla and Burelli Streets, Wollongong. From the Editor November We have an outstanding array of festivals for you to enjoy during November. Southern Highland artists will hold their annual Art Studio Trail this month. Visit local artists who open their doors to art buffs keen to see where they live and create. If you have an interest in antiques, be sure to attend the annual Antique Fair in Robertson when Sydney and regional dealers provide a stunning display of antique jewellery, silver ware, glass, linen and furniture for sale. Campbelltown City will hold the annual Fisher's Ghost Street Parade as part of the Fisher's Ghost Festival. Highlights include fun for kids, carnival rides, fireworks and more! Put this one in your diary for a fun family occasion. Early in November, Viva la Gong will bring the heart of Wollongong alive with an eclectic mix of national musicians, vibrant local performers, food, kids activities and artists. Windellama will hold its Sustainable Farm Field Day in November with a focus on exhibits; solar and wind energy

suppliers, mud brick builders, cattle, goats, sheep and alpacas, apiarists; wineries, olive growing, farm forestry, waste and grey water solutions, farm machinery and more. The Taralga Heritage Rally will once again offer displays and demonstrations of vintage machinery and vehicles but as well there will be entertainment, sheep shearing and games, all designed to maximise a fun packed weekend for all ages. Ghost story revisited as festival returns! Open a new page to some ‘spooktacular’ fun at the 57th annual Festival of Fisher’s Ghost. From 1 to 11 November, Campbelltown will celebrate the legend of Fred Fisher, with a variety of events and activities for the whole family to enjoy. A highlight of the annual festival, and the official opening event, this year’s Street Parade will be inspired by the National Year of Reading with the theme ‘Love to Read’. Promoting books, literacy and the importance of reading in everyday life, the parade will bring some muchloved literature classics and fictional characters to life, as well as be awash with the parade’s theme colour – orange. The spectacle will take place on 3 November, when Queen Street will represent something straight out of a ghost story as our city’s most famous supernatural resident and our reading theme unite. All of the festival highlights that you have come to know and love are back. The carnival at Bradbury Oval with Saturday night fireworks will soar to new heights, while Fisher’s Kids will provide a feast for young children’s creative senses at Campbelltown Arts Centre. The Street Fair on 10 November will see Mawson Park transformed into a ‘kid friendly zone’, with a Playdoh imagination factory, ‘Let’s Dance’ live entertainment workshop where the

audience become the stars of the show, a special visit by Cat in the Hat, a petting zoo and a host of other exciting activities. A variety of market stalls will feature everything from gifts and food commodities to health products and community information. Stallholders are still being sought, so register your interest at fishersghost.com.au, or phone 4645 4514 for your chance to share in the spirit of Campbelltown’s biggest annual community celebration. Other festival highlights include the Fisher’s Ghost Extreme skate comp, the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award, the annual Fun Run, and the award-winning Fisher’s Gig, which boasts a superb line-up of local and national bands and is set to rock Campbelltown on 3 November. Don’t put the book down too soon and miss any of the action! For a full calendar of events, visit www.fishersghost.com.au

The 'Crucible' Comes to the Southern Highlands When ignorance and fear mix, the future is frightening! Those of us who are lucky enough to live in a free and democratic society tend to believe, although somewhat naively, that truth will always prevail and that we are safe so long as we stick to it. It was however, only 60 years ago that fear swept through the supposedly free and democratic USA during the era later known as McCarthyism. Hundreds of people were sent to prison and somewhere between ten and twelve thousand people lost their jobs, most without even knowing their accuser or even what they were accused of. From this paranoia rose Arthur Miller’s inspiration for the play “The Crucible”. With McCarthyism too hot a topic for open performance, Miller found striking resemblances in the witch hunts of Salem Masachussetts in 1692 and 1693 to illustrate his views on contemporary 1950’s USA. The Highlands Theatre Group is proud to welcome Ebony Hope to the role of director for this Tony Award winning play. Ebony is an accomplished actress and has assisted with direction on a couple of productions previously. She has always loved this play and is keen to shake things up a little for audiences. “Most plays the Highlands Theatre Group have delivered in the past are either comedies or have a strong comic element or sarcastic wit to them but The Crucible is definitely not a funny play in any sense of the word – it is a tragedy, designed to leave the audience wrestling with some pretty big emotions and issues!” Not a lot is known about the 19 people who were hanged for witchcraft and the one man who was crushed by stones for failing to enter a plea in the Salem Witch Trials and so Miller’s work is partly fictional. He did however do much research on this period in history and so, for the most part, the roles are accurately represented, and the sentences are the same as those given to their real-life counterparts. It is this similarity to the truth that is so frightening. That you can have

integrity and be minding your own business one day and then be having to justify your innocence the next; that you could be presumed guilty and that this could happen to any one of us, is truly destabilising. Don’t miss your opportunity to come along and see one of the classic American plays of the 20th century. NOVEMBER 9 – 24, “THE CRUCIBLE” by Arthur Miller - presented by the Highlands Theatre Group DIRECTOR: Ebony Hope WHERE: Mittagong Playhouse, cnr Bowral Road & Old Hume Hwy, Mittagong

WHEN: Nov 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 8pm Nov 11, 18 and 24 at 2pm TICKETS: $18 special - all tickets for opening night $22 (adults) and $20 (concession) booked online plus a 30c booking fee $24 (adults) and $22 (concession) booked through Tourism Southern Highlands Group and family prices also available – go to www.htg.org.au for full details BOOKINGS: Book online at www.htg.org.au and click on the yellow ‘BOOK‘ button or contact Southern Highlands Tourism on

Historic Berrima

Berrima & Moss Vale

www.highlandsimag.com.au

Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of

flowers and shrubs. Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

The Everything Store While visiting the Southern Highlands during November, be sure to take the time to visit the Everything Store in Sutton Forest, where the more you look, the more you see! The Everything Store is a treasure trove of collectables, antiques and in fact has a bit of "everything". They buy and sell collectables. Feel free to wander around and when you stumble upon some small brass gizmo, or an interesting object, be sure to ask Michelle what it is. Even if you do not make a purchase, it is a joy to just view what is on offer, because the Everything Store is almost like a museum. Cricket was changed forever by the World Series Cricket revolution. In two tumultuous years in the 1970s, the game was effectively propelled from the 19th to the 21st century. Packer, Lights Action, an exhibition exploring every aspect of the World Series Cricket revolution, will run at the Bradman International Cricket Hall of Fame in Bowral from 27 October 2012 to 31 March 2013. Visitors will learn why media magnate Kerry Packer waged war on the game’s crusty establishment and divided cricket communities everywhere. Watch exclusive interviews with series’ pioneers Dennis Lillee, Tony Greig, Ian Chappell and Clive Lloyd, and examine rarely-seen matchused player clothing, equipment and merchandising. Kerry Packer spent millions of dollars recruiting the world’s finest players, assembling his multiple camera team and pioneering the use of lights, helmets, white balls, coloured clothing and new technologies. Springtime in Robertson

Robertson

www.highlandsimag.com.au

The green heart of the Highlands Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands. In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station in landscaped gardens. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft and collectables. The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive. There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes. Robbo Spuds are always on sale in season (December to April). All this and more in a picturesque village where people are friendly, parking is easy and there is a genuine country town atmosphere. Nearby are three of the longest drop

waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Barren Grounds nature reserve has wonderful wild flowers and easy plateau walks to coastal views. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama. Further afield you can find Fitzroy Falls which offers scenery on a grand scale. Waterfalls, sandstone cliffs, lush rainforest gullies and sweeping views of the escarpment are a good reason for visitors to include this area in your tour of the Southern Highlands.. The Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre is open seven days and provides a range of information on Morton National Park and other places to visit in the area. The Falls Café offers a selection of tasty home cooked meals or simply coffee and cake in a bush environment. Barbecue facilities, toilets, picnic shelters all with disabled access.

Antiques in Robertson Village The 24th and 25th November will again see the School of Arts Hall at Robertson transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine for the Fourth Annual Robertson Antiques and Collectables Fair. Traditionally, the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to many different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much

information as possible to help the collector. The Robertson Antiques Fair will be a bonanza for the village with a great number of tourists visiting the fair and also visiting many local attractions such as our three local waterfalls, the Illawarra Fly treetop walk, the Robertson Heritage Railway Station Gallery, the Village Woodworks that also incorporates the Robertson Guild art and craft display. After your visit to the Antiques Fair there is still plenty to do in the village such as browsing through the many shops selling antiques, arts and crafts, foodstuffs and local produce. Also why not visit one of the many cafes for morning/afternoon tea or lunch. Events like the fair are important to the School of Arts Committee who rely on income from these functions to maintain the hall. During the fair the

ladies from the hall committee will be serving light lunches and morning/ afternoon teas. The Robertson Antiques Fair will be open to the public from 10am until 5pm on Saturday 24th November and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 25th November. Admission is $6 for adults and includes a lucky door prize ticket. Accompanied children are free. There is plenty of parking nearby and wheelchair access into the hall. The Robertson School of Arts is situated on the Illawarra Highway at Robertson, right in the centre of the village. For further information please call Mick Dalton on mobile 0428 446 534.

Wollongong - where the mountains meet the sea! Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west. The Wollongong coastline offers 17 sparkling surf beaches that are patrolled by lifesavers from September to April. Beaches are generally in easy walking distance from shops, hotels and clubs. Stanwell Park to the north of Wollongong City, could be regarded as the gateway to the Illawarra region and is an ideal spot for day trippers. Bald Hill Lookout, a magnificent platform looking south over Wollongong City, has outstanding views of the Illawarra and its escarpment. Watch hang gliders and para gliders or marvel at the spot

where Lawrence Hargrave first took flight.
