Ghost story revisited as festival returns! Open a new page to some ‘spooktacular’ fun at the 57th annual Festival of Fisher’s Ghost. From 1 to 11 November, Campbelltown will celebrate the legend of Fred Fisher, with a variety of events and activities for the whole family to enjoy. A highlight of the annual festival, and the official opening event, this year’s Street Parade will be inspired by the National Year of Reading with the theme ‘Love to Read’. Promoting books, literacy and the importance of reading in everyday life, the parade will bring some muchloved literature classics and fictional characters to life, as well as be awash with the parade’s theme colour – orange. The spectacle will take place on 3 November, when Queen Street will represent something straight out of a ghost story as our city’s most famous supernatural resident and our reading theme unite. All of the festival highlights that you have come to know and love are back. The carnival at Bradbury Oval with Saturday night fireworks will soar to new heights, while Fisher’s Kids will provide a feast for young children’s creative senses at Campbelltown Arts Centre. The Street Fair on 10 November will see Mawson Park transformed into a ‘kid friendly zone’, with a Playdoh imagination factory, ‘Let’s Dance’ live entertainment workshop where the audience become the stars of the
show, a special visit by Cat in the Hat, a petting zoo and a host of other exciting activities. A variety of market stalls will feature everything from gifts and food commodities to health products and community information. Stallholders are still being sought, so register your interest at fishersghost.com.au, or phone 4645 4514 for your chance to share in the spirit of Campbelltown’s biggest annual community celebration. Other festival highlights include the Fisher’s Ghost Extreme skate comp, the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award, the annual Fun Run, and the award-winning Fisher’s Gig, which boasts a superb line-up of local and national bands and is set to rock Campbelltown on 3 November. Don’t put the book down too soon and miss any of the action! For a full calendar of events, visit www.fishersghost.com.au

Our last illustrated lecture for the year, by British Landscape Designer Keir Davidson, looks at the beautiful Moss Garden at Saihôji in Kyoto. (For details see page14). Images of this beautiful place are amongst the best known of all Japanese gardens. Moss-covered islands joined by turf bridges fill a shady pond, while patches of sunlight pick out rock groupings tucked away amongst dense trees, the moss flowing seamlessly around them. The path around the pond leads past various buildings, offering ever-changing views across the water. Who built this magnificent and mysterious garden and why does it have two distinct parts? And why was its builder so drawn to certain elements of this site that he carefully included them in his design? ADFAS Bowral offers eight illustrated lectures each year covering a wide range of topics related to the fine arts. Why not become a member of the Society? Visit www.adfas.org.au for more information.

Picton, Thirlmere, Bargo, Appin Wollondilly is a popular destination for a Tree Change or holiday. The area features Razorback Range, Burragorang Valley and towns like Picton, Appin, Thirlmere and Warragamba. Wollondilly, on the south western outskirts of Sydney and at the foothills of the Southern Highlands, is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures. It is proudly known as “The Catchment”, supplying the bulk of Sydney’s drinking water and is a mecca for nature lovers boasting 21 bush walks, wildlife sanctuaries, lookouts and National Parks. The district is rich in history. The earliest known inhabitants of the district were the natives of the Gundangurra Tribe, who gave the area its name. "A place where spirits dwell" and "Water trickling over rocks". Today, the life and liveliness of the area attracts visitors who come to participate in adventure activities and sports. Wollondilly boasts many unique Bed & Breakfast facilities offering perfect service, home made meals and local knowledge. Cricket was changed forever by the World Series Cricket revolution. In two tumultuous years in the 1970s, the game was effectively propelled from the 19th to the 21st century. According to Executive Director of the Bradman Foundation, Rina Hore, everything changed. “The philosophy of cricket changed. So did its character. So did its standards and values. So did its language, dress and payments. And suddenly it was a game played at night,” she said. Packer, Lights Action, an exhibition exploring every aspect of the World Series Cricket revolution, will run at the Bradman International Cricket Hall of Fame at Bowral from 27 October 2012 to 31 March 2013. Visitors will learn why media magnate Kerry Packer waged war on the game’s crusty establishment and divided cricket communities everywhere. Historic Berrima
Berrima & Moss Vale
www.highlandsimag.com.au
Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Art Studio Trail & Arts Festival The Southern Highlands Art Studio Trail, a once a year opportunity to see beyond the studio door of some of the Highlands artists, is on again this November. The Art Trail is the feature event of the Southern Highlands Arts Festival, a time to celebrate and enjoy the creativity of the region. Twenty four studios will be opening as part of the Art Trail. Visitors can meet the artists, see their work in the place it was created and purchase directly from the studio door - painting (traditional and contemporary), ceramics, jewellery, woodwork, furniture, textiles, photography, mosaics, garden sculpture, painted tiles, printmaking and botanical art Entry is free and all studios are open from 10am – 4pm each day on the weekends of 3-4 November and 10-11 November. Another major event in the Southern Highlands Arts Festival is Sculpture on High@Hillview. Originally built in the 1850s, Hillview was the viceregal retreat for the governors of NSW between 1882 and 1958. It will be open to the public from 3 – 30 November and will host a major sculpture exhibition. The Southern Highlands Arts Festival is also a good time to visit the excellent Southern Highlands art galleries and special exhibitions, book into an arts workshop or take in some music or theatre. Full details of the program can be found at www.shaf.com.au or from Tourism Southern Highlands Visitors Information Centre, Mittagong. Ph: 1300 657 559.
Werai Garden Sculpture Competiton What would you do if you were driving along a quiet country road and saw a pair of legs sticking out of a ditch with a bike nearby? Would you stop and render assistance, keep driving and ignore it, or stop and look at all the other interesting garden sculptures? This is exactly what is happening at the Werai Teahouse & Nursery for the next month or so, as their annual garden sculpture competition takes place. The theme for the competition in 2012 was ‘bikes’ and one of the entries, “Stacked”, has brought a smile to a lot of people who have seen it, as it appears as if the rider has hit a rock and been launched into the nearby ditch. Each year the Werai Teahouse & Nursery runs the sculpture competition to raise money for a worthy charity, and this year the beneficiary is “Bikes for Humanity” who repair old bikes and send them to third world countries. The sculpture competition is now in the judging phase, and the organizers would like as many people as possible to ‘vote’ for the best sculpture. Voting is via a gold coin donation into the appropriate ‘voting tin’ located inside the Teahouse, and the winner is the tin with the most money in it, at the conclusion of voting which is 4.00pm Sunday 14th October 2012. Local artists have created numerous sculptures, all with the theme of bikes. Located at the intersection of Mt Broughton and Werai Rds at Werai. Open 8am til 5pm every day except Tuesdays. Ph 4883 4664 or visit them on Facebook or on www.werai.com.au

The first vineyard that you discover once you leave the M5 motorway from Sydney is The Hermitage vineyard, the home of Marist Brothers Wines. Originally acquired over 100 years ago for the training of the Brothers, the 155-hectare estate is today a sacred place of quiet and tranquility. In addition to the assortment of cool climate wines produced on the 13 hectare vineyard, including sauvignon blanc, riesling, pinot gris, pinot noir and merlot, a selection of homemade jams and relishes is also available for you to taste. Not to be missed on your visit is a viewing of the beautifully restored neo- gothic style chapel.

This American classic is set during the notorious Salem Witch Hunts in Massachusetts during 1692 & 1693.
