New Years Eve in Macarthur
Macarthur
www.highlandsimag.com.au
Camden, Narellan, Campbelltown Macarthur - the best of both worlds! Where can you find a vibrant city with modern delights, enjoy the tranquillity of nature reserves and historic charm, but also revel in adrenalin packed activities. Macarthur is less than an hour’s drive south-west of Sydney and includes the cities of Campbelltown and historic Camden. Throughout the region, the history of colonial settlement is reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings; Camden Park House and Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area. The Macarthur district played a significant role in the birth of the Australian Wool, Wine and Wheat industries. History books tell us that John Macarthur was responsible for our success as producers of fine Merino Wool, but historical records show that Elizabeth Macarthur, his wife, played a larger role than he did. John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW. Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including a number of small boutique art
galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur. Macarthur is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers. The beauty of the nature reserves and wildlife trails will surprise and delight with spectacular flowing streams, rock escarpments and native flora and fauna. For a superb day out, visit one of Macarthur's most interesting attractions; Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan offers a lovely family day out in the midst of 416 hectares of Australian bushland. The facility includes picnic areas, a restaurant, over 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a native flora research facility and NSW Seedbank. VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRES

Illawarra Fly is 710m above the sea floor overlooking the escarpment with a 500m steel treetop canopy walk, 25m above the forest floor plus a 45m high tower overlooking vast areas of the South Coast. The walk encompasses interactive learning boards, teaching children about the ancient rainforest and its inhabitants such as lyrebirds and wombats, as you walk through the treetop canopy. The rainforest at the Illawarra Fly is full of native Australian wildlife including; wombats, echidna, wallabies, lyrebirds, crimson rosella, kookaburras and yellow tailed cockatoos. The native fauna includes Lilly Pilly, Prickly Currant Bush, Native Mulberry Bush, Giant Tree Ferns, Cabbage Tree Palms, Brown Barrel Eucalypts, Musk Daisy Bush and Sassafras. The 45m Knights Tower views the expansive valley floor to the coastline between Wollongong and Kiama The tall timbers and rainforest floor are important ecological contributors to the Australian Bush and are fundamental to the wellbeing of the region’s biodiversity. Illawarra Fly takes on the responsibility of preserving this important landscape and provides a safe and fun environment for kids to learn with a walking experience like no other. Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of

flowers and shrubs. Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Relive the World Series Cricket Revolution Cricket was changed forever by the World Series Cricket revolution. In two tumultuous years in the 1970s, the game was effectively propelled from the 19th to the 21st century. Packer, Lights Action, an exhibition exploring every aspect of the World Series Cricket revolution, will run at the Bradman International Cricket Hall of Fame in Bowral from 27 October 2012 to 31 March 2013. Visitors will learn why media magnate Kerry Packer waged war on the game’s crusty establishment and divided cricket communities everywhere. Watch exclusive interviews with
series’ pioneers Dennis Lillee, Tony Greig, Ian Chappell and Clive Lloyd, and examine rarely-seen matchused player clothing, equipment and merchandising. Kerry Packer spent millions of dollars recruiting the world’s finest players, assembling his multiple camera team and pioneering the use of lights, helmets, white balls, coloured clothing and new technologies. The first vineyard that you discover once you leave the M5 motorway from Sydney is The Hermitage vineyard, the home of Marist Brothers Wines. Originally acquired over 100 years ago for the training of the Brothers, the 155-hectare estate is today a sacred place of quiet and tranquility. In addition to the assortment of cool climate wines produced on the 13 hectare vineyard, including sauvignon blanc, riesling, pinot gris, pinot noir and merlot, a selection of homemade jams and relishes is also available for you to taste. Not to be missed on your visit is a viewing of the beautifully restored neo- gothic style chapel.

Traditionally, wine growing in Australia took place in warmer regions where access to water for irrigation made growing grapes easier. Since the early 1990s though there has been a number of traditional wine makers establish boutique wineries in the Southern Highlands, producing distinctive, cool climate wines. Now many of the region's winemakers use traditional and modern techniques. The area is gaining recognition for the quality and variety of cool climate wines making a tour of the many wineries and cellar doors a 'must do' for visitors and day trippers.

The green heart of the Highlands Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands. In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station in landscaped gardens. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft and collectables. The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive. There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes. Robbo Spuds are always on sale in season (December to April). All this and more in a picturesque village where people are friendly, parking is easy and there is a genuine country town atmosphere. waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Barren Grounds nature reserve has wonderful wild flowers and easy plateau walks to coastal views. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama. Further afield you can find Fitzroy Falls which offers scenery on a grand scale. Waterfalls, sandstone cliffs, lush rainforest gullies and sweeping views of the escarpment are a good reason for visitors to include this area in your tour of the Southern Highlands.. The Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre is open seven days and provides a range of information on Morton National Park and other places to visit in the area. The Falls Café offers a selection of tasty home cooked meals or simply coffee and cake in a bush environment. Barbecue facilities, toilets, picnic shelters all with disabled access.

Australia’s first inland city Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and hospitality. The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest. The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards.
Goulburn Historic Waterworks - a part of Australia's heritage The Goulburn Historic Waterworks is located on the banks of the Wollondilly River. It has fully operational steam engines; the 1883 Appleby Bros. beam engine and the 1860s Hick Hargreaves corliss valve engine. The beam engine dates to the 1880s when it was installed to pump water for Goulburn. The Waterworks is of national significance as it is the only complete, workable, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location in the Southern Hemisphere. It is steaming again after an absence of over two years due to essential maintenance on the boiler. The Pumphouse Café serves locally produced meals and has a retro-style theme. Ph: 4823 4448

By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise. In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products.
Riversdale Historic Homestead – a historic 1830s Inn Riversdale was purchased in 1875 by Edward Twynam who later became Surveyor General of NSW. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1967 from the Twynam family and is set in beautiful flowering gardens. The Inn is furnished as a mid-19th century colonial cottage. It is an ideal venue to just have a picnic or to book a function, a wedding or a christening. Mob: 0414 951 955 The Big Merino A celebration of Australia's fine wool industry. The Big Merino was built in 1985 as a monument to Goulburn and the surrounding district’s fine wool industry.
