The beauty of Bowral

From the Editor February During the coming months, readers have a wonderful array of events to attend or participate in, as this very diverse and rich area offers up its best.

Be sure to attend the Quilt and Embroidery Exhibition at HarbisonCare in Moss Vale during February. Apart from enjoying a home-made afternoon or morning tea and the beautiful exhibition, support the efforts to raise money to buy a bus for the residents of Harbison. The village of Thirlmere will once again host the Thirlmere Festival of Steam early in March. Enjoy all the fun of a country fair with entertainment, parades, guided tours of the Rail Museum and Steam Train Rides. If you enjoy a good old fashioned country show, then you can look forward to the Robertson and Goulburn Shows during March. These events have all the excitement of large regional shows with the usual line up of interesting agricultural attractions as well as novelty events and sideshows.

Don’t miss the Rose Festival in Goulburn as part of the celebrations to mark Goulburn being150 years old. The festival will feature rose displays, bus tours of the public rose gardens, an art exhibition and demonstrations. Stalls will include local lavender products, craft stalls and jewellery. Celebrate everything good about summer in the Canberra region by attending the Summerside Festival. This festival runs for the month of February and is full of events celebrating local and seasonal produce and the region's wines. As well, there will be innovative and exciting performances, events and exhibitions, highlighting local talent. Enjoy! Camden, Narellan, Campbelltown Macarthur - the best of both worlds! Where can you find a vibrant city with modern delights, enjoy the tranquillity of nature reserves and historic charm, but also revel in adrenalin packed activities. Macarthur is less than an hour’s drive south-west of Sydney and includes the cities of Campbelltown and historic Camden. Throughout the region, the history of colonial settlement is reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings; Camden Park House and Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area. The Macarthur district played a significant role in the birth of the Australian Wool, Wine and Wheat industries. History books tell us that John Macarthur was responsible for our success as producers of fine Merino Wool, but historical records show that Elizabeth Macarthur, his wife, played a larger role than he did. John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW. Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including a number of small boutique art

galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur. Macarthur is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers. The beauty of the nature reserves and wildlife trails will surprise and delight with spectacular flowing streams, rock escarpments and native flora and fauna. For a superb day out, visit one of Macarthur's most interesting attractions; Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan offers a lovely family day out in the midst of 416 hectares of Australian bushland. The facility includes picnic areas, a restaurant, over 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a native flora research facility and NSW Seedbank. Take a walk, ride a bike or just relax while the kids play at the Lake Alexandra Reserve, Park and Garden. This special place is situated in the midst of the Mittagong Township and is a man - made lake. It was originally a dam, which supplied water for engines hauling coal to the Fitzroy iron works in the 19C. A park - like reserve surrounds the lake and there is an abundance of birdlife on the water and shores. Should you be a resident in the region, it is a treat to watch how the seasons change the flora around the reserve, with the autumn months providing a particularly beautiful spectacle with the changing colours of the deciduous, predominantly English, trees and plants on the foreshore. Relive the World Series Cricket Revolution Cricket was changed forever by the World Series Cricket revolution. In two tumultuous years in the 1970s, the game was effectively propelled from the 19th to the 21st century. Packer, Lights Action, an exhibition exploring every aspect of the World Series Cricket revolution, will run at the Bradman International Cricket Hall of Fame in Bowral from 27 October 2012 to 31 March 2013. Visitors will learn why media magnate Kerry Packer waged war on the game’s crusty establishment and divided cricket communities everywhere. Watch exclusive interviews with

series’ pioneers Dennis Lillee, Tony Greig, Ian Chappell and Clive Lloyd, and examine rarely-seen matchused player clothing, equipment and merchandising. Kerry Packer spent millions of dollars recruiting the world’s finest players, assembling his multiple camera team and pioneering the use of lights, helmets, white balls, coloured clothing and new technologies. history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs. Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying

Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

An entry for your new diary………. The Friends of Harbison are working hard to raise money to buy a new bus for the residents’ use. They will be holding an exciting exhibition of quilts and embroidery at HarbisonCare, 36 Yarrawa Road, Moss Vale on Saturday and Sunday February 16th and 17th, 2013, from 10am to 4pm each day. Some of the quilts will be available for purchase at the exhibition. Be prepared to be amazed at the talents of our local quilters and embroiderers, and to sample delicious home-made morning and afternoon teas in the café area. There will also be an enticing array of “Hampers for Harbison” available for purchase, filled with gifts of all shapes and sizes.

As you drive north across the bridge over the Wingecarribee River near Moss Vale, you’ll see a concrete path winding across the paddock. This pathway is a 4.5 km walk to Burradoo. From the roadway it looks a bit ordinary and uninviting, but once you are on the path you might even wonder if you haven’t stepped onto one of those English rural footpaths that meanders by the river, past and through farmland. The path is measured in 500 metre lengths so you know how far you’ve gone or when it’s time to turn back. You will need to take water and sun protection with you as there is no shade on this pathway. There is a carpark near the bridge where the monument to Bong Bong, the first Southern Highlands settlement is located. Look for open land just north of Moss Vale.

Tickle your fancy at the 2013 Robertson Show There are so many highlights associated with Robertson’s annual show it’s hard to single out any particular event. From the moment the gates open on Friday, March 1st until the spectacular fireworks display the following evening, this year’s show program promises to be one of the best ever presented with something for all members of the family. Over the two days, the spotlight will shine on the centre ring where horse and rider team up to impress the judges as they strive for the elusive championship ribbons.

Early indications are that the Hindmarsh Pavilion will be a popular venue as patrons cast their eyes over a vast number of categories including craft, needlework, flowers and cakes on display. Don’t forget the high quality on exhibit with the Dairy and Beef cattle strutting their stuff while numbers in the poultry and dog sections have surpassed all expectations. Throw in a host of novelty events such as the Great Australian Potato Race, Demolition Derby, push bikes and Gig races, women’s pumpkin lawn

bowls, weight judging competition, hay stacking and the unusual rides for those who like to be daring, while those wanting to test their appetite can enter the pie eating competition. Old timers will be able to recall memories of the past when the Berrima District Old Machinery Club promotes an intriguing range of machines from days gone by. Whatever tickles your fancy rest assured you will find it at this year’s Robertson Show.

The green heart of the Highlands Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands. In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station in landscaped gardens. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe. The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is

recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive. There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes. All this and more in a picturesque village where people are friendly, parking is easy and there is a genuine country town atmosphere. Nearby are three of the longest drop waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Barren Grounds nature reserve has wonderful wild flowers and easy plateau walks to coastal views. Goulburn City Celebrates 150 years! In March 2013 Goulburn will celebrate its glorious 150 years as a city. Among the events to be held will be two very rare exhibitions of 19th century architectural documents produced by one man whose many splendid building designs contributed to the city’s heritage. This was Edmund Cooper Manfred, a young English man who trained with Edmund Blacket before moving to Goulburn. Manfred designed many of the buildings constructed between 1880s - 1890s. The Manfred Collection was donated to the Goulburn & District Historical

A Windmill Theatre production School Dance By Matthew Whittet

Duet presents Colin Hay 'Finding My Dance' Australian Tour 2013

Two Gents Productions’ Kupenga Kwa Hamlet / Two Gentlemen Of Verona

Coming to us direct from its 2013 Sydney Festival season, School Dance is a wonderfully original mash-up of `80s kitsch and kooky, tongue-in-cheek humour - perfect for anyone who is, or has ever been, a teenager.

Colin recounts stories from his life - sidesplitting comedy - interwoven with classic songs that have defined his amazing musical career. Whether or not you have seen him before, you will laugh, you may shed a tear, but you will most certainly be more than entertained.

Played in repertory Direct from London! Two brilliantly energetic reinterpretations of Shakespeare’s classic plays. In broad, loud, triumphantly energetic `township style’, the two actors bring Shakespeare’s verse to life in new and unfamiliar ways.
