The beauty of Bowral
From the Editor January Get into the holiday spirit in the Southern Highlands during January. We begin the new year with a host of events and things to do that will be sure to capture the interest of visitors and locals alike. Early in the month there will be thrills and spills at the Picton Rodeo, not just a Rodeo but an evening of entertainment and fun during a full 19 event, adrenalin pumped Rodeo. In the Wollongong region, the Illawarra Folk Club will hold its annual award winning Folk Festival offering an eclectic mix of music from a variety of cultures and styles. Participate and enjoy a real Aussie day out this year when Berrima once again celebrates Australia Day in style! Lots of fun and entertainment plus the usual parade and awards ceremony will make this event in Berrima a day not to be missed. Love a good carnival, then be sure
to attend the month-long carnival in Huskisson on the South Coast, from the end of December and throughout January. There will be lots of fun for everyone and fireworks on Australia Day. Celebrate everything good about summer in the Canberra region by attending the Summerside Festival. This festival runs for the month of February and is full of events celebrating local and seasonal produce and the region's wines. As well, there will be innovative and exciting performances, events and exhibitions highlighting local talent. Enjoy! As you travel throughout our scenically diverse region, be sure to carry your iMag with you and have a safe and happy stay!

Camden, Narellan, Campbelltown Macarthur - the best of both worlds! Where can you find a vibrant city with modern delights, enjoy the tranquillity of nature reserves and historic charm, but also revel in adrenalin packed activities. Macarthur is less than an hour’s drive south-west of Sydney and includes the cities of Campbelltown and historic Camden. Throughout the region, the history of colonial settlement is reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings; Camden Park House and Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area. The Macarthur district played a significant role in the birth of the Australian Wool, Wine and Wheat industries. History books tell us that John Macarthur was responsible for our success as producers of fine Merino Wool, but historical records show that Elizabeth Macarthur, his wife, played a larger role than he did. John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW. Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including a number of small boutique art
galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur. Macarthur is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers. The beauty of the nature reserves and wildlife trails will surprise and delight with spectacular flowing streams, rock escarpments and native flora and fauna. For a superb day out, visit one of Macarthur's most interesting attractions; Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan offers a lovely family day out in the midst of 416 hectares of Australian bushland. The facility includes picnic areas, a restaurant, over 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a native flora research facility and NSW Seedbank. VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRES

Historic Berrima
Berrima & Moss Vale
www.highlandsimag.com.au
Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of

flowers and shrubs. Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Historic Berrima Celebrates Australia Day 2013 'Historic Berrima readies itself for another great family day out for the Australia Day Celebrations 26 January 2013' says event organiser Col Gelling. The Australia Day Celebrations over the last 15 years, in historic Berrima, have grown to be one of the Southern Highlands premier tourist events. Visitor numbers are in the thousands every year and on the increase. What’s the attraction? Probably the location; no other village in the Southern Highlands can lay claim to a more historic and picturesque backdrop in which to celebrate this day in our nation's calendar of public holidays. With over 60-market stalls, local and interstate, and entertainment for all the family, grand parades, vintage cars, fire engine displays, fresh produce markets, and face painting, there is something for everyone. The atmosphere is one of a real Aussie family day out with a bit of patriotism and pride in our country thrown in. The official part of the day starts at the historic Berrima Court House Museum at 9.30 am, where young citizen and citizen of the year awards are given by the Mayor of the Shire. This is followed by an address by the Australia Day Ambassador. After the awards ceremony it's off to enjoy the rest of the day to hunt for that allusive piece of craft, either in the market square or in the more traditional shops in Berrima. The grand parade on Australia Day 2013 may prove to be the biggest ever. For the first time it will be opened up to any one person or group who wishes to join in. Contact Colin Gelling, Berrima Court House on 48771505. This year in Kid's Corner, Jeff Patterson
Amusements will have the dodgem cars, two jumping castles and two merry-go-rounds. Another favourite is Malcolm Dowling's farmyard nursery. Kid's Corner also has swings and slippery dips and provides shade for all. In this special area dedicated to the children, there will also be clowns, vintage cars, police displays, steam engine displays & stagecoach rides. Plenty of food, ice creams and soft drinks will be on offer by the Rotary Club of the Berrima District. For the adults it’s a chance to browse through historic Berrima and visit the Berrima Court House Museum. Today a visit to the courthouse is much more a unique theatrical experience rather than a foreboding one. The Berrima courthouse late last year completed a mammoth project in producing and installing a spectacular Son et Lumiere (sound & light show) titled "Treachery Treason & Murder" a dramatic and moving audio visual experience masterfully depicting the most infamous trial of the 1840s. As you walk into the main courtroom you are surrounded on all sides by juror's public gallery, witnesses, and barrister's clerks of the court. As the preamble comes to a conclusion the judge appears out of the darkened courtroom to commence his sentencing of the two murderers. All in all in its latest incarnation, the Berrima courthouse still provides those that enter a glimpse into our early 1830s justice system, albeit without the risk of a lengthy sentence to prison or even a more sombre outcome the death sentence. The Berrima courthouse has become one of the "must see" attractions on Australia day.

The green heart of the Highlands Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands. In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station in landscaped gardens. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian.
The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe. The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive.

Australia’s first inland city Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and hospitality. The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest. The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards. By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It
became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise. In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products.

Big three head stellar festival line-up
Three legendary Australian singers head a stellar lineup for the 28th annual Illawarra Folk Festival at Bulli 17-20 January. The original Song and Danceman Mike McClellan, outstanding countryblues singer-songwriter Jeff Lang and the incomparable Christine Anu (of My Island Home fame) head a list of outstanding international and Australian artists confirmed for the festival at Bulli Showgrounds. Festival Artistic Director David De Santi has more than 150 acts lined up for the annual festival, the biggest folk festival in NSW. “We’re really excited to have Mike McClellan in the line-up. He is an all-time favourite with Australian audiences, and is back touring nationally so it has been a real coup to have him at Bulli,” De Santi said.

“As for Jeff Lang, John Butler once described him as ‘The Man’, so you can’t get a better recommendation than that! “Christine Anu has been a major figure in the Australian music industry for close to two decades, and her bestknown song My Island Home remains one of the great Indigenous anthems of this country.” The festival transforms the Bulli Showground into a cultural village with 11 venues and a wide variety of food and craft stalls. There will be 350 events to choose from over the four days of the festival. Tickets are available online from www. illawarrafolkfestival.com.au/page/ tickets or by calling 1300 887 034
