Autumn is a most delightful time to visit the Southern Highlands region and an ideal time to attend all of the shows and festivals happening over the coming months. Music lovers will enjoy the Bowral Autumn Music Festival when Bowral hosts this annual event in March and will just love Jazz in the Highlands in Mittagong every second weekend. As well, gardeners can mark the Rose Festival in Goulburn as an event to attend in March. As well, the village of Thirlmere will host the Festival of Steam in March. You can enjoy all the fun of a country fair with entertainment, parades and guided tours of the Rail Museum. If you love a good old - fashioned country show, then Moss Vale will hold its agricutural show in March. This event promises all the excitement of large regional shows with the usual line up of interesting attractions as well as sideshows. An annual ‘standout’ festival in the Southern Highlands is Brigadoon in Bundanoon. The gathering of the clans means that festivities will include a street parade, massed pipe bands, dancing, games, displays and more. The Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair is on again early in May and promises to be a draw card for collectors, both serious and novice. Coincidently, the Collector Village will hold its annual Pumpkin Festival and Tallong will hold its Apple Festival on 1 May. Both events promise to be family friendly, with lots of fun, food and entertainment. The Highland Theatre Group will present Murder on the Nile in April for theatre goes and for those who know and appreciate the fine work of this local theatre group. Wollondilly will hold its second creative arts festival, illuminARTe in May, featuring the digital projection of local artworks on landmark buildings and more! Enjoy!

Murder on the Nile
presented by Highlands Theatre Group The Highlands Theatre Group invites you to join them on a romantic paddle steamer cruise down Nile, when they present their first play for the year, ‘Murder On The Nile’ written by Agatha Christie. Adapted from the original works, ‘Death on the Nile’, the Mistress of Mystery and Murder does not disappoint with her inclusion of all the necessary ingredients for a honeymoon that is far from plain sailing. Passion, jealousy, infidelity and murder combine to create an exotic mystery that takes place between Shellal and Wadi Halfa, not far from Egypt. Deadly shenanigans on board, soon muddy the waters for newlyweds Simon Mostyn and his wealthy, young bride Kay Ridgeway, as they celebrate their marriage. Amidst a bevy of quirky characters joining them on their ill-fated voyage, is Kay’s guardian, Canon Pennefather and the slightly unbalanced Jacqueline, Simon’s ex- partner who shadows every move made by 14 www.monthlyimag.com.au
the honeymooning couple. When her jealousy can no longer be contained within this bitter love triangle, Jacqueline feels she has no option but to shoot Simon, which she does, wounding him in the leg. Moments later, Kay is found shot dead in her bunk. Airtight alibis and hidden motives are no deterrent for Canon Pennefather, an amateur sleuth in his own right, as he unravels the outrageous conspiracy behind these crimes, ensuring that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice. Directed by Jim Cheesley, ‘Murder on The Nile’ will be another great night of fun and entertainment, showcasing the marvellous, local talent in our Southern Highlands community. Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May 2016 will see the Bowral Memorial Hall transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when around twenty dealers from all around the country combine for the 29th Southern Highlands Antiques Fair. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, this event has become a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike. Wollondilly is situated on the south western outskirts of Sydney and at the foothills of the Southern Highlands. It is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures in an area that relies on dairying and mixed farming. It takes in Bargo in the south, Appin and Menangle in the east, Warragamba in the north, Yerranderie Ghost Town and the Burragorang Valley to the west. Historic Picton was originally called Stonequarry and was in fact a private town in the early 19C. It has a number of notable historic sites; Vault Hill, owned by an early settler Henry Antill, the old courthouse, built in 1864, a Victorian 20 www.monthlyimag.com.au
classical stone post office with an impressive clock tower, dating from 1892, the CBC Bank (now the National Australia Bank) built in 1885, St Mark’s Anglican Church, and Larkin Cottage, one of the oldest surviving buildings in town. Take in the breathtaking views of the Burragorang Valley, the waters of which are dammed by Warragamba Dam or picnic and BBQ at the Avon, Cordeaux or Nepean Dams. Among the attractions in Wollondilly are Wirrimbirra, a local wildlife sanctuary and Trainworks, home of Australia’s oldest and largest railway museum. Wirrimbirra Sanctuary, which is set in 200 acres of bushland, is a National Trust (NSW) property and is located between Bargo and Tahmoor. There are native animals, a native plant nursery, picnic tables and a Gift Shop. Trainworks in Thirlmere, is a magical place to visit for the enthusiast and the young at heart. Step back in time to an era when everyone travelled by train. There are over 40 locomotives and 80 carriages on display, dating from 1865. As well, there is an exhibition of railway items and memorabilia, a signals display, an authentic fettler’s shed, and a heritage-listed 1880s railway station.

There are more than 50 street market stalls which include local produce with apples and apple cider, a wide variety of craft stalls, as well as food and refreshments. For the children, there is a challenging rock climbing wall and a fiercely contested pieeating competition. ‘Tallong’s got talent’ is always popular as young contestants show off their singing, musical, and dancing skills. Entertainment includes a fleece-to-garment competition in which teams spin the wool and weave a scarf in the fastest time possible; other attractions include photographic and creative writing competitions, an apple bake-off competition, wood chopping and archery demonstrations. An Apple Granny Art competition remembers the delicious Granny Smith apple discovered in Australia Campbelltown 148 years ago. Infant and 110km preschool children are invited Tallong 7km to produce an artwork banner on a Welcome to Tallong Marulan Truck Weigh Sta8on theme. 30km Goulburn The very popular local group Mountain Dew provides music all day and this year there will also be a ukulele band. Sponsored Entry is by a gold coin by donation and there is plenty of parking. 22 www.monthlyimag.com.au

There is a beautiful, childrens' playground and a reserve which surrounds the lake with an abundance of birdlife live on the water and shores. The undercover BBQ facilities are exceptional. Bowral Autumn Music Festival 18 - 20 March
Jane Rutter - flautist
2016 marks a very exciting year for the Bowral Autumn Music Festival as we celebrate ten years of fine music making at St. Jude's Church. The Artistic Director Myee Clohessy has put together a wonderful program for this significant milestone and has invited Australian celebrities such as flautist Jane Rutter, pianist Tamara-Anna Cislowska, the Acacia Quartet returning as ensemble-in-residence and the baroque ensemble The Marias Project. As a festival first, Myee has introduced a performance for children and the young at heart called Play Me A Story...The Nutcracker created by Esmeralda Tintner and include a recital by the talented young organist Jonathon Lee, winner of the Sydney Organ Competition. We are also delighted to be welcoming two distinguished international artists to the Southern Highlands, Dutch violist Emile Cantor from the Orpheus Quartet in Germany and the virtuosic organ soloist, Daniel Moult, from the United Kingdom. To celebrate our own esteemed Australian composers, BAMF will proudly present the world premiere String Quintet by Lyle Chan as well as the Piano Quintet 'Five Chapters' by Elena Kats-Chernin. I hope you can join us to celebrate this first decade of fine music at St Jude's. www. bowralautumnmusicfestival.org.au Tickets: The Bookshop Bowral or ph: 1300 657 559

Kick back and enjoy live Jazz the Licensees of the Mittagong Hotel were at the Mittagong Hotel! keen to provide the venue Jazz in the Highlands is held on the second Saturday of each month. A different band is featured each month. So far the event has proven to be popular with audience numbers growing. Local resident and Jazz devotee, Mary Armstrong, decided to organise the events after moving here to the Highlands and realising there was very little in the way of live entertainment. She has been on the committee of the Sydney Jazz Club for many years and organises similar events in Sydney. Accordingly Mary has many contacts in the Jazz community and fortunately
The focus is on traditional New Orleans style Jazz. In the past bands such as the Black Mountain Jazz Band and The New Orleanians have played. It is anticipated that Jazz in the Highlands will attract Sydney Jazz lovers as well as locals. Holding this events on Saturday afternoons, especially in winter, is a great idea so that the audience can enjoy the music and be home before the evening sets in. Jazz in the Highlands is on at the Mittagong Hotel from 2pm till 5pm. Cover charge is $10. For more details ph: 0411 325 200

Historic Berrima Things to See & Do Berrima Courthouse
Berrima District Museum Berrima Gaol Berrima River Walk VISITOR INFORMATION Southern Highlands Info Centre 62 - 70 Main St, Mittagong Ph: 1300 657 559 www.southern-highlands.com.au
Berrima is a historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. It is a favourite destination for Sydneysiders, Illawarra and Canberra residents and has exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. In the 19thC, the township was destined to become the main town of the Southern Highlands, but when the railway line was built through Moss Vale in the 1860s, it faded to a sleepy village. The first Europeans to investigate the area 32 www.monthlyimag.com.au
were sent by the colonial governor, Governor Hunter. With a water supply provided by the nearby Wingecarribee River, a town plan, in the manner of an English village, was laid out by Robert Hoddle. Few substantial houses were built, although by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the Surveyor-General Inn, in the centre of town, is the longest licensed hotel in NSW. By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage, so the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village by the National Trust. The most interesting period in the history of Berrima is perhaps when it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs during WW1. This complete story can be found at Berrima District Museum as well as many other local history stories. After visiting the Museum (located on the right at the southern end of the village opposite the park) take the Berrima River Walk to understand the impact of the POWs had on the town. Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal people meaning ‘Black Swan’. The Dharawal were displaced in the area by farming and grazing interests and were rarely seen by the 1870s.

Robertson is the lushest of the Southern
Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. It could be said that this was due to the prevalence of landholders with an Irish background. Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies. the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside. Each October, the Robertson Railway Station Gardens are ablaze with the most spectacular display of flowering waratahs in NSW. Visitors can stroll through the gardens any time and purchase a bunch from the Fettlers Shed. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, a Zipline and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama. The village is delighful but as well is an ideal base from which to explore a spectacular hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands. It is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. It is within easy reach of delightful towns which are all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through little shops and galleries.
