From the Editor Every month in the Southern Highlands and surrounding area there is an event or festival to interest everyone but during the coming months the event calendar is exceptional. Camden will host the annual Antique Fair in August. The fair will have up to thirty dealers from NSW and interstate who will bring top quality furniture, jewellery, porcelain, artefacts, linen and lace, and collectable items to sell at the event. Carrington Retirement Village will hold its annual fair with the usual stalls, music and entertainment in August also. Expect a mix of community and village participation offering everything you can expect from a country fair! During September you can look forward to more events; Camden will hold its annual, two-week festival of family fun and entertainment, Bowral will host the annual Tulip Time Festival as well as the Food and 4 www.monthlyimag.com.au
Wine Festival. This Festival will showcase not only wines, but also local produce and culinary demonstrations from local chefs. There will be art and craft displays as well as live entertainment. We have two theatre productions on offer; Fawlty Towers by 'On 4 Young and Old Productions' and the Ghost Train presented by the 'Highlands Theatre Group'. To top off our list of events to attend, Bowral will host the inaugural Home and Garden Show early in September, showcasing all you fancy for your home and garden in the one venue. While you are in the area, be sure to take the opportunity to enhance your stay by visiting a market, a gallery or a country village, then lunch at a local winery while enjoying the taste of our cool climate wines.

Camden Set to Shine in September Don’t miss a jam packed Camden Festival Saturday 13 to Sunday 28 September 2014 showcasing the historic Camden region with a two-week program of fun and entertainment for residents and visitors. Highlights of this fortnight-long extravaganza include the ultimate outdoor movie event ‘Cinema Under the Stars’ at the Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan on Saturday 13 September. Frozen will start at 6.15pm with Saving Mr Banks following at 8pm. On the night popcorn, fairy floss, BBQ, gozleme, coffee and ice cream will all be available for purchase to help create the perfect movie experience. Picnic in the Park – High Tea and Garden Showcase will return for its second year set in the iconic Macarthur Park on Sunday 14 September. Enjoy a variety of high tea and picnic themed stalls, children’s activities such as floral crown making, pot plant painting as well as a jumping castle, face painting and an animal farm. Look No Further Than Macarthur For School Holiday Fun! Don’t let the kids drive you up the walls these school holidays; Macarthur has plenty of activities that the whole family can enjoy! Enjoy a gallop across the countryside at one of the region’s horse riding venues; take a spin around the go-kart track Michael Schumacher style (we have both indoor and outdoor tracks) or test your mountain biking skills at the Australian Botanic Garden’s Enduro Trial - an international standard, purpose built mountain bike trail which provides hours of fun. Wollondilly, is situated on the south western outskirts of Sydney and at the foothills of the Southern Highlands. It is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures in an area that relies on dairying and mixed farming. It takes in Bargo in the south, Appin and Menangle in the east, Warragamba in the north, Yerranderie Ghost Town and the Burragorang Valley to the west. Historic Picton was originally called Stonequarry and was in fact a private town in the early 19C. It has a number of notable historic sites; Vault Hill, owned by an early settler Henry Antill, the old courthouse, built in 1864, a Victorian classical stone post office with an impressive clock tower, dating from 1892, the CBC Bank (now the National Australia Bank) built in 1885, St Mark’s Anglican Church, and Larkin Cottage, one of the oldest surviving buildings in town. Among the attractions in Wollondilly are Wirrimbirra, a local wildlife sanctuary and Trainworks, home of Australia’s oldest and largest railway museum. Wirrimbirra Sanctuary, which is set in 200 acres of bushland, is a National Trust (NSW) property and is located between Bargo and Tahmoor. There are native animals, a native plant nursery, picnic tables and a Gift Shop. Train Works in Thirlmere is a magical place to visit for the enthusiast and the young at heart. Step back in time to an era when everyone travelled by train. There are over 40 locomotives and 80 carriages on display, dating from 1865. As well, there is an exhibition of railway items and memorabilia, a signals display, an authentic fettler’s shed, and a heritage-listed 1880s railway station.

The shopping precinct in Bowral has an atmosphere like that of few other country towns as it offers an eclectic variety of boutiques, bookstores, antique and craft shops, restaurants and cafes. Bowral is famous for its country gardens and fields of tulips in spring. Just 115 km southwest of Sydney, Bowral has always been a fashionable destination for Sydneysiders and day trippers. The Bradman Museum The Bradman Museum is the Home of Cricket Memories both past and present. It preserves and displays match used objects from Trumper to Tendulkar. The most recent acquisition is Michael Carberry’s broken bat from the 5th Test, Sydney from the recent Ashes series (January 2014). Cricket Australia has kindly facilitated this donation. The Museum has a great deal of live footage on display each day. We have just introduced 15 new interviews, taking the growing total exhibited to 96. These unique interviews are of international players, journalists and broadcasters. The free ‘Bradman Centre’ app reveals three abridged interviews. However there are over 100 hours of viewing in the Museum.

THE GHOST TRAIN ‘They do say, to look upon the ghost train do mean death.’’ Far from taking a well- earned break after the highly successful run of ‘Chicago’ in April, the Highlands Theatre Group has embarked on their mid- year production, ‘The Ghost Train’. Written in 1923 by English actor and playwright Arthur Ridley, it is a tale of mystery and intrigue, set in the waiting room of a remote railway station in rural Cornwall. It’s here that a mismatched group of strangers are forced to spend the night together, after missing their train connection to Truro. They choose to ignore the exhortations of the station master to leave, despite his citing of the local legend about a phantom train that dooms to death, all who lay eyes upon it. What unfolds is a tale of deception, suspense and chilling surprises. Last seen on stage as ‘Go to Hell Kitty’ in ‘Chicago’, Ebony Hope has resumed her role as

Director for this production, assisted by Steven Clancy. A Drive Through Our Winter Landscape The Southern Highlands is scattered with delightful villages like Robertson, Bundanoon and Burrawang; they are perfect destinations for a lazy afternoon outing. You might consider the following route for something different: • Begin at Fitzroy Falls, in the Morton National Park. The NPWS Visitor Centre, has toilets and a café. • From here, head back along Wildes Meadow Rd and Myra Vale Rd. (13.5 kilometre drive) to Belmore Falls. The Falls are located in the Morton National Park, and there are walking tracks and picnic facilities. • After Belmore Falls travel towards Robertson via Pearsons Lane and the Illawarra Hwy. Visit Robertson Nature Reserve which is a 5 hectares of unique rainforest and a 750m walk. In the town of Robertson, you can visit specialty shops, cafes, the Old Cheese Factory which houses a gift shop, homewares and a country cafe. Stay a while and enjoy a devonshire tea. • When you leave Robertson, you can then travel down Jamberoo Pass where you can enter the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk or travel further to Minnamurra Rainforest. Here you will find an abundance of wildlife, birdlife and Minamurra Falls. Take a walk to the Falls or head back into the Highlands. Moss Vale
Moss Vale, the Shire Capital
Moss Vale is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions and only a short drive away. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had disappeared by the 1870s, partly due to the loss of their hunting land to European settlers. Moss Vale holds a large part of the Southern Highlands Industry - as well as being a minor centre for agriculture, many light and medium industries are found in and around Moss Vale.

Bundanoon
Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

iFly4Kids 3 – 6 July @ the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk During the July school holidays the iFly4Kids program will present ‘Dinosaur Zoo’. Erth Visual and Theatre Company is an internationally renowned Australian Theatre company that creates incredible large scale, lifelike puppets of Australian mega-fauna. Erth will bring their celebrated show ‘Dinosaur Zoo’ to the Illawarra Fly for a series of performances. Dinosaur Zoo is a unique show allowing audience interaction with prehistoric Australian dinosaurs in a Zoo-like environment. Kids can pat the lifelike young dinosaurs which are lively, animated and affectionate. The star of the show is the Dwarf Allosaurus (155 million years old), a fearsome carnivore at the top of the food chain with the dramatic and abundant teeth to rip into its prey. Berrima A unique visitor destination Today, Berrima is a historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. It is a favourite destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents and has exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. In the 19thC, the township was destined to become the main town of the Southern Highlands, but when the railway line was built through Moss Vale in the 1860s, it faded to a sleepy village. The first Europeans to investigate the area were sent by the colonial governor, Governor Hunter. With a water supply provided by the nearby Wingecarribee River, a town plan, in the manner of an English village, was laid out by Robert Hoddle.
Few substantial houses were built, although by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the SurveyorGeneral Inn, in the centre of town, is the longest licensed hotel in NSW. By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage, so the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village by the National Trust. The most interesting period in the history of Berrima is perhaps when it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs during WW1. The Courthouse Museum and Berrima Gaol are still two impressive sandstone buildings which every visitor must see. Until a few years ago the gaol was still used as a prison. Robertson Robertson is the lushest of the Southern Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. It could be said that this was due to the prevalence of landholders with an Irish background. Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies. Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside.

hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Goulburn
A City Rich in Heritage!
Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and fine hospitality. The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest. The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards. By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new 56 www.monthlyimag.com.au
County Argyle. Today, it is home to the Big Merino and the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise. In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products. Goulburn Historic Waterworks is located on the banks of the Wollondilly River. It has fully operational steam engines; the 1883 Appleby Bros. beam engine and the 1860s Hick Hargreaves corliss valve engine. The beam engine dates to the 1880s when it was installed to pump water for Goulburn. The Waterworks is of national significance as it is the only complete, workable, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location in the Southern Hemisphere. There is a cafĂŠ on site as well as picnic areas and playgrounds.

Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is bordered by the Royal National Park, Lake Illawarra and the Illawarra Escarpment. The Mann-Tatlow Collection of Asian Art, on display until 20 July, celebrates ten years of the collection which includes Asian ceramics, objects and items of furniture from the Neolithic Period to the early twentieth century. Both hilarious and heartfelt, The Factory weaves a romantic narrative and clever lyrics into a tribute to the courageous Pacific peoples who came to Auckland in the 1970s.
