Tulip Time in Bowral

From the Editor September Be amazed and delighted at the colourful displays of thousands of tulip bulbs blooming for the annual Tulip Time Festival during the coming months. The Southern Highlands celebrates Tulip Time with a host of activities and there is so much to do this month, your feet will barely touch the ground. North of the Southern Highlands is the historic town of Camden. During September, it celebrates all that is wonderful about the area with a festival that runs for most of the month. Entertainment, kids fun and a street fair are some of what is on offer at this rich and diverse festival. The annual Goulburn Lilac Festival is one for the diary. Lots of fun, music, food and activities making this a must attend festival. As we are in the midst of the festival season, another one for the diary is the Charles Ledger Alpaca Show in Moss Vale. Come and see the beauty, strength and grace of the Alpacas and get ready to enjoy an entertaining day with a wonderful country atmosphere.

Robertson opens its spectacular gardens to the public and holds its annual Spring Fair in October. These events will surely please rail enthusiasts, garden lovers and those of you who enjoy a country fair. Bowral will host the Dan Murphy’s Food and Wine Festival early in September. The Festival will showcase not only wines, but also local produce and culinary demonstrations from local chefs. There will be arts and craft displays, live entertainment and more. The Dam Festival in Warragamba, in October, will feature a Car and Bike Show. Amusement rides for the children, market stalls for the parents and free entertainment will be on offer for this fun filled, day long event. While you are in the area, be sure to take the opportunity to enhance your stay by visiting a market, a gallery or a village, then lunch at a local winery while enjoying the taste of our cool climate wines.

Dam Festival Warragamba 21 October

Dam Fest is hosted by Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre Inc., a not-for-profit organisation providing services to the community. Featuring a Car and Bike Show with awesome trophies to be won, the show is enhanced by amusement rides for the children, market stalls for the parents, free entertainment all day long, and much more. Helicopter rides are available, flying

over the Warragamba catchment, this year at full capacity. There will be a free animal farm so children can experience first-hand interaction with a variety of animals. The Festival will have a very special visitor; ‘Rexie’ the baby T-Rex will be making an appearance. A feature of the day is the Billy Cart derby; always a thrilling event with lots of good hearted rivalry for the prizes. Experience the fire trucks first hand and a live fire display by the NSW Fire Brigade, reinforcing the serious lessons in fire safety. The Rural Fire Service, National Parks and Wildlife, and NSW Police have displays on the day and this is a great way for everyone to meet our ‘community protectors’ and learn something of what they do and the role they play in our everyday lives. Enjoy exhibits by these groups, as well as, Senior Citizens, Men's Shed, Warradale Art Group and many more. For an absolutely fabulous day out, take the drive to Warragamba and join in the fun. Held in the beautiful picnic grounds of Warragamba Recreation

Reserve you can experience the Visitors Centre and view Warragamba Dam. You will be amazed by the interactive display in the Visitors Centre, something nobody should miss; a truly amazing educational feature. One of the biggest food and wine events in NSW is on again in the Southern Highlands in September. After the worst wet weather in 60 years forced the cancellation of the muchanticipated, inaugural Festival in March of this year, the disappointment of organisers, exhibitors, stall holders and those planning to attend resonated near and far. For the Southern Highlands region, renowned for its award winning food and wine, restaurants, hospitality and talent, this original premier event created much excitement and a buzz throughout the Food and Wine Industry, so the timing of the rescheduling of the event was always going to be of the

utmost importance – March 2013, just seemed too far away. In light of this, major sponsor Dan Murphy’s has agreed to fast track the restaging of the event through additional sponsorship, enabling the event to be launched as originally planned in 2012. Robert Kay, President of the Southern Highlands Food & Wine Association, said “This initiative of the Association is a cornerstone of our plans to increase awareness of the Southern Highlands as a producer of fine wines and artisan food as well as home to many excellent restaurants, so we are very grateful to Dan Murphy’s and the other sponsors like WIN Television, Berrima Bus Lines, Radio 2ST, Southern Highland News and Kennards for agreeing to double-up on their sponsorship.” “The decision of sponsors to renew their support acknowledges the calibre of the event as well as the vast amount of interest generated for the March event as a showcase for the Southern Highlands Region and it’s exceptional Food and Wine Industry.’ In an exciting development, the Inland Tourism Barbecue Challenge, to be televised by the Nine and WIN Television networks, will also be a feature of the Festival in 2012. The two day festival will showcase the region’s exceptional food and wine as well as arts and crafts displays, retail outlets, live entertainment and plenty of activities for children. Complimented by a delicious undercover food court and a posse of talented award winning chefs on hand to demonstrate their culinary expertise and knowledge of local produce, there will be plenty to peruse, learn, taste and savour. Festivities will be set to the delightful Jazz croons of popular band Ella’s Holiday, live entertainment favoured by industry legend and local Geoff Harvey and most recently much loved comic Barry Humphries. The tantalizing, multi-awarded wines of the region will be available for tastings throughout the Festival with many a case finding a spot in the car boot for savouring post festival! Shuttle Bus services from Bowral Train Station to the Event will be operating on both days.

With six, hour long sessions per day, Mum & Dad can have a cup of coffee and watch on while the kids have a ball or make a snow ball! “The winter always seems to drag on and on, so we decided to make something of it and found a company that can lay down real snow. So for four days the Fly will be a Winter Wonderland!” said Neredith Elliot, GM Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk. “The snow

is refreshed in between sessions and at the end of each day, so our Winter Wonderland will always look and feel just like real snow!” she added. Session dates & times: September 26, 27, 28, 29: 9:00, 10:45, 12:00, 13:15, 14:30, 15:45 Cost is (includes the Treetop Walk): Child $15, Adult, $32 Senior, $26 Under 5 $5. For Groups of 10 or more Child $13, Adult $24 More information on Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures can be found at www.illawarrafly.com or phone 02 4885 1010

The Bradman International Cricket Hall of Fame just keeps getting bigger and better. If you’ve been before, you’ll know there are hours of entertaining and informative exhibits that reach beyond the game of cricket. But have you seen our newest section – The World Game? Here you can learn everything you need to know about other cricketing nations just by selecting the country on a huge interactive world map. And in October another new exhibit is coming: World Series Cricket. Relive the revolution as you learn more about the court cases, the controversy, the colours and the cricketers. It was an era that changed the game forever and introduced many of the features we now take for granted such as playing under lights and microphones in the stumps. After your visit, relax for a delicious meal in the Stumps café, wander around the iconic Bradman Oval, or let the kids burn off energy in the park and playground next door. The Bradman precinct is an easy walk from the tulips in Corbett Gardens. Why not make a weekend of it – accommodation packages are available. Visit www.internationalcrickethall.com for more information.

Historic Berrima

Berrima & Moss Vale

www.highlandsimag.com.au

Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

18 www.monthlyimag.com.au

Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Wollongong from the escarpment!

Wollongong

www.highlandsimag.com.au

Wollongong - where the mountains meet the sea! Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west. The Wollongong coastline offers 17 sparkling surf beaches that are patrolled by lifesavers from September to April. Beaches are generally in easy walking distance from shops, hotels and clubs. Stanwell Park to the north of Wollongong City, could be regarded as the gateway to the Illawarra region and is an ideal spot for day trippers. Bald Hill Lookout, a magnificent platform looking south over Wollongong City, has outstanding views of the Illawarra and its escarpment. Watch hang gliders and para gliders or marvel at the spot

where Lawrence Hargrave first took flight. Experience the Grand Pacific Sea Bridge, 665 metres over-the-ocean, near Stanwell Park; spend some time exploring northern coastal villages while heading down the cliff hugging roads hanging above the ocean. North of Wollongong the coastal villages are famous for their unspoilt beaches and rock pools, unique art and crafts, great fishing and surfing spots as well as many cafes and restaurants. From those northern villages, the Grand Pacific Drive makes its way into the city of Wollongong. There you will find an array of shopping outlets, restaurants and cafes, golf courses, art galleries and more. Garden.
