Garlic is growing! Garlic is now growing nicely over the winter period. Unlike most humans, garlic actually likes the cold weather and a frost or two is appreciated! The sprouts grow and grow, absorbing sunlight and trapping energy until spring, when they start to die off and the energy stored by the leaves goes into the bulb which is underground. Most of last season’s garlic has either been consumed by us garlic-lovers or has “re-spouted” in an attempt to grow again. However, one variety (which we call Grande) will last up to October. It’s a bigger variety and is great for roasting (like you might roast pumpkin or potato, etc). Grande is milder in flavour so it can be eaten whole, or used to make garlic bread. You can even place the Grande cloves inside a roasting chicken, with lemon quarters and thyme to make a hearty roast dinner on these cold winter nights. Yum! Cheese anyone? Quickes Oak Smoked Cheddar is a favourite of the English bunch. Initially this cheese can be quite smoky but then the awesome flavour of the fantastic quality cheddar shines through. 'The Huntsman' Fruit cheese lovers should try a White Stilton with Lemon Zest, lemon cheesecake anyone? Sweet creamy and tangy. And last but least ‘The Huntsman’ and as the name suggests a cheese for the man on the go. Blue Stilton encased in Double Gloucester, no time for mucking about with two cheeses lets smash em together and get outta here! For a full selection of exquisite cheeses and expert advice, visit the dedicated cheese delicatessen Gourmet or Glutton in Morpeth. See their ad on the Morpeth page 41. Visit Shop 2, 129 Swan St

Fun with Wine (and other things) If you haven’t tried the Portuguese chocolate mousse at Sabor then you haven’t been to heaven. Sabor is hidden down Wilderness Road and is the newest attraction in the Hunter Valley. Fernando and Renata made the tree change from Sydney after winning 11 medals at Sydney Royal Easter Show. Die for the best ever chocolate soufflé made with the world’s best chocolate Callebaut or a chocolate dipping plate of different house-made delights matched with a liquor Muscat. On a more savoury note and still on food the new seasons olives and oils are now out and about. Adina on Lovedale road processes most of the local olives and you can taste all of them there. Cold beer and chilli olives are terrific or perhaps try a crisp Verdelho with garlic olives. Another top tip is lemon myrtle oil - perfect to cook your fish in, to use as dipping oil or in salads. While you’re there try the caramelised balsamic vinegar especially with ice cream & strawberries or drizzled over your salad. “Wine improves with age – the older I get the more I like it”

Enjoy a drink with friends in the country Mount Broke Wines is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at one of the prettiest boutique vineyards in the Hunter Valley. Their tasting room is in the old milking shed from the days (not so long ago) that the farm was an operating dairy. The dairy cows have gone and shed is now cleaned up and is used for tastings, giving you spectacular views of the mountains across the vineyard and Wollombi Brook. The vineyard is right outside the door – all their wine grapes are grown on the property – with a string of awards from some of the toughest wine shows in the country. Mount Broke Wines also have their own range of olive oils and gourmet vinegars with olives, relish, jam and marmalade (seasonally available) for tasting. Espresso coffee, beer and soft drinks are also available. If you wish to make use of the picnic tables or barbecue; please let them know – they have all the cutlery and crockery if you need to borrow something! Groups are welcome so long as you book as this is one of the smallest of the Hunter Valley cellar doors and they do like to look after visitors. September: Topdress your lawn Topdressing your lawn will not only feed it but even out the lumps & bumps. Spread thinly (about 1/2 inch) over all of your existing lawn. It has the essential ingredients to enable your lawn to survive the hot summer months ahead. Aerate your lawn first with a fork, then apply top dressing. If you want the greenest lawn in the street now is the best time to plant it. Prepare your soil with a special blend of Lush Lawn Underlay and watch the grass grow before your eyes. At Gardenworld we recommend Sir Walter Buffalo, which can be ordered & picked up by the roll in small quantities, or in larger quantities delivered direct to your door. Feed your plants. Use some liquid fertilizer on veggies or quick growing plants. Sprinkle some slow release fertilizer, or Blood & Bone around shrubs, climbers and ornamental trees. Make sure to water in well, aerating the soil as you go. Feed your established fruit trees using a citrus & fruit fertilizer, or Thrive Citrus food. Enjoy your Spring garden - from ornamental fruit trees to eucalypts, camellias, grevilleas, rhododendrons and native wisteria. All the spring bulbs you have planted in May should be lining up to put on a show. On a larger scale, Hunter Valley Gardens puts on a spectacular spring display for September. Why not treat yourself to an amazing array of colour and scent.

Newcastle Newcastle is a vibrant cosmopolitan city which has everything from world-class surfing beaches, to the emerging food scene, Newcastle has it all. Explore and uncover the flavour and allure of the city’s streetscapes and waterfronts – each with its own feel and character. Five of the city’s pristine beaches are on the eastern side of the promontory. These include; Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle Beach, Bar Beach, Dixon Park Beach and Merewether Beach where there are swimming clubs, kite surfing, rock pools and baths, watching

www.hunterimag.com.au hang-gliders and surfing lessons. The Café culture is emerging with the most popular food areas in Darby Street in Cooks Hill; The Harbour waterfronts including Honeysuckle, Beaumont Street in Hamilton and The Junction. Newcastle is a city that embraces and nurtures creativity, and holds local arts practitioners in high esteem. Newcastle is host to a colourful and expansive array of art galleries, including the Newcastle Region Art Gallery, one of Australia’s leading

regional galleries. Much creative talent has originated in the city including the world-renowned band, Silverchair. Newcastle is all about the experience of different cultures and magnificent scenery. It is a place of attraction that can be enjoyed by everyone. ...will take you there!

Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. A monument to the event stands at Nobbys Beach and is a stop off point for visitors and locals alike. Nearby is the Harbour break-wall and Nobby’s Lighthouse, perfect for that afternoon stroll and the ideal vantage point to watch 300m cargo ships come into port. Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in Australia along with Merewether

Beach, home to the annual International Surfest competition. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round. One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers.

A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches. To keep up with the weather, tides and surf check out @NDays on Twitter!

Dam Festival Warragamba 21 October Dam Fest is hosted by Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre Inc., a not-for-profit organisation providing services to the community. Featuring a Car and Bike Show with awesome trophies to be won, the show is enhanced by amusement rides for the children, market stalls for the parents, free entertainment all day long, and more. Helicopter rides are available, flying over the Warragamba catchment, this year at full capacity. There will be a free animal farm so children can experience first-hand interaction with a variety of animals. The Festival will have a very special visitor; ‘Rexie’ the baby T-Rex will be making an appearance.

by prize-winning NZ playwright Jean Betts (with thanks to Wm. Shakespeare) Directed by Annie Bilton So was Eve responsible for the downfall of men and all the evil in the world? Shakespeare’s contemporaries may have thought so, but Jean Betts turns Shakespeare’s Hamlet on its head to give a new perspective on the world and turn tragedy into high comedy. Ophelia, our confused heroine, is poised on the edge of womanhood but has no idea what that means. Does bullyboy Hamlet love her? Or is he just enjoying tyrannnising her? What is it between Hamlet and his closest friend Horatio? And who is responsible for the love letters? Is there a way to find out what’s ahead for her - apart from reading the slime of snails? Verbal wit and farce erupt on stage in this brilliant parody of Shakespeare’s work, along with a hilarious cast of characters looted from Hamlet, including Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as croquet players and several ghosts, among them a misplaced St Joan. Ophelia Thinks Harder will play at Newcastle Theatre Company,

An Interview with Craig Reid 1. What motivates and inspires you to do what you do? My motivation is from a love of my sports and a desire to be the best I can be. In the sports of Highland Games and Strongman you can only ever compete against yourself. Sure you want to win and beat the other guys but intrinsically you have to be your best to have any chance and if you do your best than the results will follow. People overcoming adversity is an inspiration to me. 2. How do you fit in your training with your day job as a Police Inspector? I'm lucky that strength training is mostly individual. So I can alter and adjust my training to suit my shifts and work needs. The ability to be flexible is a must in modern life and training but this must be weighted against commitment to your goals and dedication to the cause. The biggest impact is not being able to consistently work with a training partner. 3. What’s next on the horizon for Craig Reid, strongman extraordinaire? The East Coast Heavy Events Championships, a full Highland Games at the Clans on the Coast Gathering at Nelson Bay on 15th September. Australian Championships at Castle Hill in November then off to NZ for November, January and February competitions. Then to Scotland for the Highland Games Season come July. 4. What does it mean to you to be a Novacastrian? I was born and bred here. Like hundreds of others I was a BHP apprentice and tradesman prior to joining the NSW Police. I have been lucky enough to see a fair bit of the state with work but they say there is no place like home and the greater Newcastle area is full of wonderful areas and people. My family is here so home is where the family is. 5. What do you love the most about Newcastle? My family is here so home is where the family is. I also love the city aspects with the more relaxed lifestyle and the best beaches in the world. 6. Do you have a favourite place to eat? A favourite watering hole? At home as my wife is a great cook. Other than that I like good basic foods and like eating at a number of our hotels in the area that all have great food. As for a watering hole I am more of a coffee drinker and attend a number of the varied shops throughout our town.

Photographer Paul Hollins Exhibition Paterson Gallery 21st Sept at 6pm

Paul was born and raised in Sydney but relocated to the Hunter Valley with his family in 1997. He purchased his first SLR camera in 1978, using it to chronicle life but it was once he converted to digital in 2003 that he says he felt the freedom to experiment with many new techniques. His work is inspired by impressive landscapes and the changing face of nature He also has a lifelong passion for cars which always affords him plenty of artistic opportunity. He is very enthusiastic this first exhibition and is excited at the prospect of exposing his work to a wider audience and thus expanding his own growth. His current work carries a heavy emphasis on the beauty and history of his local area. Paterson Gallery, 21 King Street, Paterson. Ph: 4938 5632 or visit www.patersongallery.com.au

Next stop is Warners Bay, a bustling town centre with cafes, restaurants and the finest boutique shopping in Lake Macqaurie. Warners Bay makes a great stop for lunch, you can dine in one of the eateries or grab some fresh takeaway and head down to the picnic tables by the water. I have had some great opportunities to be able to develop a variety of business in my many years of working life and when I was introduced to social media, I found there was this phenomenal way that I was able to extend my marketing so much easier and simpler via Social Media. It has taken me nearly three years to learn & understand the strategies that are needed to implement Social Media effectively into a business marketing plan. These strategies along with educating business on the “How” “Why” and “When” of social media is what I am developing in bringing a training school to the area. I have more than 32 years of business experience but the impact social media has on business is astounding… if used strategically and consistently. The Social Media Training School was created because of I developed a rich passion for social media and my objective now is to assist business’s through the social media haze. I hear constant misconceptions and uncertainty about what to do, but by establishing my training school I will give business owners, corporations, entrepreneurs, staff, organisations and non-profit organisations the “solution to the confusion”.

Wollombi Valley Wollombi Valley is an oasis of peace and tranquility just an hour and a half north of Sydney. It lies between the Watagan Forests and Yengo National Park, part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. Host to several boutique vineyards, It is the gateway to the Hunter wine area. Wollombi is a place where you can step back in time whilst

being pampered in top class accommodation or camp in the wilderness. To get to Wollombi follow in the footsteps of the convicts up the winding Great North Road through a sandstone and well timbered landscape. Take a moment to marvel at the convicts’ work as you enjoy views across farmlands reminiscent of times past.

Wollombi in for a Wild Ride The historic township of Wollombi will be in for a wild ride on the Saturday before father’s day, 1 September with the fourth version of this exciting mountain bike event to be held in and around Wollombi. Event organiser Paul Humphreys of local sports event company H Events said the event is being held to promote health and fitness and also promote the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance (HPCA). “It’s really the perfect event for the venue with outstanding scenery, safe but challenging tracks and trails and most of all a welcoming community”. In its fourth year the event is expected to grow the field size substantially across the three course distances designed for novice to experienced riders. The 15km course is designed to attract the novice and family riders who are after a bit of healthy fun. The course is mostly flat with some interesting trails. The 45km course is for a more regular rider who has the fitness to climb up dome difficult terrain and also navigate some rougher tracks and trails. The 75km course is intended for riders who have trained for the event

and have some experience in long distance mountain bike riding. The 45 and 75km events are also part of the National Mountain Bike Marathon Series, which includes 6 races across NSW and VIC. A range of event categories will be on offer with medals awarded and local produce up for grabs from local businesses. Staged from the back paddock of the home of the famous Dr Jurds Jungle Juice, The Wollombi Tavern, the post event activities will be as interesting as the ride. H Events will be staging FitROK, where competitors are given the opportunity to belt out some tunes or play an instrument in a low key ‘open mic’ type forum. Organisers are sure that there are plenty of people who enjoy keeping fit and also play music. “MTB riding is good for your heart and music is good for your soul, we want to encourage both.” says Humphreys. The event compound will be behind the Wollombi Tavern off 2994 Great North Rd with the 75km event starting at 8am. Broke Fordwich Spirit of The Vine 2012 Celebrating 10 years of spirited festivities

Broke Fordwich will host its 10th annual Spirit of the Vine festival on the weekend of 20th and 21st October 2012. The festival celebrates a proud Hunter Valley heritage, a strong community spirit and a deep connection with the land. Only 10 minutes from Pokolbin, yet a world away from the bustle of the Hunter Valley’s busy wine hub, the region of Broke Fordwich is usually known as the ‘Tranquil Side of the Hunter Valley’. But the region boasts a yearly program of festivals to put a spring into the step of any wine tourist. A Spirit of Place Spirit of the Vine celebrates the unique beauty of the Broke Fordwich region. Stunning scenery is a feature of every venue, with views of rolling pasture juxtaposed against the imposing rock features of the Brokenback range. The first recognized viticultural subregion of the Hunter Valley, Broke Fordwich has distinct climatic differences from the rest of the Lower Hunter, with cooler nights and lower rainfall offering excellent conditions for quality grape production. The area boasts several organic and biodynamic growers, including the largest organic vineyard in the Hunter Valley. A Spirit of Adventure Since the earliest roads to the Hunter were forged through Broke Fordwich, the area has been home to a great pioneering spirit. Today’s wine producers are experimenting with new varietals – from meditteranean staples such as Barbera, Sangiovese and Tempranillo to more obscure varieties such as Tannat, Lagrein and Touriga Nacional. Of course the classic varieties of the Hunter Valley are also well represented with some of the region’s (and indeed the world’s) oldest Shiraz vineyards a feature of the area. A Spirit of Community With just 12 cellar doors, the Broke Fordwich region is a close-knit wine community. Many of the cellar doors are owner operated and you may well find yourself talking to the producers themselves. They will regale you with the many stories and secrets of the 2 region - some of them even true.

Kurri Kurri Mural - 'Sunrise'

Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

Points of View: featuring the recent work of three established and highly respected Hunter artists - sculptor Vlasé Nikoleski and painters Christine Ross and Gordon Rintoul. The exhibition, running from 24th August until 30th September, explores the interaction between the natural and human environments. All three artists are former lecturers in Fine Arts at the University of Newcastle and are represented in national and international collections. Vlasé Nikoleski takes familiar elements and combines them into sculptures evocative of changing landscapes. His work varies in scale and medium, and includes bronze and stainless steel.

The new touring exhibition, Creative Power: the art of George Baldessin, brings to Maitland the art of one of Australia’s most influential and important printmakers from the 1960s and 70’s. The work of George Baldessin (1939 - 1978) is represented in all major art galleries and collections around Australia, as well as the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the British Museum in London. Baldessin is perhaps best known for his popular giant Pears sculpture at the entrance to the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. Despite his incredibly short life (he was 39 years old when he died in a car accident in 1978), he left a huge body of work which continues to impress and astonish with its contemporary feel The exhibition includes a selection of prints and drawings and is curated by Tess Edwards Baldessin the artist’s widow. The works in this travelling exhibition show the development of Baldessin’s various themes as well as his very individual style. From his first small etchings of circus performers and Fellini-esque characters, his work developed in scope and scale, passing through the “Personage” series, “Factory Smoke”, “Magdalene“and “Emblems” series. The exhibition will be on show in Maitland until 11 November 2012 after which the exhibition will tour extensively across the east coast of Australia for the next three years.

Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.

As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking. Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and

Tocal Homestead

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for

weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.

The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook. The Inglis Art Prize Friday 24th August - 5pm - 7pm. Scone Arts and Craft Centre. Open to Public - Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August 10 - 5pm Kingdon Street Scone, NSW, Australia More than 100 artworks have been entered in the Inglis Art Prize including a number of works from overseas pieces. This year’s theme is “At the Track”. The Inglis Art Prize has a prize package of more than $18,000 and is the brainchild of deputy chairman Arthur Inglis.‘‘It is something that I thought was a worthwhile addition to the landscape to bring together art and the horse world,’’ he said.

The inaugural Inglis Art Prize in 2011 proved to be highly competitive, with many outstanding paintings, portraits and sketches. Now in it’s second year the momentum continues to build. The works of finalists for this year’s prize will be exhibited at Newmarket, in Sydney, before moving to Melbourne and finally to the nation’s horse capital, Scone, during Horse Week Festivities in mid-May. Among the high profile artists with works entered is the Melbourne based Brian Clinton who chose the champion mare Black Caviar as his subject. The prize will be judged at Newmarket on August 9 and will be exhibited 24th to 26th August at the Scone Arts and Craft Centre.

The Australian Infantry Museum The Australian Infantry Museum will be closed to visitors from the 8th June 2010 to the 31st August 2011. For further details contact the Museum Manager Captain John Land. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum was established in 1911. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum has undergone many changes over its 97 years. Now located within the School of Infantry, the museum tells the story of the Infantry Soldier from colonial days through to current operations. The Infantry Corps new $13m museum showcases its history, equipment and contribution to Australia’s heritage. The building was opened by CDF Gen David Hurley at Singleton on September 1, coinciding with the anniversary of the centenary of the School of Infantry's opening. Six-weeks of bad weather hampered the completion of the museum and

pushed back the opening of the galleries to late October. The site displays the Infantry Corps’ extensive collection of 5500 catalogued items, including equipment, weapons, battlefield artefacts, training documents and soldiers’ stories. Throughout the galleries and exhibitions the profile of the Australian Infantry Soldier is displayed with actual weapons, uniforms, equipment, maps, medals, pictures, stories, personal letters and videos, as used during these operations. Other significant exhibitions include a historical display of the Royal New South Wales Regiment and the Royal Australian Regiment. Closed from 8th June 2010 to the 31st August 2011.
