April Hello and welcome to the April issue of the Hunter iMag, your free information for what to do in the Hunter over Eastertime. The holidays are always a fun packed time for all the family and this month there are a vast array of events including glorious regattas, live music and theatre, Easter markets and agricultural shows. For those of you who have a sense of adventure the Birdman spectacular at Hunter Wetlands on the 22nd April is an absolute must! Live music lovers will be looking forward to the Gum Ball at the end of the month – this family friendly, laid back event features bands, stalls, onsite camping, a kids playground and so much more! See page 35 for more details. For a great family day out visit the Tocal Field Day – it’s an agricultural show with a difference but don’t

forget to visit the historic homestead. Around 200 years ago olives were first planted in Australia. In the middle to late 1800s trees were imported from France, Brazil and Sicily. Most olive growers have a variety of trees in order to produce a number of different products. In the Hunter Valley we are lucky enough to have some of Australia’s finest olive growers and producers right on our doorstep. Many offer tastings and grove tours.

Adina Vineyard The trees at Adina Vineyard were already planted when Peter O’Meara took over the property and in the past six years he has planted many new varieties. There are now some 2500 trees on the property. Working with about 20 local growers, Adina has developed from a local vineyard and olive processor into an established wholesale business selling products under the Hunter Olives brand. Adina produces a variety of different table olives, tapenades and olive oils at its own processing facility. It is important that Olives are processed immediately to maintain the flavours and aromas of the olives and it is a requirement for certification of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. All olives start green and darken from dark purple to black as they continue to ripen. As the fruit progresses through these ripening stages it becomes softer in texture and the colour, in the case of the purple and black stages, penetrates deeper into the flesh of the olive. The earlier in the season the olives are picked, results in a brighter green oil with a more pungent and peppery taste. If you pick the olives later in the harvest season, the oil is a

Pukara Estate Pukara Estate, near Muswellbrook in the Upper Hunter is another olive producer processing its own olives. There are 26,000 trees in the large grove, but in Australian terms this is still considered a medium sized producer. Pukara Estate’s extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars are amongst Australia’s best, winning over 50 awards in shows nationally, including the prestigious Australian Olive Association National Show. Bunna Bunoo Bunna Bunoo is a family managed olive grove located on the Paterson River in the Hunter Valley. The hot summers and cool crisp winters of the area are ideal conditions for cultivating olives that produce the finest olive oil. The olives are harvested and processed within 48 hours. Generations of olive growing and processing results in this unique and superior quality product. The olive grove has 3500 trees established in 1997. The family grow five varieties of olives: Frantoio and Correggiola, and the table olives come from Jumbo Kalamata, Kalamata and Manzanillo trees. The olives are processed, bottled, labelled and packed at the grove in a new purpose-built facility. The olive oil is cold pressed locally and returned for bottling and labelling at the grove. All of the products are available from the shop, selected delicatessens and gourmet stores and by mail order. The shop is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 10 am and 5 pm, and weekdays by appointment. Tourist groups are welcome and tours through the grove can be arranged. In the Hunter olives are harvested in Autumn - early April, throughout May and into June which works well with the grape growing season are the grapes are harvested in late summer. During the first weekend of May in a beautiful setting at the foot of the Liverpool Ranges some of Australia’s top stockmen and women take part in an intense competition over three days, showcasing their skills and testing the relationship between horse and rider. This exhibition demonstrates the skills of Australia’s last remaining, relatively recently departed, surreal artist, James Gleeson. A close focus on an extraordinary vision is an opportunity to examine and investigate a select number of works of art gathered from only three owners - with one of these owners being a public art gallery. This exhibition features some truly magnificent artworks many which have only been seen recently by a special few behind the doors of private collectors who have generously allowed us to borrow the paintings for this one public exhibition. To accompany the exhibition

MRAG has designed an outstanding catalogue. Lou Klepac, author and regular supporter of MRAG and a member of the James Gleeson Foundation has written and published much on Gleeson. Ray Wilson who was the supreme collector of surreal Australian art and another member of the Gleeson foundation will open the exhibition. It is also his donation of annual funds for the Agapitos/ Wilson that has supported this exhibition and the printing of the catalogue. St James’ Church The historic St James’ Church in Morpeth has been hosting music concerts for ten. Their purpose has been to raise funds for the restoration and maintenance of the equally historic pipe organ, built in 1877 by William Davidson. The concerts have featured many distinguished artists both instrumental and vocal. The first concert for 2012 will be presented on Sunday 15 April, in St James' Church, at 2.30pm The artists are Tara Dickinson (flute) and Shaista Poonawaller (piano). Tara is studying for her Master of Music degree at the University of Newcastle.
