Hunter Region Markets
Where inspiration beams, the community shines and the trees are more than what they appear to be. Sacred Tree Markets is a unique culmination from a talented Energetic Healer/Teacher and a well respected member of the local wine industry. Both passionate about the Hunter Valley, good food, great times, happy kids, beautiful things and seeing people shine in their element. After countless hours traveling outside of their local community to visit numerous markets, sisters-in-law Penny Nowland and Ganga Ma, felt a desire to pull together their passion for the boutique, artisan and eclectic with their love of great food, wine, fresh produce and to see it being “home grown” in their local area. www.sacredtreemarkets.com.au

Coffee Shops in the Hunter
Real Coffee was established in 2000 with the intention of educating people about coffee. Our Barista Training, held monthly at our shop in Lorn, near Maitland, concentrates heavily on the grinding of coffee and how it relates to your machine. The 3 hour barista training includes a copy of Barista Techniques by John Doyle. In store our focus is home orientated - how to get the best out of a plunger, selecting the right grind for a stove top coffee maker and trying to get some decent coffee out of a home cappuccino machine. Six years ago we opened a coffee retail shop in Lorn, NSW. In store you will find Bodum plungers, Bialetti stove tops, Iberital and Compak grinders as well as the odd awesome home espresso machine - Vibiemme Piccolo, Junior and Rocket Giotto just to name a few. We are now offering this same selection on-line as well as our fresh roasted coffees, premium chocolate, library of coffee books and bits and pieces such as replacement beakers for Bodums, coffee keyrings, seals for stove tops and even t-shirts. For more info see the website realcoffee.com.au or find them on twitter @realcoffee

Tasting in the Hunter
What to do with Garlic scapes? Before you ask “Garlic what??” a scape is the stem like part of the garlic plant that shoots out of the middle of the leaves, including the flower. The bulb is under the ground. If you’re just after the bulb, then you might let the scape die off naturally. Some growers cut off the flower as soon as it appears, so all the energy goes into growing the bulb. Alternatively, the scape could be left on and, after harvesting, use the scape to tie and hang the bulb so that it dries naturally.
They don’t compete with stronger flavored ingredients, but rather compliment them with a sweet succulent character. For more info, recipes or to contact us, please email: info@huntervalleygarlic.com.au

We’ve cut and used scapes as flowers. They don’t have a fragrance or garlic smell, but they look really attractive as they blossom and they tend to last a long time. But you could use the scape in cooking. Consider wrapping bacon around the scape and frying. Or, it’s very popular in Chinese cooking as used in Stir-Fry. Or even use it in a Spinach, Pea and Scape soup. You can think of garlic scape as a leek or green onion. It has a mild fragrance and a mellow garlic flavour.

River Flats Estate Olives River Flats Estate is a family owned olive grove nestled between the yellow cliffs of the Brokenback Range and the Wollombi Brook at Broke. The grove of 3500 trees is comprised of a number of different, mainly Tuscan, varieties. The oil olives are harvested at their peak and cold pressed within a few hours to extract the Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil which has a superb fresh, slightly peppery taste, although very popular plain, they also flavour the oil to produce the Herb & Garlic, Lemon and Basil Oils. Their table fruit is hand picked and debittered the old fashioned way in brine, when they are happy with their flavour they are hand sorted and jarred, any marked fruit are made into tapenade. As the oil is unfiltered, the bottom layer of oil containing the particles is turned into a growing range of natural soaps they market under the brand Bare Nature’skin. There is an extensive range of gourmet condiments including Beetroot Relish, Pear & Fennel Chutney, Creamy Chilli Mustard and Caramelised Rosé & Balsamic Vinegars. The product range is always expanding now having some 30 varieties of olives and tapenades, 50 different chutneys, relishes, pickles, jams, mustards and dukkahs as well as a range of caramelized and gourmet vinegars. River Flats Estate have a retail outlet in Broke Village, “Pickled & Pitted “, and are sold at a number of farmers markets.

When The Rain Stops Falling An Australian Classic by Andrew Bovell It begins with a miracle. On a rainy day in Alice Springs in 2039 a fish falls like a gift from heaven to bless the reunion of a father and son who haven't seen each other for 20 years. Andrew Bovell's When the Rain Stops Falling explores how the voices of our past echo into our future. It describes how a single devastating event 80 years and four generations previous, together with the planet being ravaged by decades of abuse, turned that falling fish into a miracle. 90 D V S L P /F 4952 4958 Featuring Annie E: newrep@bigpond.net.au www.newcastletheatrecompany.com.au Bilton, Michael Byrne, Presents Samuel Conway, Tracey Gordon, David Gray, Peter Oliver, Phoebe Rafty, Paul by Russell and Emma Andrew Bovell Wood. Wollombi will be in for a wild ride on Saturday 7th September as this exciting mountain bike event to be held in and around Wollombi. Event organiser Paul Humphreys of local sports event company H Events said the event is being held to promote health and fitness “It’s the perfect venue for the event with outstanding scenery, safe but challenging tracks and trails and most of all a welcoming community”. The three course distances are designed for new to experienced riders. The 15km course is designed to attract the novice and family riders who are after a bit of healthy fun. The course is mostly flat with some interesting trails. The 30km course is for a more regular rider who has the fitness to climb up dome difficult terrain and also navigate some rougher tracks and trails. The 60km course is intended for riders who have trained for the event and have some experience in long distance mountain bike riding. A range of event categories will be on offer with medals awarded and local produce up for grabs from local businesses. Staged from the back paddock of the home of the famous Dr Jurds Jungle Juice, The Wollombi Tavern, the post event activities will be as interesting as the ride. Organisers are sure that there are plenty of people who enjoy keeping fit and also play music. “MTB riding is good for your heart and music is good for your soul, we want to encourage both.” says Humphreys. The event compound will be behind the Wollombi Tavern off 2994 Great North Rd with the 75km event starting at 8am. Event information and on line entries are available at www.wollombiwildride.net or contact H Events on 02 4934 8138.

Valley View, Cessnock
Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.
What to see and do in Kurri Kurri ■ Kurri Kurri is famous for its murals, which are a wonderful expression of the region’s history. Tours are available all year round. Kurri Kurri is the biggest mural town in Australia. Don’t forget to look for the Kookaburra in every mural – some are quite hard to find. To book a tour contact the VIC on 4936 1909. ■ Richmond Vale Railway Museum runs trains on the first three Sundays of each month from 10am. ■ Kurri Kurri farmer’s market is held the second Saturday of each month.

Dheo-Ka From 18th July until 11th August, as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery will present Dheo-ka, a stunning exhibition from Aboriginal artists across the Hunter Valley and beyond. Works will include traditional narratives of the seasons, locations, food chains, customs and ceremonies along with astrological and spiritual themes of the Dreamtime. It will combine this with works examining 21st century social and racial issues. The term Dheo-ka can mean meeting place or coming together, and the exhibition’s curator, highly respected Wonarrua elder, artist and teacher Les Elvin, has taken the opportunity to bring together an amazing group of work from a diverse and talented group of Indigenous artists.
The Touring Blake Prize From the 15th August, the Gallery will present the touring exhibition of the 61st Blake Prize. Named after the visionary artist and poet William Blake, The Blake Prize is the oldest national prize in Australia dedicated to spirituality, religion and cultural diversity and inspires conversation about the meaning and value of these elements within everyday life. The Touring Blake Prize includes thirty works from the 61st Blake Prize, as well as the winning and highly commended poems from the Blake Poetry Prize. Dheo-Ka runs 18th July – 11th August, The Blake Touring Prize runs 15th August – 29th September. Entry to exhibitions is free.

Morpeth Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth. As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and

Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town. Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's
