Australian Garlic is now in season and gloriously on the shelves! If you’re a garlic lover, then you’ll be salivating at the opportunity of indulging. What to look for in your garlic? Obviously, flavour is the most important factor. But it’s hard to taste when it’s on the fruit & veg shop, right? So, look for garlic that’s grown in Australia because it will be without chemicals like methyl bromide or bleaching, which takes out the flavour. Then, look for the organically grown garlic because it will be naturally more flavoursome. Garlic should be hard and dry. Any softness means it is rotting and not fit for consumption. Size is not so important. Bigger is not necessarily better. After all, you’ll probably chop the garlic cloves into little pieces before cooking. So, even if garlic is as small as a grape, it’s fine. Lastly, different varieties will have different flavours and strengths. For example, our Red variety has a stronger flavour and is best for mixing in with cooking. Alternatively, our Grande variety is milder in flavour and is great for roasting and eating whole. So, get going with garlic! Enjoy while you can as it runs out mid-year. Over 3 years ago when we began the landscaping part of our renovations we found a lone kiwi plant. Maree McCarthy from Nature’s Magic Garden Designs had some helpful advice for us that has finally born fruit. Kiwi fruit or Chinese Gooseberries grow on a vine and require a male and a female plant for pollination. Maree suggested we build an overhead timber trellis for the vines to grow on and fruit to hang down as an attractive and fruitful addition to our garden. We built the trellis, bought both Mr and Mrs Kiwi plant (being unsure exactly what gender our lone plant was) and left the 3 plants to harmoniously cohabitate with very little interference from us. Recently we have been delighted to spot tiny fuzzy balls of fruit and are at last rewarded for our long patience. They are too small to do anything except watch them grow but we are looking forward to sampling their bright green goodness! Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Lake Macquarie Lake Macquarie’s sea caves have been popular amongst locals and visitors in-the-know for decades, but the ‘caves’ are officially out of the bag this summer after being voted into a list of Australia’s ‘Top 40 Secret Spots’. The competition was run through Facebook by Hooroo.com, a travel website owned by Qantas. Kurri Kurri Mural - 'Bullocky'

Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843.
