Sleuth at Newcastle Theatre Company Two men, one woman, hundreds of thousands in jewellery… and a gun. But the only thing that matters to mystery writer Andrew Wyke is the game. And he’s about to play his biggest game yet. Milo Tindle (hairdresser and lover to Wyke’s wife) has been invited to Andrew’s mansion to talk – but is that all there is to it? The board is set, and the pieces are falling into place. Are you ready to play? Carl Gregory marks his directorial debut at Newcastle Theatre Company with Anthony Shaffer’s effortlessly entertaining Sleuth, a play that deftly mixes the dark and dangerous with the downright comical – the results of which will leave audiences utterly shocked. Spawning countless theatrical adaptations (and two feature films), Sleuth has cemented its place in theatre history as the ultimate battle of wits, with the audience walking away as the one true winner. The only mystery left to solve is why you haven’t booked your tickets already! BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL Ph 4952 4958. 3pm-6pm Mon - Fri. Book online at www.newcastletheatrecompany.com.au

of scenic Redhead is its historic sharklookout tower. A great beach for families, Redhead has a popular kiosk that overlooks the surf. Treat the kids to an ice-cream and take in the view. Blacksmiths Blacksmiths offers the best in both fishing and beach-going; its southern end is a long breakwall separating the beach from Swansea Channel. Anglers can fish off one side, whilst on the other families can enjoy the safe, patrolled swimming area. Caves Beach Caves Beach is home to sea caves and rock pools, known for providing hours of amusement for youngsters. The best time to access the area is at low tide – you can pick up a free tide chart from the Lake Macquarie Visitor Information Centre in nearby Swansea. Catherine Hill Bay Popular with local and visiting surfers, Catherine Hill Bay is a picturesque beach with rock platforms to explore at both ends. A unique feature of ‘Catho’ is the heritage coal-loading jetty; a photogenic reminder of the rich area’s mining history.

Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the last twenty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing
tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural town in Australia. There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia. New murals are currently underway. Don't forget to look for the kookaburra in every mural, some are quite difficult to find. To book a tour, enquire about projects contact the Kurri Kurri VIC 4936 1909.

Shooting Around Corners: Photographs by Mark Tedeschi 14 February – 27 April 2014
This exhibition is a comprehensive collection of Mark Tedeschi’s photographs which provide a sample of twenty-five years of his photographic work. During this period he has been a prolific photographer, which is especially remarkable considering the other side of this life as the Senior Crown Prosecutor for New South Wales, prosecuting some of the most criminal trials in the State. The photographs cover a white gamut of topics from Indigenous urban and rural communities to construct scenes of barristers’ extracurricular pasttimes and hobbies; from landscapes of urban decay to dramatic portrayals of the Australian desert; from portraits of prominent artists to delicate images of children and the elderly; and from intriguing domestic interiors to dramatic images of personal pathos on the streets of Northern Italy. Many of his images are enigmatic, humorous, and deep with subtle meaning, requiring the viewer to engage with them to fully appreciate them. His special ability is to move across cultural boundaries and engage with people from a wide variety of milieu. His numerous prizes and awards and other photographic accomplishments are a testament to his dedication to the art of photography. Free entry to the exhibition. Morpeth
Morpeth
www.hunterimag.com.au
Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth. As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and
craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking. Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town. Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's
most notorious criminals. Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days
of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo
