One of the best parts of my job is trying out new places to eat out with friends and family and the Hunter Valley is bursting at the seams with good cafes and restaurants. However, sometimes it can be difficult to find something really good on your own doorstep. The Platform in Raymond Terrace changed hands a while back but early February was the first time we had a chance to visit. What a great place! From the get go our small group were made to feel very welcome by the staff, whose service was impeccable all evening. We sat in the courtyard in the early evening, marveling at the incredible O T space right in I D R the heart of the Terrace and wondering why we om had never been there before. The m enda menu is large enough to be offer great variety without being overwhelming. We ordered slow cooked ribs, chicken and veal dishes. The food was awesome. We all thoroughly enjoyed it – and the ribs were a firm favourite. We’ve already decided to take other friends there – the prices are so reasonable and yet the quality is outstanding. It had a quiet, relaxing atmosphere – although we do know from other friends that you should really book to avoid disappointment. We were very impressed indeed and can’t recommend it highly enough. Next stop is to try it out for lunch – it’s a hard life! The Close, Raymond Terrace NSW 2324 Ph 02 4987 4618. www.theplatform.net.au

The only privately owned bakery in a gaol Blackbird Artisan Bakery is a tiny rustic business teaching old world cooking skills to new ageapprentices. We make long cold ferment sour dough, totally handmade. Our bread is low GI, low fat and simply delicious. We work in conjunction with Flinders Ranges Premium Grain – a tiny collective of 5 farms, 4 families in the lowest rainfall, most marginal wheat belt in Australia. Flinders Ranges Farmers produce a beautiful hard wheat which is well suited to artisan bread making. We deal directly with the farm and see first-hand the economic dynamics of this relationship. Our staff have enjoyed professional development visits to the farms during harvest so they understand the journey that our grain makes from the paddock to the plate; from the grain to the flour to our daily bread. This unique partnership gives us total traceability, accountability and reliability. We are justifiably proud of the opportunity to work directly with the grower and to directly benefit their bottom line. To complement our Australian partnership we use a French Rye Flour which produces fantastic rye breads. Everything we do is handmade, high quality and designed to make your belly smile! MARCH/APRIL PRODUCTIONS
Les Liaisons Dangereuses
March 14 - 28, 2015 The plot, set just before the French Revolution, focuses on the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, rivals who use sex as a weapon ofhumiliation and degradation, all the while enjoying their cruel games. Their targets are the virtuous (and married) Madame de Tourvel and Cecile de Volanges, a young girl who has fallen in love with her music tutor, the Chevalier Danceny. In order to gain their trust, Merteuil and Valmont pretend to help the secret lovers so they can use them later in their own treacherous schemes. It was filmed in 1988 as Dangerous Liaisons with a star cast lineup. One not be missed!
Cactus Flower
May 2 - 16, 2015 Toni Simmons believes the only reason her married lover won’t leave his wife is because of the children. In fact, her lover, dentist Dr Julian Winston, doesn’t have any children. In fact, Julian doesn’t even have a wife – he just tells women he does to avoid getting involved. When Julian does decide to take the plunge with Toni, she insists on meeting his wife, and Julian enlists the aid of his long time nurse/receptionist, Stephanie Dickinson, to play the part. After meeting Stephanie, Toni has more questions than are answered about her relationship with Julian. Meanwhile Toni’s next door neighbour, Igor Sullivan, has his own thoughts on what Toni should do with her life.

Lake Macquarie
A Day Out in Lake Mac There’s so much to see when you’re in Lake Macquarie, but for those short on time you can see plenty of what’s on offer in a day trip. Starting at the historical mining town of Catherine Hill Bay, go on a self-guided tour of this unique beachside town and soak up the history of the old mining cottages. Make sure you soak up the stunning views of the picturesque beach. Caves Beach is an easy ten minute drive away. Check the tides, and if it’s low tide, be sure to explore the sea caves. Go for a stroll along the beach and grab a coffee or breakfast at the Caves Beach Resort. Afterwards, head north on the Pacific Highway to Belmont. If you enjoy shopping, it’s worth stopping off at the city centre to have a look at some of the unique and boutique shops. There’s a variety of stores 18

Continue along the lake’s edge and take in the beautiful scenery. You’ll see some potential stop off points along the way at Valentine, Croudace Bay and Eleebana. If you feel like packing your own picnic lunch, these are all great places with great picnic facilities to enjoy. However, if you’re going to stop at one place along the way, it should be the village-feel town of Warners Bay, a 20 minute drive from Belmont. Warners Bay has a selection of boutique shops and cafes along the main esplanade, with a popular, family-friendly

Kurri Kurri & Cessnock to Wollombi
A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 24

up and dancing in the streets is just part of the fun! Our best dressed competitions are now so popular that we have four separate categories - Traditional Best Dressed, Junior Best Dressed, Couples Best Dressed and a pin-up section called Miss Modern Day, which recognises the growing popularity of the scene and allows for girls that incorporate reproduction clothing, tattoos and piercings in their look. There are great prizes in each category on Saturday and Sunday. Our special guest judge this year will be the lovely Shelley Minson, winner of Pinup America magazine photo competition. There are also a variety of night time dance and music events at local venues. A highlight is the return of the Rock N Roll Express, including a twilight steam train ride and live entertainment at one of the more unique local venues, Richmond Vale Railway Museum. A Culinary Experience... SABOR IN THE HUNTER, Pokolbin is set on Lambloch Estate, a 20 acre living and working vineyard on Broke Road with approximately 11 acres of Shiraz and Semillon vines that date back to the 1950s. Sharing this beautiful architecturally designed building with the Lambloch cellar door allows customers to come and not only indulge in dessert but also taste and buy some of the Hunter Valley's best wines. After opening the original Hunter Valley Dessert Bar in Lovedale, there was soon a need to grow. Not wanting to destroy the quaint and peaceful atmosphere created at Lovedale, the next best thing was to find a new location nearby. What better location than Pokolbin and the beautiful Lambloch Estate? SABOR IN THE HUNTER at Pokolbin is a modern, fully air-conditioned building with large sliding doors that can be opened to allow the soft vineyard breeze to come through. This location is slightly larger than Lovedale, which means large groups can be easily accommodated. Plans are in place to serve high tea in a dedicated room.
Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and indulge in desserts, coffee, tea and matching wines, not to mention (again) the breath taking views of the vineyard below as well as Brokenback Mountain Range. Over the last 3 years SABOR have grown their dessert menu to include over 50 different desserts, each one created individually as nothing is served by the slice. This brings a new level of culinary delight to desserts in the Hunter Valley. Indulge in multi-award winning Portuguese Chocolate Mousse, decadent cakes, pastries, hand-made chocolates, Portuguese tarts and gourmet ice-cream. A large range of gluten free desserts, barista-made Glinelli coffee and a selection of teas are available to enjoy in the fully air-conditioned dessert bar or to take away and savour in your home or hotel. Maitland Regional Art Gallery is one of NSW’ most dynamic public galleries for a myriad of reasons, the most significant of which is the building itself. The Gallery is situated on the traditional country of the Wonnarua people and, in all we do, we acknowledge their elders, past and present. The site is in the part of Maitland that was later settled by Europeans. From the 1830s it was a community focus – for commerce, for trade and then for education and the arts. Maitland City Council purchased the land and the 1910 Government Architect Walter Vernon designed building in 2002 to develop a cultural precinct. The Gallery (formerly established at Brough House in 1972) now continues the traditions of the building’s original intent. Two pre-existing buildings occupied the site. These tell a remarkable story about the change in architectural expression in the early twentieth century; the contrast between the civic ambition and rich architectural language of the 1908 building facing the main street and the stripped functionalism of the 1911 rear classroom block. The recent re-use includes an infill section to provide contemporary gallery accommodation sited between these historic buildings, in short unifying 3 sections as one building. From the cantilevered staircase made of Australian and Sicilian marble, the railing of wrought ornamental ironwork and polished Blackwood handrail or the stunning stained glass vestibule, the Gallery then boasts wonderful artworks and leading exhibitions. The staircase leads you to the Qing Dynasty Temple Doors and the more than 6 exhibitions changing every 8-12 weeks. Maitland Regional Art Gallery offers a plethora of visual experiences. And that is before you delight in the ambience of the much loved café by locals and the artisans in the unique shop!

They are racing at Gresford! Just north of Maitland, the village of Gresford is getting ready for the 2015 Easter Saturday Billy Cart Derby on the 4th April. The main (and only!) street will be closed off and given over to billy cart enthusiasts both young and old. Once a year Gresford comes alive to the roar of billy carts careering down the slope of Park Street on Easter Saturday - a great family day out. The event this year will be the biggest on record with more competitors racing in more classes and with a wide range of activities to keep visitors and pit crews amused. Entertainment will be based at the Hotel Beatty and Camyr Allyn Winery with live entertainment from 2pm to 6pm to guarantee plenty of fun even after the last billy cart is packed away in its transporter. Visitors can also enjoy the stalls run by local community groups, place a bet on the cowpat lotto, eat up at the barbecue, pick up a bargain at one of the stalls, see how far they can throw a gumboot and of course watch all the action unfold from 9am.
It’s not too late for inventive kids and adults to build their own cart. Entries close on the day. See the website gresfordbillycartderby.wordpress. com/entry-details/ for more details. Billy Cart and Easter Fair highlights: • Easter fair and Monster raffle • gum boot throwing competition, cow pat lotto • classic cars on display • check out the many stalls • monster garage sale • kids rides • live entertainment at The Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn Winery.

Sacred Tree Markets With a distinctly artisan flavour Sacred Tree Markets ran its first market of 2015 on February 15, with March and April markets being run on 15th and 19th respectively. Sacred Tree Markets organiser Ganga Ma states the markets have gone through a process of refinement over the summer break. “This year we have made a real commitment to showcasing high quality art & design. I am inspired by the slow fashion movement of Europe which embraces artisan trades, small run, and ethical fashion and holds sustainability and local values at its core. I am really keen to work within these fundamentals in 2015.” Ganga Ma suggests the movement urges customers to “choose quality over quantity” and consider the whole design process when making purchases. We live in a world where fashion is cheap but even if we are not immediately aware of it in many cases it comes
market with a wide variety of locally-produced, quality items. No imported items here. But we aren’t about judging it – we want to create an ethical space to give people an alternative.” Organisers have also made a commitment curb plastic bags & non-biodegradable packaging materials at the event. “This year we have asked stallholders to provide environmentally sound alternatives for their customers. We have installed both compost facilities & recycling facilities on site. “The girls and I are getting ready to get our hands dirty.” She says of the newly installed facilities.
