Brinawa Cheese Marook Farm - Hastings Valley, near Taree, NSW

What is it? Pasteurised, Hard, Washed Rind, Cow’s Milk Cheese made with Vegetarian Rennet. Why you need to know about it: Brinawa is made by cheese makers David Marks and his Swiss born wife Heidi Fallding on their 400 acre, biodynamic dairy farm. ‘Marrook Farm’ is hidden away in Elands, in the idyllic, hinterland on the Mid-Northern coast of New South Wales. David and Heidi use milk from their own herd of 60 red & white Ayrshire cattle to produce this 3kg round of Raceltte or Tilsit style,

semi-hard, washed rind cheese. Unfortunately due to market demand they are better known for their award winning, bottle fermented, probiotic natural yoghurt then they are their world class cheese. What it tastes like: Brinawa has buttery, complex, robust, rich flavour with herbaceous, pasteur driven, grassy aromas and a long lasting, well balanced mouth feel. You can buy Brinawa from Gourmet or Glutton in Morpeth – see their advert on page 31 for details.

Krinklewood Biodynamic Vineyard Biodynamics is a homeopathic medicine for agriculture, based on using natural means to obtain a better, more sustainable and healthier end product. Based on the Rudolf Steiner philosophy, it is believed that every plant is influenced by the two major energy forces in the world-the earthly & the cosmic and each individual farm is seen as an individual organism that should be as self–sufficient as possible. A Biodynamic farm should have a diversity of crops & livestock and one should give life to the other. Biodynamics recognizes that the soil itself is alive, and this vitality supports and affects the quality and health of the plants that grow in it. Biodynamic farming is organic, although it differs in that BD farmers use special Biodynamic preparations and they are applied at certain times of the year. The BD preparations act like a catalyst if used in the correct rhythm to improve the health of the plant or

increase the life in the soil, ie: Preparation 500 is made from cow manure, it is applied to the farm in droplet form in the late afternoon of a descending moon or when the moon is in opposition to Saturn. (For more detailed information on BD preparations used at Krinklewood see www.krinklewood.com) “To be truly biodynamic is to have a farm with animals all contributing to the food web, biodynamic cycle including pest control and management. At Krinklewood we have pigs, cows, sheep, geese, ducks, chickens, peacocks and bees! They all directly contribute to the living biology in our soil, and in turn, the health and of our vines and fruit that makes our wines.” Rod Windrim. Krinklewood is holding it’s 6th Annual Biodynamic Workshop on 26th May at their Vineyard in Broke, Hunter Valley. For more information contact carla@ krinklewood.com or see editorial on our website www.hunterimag.com.au

institution. Swansea RSL is well liked by the locals and is located on the Swansea Channel for stunning water views. Caves Beachside Hotel houses the fine-dining C Restaurant, or for something a little more casual, try the Caves Bistro; both have access to large outdoor decks overlooking the ocean. Belmont/Warners Bay One of the city’s largest town centres, Belmont offers an array of cuisines to suit all tastes. For traditional bistro fare with breathtaking lake views, try the Sails Eatery at the Belmont 16 Foot Sailing Club. The place for a casual brekkie or lunch and great coffee is Caffe Macquarie, while lovers of modern Italian and gourmet pizzas shouldn’t miss Salina Restaurant. Mum will especially love the ‘Kids Eat Free’ meal deals on Monday and Tuesday nights. Located on the northern shores of the Lake, Warners Bay is a lively hub of cafes, restaurants and takeaways. Dine in at a restaurant, or grab some fish and chips and head down to the foreshore for a picnic. There are several ice creameries in Warners Bay for dessert. Western Lake Macquarie With so many options to choose from, even the fussiest of eaters will find food to delight in on the western side of the Lake. Toronto has many waterfront eateries and the Royal Motor Yacht Club, while further south, Vita Pizza-Bar-Restaurant at Wang Wangi makes delicious stonebaked pizza and homemade pasta. Mum can relax on the outdoor deck overlooking Wangi Bay with a freshly poured tap beer or glass of the finest Hunter wine in her hand. Treetop Park

Business to Business TALKING BUSINESS by Brett Gleeson

Excellence pays off The pursuit of excellence in business has to be admired. We often come across people who are so passionate about what they do, they appear to be 'driven' to achieve at a high level. Second best is nowhere good enough, whilst cutting corners or knocking off early doesn't enter their thinking. Individuals and businesses who pursue and achieve excellence stand out from the crowd. The Lake Macquarie Business Excellence Awards are an initiative of the Business Growth Centre in partnership with the 7 Business Chambers around Lake Macquarie. When launching the Awards last December, the Mayor of Lake Macquarie, Greg Piper acknowledged that the Awards represented a wonderful opportunity to showcase the diversity and strength of the 12,000 businesses within

the Lake Macquarie local government area. The Awards offer 13 categories along with 3 major awards, namely the Young Business Person of the Year, the Business Person of the Year and the Business of the Year. The details and entry forms are available of the Awards website, www.lmbea.com.au. Entries close on Thursday 31 May at 5pm. The Awards have enjoyed tremendous support from the local businesses and government agencies, including the JSA group as major sponsor with support from Lake Macquarie City Council and TAFE NSW-Hunter Institute and 20 other business sponsors. Todate, over $60,000 in prizes have been donated by 9 local businesses. The Awards will be presented at a Gala Dinner on Saturday 21st July at Belmont 16 Foot Sailing Club. The Awards are about demonstrated excellence, not popularity. Each category will have a panel of independent judges. This is a great opportunity for businesses to showcase their excellence and reap the rewards. Until next month, Brett Gleeson Centre Manager Business Growth Centre www.mybgc.org.au

Winter Art Bazaar Sunday June 10 Hunter Arts Network (HAN) first Winter Art Bazaar will be held in the grounds of the impressive Maitland Regional Art Gallery, High St Maitland. It is the premier opportunity for Hunter arts, craft and design practitioners and artsrelated organisations to showcase their work. In its 10th year, Art Bazaar is the Hunter's only dedicated artisan market now with over 80 artists showcasing their works in a vibrant market atmosphere. “Art Bazaar continues to grow and has both experienced and emerging artists” said Leah Fawthrop, President of HAN “all participants need to go through a formal application process assessed by a panel of Art Professionals in order to participate - this way HAN can guarantee a very high standard.” HAN artists practice in a wide range of mediums that include: painting, photography, printmaking, textiles, mosaics, jewellery, glass and many more. TAFE students from the School of Fine Art, are also participating giving them great experience in the commercial realities of the art world.

Art Bazaar is a perfect opportunity to buy unique gifts, direct from the creator. So come and enjoy the atmosphere of a world class Gallery and meet the Artisans of the Hunter. The onsite café will be serving breakfast and lunch and will also have an extra food stall available in anticipation of the crowds. ART BAZAAR has become a highly anticipated event for both the public and the participating stallholders. It stimulates the arts community by increasing public awareness of the Hunter’s diverse artistic culture, successfully displaying art groups, organisations, businesses and many individual artists. 9.30am until 3pm, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, High St, Maitland Contact Leah Fawthrop on 0408 653 605 or president@hunterartsnetwork.org

Wollombi is a place where you can step back in time whilst being pampered in top class accommodation or camp in the wilderness. Take a moment to marvel at the convicts’ work as you enjoy views across farmlands reminiscent of times past. Whether you take a picnic lunch, dine at a high-class restaurant, experience a local pub or explore the Aboriginal heritage there will be something for you in Wollombi. MAITLAND REGIONAL ART GALLERY 26

www.monthlyimag.com.au

This exhibition demonstrates the skills of Australia’s last remaining, relatively recently departed, surreal artist, James Gleeson. A close focus on an extraordinary vision is an opportunity to examine and investigate a select number of works of art gathered from only three owners - with one of these owners being a public art gallery. This exhibition features some truly magnificent artworks many which have only been seen recently by a special few behind the doors of private collectors who have generously allowed us to borrow the paintings for this one public exhibition. To accompany the exhibition

MRAG has designed an outstanding catalogue. Lou Klepac, author and regular supporter of MRAG and a member of the James Gleeson Foundation has written and published much on Gleeson. Ray Wilson who was the supreme collector of surreal Australian art and another member of the Gleeson foundation will open the exhibition. It is also his donation of annual funds for the Agapitos/ Wilson that has supported this exhibition and the printing of the catalogue. Ray Wilson is, and the late James Agapitos are, the first MRAG patrons. Do not miss this singular, unprecedented and fantastic exhibition ….. and please enjoy.

Morpeth

www.hunterimag.com.au

Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.

As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking. Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and

Tocal Homestead

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal

Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food

and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay. The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook. For more information on the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, please go to www.apvt.com.au
