Get excited for the school holidays! From the Editor Happy New Year and welcome to the first issue of 2016. I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season. As readers and advertisers of iMag transition into a new year, so does the iMag team. It is with excitement and enthusiasm that I introduce myself as the new editor of Hunter iMag. With a background in marketing, management and publishing it is my ambition to further add value, and continue the professional work of the Hunter iMag team. My husband and I made this region our home 19 years ago and feel thankful to bring up our children in this beautiful part of the world. We love getting out and about exploring what it has to offer, and after all this time I still enjoy playing “Tour Guide” to visiting family. There is a lot on these holidays. In the coming months Newcastle is host to Surfest, Cirque

coffee flavour will dissipate and ruin the balance of the blend. Quite often the components of the coffee machine in addition to the coffee cup are cold when pouring the coffee, this will create an insipid flavour as the heat from the water is absorbed by the metals and ceramic before it can deliver your espresso. A well made espresso coffee (the base of cafe coffee drinks) should reflect the nuances of the blend. Hunter Blend, one of the blends served at Real Coffee and roasted by River Roast, Maitland displays a fullness of flavour that is balanced, sweet and bold.

Many people think of coffee as bitter. It is true that caffeine as a pure product is bitter, however caffeine only makes up less than 2% of the coffee bean. Generally the bitterness in coffee is due to it being poorly prepared. For instance if you run too much water through the coffee grounds the

One of the Hunter Blend's main components is Indian coffee which has, as you may expect, a spicy nature. The spice is balanced by Central and South American coffees which are more renowned for their sweetness and fruity flavours. Due to the balance created by the blend of coffees Hunter Blend is suitable for all styles of coffee making - it’s a great all rounder with an exceptional crema and longevity in the bag (it ages gracefully). River Flats Estate is a family owned olive grove nestled between the yellow cliffs of the Brokenback Range and the Wollombi Brook at Broke. The grove of 3500 trees is comprised of a number of different, mainly Tuscan, varieties. Marian Waite and her daughter Michelle, own and live on the property and maintain the olive grove, process the olive products and retail them through 'Pickled & Pitted'. The oil olives are harvested at their peak and cold pressed within a few hours to extract the Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil which has a superb fresh, slightly peppery taste. Although very popular in its pure form, flavours are introduced to the oil to produce variations such as Herb and Garlic, Lemon and Basil oils. Pickled & Pitted 'Pickled & Pitted' is Riverflats Estate's retail store and is located in Broke Village. The product range now has a number of varieties of olive oil, olives and tapenades, along with 50 different chutneys, relishes, pickles, jams, mustards and dukkahs, plus

A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 18

Faith, fashion, fusion: Muslim women’s style in Australia, a travelling exhibition developed by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Sydney. From swimwear and denim to elegant red carpet dresses, Faith, fashion, fusion: Muslim women’s style in Australia showcases the emerging modest fashion market and the work of a new generation of Muslim designers and entrepreneurs making a mark on the local fashion industry with their stylish clothing ranges for Muslim women. Glynis Jones, curator of Faith, fashion, fusion at the Powerhouse Museum, said: “The words ‘faith’ and ‘fashion’ do not often appear in the same context. This exhibition illustrates they are not incompatible; ‘modest fashion’ is one of the global fashion industry’s largest growth areas.” “It’s also interesting to see the market for these designers is not limited to Muslim women but has broader appeal for woman looking for looser fitting fashionable clothing that offers more coverage.” The exhibition was developed in consultation with a wide range of individuals from Australian Muslim communities and organisations who provided advice and assistance and generously gave their time to share stories, lend objects and take part in the filming and fashion shoots that make the exhibition so visually and emotionally rich. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. This summer, MRAG brings together 20 artists across 6 exhibitions, hosting more than 40 events. Free Art January is the signature month-long event that will see a pop-up fun park, entertainment and a hint of the unexpected. Great atmospheres, café, amenities, stunning gallery shop are just part of the experience.
