Tasting in the Hunter Garlic harvest is here! It’s getting hotter and it’s a sure sign that garlic is ready to harvest. All your hard work getting them to this stage is coming to fruition (excuse the pun!) The first signs you’ll see when garlic is ready to harvest is the drying out and dying of the leaves. This process will start at the lowest leaves, and then make their way up the stem. The bulbs should be picked with 2 or 3 leaves still green. You can also feel the garlic while it’s in the ground. Just wipe the soil back to reveal the bulb but try not to disturb the roots. If the bulb feels hard and cloves are making the bulb look a little lumpy, then it’s another sign that the garlic is ready. If you’re digging them out by hand, try not to hit the garlic with any digging tools as it might bruise or even penetrate the garlic, which will

lead to rot and allow disease and insects to attack. Most growers hang their bulbs (bulb down) in bunches of 6-8, however, we cut the leaves and the roots off, and then allow them to dry on a rack. Either way, allow them to hang in a dry, well ventilated area. The drying process should take 3-4 weeks or until the outer skin comes away easily in your hand. Now comes the fun bit; eating it! Snails - the European experience! For most of us, snails are considered a bit of a delicacy – indulged by Europeans and possibly not something we’d consider trying at a restaurant in the Hunter, thousands of kms away from were the French first thought of turning these odd little molluscs into fancy fine dining. Red Ripe Strawberries... Summer brings to mind a colourful array of delicious fresh fruit. Strawberries are a favourite and our Miss 3 has been enjoying (impatiently) the pleasure of watching our fledgling strawberry plant flower and grow fruit. Slowly turning from green to red and when the sun has warmed it perfectly….plucking it with her tiny fingers and popping it in her mouth! It’s hard to consider ever buying them again. Warmed by the sun, big, red and juicy is the best way to enjoy strawberries. Local Adamstown gardener, Peter, took us on a tour of his backyard garden and we sampled 3 varieties of strawberries straight from the bush. The ‘Juliette’, ‘Hokowase’ and ‘Sumo’ were all equally delicious and we left Pete’s with an arm full of freshly picked strawberries, tomatoes and a jar of homemade strawberry jam. The darker side of these red luscious gems is that conventionally grown strawberries are sprayed with pesticides and are on the ‘dirty dozen’ list of fruit and veg with the highest pesticide residue. Washing doesn’t necessarily remove all of these pesticide residues. Organically grown strawberries are the best way to avoid pesticides. Choose Organic Strawberries or better yet… grow your own! Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round. One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers.

The National Maritime Festival has evolved into one of the largest Maritime events in Australia; and the people of Newcastle and the Hunter Region have continued to support and celebrate this rich and diverse maritime heritage each year. The Festival provides a link between Newcastle's maritime heritage and an opportunity for active participation with benefits for education, cultural integration and community involvement. At its simplest, the National Maritime Festival provides a welcome spectacle and a day of entertainment and involvement for many, many thousands of Novocastrians as well as visitors from interstate and overseas. This year’s (2013) National Maritime Festival will have a strong ‘need for speed’! Top of the agenda is the Australian Water-ski Championships. The Royal Australian Navy will be showing off two of their Mine Hunters (built right here in Newcastle!) Of historical interest is the Heritage Express Train departing Sydney at 9am on the 26th and arriving in Newcastle at 11am (who remembers the Newcastle Flyer? Well this is it!) Tickets are still available but be quick! The all time favourite; Tug Ballet will be dancing with Newcastle’s School of Dance & Baby Ballerinas. Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular! Over 250,000 lights have been added to this year’s Christmas Lights Spectacular at Hunter Valley Gardens ensuring that the event, with over 1.25 million lights in total, will be the best yet! The Gardens will be filled with vibrant colour, incredible light and sound displays every night until Saturday 26th January, 2013 (excluding Christmas Day and night). In its sixth year, Christmas Lights Spectacular is the largest lights display in the Southern Hemisphere, making it a must see for the entire family and a great way to kick start that festive season. The much anticipated event has won the prestigious Hunter Region Tourism Award for ‘Best Major Festival or Event’ for 2009, 2010 and 2011 earning it a place in the Hall of Fame within this category. Hunter Valley Gardens General Manager, Kyle McKendry says, “This year will be bigger, brighter and better than previous years. Newcastle Youth Orchestra’s launch in 2013 Distinguished Newcastle Conservatorium of Music alumni and students of Newcastle’s ‘hay day’ of classical music remember fondly the afternoons spent in rehearsals in the city’s youth orchestras. The social buzz, the inspiring teachers and musicians who would often volunteer their time to foster a love of the most challenging orchestral repertoire. Sadly, Newcastle currently lacks an ensemble to rival the nation’s leading youth orchestras. Not for lack of talent either. Fortunately, in 2013 the Newcastle Youth Orchestra will be launched for

a season of four public concerts. It will feature musically gifted students between the ages of 14 and 25 who are currently being recruited from schools all around the Hunter region. Redhead Named for its distinctive red rocky headland, a widely recognised feature of Redhead is its historic shark-lookout tower. A great beach for families, Redhead has a popular kiosk that overlooks the surf. Treat the kids to an icecream with a view. A unique feature of ‘Catho’ is the old coal-loading jetty; a photogenic reminder of the area’s mining history. With 174 kilometres of foreshore, there are also plenty of spots to get your feet wet around the lake. The eastern shores around Swansea, Pelican and Marks Point are home to secluded, sandy bays and beautiful, clear blue water. The western shores are quiet and tranquil, with bushland running right up to the water in many places.

Kurri Kurri Mural - 'Bullocky'

Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the TRAIL OF ART, which opens at the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery on Thursday 24th January 2013, is a multidimensional exhibition that showcases the combined talents of eighteen local professional artists who together form the Art Trail network. This community of painters, jewelers, printmakers, glassblowers, silversmiths and ceramicists stretches across the Lower Hunter Valley from Rothbury to Ellalong. They recently joined forces to create a linked trail of open art studios across the Valley’s vineyards. The Lower Hunter Art Trail presents an opportunity to experience the vast range of processes and techniques that

last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

GW Bot has a close connection with the Australian landscape and uses her own personal language as a means to depict it. The garden is an important aspect of her work “all of my work is intimately interrelated thematically and essentially deals with questions of environments - personal and public - and an individual›s path through these environments as an allegory for a person›s passage through life. Much of my work is involved in a conversation between private landscape cultivated, enclosed, full of possibilities and the wilderness - infinite, wild and unpredictable. The paddock forms a curious middle ground. I am particularly interested in ‹entrances› into the landscape as a passageway between worlds.” The exhibition GW Bot: the long paddock A 30 YEAR SURVEY is a touring exhibition developed by Goulburn Regional Art Gallery and curated by Peter Haynes. While her earlier works contained motifs and symbols, her recent work has evolved from the more literal figurative representations of the 80s to the almost pure ‘glyph-marking’ that we see now.
