Tasting in the Hunter Garlic harvest is here! It’s getting hotter and it’s a sure sign that garlic is ready to harvest. All your hard work getting them to this stage is coming to fruition (excuse the pun!) The first signs you’ll see when garlic is ready to harvest is the drying out and dying of the leaves. This process will start at the lowest leaves, and then make their way up the stem. The bulbs should be picked with 2 or 3 leaves still green. You can also feel the garlic while it’s in the ground. Just wipe the soil back to reveal the bulb but try not to disturb the roots. If the bulb feels hard and cloves are making the bulb look a little lumpy, then it’s another sign that the garlic is ready. If you’re digging them out by hand, try not to hit the garlic with any digging tools as it might bruise or even penetrate the garlic, which will

lead to rot and allow disease and insects to attack. Most growers hang their bulbs (bulb down) in bunches of 6-8, however, we cut the leaves and the roots off, and then allow them to dry on a rack. Either way, allow them to hang in a dry, well ventilated area. The drying process should take 3-4 weeks or until the outer skin comes away easily in your hand. Now comes the fun bit; eating it! Snails - the European experience! For most of us, snails are considered a bit of a delicacy – indulged by Europeans and possibly not something we’d consider trying at a restaurant in the Hunter, thousands of kms away from were the French first thought of turning these odd little molluscs into fancy fine dining. You may not know but snails are grown right here in the Hunter by Helen and her dedicated team of farmers at Snails Bon Appetit. That means that if they’re on the menu in this region then they most likely come from right on our doorstep! So why not give them a go? Sure, they can be a bit tricky to manage depending on how they are served of course, but for that truly authentic European experience try them at La Belle Epoque – the new French restaurant in Newcastle.

Red Ripe Strawberries... Summer brings to mind a colourful array of delicious fresh fruit. Strawberries are a favourite and our Miss 3 has been enjoying (impatiently) the pleasure of watching our fledgling strawberry plant flower and grow fruit. Slowly turning from green to red and when the sun has warmed it perfectly….plucking it with her tiny fingers and popping it in her mouth! It’s hard to consider ever buying them again. Warmed by the sun, big, red and juicy is the best way to enjoy strawberries. Local Adamstown gardener, Peter, took us on a tour of his backyard garden and we sampled 3 varieties of strawberries straight from the bush. The ‘Juliette’, ‘Hokowase’ and ‘Sumo’ were all equally delicious and we left Pete’s with an arm full of freshly picked strawberries, tomatoes and a jar of homemade strawberry jam. The darker side of these red luscious gems is that conventionally grown strawberries are sprayed with pesticides and are on the ‘dirty dozen’ list of fruit and veg with the highest pesticide residue. Washing doesn’t necessarily remove all of these pesticide residues. Organically grown strawberries are the best way to avoid pesticides. Choose Organic Strawberries or better yet… grow your own! Bar Beach Newcastle

Newcastle Newcastle is a vibrant cosmopolitan city which has everything from world-class surfing beaches, to the emerging food scene, Newcastle has it all. Explore and uncover the flavour and allure of the city’s streetscapes and waterfronts – each with its own feel and character. Five of the city’s pristine beaches are on the eastern side of the promontory. These include; Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle Beach, Bar Beach, Dixon Park Beach and Merewether Beach where there are swimming clubs, kite surfing, rock pools and baths, watching

www.hunterimag.com.au hang-gliders and surfing lessons. The Café culture is emerging with the most popular food areas in Darby Street in Cooks Hill; The Harbour waterfronts including Honeysuckle, Beaumont Street in Hamilton and The Junction. Newcastle is a city that embraces and nurtures creativity, and holds local arts practitioners in high esteem. Newcastle is host to a colourful and expansive array of art galleries, including the Newcastle Region Art Gallery, one of Australia’s leading

regional galleries. Much creative talent has originated in the city including the world-renowned band, Silverchair. Newcastle is all about the experience of different cultures and magnificent scenery. It is a place of attraction that can be enjoyed by everyone. ...will take you there!

Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. A monument to the event stands at Nobbys Beach and is a stop off point for visitors and locals alike. Nearby is the Harbour break-wall and Nobby’s Lighthouse, perfect for that afternoon stroll and the ideal vantage point to watch 300m cargo ships come into port. Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in Australia along with Merewether

Beach, home to the annual International Surfest competition. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round. One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers.

A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches. To keep up with the weather, tides and surf check out @NDays on Twitter!

The National Maritime Festival has evolved into one of the largest Maritime events in Australia; and the people of Newcastle and the Hunter Region have continued to support and celebrate this rich and diverse maritime heritage each year. The Festival provides a link between Newcastle's maritime heritage and an opportunity for active participation with benefits for education, cultural integration and community involvement. At its simplest, the National Maritime Festival provides a welcome spectacle and a day of entertainment and involvement for many, many thousands of Novocastrians as well as visitors from interstate and overseas. This year’s (2013) National Maritime Festival will have a strong ‘need for speed’! Top of the agenda is the Australian Water-ski Championships. The Royal Australian Navy will be showing off two of their Mine Hunters (built right here in Newcastle!) Of historical interest is the Heritage Express Train departing Sydney at 9am on the 26th and arriving in Newcastle at 11am (who remembers the Newcastle Flyer? Well this is it!) Tickets are still available but be quick! The all time favourite; Tug Ballet will be dancing with Newcastle’s School of Dance & Baby Ballerinas. The Quick and Dirty Boat Building Competition that produced record crowds in 2012 is set for another challenge – Noakes Newcastle are the current trophy holder. So grab your flag and head on down to the foreshore for the biggest Maritime event in NSW!! www.nationalmaritimefestival.org.au www.maritimecentrenewcastle.org.au

Newcastle Youth Orchestra’s launch in 2013 Distinguished Newcastle Conservatorium of Music alumni and students of Newcastle’s ‘hay day’ of classical music remember fondly the afternoons spent in rehearsals in the city’s youth orchestras. The social buzz, the inspiring teachers and musicians who would often volunteer their time to foster a love of the most challenging orchestral repertoire. Sadly, Newcastle currently lacks an ensemble to rival the nation’s leading youth orchestras. Not for lack of talent either. Fortunately, in 2013 the Newcastle Youth Orchestra will be launched for

a season of four public concerts. It will feature musically gifted students between the ages of 14 and 25 who are currently being recruited from schools all around the Hunter region. Interested musicians can apply by emailing nyo@nima.org.au or finding the Newcastle Youth Orchestra on Facebook. The Newcastle Youth Orchestra is also seeking sponsorship and donations from musically appreciative members of the greater community! Don’t let the opportunity to support this emerging ensemble slip away!

Catherine Hill Bay, Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie Summer in Lake Macquarie revolves around the water. A natural aquatic playground, Lake Macquarie is twice the size of Sydney Harbour, bordered in the east by over 30 kilometres of pristine coastline. There’s nothing like a refreshing swim as the perfect antidote to a hot summer’s day. Lake Macquarie has an abundance of places to go for a dip, including four patrolled, family-friendly beaches. All of them offer something unique, so be sure to experience each one while you visit:

The Brighton is situated on Toronto’s foreshore, offering glorious views of Lake Macquarie and surrounding parkland. The Brighton is perfectly located just minutes off the freeway and within reach of many wonderful day trip destinations. Redhead Named for its distinctive red rocky headland, a widely recognised feature of Redhead is its historic shark-lookout tower. A great beach for families, Redhead has a popular kiosk that overlooks the surf. Treat the kids to an icecream with a view. Blacksmiths Blacksmiths offers the best in both fishing and beach going; its southern end is a long breakwall dividing the beach from the Swansea Channel. Anglers can fish from one side, while others will enjoy the patrolled area, home of one of the strongest surf lifesaving clubs in the area. Caves Beach Caves Beach is home to the magical sea caves and rock pools, known for providing hours of amusement and exploration for youngsters. The best time to access the area is on a low tide – you can pick up a free tide chart from the Lake Macquarie Visitor Information Centre in Swansea. Catherine Hill Bay Popular with local and visiting surfers, Catherine Hill Bay is a picturesque beach with rock platforms to explore at both ends. A unique feature of ‘Catho’ is the old coal-loading jetty; a photogenic reminder of the area’s mining history. With 174 kilometres of foreshore, there are also plenty of spots to get your feet wet around the lake. The eastern shores around Swansea, Pelican and Marks Point are home to secluded, sandy bays and beautiful, clear blue water. The western shores are quiet and tranquil, with bushland running right up to the water in many places.

Lovedale Lovedale is a beautiful part of the Hunter Valley. Only 2 hours from Sydney and close to Pokolbin it is a peaceful haven of visual, culinary and fine alcoholic pleasures. The area boasts a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets, plenty of activities for all the family and of course the very best in food and wine all served up with the warmest welcome and outstanding service. Spending a little time in Lovedale lets you truly unwind whilst offering the perfect opportunity to delight (and indulge!) the senses. Take your time to savour the exquisite wines at Gartelmann’s or relax as you sample the delicious desserts at Sabor’s Dessert Bar… We recently dined at Emma’s of Lovedale with our family and knew we were on to a winner as soon as we walked through the door. We were made to feel instantly at home and throughout the evening nothing was too much trouble, even though the restaurant was very busy. We loved the menu – the Bavarian Pan went down a storm at our table – and then to sit outside in the early evening cool breeze overlooking the gorgeous gardens enjoying delicious desserts and cheese with friendly banter all around was simply the best way to end a perfect evening. This is definitely a hidden gem in Lovedale and gets our “Editor Recommends! seal of approval. For the full review see our website www.hunterimag.com. au and look out next month for information on our visit to Gartelmann’s Vineyard.

Kurri Kurri Mural - 'Bullocky'

Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the TRAIL OF ART, which opens at the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery on Thursday 24th January 2013, is a multidimensional exhibition that showcases the combined talents of eighteen local professional artists who together form the Art Trail network. This community of painters, jewelers, printmakers, glassblowers, silversmiths and ceramicists stretches across the Lower Hunter Valley from Rothbury to Ellalong. They recently joined forces to create a linked trail of open art studios across the Valley’s vineyards. The Lower Hunter Art Trail presents an opportunity to experience the vast range of processes and techniques that

last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

What to see and do in Kurri Kurri ■ Kurri Kurri is famous for its murals, which are a wonderful expression of the region’s history. Tours are available all year round. Kurri Kurri is the biggest mural town in Australia. Don’t forget to look for the Kookaburra in every mural – some are quite hard to find. To book a tour contact the VIC on 4936 1909. ■ Richmond Vale Railway Museum runs trains on the first three Sundays of each month from 10am. ■ Kurri Kurri farmer’s market is held the second Saturday of each month.

MAITLAND REGIONAL ART GALLERY THE LONG PADDOCK, A 30 YEAR SURVEY A Goulburn Regional Art Gallery Touring Exhibition

GW Bot has a close connection with the Australian landscape and uses her own personal language as a means to depict it. The garden is an important aspect of her work “all of my work is intimately interrelated thematically and essentially deals with questions of environments - personal and public - and an individual›s path through these environments as an allegory for a person›s passage through life. Much of my work is involved in a conversation between private landscape cultivated, enclosed, full of possibilities and the wilderness - infinite, wild and unpredictable. The paddock forms a curious middle ground. I am particularly interested in ‹entrances› into the landscape as a passageway between worlds.” The exhibition GW Bot: the long paddock A 30 YEAR SURVEY is a touring exhibition developed by Goulburn Regional Art Gallery and curated by Peter Haynes. While her earlier works contained motifs and symbols, her recent work has evolved from the more literal figurative representations of the 80s to the almost pure ‘glyph-marking’ that we see now.

16 NOVEMBER 2012 - 17 FEBRUARY 2013 GW BOT, A Traveller’s tale, 2006, linocut on Magnani paper, 69 x 100cm, private collection

The exhibition showcases prints, paintings, artist’s books and sculpture and is a ‘must see’ exhibition for artists, students, printmakers and art collectors as well as the general public interested in art. Everyone is welcome at the art gallery and entry is free.

It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth. As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking. Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town. Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's most notorious criminals. Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look

Come along and enjoy our bush; stretch out under the cool night sky; listen to the rustle of the she oak trees; keep an eye out for tiny wrens, crimson parrots and

birds of prey. But please take care this summer – extreme caution with camp fires (Log on to the Rural Fire Service website www.rfs.nsw.gov.au). Love our National Parks and Bushland; keep it clean; if you pack it in, please take it home.
