Coffee Shops in the Hunter
Life is sweet in Raymond Terrace
It’s always good when a new chocolate and confectionery shop opens, but when it happens in your hometown it’s all the more sweet! King Street Confectionery opened in Raymond Terrace earlier this year and we finally got there last month (how remiss of us) and realised we should have tried it much, much sooner. A mistake we shall remedy repeatedly in the coming months and years. Stepping through the door is like stepping back to a time we all remember as kids – when sweetshops were mystical places of wonder and delicious delicacies beyond our imagination. The wide glass cabinets are filled with exquisite chocolates, fudges, and brightly coloured lollies. Real glass jars on the shelves behind the counters bursting with old time favourites that are full of the sweet promise of good times to come. Then, as your eyes are drinking in the view, the smell of freshly ground coffee hits you and you stand for a moment in complete chocolate/ coffee heaven. The most difficult thing is choosing what sweet delight to have with your coffee! We love it at King Street Confectionery – we have enjoyed trying it out on behalf of iMag readers. A definite thumbs up. Welcome to a taste of the good life by the river at Raymond Terrace. 15 King Street, Raymond Terrace Ph 02 4987 5113 Find them on Facebook!

Newcastle
Growing urban and rural culture, breathtaking scenery, endless opportunities of retail therapy and dining options, history and monuments that have stood the test of time and the home of some of the most influential acclaimed music artists. Where, you ask, could you find all this and more? The city of Newcastle. The city, with its delightful mix of today’s modern and vintage scene nestled into a backdrop of rich history and culture, invites you to step into a world of beautiful white sand beaches, emerging scenes of Café and cuisine atmosphere and an array of both modern and vintage retail and art prospects. One of the most visited and most-appraised examples of Newcastle’s tourism industry is the surfing, swimming, sun-lover’s haven known as the beach. Newcastle is home to five of the most popular and pristine beaches, favourites among both the locals and tourists: Dixon Park Beach, Newcastle Beach, Bar Beach, Nobby’s Beach and Merewether Beach. These beaches hold numerous propositions for enjoyment, including kite surfing, rock pools and baths or even just a

relaxing swim or surf. The areas and streets of Newcastle have a wide and colourful array of cuisine options. The four main and most known areas in the food culture are: The Harbour waterfronts including Honeysuckle, Darby Street in Cooks Hill, Beaumont Street in Hamilton and The Junction. These areas all have a wide variety of dining options culminating from various cultures to suit any group’s or individual’s taste palette. Newcastle plays host to an ever- expanding scene of art galleries and new and upcoming artists, whilst still keeping the grander and spectacle of previous and recent galleries. The Newcastle Region Art Gallery, one of Australia’s leading regional art galleries also finds its home in Newcastle. This lively and exciting city, with its daily hustle and bustle and continual growth into the expectations and needs of today’s society, holds ventures and scenery that appeal to tourists and locals alike, proving to be an essential place to experience. Newcastle Memorial Walk Newcastle Memorial Walk was constructed to commemorate the centenary of ANZAC and was completed in April 2015. With its striking 360 degree views of the city and coast, this walk provides a spectacular connection to Newcastle's Bathers Way. The original concept for the project was a one-way walk along the cliff top with visitors having to turn around at the viewing platform and return the way they came via Strzelecki lookout. However, the addition of the stairway to connect the walk to the Bathers Way is a fantastic addition with a 430m boardwalk. The Bathers Way, the six kilometre stretch of coast from Nobbys Beach in the north to Merewether Beach in the south, is being progressively
transformed as part of Newcastle City Council's coastal revitalisation program. We have also completely overhauled the shared pathways at Stockton, connecting the area to the 1400km NSW Coastline Cycleway. Less than five years ago the Merewether to Dixon Park stretch of the project was an unassuming area with a one metre wide foot path. Now the area is a bustling place for exercise, relaxation and everything in between. The Nobbys to Newcastle stretch is well progressed and visitors will be able to enjoy the new facilities in summer 2015/2016. More than two million people visit our beaches every year and with improvements all along our coast, we expect the city's newest experience, Newcastle Memorial Walk, will be a very popular drawcard for locals and visitors for years to come.

JULY/AUGUST PRODUCTIONS
Dancing at Lughnasa July 25 - August 8, 2015
by Brian Friel It is August 1936 and harvest time in Donegal on the North West coast of Ireland. This is a very rural and Catholic area and in a tiny cottage outside the fictional village of Ballybeg live the five unmarried Mundy sisters. For years the women have gone about their mundane, frugal existence living from one day to the next, sharing a sisterhood of life with mainly joy and laughter spiced with some unhappiness and disappointment. However with the return of their frail elder brother Jack from Africa and the subsequent visit of a handsome face from the past, their world changes forever. This autobiographical multi award winning play by Brian Friel is full of foot-tapping music and dance which forms a vital part of this glorious Irish comedy as it reminds us that the human spirit can endure even the toughest of times. JANET NELSON, a professional director from the UK, has directed a number of shows at NTC since moving to Australia 10 years ago. The cast features Tracy Ebbetts, as Kate, Tracey Gordon as Maggie, Tracey Owens as Agnes, Amy Wilde as Rosie, Pearl Nunn as Christina with Howard Rawlinson as Father Jack, Brian Randell as Michael and Luke Power as Gerry. Kurri Kurri and Cessnock to Wollombi "Cessnock" courtesy of Cessnock City Council and the Hunter Valley Visitor Centre
A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. OPERATION ART Until September 13 Operation Art is all about children helping to heal other children by brightening their stay in hospital through art. The project encourages school children of all ages to get involved, and use their art compassionately, to benefit young hospital patients, their families and carers. Maitland Regional Art Gallery is thrilled once again to be hosting the travelling exhibition which this year includes work by some local students and former patients. Operation Art is a joint initiative of the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and the NSW Department of Education and Communities, and proudly supported by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation. From the hundreds of works created across the state each year, a selection goes on tour before being gifted to the hospital to colour the walls of the wards. Operation Art connects communities, fosters young talent and nurtures creative minds in the artists and patients alike.

St James’ Church Morpeth celebrates 175 years of faithful worship and service This year is an exciting year for the Anglican community of Morpeth as they celebrate the 175th anniversary of the opening and consecration of St James Church. Taking nearly 4 years to build, and using local labour and materials, St James’ is the oldest consecrated church of the Diocese. The origins of the church are said to begin with a vow made to God by the church’s benefactor, Lt Edward Close, that if his life was spared in battle he would build a church as an act of thanksgiving. Accordingly, on the 31st of December 1840, the then Bishop of Australia travelled to Morpeth by steamship to open and consecrate the church, bearing the name of St James. The Parish has called 2015 a year of celebrations and is marking this significant anniversary with a number of events. They are also seeking to address the deterioration in the stonework, and plan to install a new stained glass window as a 175th gift. The main celebrations take place on the weekend of July 25-26. You are warmly invited to join the parish in any of the planned events, and especially at worship on Sunday 26th July, at 10am, which will be led by the Diocesan Bishop, Greg Thompson. Peek into the Past is when Tocal Homestead comes alive with the sights and sounds (and smells) of yesteryear. It is a wonderful old-fashioned day out for all the family. The sounds of working horses and heritage tractors and machinery mingle with the aromas of scones and apple pies baking in the old wood stove. Make sure you see the blacksmiths working at the forge and then enjoy a piece of damper from the camp fire, topped with 'cocky's joy'. Try your hand at the ancient art of water divining or a traditional bush game. Then watch the local straw broom maker at work - he'd be happy to sell you one. Keep an eye out for the 'redcoats' of the soldiers of the 73rd Regiment of Foot, they will fire their muskets and march through the site. Bring a scarecrow for the Scarecrow Competition and then vote for the best scarecrow (most votes wins!). This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of Tocal College, which was established as a result of the bequest of Charles Alexander the last owner of Tocal. Drop in to hear one of the history talks to learn how it all came about. There is a heritage clothing parade, machinery demonstrations, farm animals, cart rides with Harry the Clydesdale and tractors at work. On top of all that, there's lots of delicious homemade refreshments, or you can bring your own picnic to have on the lawn. Opening times: 10am to 3pm. Adults $10, Concession $8 and school children FREE
