Can it really be a year since we took over from Klara, who now runs the Central Coast iMag? Time flies when you’re having fun. July is a great month for music and theatre lovers in the Hunter - with a host of fabulous events throughout the area - in particular we are looking forward to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on the 11th (see page 31) and Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Civic Theatre Newcastle on the 17th and 18th. The Upper Hunter is alive this month with the sounds of Scotland as bands from all across Australia meet at the Aberdeen Highland Games on the 7th July. This annual event is going to be as spectacular as ever take a look at the information on page 45, head on up to Aberdeen to take part in the festivities - there is something for everyone. Chocolate Chip Cookies To make this recipe truly indulgent you can roughly chop some plain chocolate instead of using chocolate chips – either way this is a simple recipe for yummy cookies. Ingredients: 175g soft margarine 225g caster sugar 2 eggs 350g self-raising flour 100g chocolate chips Method: Pre-heat oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4 Lightly grease 3 baking trays Mix all ingredients in a large mixing bowl until a smooth biscuit dough is formed. Place large spoonfuls of mixture well apart on the baking trays and flatten slightly with the back of the spoon. Bake for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and just firm to the touch.

July is the month of Garden Design As the weather gets cooler it becomes the ideal time to get all the structural garden jobs done. Review the practicality of your garden. Making your garden functional will add value to your house by extending your living area. If you need some help with Landscape design, or what to plant where, then call in and speak to an expert. If your design involves paths, courtyards or retaining walls now is the time to do it before spring, when you will be ready to lay lawn or add plants. Check your spring annuals, replacing any lost ones with some advanced seedlings so as not to spoil your display. Plant your new roses putting some cow manure under the roses making sure there is some soil protecting the roots. When pruning your established roses make sure that you have sharp secateurs so the cut is smooth. Also check your secateurs are clean before starting, so as not to transfer any other diseases on to the raw stems. The easiest roses to prune are the old fashioned ones, as you only need to cut off the dead branches. Standard roses need to be pruned fairly hard this month. National Whale Day sees start to
Newcastle’s Whale Watching Season National Whale Day was launched in 2008 by IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) as a day for all Australians to celebrate their love of whales, as well as draw attention to some of the threats they face today. Coinciding with Australia’s Fifth National Whale Day NOVA Cruises will begin their 2012 whale watching cruise season from Lee Wharf Newcastle on Saturday 2nd June. NOVA Cruises pioneered whale watching cruises from Newcastle in 2007 and since then have treated thousands of guests to awe inspiring displays of Humpback and Southern Right whales frolicking off the Newcastle coastline. Although the whales are the stars of the show the cruise can also feature seals, penguins, dolphins, turtles, sea birds and other marine life. Peter Hanrahan General Manager for NOVA Cruises predicts “that this year over 15,000 Humpback whales will be making their annual migration from the freezing Antarctic waters passing Newcastle on their way to the warmer tropical waters
of Northern Queensland for breeding.” Over the past month the team at NOVA Cruises have experienced an increase in the number and volume of whales passing Newcastle which indicates the main population is on its way. For the greatest view and to get up close to the whales the best place to be is onboard NOVA Cruises vessel on a whale watching cruise. As the Humpback population has virtually doubled in the last six years and is increasing at a rate of 10-15% per annum NOVA Cruises are seeing consistent humpback whale sightings and last year averaged a 94% sighting rate. It is becoming common during the peak season of June/July to see up to twenty mammals off the coast of Newcastle in a single viewing. The Women Of Lockerbie A play by Deborah Brevoort and directed by Janet Nelson. December 21st 1988, shortly after taking off from Heathrow airport, Pan Am 103 exploded over the small town of Lockerbie, Scotland. The town was showered with thousands of litres of blazing aviation fuel and the wreckage of the plane. The death toll was 259 International passengers from 21 countries many of whom were young American students returning home for Christmas. The play, The Women of Lockerbie begins 7 years later, during a memorial service, when a mother of one of those American students, is found roaming the hills of Lockerbie, seeking some sort of closure. She meets some of the courageous women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the victim’s clothing found in the plane’s wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes and return them to the victim’s families but the U.S. government will not release them.

Running a family business Over 70 percent of all Australian businesses are family owned and run. To survive, strong business principles and practices must come first and family interests second. A family business has family members involved in the ownership, management and employment, often covering 2 or 3 generations. It is critical to have a strong structure and a solid agreement about the framework of the business and a clear understanding of where the responsibilities and authorities lie. A 'Family Council' involving all the family members can focus on the family's expectations of the business. Establishing a 'family charter' which outlines the code of conduct for family members can go a long way to clarifying how family members should behave whilst working for the business as well as specifying the practices which are expected. Setting clear roles, responsibilities and performance measures for each position will help avoid disputes about performance and remuneration. Some 81 percent of family business owners intend on retiring in the next ten years, while only 41 percent of those intend to pass on the business to the next generation. So having a succession plan is very important. Even if handing the business to the next generation isn’t on the cards, developing a plan and sharing it will help avoid disputes. Ensure whoever owns the business has a current estate plan (or will). Establish a proactive structure for resolving disputes. Don’t hesitate to establish a process or engage outside help should business and family relationships start to sour. If you wait too long relationships suffer. Avoid the legal path at all costs. Try to settle disputes before they reach the point of needing legal involvement. Disputes almost always damage the family relationship and has negative impacts on the business. Know when to walk away. As the old saying goes, blood is thicker than water. Don’t let the business come between family members. If you use the same principles and practices that non family businesses use, you will be on the mark for having a successful family business. A Run and a Red... a winning recipe With recreational running now back to the popularity levels of the 80’s, this year’s Coal and Allied Winery Running Festival – Hunter Valley, expects to attract more than 3000 participants. Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.
What to see and do in Kurri Kurri ■ Kurri Kurri is famous for its murals, which are a wonderful expression of the region’s history. Tours are available all year round. Kurri Kurri is the biggest mural town in Australia. Don’t forget to look for the Kookaburra in every mural – some are quite hard to find. ...will take you there! HYPERCLAY: Contemporary Ceramics explores the diversified field of contemporary ceramics, presenting work where the medium has been amplified, extended and intensified. This exhibition focuses on the new technologies, attitudes and techniques being embraced by artists in the 21st century, as the boundaries between art mediums blur. It features 26 works by eight artists – Addison Marshall, Andrea Hylands, Jacqueline Clayton, Paul Wood, Pip McManus, Roderick Bamford, Stephen Bird and Walter Auer.
Each of these artists has very different styles. Jacqueline Clayton, for example, hand moulds life size flower replicas from ceramic made from face powder; Paul Wood combines pre-made sculptures with ceramic and glass ware from op shops; and Walter Auer creates blackened ceramic toys from discarded teddy bears. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe Hunter Regional Drama School makes an ambitious and challenging leap as they present a modern adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ timeless and beloved adventure. An old house in rural England becomes the home for four children who discover an entryway into a wintry mystical world through an old wardrobe. In a first for Maitland, the blockbuster exhibition “PaperWorks” presents to the City of Maitland, art from across the globe. Maitland Regional Art Gallery along with Maitland City Council is excited to present in a series of 10 separate concurrent exhibitions, new artwork from Italy, America, Australia and South Africa each showcasing artwork from leading international artists each working with art on paper including two local young emerging artists. St James’ Anglican Church, Morpeth
The historic St James’ Church in Morpeth has been hosting music concerts for ten years. Their purpose has been to raise funds for the restoration and maintenance of the equally historic pipe organ, built in 1877 by William Davidson. The concerts have featured many distinguished artists both instrumental and vocal. The Organ Concert Series for July will be presented on Sunday 15th, in St James’ Church, at 2.30pm. The artists are the Newcastle Tudor Singers Directed by Dr Keith - Murree Allen performing an interesting and varied programme. The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the
greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. Martins Creek Memorial Hall The small village of Martins Creek in the Hunter Valley is holding its first Fireman’s Ball Sat 28th July at 6.30pm. Two years ago both the hall and fire brigade were on the brink of closure, with dedicated commitment from community members both were saved. It seems fitting now that a Ball will be held, in this quaint town with proceeds going to both the hall and the fire brigade. UPCOMING EVENTS The Singleton Art Prize Friday July 6th to Thursday July 12th The Singleton Art Prize is a major event on the cultural calendar of Singleton. It has been running for more than 30 years and is currently organised by a committee of the Singleton Hunter Rotary Club. The artwork is sourced from all over New South Wales and is very well supported with over 600 works of art on display in 2011. It is also the favoured Art Prize for many artists, as it sells more works of art than any other Art Prize/Exhibition. The works of art which win the major prizes are acquisitive and are donated to the Singleton Collection, with the collection holding more than 88 works and displayed through the council building and library. Aberdeen Highland Games The Aberdeen Highland Games takes place on the first weekend in July each year and it is the final event of Scottish Australia Heritage Councils Heritage Week. The Games are a gathering together from Sydney and regional NSW of bands, Clans, dancers, heavy events and State and interstate tug of war teams to celebrate the Celtic history of the Upper Hunter. Starting with the Grand Parade of massed bands and Clans at 9.30am, the Event usually hosts 12 pipe bands and up to 18 Clans. During the day visitors are able to listen to the pipe band competition, enjoy demonstrations of Scottish country dancing, marvel at the strong men of the Tartan Warriors caber tossing, tossing the wheat sheaf and lifting the stones. There is a tug o’ war competition with teams travelling from all over NSW and Queensland to take part. Fun events include a “knobbly knees competition”, best dressed laddie and lassie and numerous races are organised for the children. Around the ground fifty stalls offer a wide variety of wares. A wide variety of food, including haggis, is available at the Food Court. The day concludes with a ceilidh in the evening, this is a ticketed event and very popular with visitors. The Aberdeen Highland Games is a great day of entertainment and gives visitors the opportunity for one or two nights stay, (even more if so desired) in the Upper Hunter.
